I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Undercurrent by Kaylea Cross is the first book in her Kill Devil Hills series. The story introduces Bowie Davenport and Aspen Savich. Bowie is a retired Coast Guard turned mechanic. Bowie struggles with guilt stemming from an incident in his past and he has difficulty forgiving himself even though it was out of his control. He closed himself off from committed relationships out of fear of history repeating itself. However, he never expected to meet Aspen, who had him feeling things he never thought he would feel again.
Aspen came to Kill Devil Hills to start her life anew. A decision she made after inheriting a house and car from her great uncle, which placed her in the crosshairs of a disgruntled relative. On arriving in Kill Devil Hills she went looking for a mechanic to have the car tuned up and her search led her to Bowie. They had an immediate attraction to each other which led to a friendship and romance developing between them. However, demons and threats from their past would come knocking, threatening to destroy their newfound happiness.
I enjoyed this story from start to finish. It moved at a steady pace for most of the story, with the pacing picking up speed in the last twenty percent. Cross supplied sufficient information to whet one’s appetite and having one waiting anxiously for the other shoe to drop.
Despite the immediate attraction between the protagonists, the romance that developed was a slow burn one. It took awhile for Bowie to come to terms with his feelings for Aspen, because the guilt from his past held him back. In the end he relinquished the guilt, allowing his heart to be free to love again. Their honesty and openness with each other helped in the growth of their relationship. It took them awhile to open up about the tragedies from their past, but when they did, there was no holding back.
The secondary characters, some of whom were likeable, and some who were not, added depth to the story. Meeting Bowie’s sibling proved a treat, and I am eager for their stories. Aspen’s new neighbour, Jack, had me smiling each time he made an appearance. Beneath his grumpy exterior lay a heart of gold, and his dog Sinbad would melt your heart.
Undercurrent dealt with issues which many readers can relate to. Issues such as loss, grief, greed and jealousy. If you enjoy romantic suspense, Undercurrent would make a wonderful addition to your shelf.
Where are my romantic suspense fans? You’re going to want to pick up Kaylea Cross’s Undercurrent ASAP! It’s the first book in her new Kill Devil Hills series and it starts the series out with a bang!
Aspen and Bowie are both a bit bent and trying to find their way in the world. Both have past hurts to move forward from. Both have lingering survivors guilt. But both can’t deny the feelings they have for the other. And neither of them can stop the attraction and want no matter how much they deny it.
And it’s especially prevalent when Aspen’s life is in danger—Bowie will stop at nothing to make sure she’s safe.
I loved the romance between Aspen and Bowie. Their spark of connection was felt through the pages of my kindle. They were perfect for each other and just what they needed to make their way forward. Plus Bowie’s siblings are awesome too—and I can’t wait until their stories are told through the series. ~ Missy, 4.5 stars
Two people, both with tragedy in their past, feel they don't deserve a chance at happiness. The only thing good about this book is the trademark action scene.
UNDERCURRENT is the first instalment in Kaylea Cross’ contemporary, adult KILL DEVIL HILLS romantic, suspense series. This is thirty-five year old, Coast Guard vet turned mechanic Bowie Davenport, and thirty-one year old, Aspen Savich’s story line.
Told from several third person perspectives including Bowie and Aspen UNDERCURRENT follows the building romance and relationship between thirty-five year old, Coast Guard vet turned mechanic Bowie Davenport, and thirty-one year old, Aspen Savich. Aspen Savich’s move to Kill Devil Hills (KDH), North Carolina came in the wake of her beloved great uncle’s death, having inherited his home and so much more but Aspen’s arrival in KDH requires a mechanic when her uncle’s old ‘woody’ begins to break down. Enter mechanic and garage owner Bowie Davenport. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Bowie and Aspen, and the potential fall-out as demons from the past control Bowie Davenport, and Aspen’s move to Kill Devil Hills is followed by a series of accidents and break ins that may be related to her uncle’s will.
Bowie Davenport struggles to move on from the past having never forgiven himself for sins of the past. Meeting Aspen Savich stirred something deep within our story line hero something he hasn’t felt for a very long time but someone is targeting our story line heroine, and Bowie is desperate to protect the woman with whom he will fall in love. Aspen Savich knows loss but moving to Kill Devil Hills gives our heroine a new chance at life but the past refuses to let go, and with it, comes the guilt, and a grudge meant to destroy everything she loves. A spunky woman with a fancy for retro-chic, Aspen hopes to open a food truck in the small town of Kill Devil Hills.
The relationship between Aspen and Bowie is one of immediate attraction but Bowie battles between head and heart having loved and lost. Meeting Bowie gives Aspen thoughts about a future, and permanently settling down in North Carolina but neither one was prepared for the firestorm of palpable sexual attraction and chemistry. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are introduced to Bowie’s siblings: Harper and Chase, as well as Aspen’s next door neighbour Jack, and his dog Sinbad. The requisite evil has many faces.
UNDERCURRENT is a story of loss and grief; jealousy and desperation; love, relationships, and friendships. The premise is fast paced, intriguing and engaging; the romance is tender and seductive; the characters are flirty, broken and energetic.
Undercurrent is the newest book in Kaylea’s series of Kill Devil Hills and I can attest to it being simply spectacular. It’s full of nail-biting suspense, romance and steamy scenes but also redemption for the characters and overcoming their cumulative pasts😳
Aspen moves to KDH to escape her past and establish herself once again. She meets Bowie when she takes her car, Priscilla, to him for a service and as they say the rest is history❣️A slow build up but action-packed and a surprise cameo from some favourites....well some of mine anyway😜
A wonderful read and I’m looking forward to see what Bowie’s sister, Harper, and the predicament she has gotten herself into🤔 I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review❤️
What a great introduction to Ms Cross' new series Undercurrent is, with just the right amount of suspense and romance mixed into a story that had me engaged from the start. Thanks to really likable and interesting characters, and the gorgeous setting of the Outer Banks; and with lots of detail, including fun local dialect and some edge-of-your-seat moments I was thoroughly entertained throughout. And I can't wait to read more from the Kill Devil Hills series in the future.
This new series starts with a bang. It introduces us the Davenport siblings. Siblings that when their father died, the oldest, 17 year old Bowie, left his dreams behind to take care of his young brother, Chase and sister, Harper. Bowie lives a quiet life and spends his days working in his garage. Once a Coast Guard member, he left that life after a tragedy. A tragedy he still feels guilty about. The day Aspen Savich enters his garage, his dormant life is brought back to life . Aspen too is recovering from her own past . A life she left behind in California when she inherits a house in the Outer Banks. But the new life is threatened when people from her past become dangerous to her life. This engaging story, with complex characters, not only grabs your attention from the first page , but also is filled with suspense, romance and second chances in life and love. It also leaves you ready to read the next book in the series. Another wonderful story by this very talented author. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Undercurrent is the first book in an all-new series by Kaylea Cross. As a long-time fan of her writing, this book did not disappoint. Kaylea Cross is at the top of my 1-click author list and one of my top go-to romantic suspense authors for a reason: she writes such wonderful characters and does suspense so, so well, no matter what world she’s creating. I’ve read and re-read so many of her books since I found her and will continue to do so. You can’t go wrong with any of her books, in my humble opinion. Each series she’s written is more than worth your time and money invested into it. And I always look forward to the next new series she sends our way.
Undercurrent brings us to the small town of Kill Devil Hills on the outerbanks of North Carolina. Our hero, Bowie, is struggling to put the past behind him, but he lives with survivor’s guilt that weighs him down so much he’s given up on being happy. Especially with a woman. The heroine, Aspen, is also trying to put her past behind her and deal with survivor’s guilt, but she’s more than ready to put her foot on some solid ground and move forward. With the help of her uncle willing his beach house to Aspen after his death, it’s her shot to get it right this time despite her grief over his loss. But someone isn’t very happy that Aspen received all that she did from her uncle and is determined to make it their own.
As much as I love Kaylea Cross and her books, the suspense in this story didn’t seem to be quite as…suspenseful…as what we’ve seen from her in the past. For me, that was a bit of a let down as I dove into this new series. With that said, it was by no means a disappointing book altogether. I stand by the statement that you’d be hard pressed to find any book of hers disappointing. She did a great job building us this new world, though. I loved the glimpses into Bowie’s siblings lives and can’t wait to see where their stories take us. The plot’s pace is pretty steady for the most part until the climax. And there was plenty of emotion from all of our characters, which I also loved. Despite figuring out the mystery pretty early on as it wasn’t quite a hidden mystery, it was still a very intriguing and entertaining read for me. And I think romantic suspense fans, and fans of Kaylea Cross, will all enjoy this book immensely.
NICUnurse’s Rating: I give Undercurrent by Kaylea Cross 4 out of 5 stars!
Aspen Savich sure knows how to make an impression, dressed in the era of her vintage car she visits Bowie Davenport's garage. She'd been told he's the best mechanic to fix her car.
For Bowie it's just another day of running from his past and going to work, until his brother shows up. Chase has been working as a stuntman since he left the military and rarely finds his way home. This is a nice surprise for Bowie and he doesn't waste time putting Chase to work as they catch up. At least until they here an old motor and she walks in.
Now other than the beautiful woman that has Bowie feeling things he hasn't for years, neither he nor Chase have spoken to their sister Harper in over a week. This is unusual for her and they're both concerned.
Now Aspen has a project, a large home on the ocean side of the Outerbanks in the Kill Devil Hills. Part of the inheritance from her great uncle. She's in the process of repairing and renovating so she can live here. At least she hopes so. So many things were still up in the air. Including a possible appeal since her uncle's grandson seems to think it should all be his. I love the neighbor and the dog.
Bowie's sister Harper decides to come for a visit, she's got some things going on and really needs to be with her family for a bit.
There's plenty of suspense in this one as Aspen becomes friends with all of them. She's really afraid her past will destroy the budding friendships and the romantic and sizzling one forming with Bowie.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Aspen has moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC to escape from her past and to make a new start. She has vowed to live life as a better person than she was before and to make every action count. After a tragedy ended his last relationship, Bowie has been living with guilt and loneliness. But, from the first glimpse he knows Aspen is something more to him if only he can move on from his past.
This couple burns so very hot. Both have tragedy in their pasts they are trying to move on from creating an even greater bond between them. But while Bowie's past is truly in the past, Aspen’s has followed her across the country and has decided the future she is trying to make for herself belongs to him . . . and he'll do anything he needs to in order to claim it!
I Adored this couple! They felt so real and genuine and were both living with such guilt. It was nice to see them moving on and forgiving themselves. I loved Aspen's cranky neighbor Jack and his pup Sinbad. They added so much to the story! And I can't wait for more from Bowie's siblings . . . Harper’s story sounds like it is going to be a doozy!
The author also left readers a phenomenal Easter Egg giving readers a glimpse at a happy couple from a prior series. True Kaylea Cross fans will love it!
Undercurrent had fantastic suspense and action amidst a sweet romance that burned very hot. 5 stars!
What a great start to a brand new series by Kaylea Cross !
Undercurrent is book 1 of the Kill Devil Hills series, in this book we are introduced to the Davenport siblings, Bowie is the eldest and has stepped up since their parents passed away, he had my heart straightaway with how protective he is! 😍 both his siblings appear in this book, his sister Harper more so, and we won’t have to wait long for her book as she will be next in the series, the author teased us well with a slight build up to her story, can’t wait for that!
I found Aspen to be a wonderful quirky character, and how she builds her relationship with her neighbour is great (Loved Sinbad) She meets Bowie at his garage when her car needs tending to, Bowie’s reaction is priceless especially as his younger brother is there to witness it.
Both have painful pasts, Bowie’s heart is guarded shut after a heartbreaking tragedy, and Aspen is starting again in a new place, hoping to find a place to call home.
As with all Kaylea Cross books this isn’t an easy ride to HEA, someone wants what Aspen has and isn’t going to let anything or anyone stop them.
A romantic, funny, heartwarming, suspenseful read, loved the location too (and yes, I had to google Kill Devil Hills, NC, what a great name! Lol)
Excellent start to a new series....it’s just left me wanting more!
Undercurrent is the first novel in the new series by Kaylea Cross, Kill Devil Hills. It is set in a little town in the Outer Banks and tells the story of Bowie Davenport, a Coast Guard veteran and owner of a mechanic shop, and Aspen Savich, a thirty-one-year-old woman from California who has an amazing retro style including that of driving a vintage car called Priscilla. Both are recovering from loss and find solace in each other. The chemistry between them is on fire, but Bowie pulls away until he can't. There's a reason Aspen is in Kill Devil Hills and when it comes back to haunt her, Bowie steps in to take care of her, bringing them closer together than ever.
I fell in love with all the characters in Undercurrent, including Bowie's siblings, Chase and Harper. I'm looking forward to finding out the rest of their stories. Undercurrent had everything in it that I love in a Kaylea Cross book. She painted such a vivid picture, I felt like I was in the Outer Banks. There is suspense, passion, humor, gutwrenching emotion...everything I've come to expect in her books. Congratulations on a new series, Ms. Cross! I give Undercurrent 5+ stars and can't wait for the stories to follow.
The first book always sets the tone of what’s to come, wow is this going to be a great series! Set in a quaint little town with a huge personality. Bowie a former member of the Coast Guard and loves this town and his family. A proud owner of the local auto shop he is always looking forward to helping anyone out. When Aspen drives her vintage car into the shop looking for a tune up she finds herself locking eyes with its owner. To say that these two had instant chemistry would be a understatement. I loved They way these to really needed to find each other. Both had tremendous emotional baggage from tragic events that both experienced. I think they needed each other to heal. Add in Bowie’s amazing family, the grumpy handy neighbor and his spoiled dog. Throw in the dangerous people from Aspen’s past and you have a entertaining read. This was a fast paced quick read that definitely left you wanting more. I definitely want to see what Bowie’s sibling are up to next!
Bowie and Aspen. This was a delight key fully thrilling romantic suspense. I love the new town and the name is awesome oh and I adore Jack he is all kinds of grumpy old man wonderfullness. Chase and Harper are also amazing and I know their stories will be just as wonderful. Bowie is gruffly gorgeous, a mechanic to boot and has Tatts so I was drooling from the beginning, then he;s driving a Challenger which is my second favourites car to a Charger so he had that going for him to...lol then it was topped of with him loving a women with luscious curves!! Talk about swoon and the cherry on top was that he is a seriously nice guy, a true family guy and oh so protective of those he loves. Aspen is a sweetheart, who dresses however she wants to, she also owns her mistakes, we’ve all made them, she bakes like a goddess and she has such a tender heart I really loved her. The whole story was wonderful but the ending was the best.
Aspen is looking for a new beginning, Bowie doesn't realise a new beginning is even possible! Aspen is exhausted, she has run from the conflict, the threats and the shame...but the new beginning packed with yummy english treats doesn't go quite as planned and you can see her confidence shrivel as the threats increase. However, Bowie is perfect for her, he supports her, protects her when needed but otherwise stands beside her, loving her. There is no threat that will stop him protecting her and falling for her. Your heart breaks for these two broken souls, just surviving, not living, blaming themselves and suffocating under guilt. Until they meet, and those very broken souls recognise each other. Seeing them struggle as they help each other heal brings a smile to your face and hope to your heart. Can we possibly hope that Harper also finally finds peace and safety in book 2?
I'm a huge Kaylea Cross fan and so I bought this book the minute it was out, excited to start a new series. The writing style was the same that I've come to know and love with her books but I just didn't care for Aspen. I really wanted to like her, and at first I did. Then came her big secret. I saw it coming, or at least I assumed I did but hoped I was wrong, and so my affinity for her started to wane pretty quickly. Unfortunately, I was right and it was a deal breaker for me. Someone very dear to me was killed by a drunk driver, so I could barely finish this after the big reveal. I really liked Bowie, Jack, Sinbad and all the others and the setting was great too, as I grew up not that far from OBX. I just couldn't bring myself to like Aspen after I certain point. Someone else without my personal experience may not feel the same way about it, but for me it was a disappointing read.
This was an amazing start to this series with two people wanting to start over and finding love that they never expected to find. Bowie was still grieving the death of his girlfriend from years ago and blamed himself for her death. Aspen moved from California after her great Uncle Harry having left her his beach house in Kill Devil Hills so she could start her life over again and forget her painful mistakes of her past. He also left her his Woody and she took it to the town's mechanic, Bowie. It was an instant attraction for them which lead to an exciting story as Aspen had to fight for her life and Bowie ended up saving her which was something he could not do for his former dead girlfriend years ago. It was an amazing love story as they fell in love and forgive themselves from their past to the move on with their future together. It was a fantastic story and I cannot wait to read the next story in this series.
Undercurrent is the first book in the new Kill Devil Hills series by Kaylea Cross and it is fantastic! Aspen has come to Kill Devil Hills (KDH, and yes that is the city’s name), which is part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, to build a new life for herself. She plans to start by cleaning up and giving some TLC to a beach house and Woody left to her by her uncle. Bowie is a local mechanic who has a soli reputation for being able to fix any car, and he’s just the man Aspen is looking for to help with the Woody. Both Aspen and Bowie have pasts that are weighing them down, but they will find kindred spirits in each other. As they grow closer, someone from Aspen’s past brings trouble right back to her. Bowie vows to protect her at any cost. In each other, they find healing and a love they never thought they deserved.
After the passing of the person that she was closest to Aspen needs a new beginning, so she heads to North Carolina to the house that she recently inherited. Shortly after her arrival she heads to the auto repair shop, but she never expected Bowie to save more than her car.
Bowie has left his career as a member of the Coast Guard in his past, but the experiences still haunt him on a daily basis. His past has ensured that he doesn’t allow many people close but there is something about Aspen that breaks through the walls he has built around himself.
Meeting each other could have been chance or it may have been destiny as even though it is for very different reasons neither of them have been able to escape their pasts. Although they had some challenges along the way they prove that together they can overcome anything that life throws at them.
I love this author! Having been a military wife and been around the military most of my adult life, her understanding of how soldiers re-adjust to society and how you can take the man out of the military, but you'll never truly take the military out of the man.
I loved the main character. She reminds me of my daughter and her obsession with retro pin-up girl makeup, clothing and hair.
The main character, Aspen, is sassy, classy and sexy as hell and her very southern hunk from the Outer Banks, Bowie, heat up more than just the beach! Secrets and plot twists are good, but the characters are FANTASTIC. Aspen's crotchety neighbor could have been my favorite uncle!
Loved it! I have read many Kaylea Cross books and this is my favorite so far. I am so glad there are more books in the series because I would miss the characters.
After the death of her great uncle, Aspen moves to the little town in North Carolina where she was bequeathed a car and house on the beach. Her cousin has been making her life miserable because his grandfather left her everything. So she changes her last name and moves across the country. Bowie is a former Coast Guard and now owns a auto repair shop. He retreated from life after a personal tragedy rocked his world. But one look at Aspen and his life gets brighter. Someone is after Aspen and they will stop at nothing to get what they want. The secrets they are both keeping could tear them apart. Excellent story with lovable characters. Enough suspense to keep you hooked. Just enough steam to need a cold shower.
* Voluntarily read and reviewed this for the author *
The story of Aspen who had a rough time while growing up but finding the love she needed with her uncle who taught her to cook his favorite British deserts and took her under his wing. Aspen repaid it by being there for him through his cancer. After two years of struggles she is moving on to the Outer Banks with hopes of her life finally coming together. Bowie lost his first love and thinks he can’t or shouldn’t move past it, so he’s always struggling with family and work. When he meets Aspen, he thinks that he doesn’t deserve to have feelings for her but when her troubles come to find her, he realizes that he will do anything for Aspen.
It’s a great start to a new series. I recommend this book.
Undercurrent is the start of a new series by Kaylea Cross. I think it was awesome! The characters are wonderful ! The chemistry between Harper and Bowie is amazing and they are really made for each other. When danger follows Harper to Kill Devil Hills Bowie is there to help her. There is danger and suspense, a great small town atmosphere and hot romance! I liked Bowie’s family and can’t wait to read about them in the next books. Oh and I loved Priscilla 😀 Kaylea’s books are never a miss! The way she portrays the characters are awesome! This was another great read, very entertaining and fast paced. Definitely 5 stars I received this arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion.
If anyone reads my reviews they know I like to get to a series from the beginning. I did with this one and also from a author I do like to read. Aspen has moved and tries for a fresh beginning. If you are running though from trouble it always seems to follow with this not being any different. I would get the creeps if I felt someone was watching me as she does. She does get help from a mechanic that could go on a calendar but thank goodness he is willing to help. It could also help he is ex Coast Guard so he is not made nervous easy. Bowie back in hometown keeping to himself has his world turned upside down. The chemistry will help for them but then there is a crazy killer after her so we are pulled to the edge. One action hot page turner.
New series from Kaylea Cross, sign me up!!! Kaylea can write some serious romantic suspense books, and the new Kill Devil Hills series is going to be a perfect example.
Book one is the start of what promises to be romantic, let's fall in love and be all sexy and stuff, fun, the characters have chemistry and are funny, and suspenseful, who is out to kill who!! The first of three siblings to fall and find himself in the middle of trying to save her from someone that is out for revenge. Meanwhile, she bakes like no other, make sure you have snacks because you will need them with all the goodies in this book. The side characters are just as wonderful as the main in this book, can you say cranky older neighbor with an adorable dog!!
Undercurrents is a fantastic start to the newest series by this author. Aspen Savich has had a very painful and difficult couple of years so when she was finally able to leave, she moved across the states to North Carolina. Her beloved uncle left her a place where she can restart a new life. Unfortunately her problems did not resolve as she had thought. Danger is now following her.
Former Coast Guard Bowie Davenport is the local mechanic, he too has had tragedy in his life and has settled to be alone. But with the appearance of Aspen and her need of his assistance, his life and his acceptance of a solitary life changes dramatically. Bowie tried to keep things professional but with the help of his siblings and the pull of Aspen herself, he could not stay away. Then with too many close calls on Aspen’s life, Bowie was all in.
Overall, this was a wonderful read. The chemistry between Aspen and Bowie was strong and had me rooting for them from the very beginning. The drama and danger surrounding Aspen kept me turning the pages. And the awesome secondary characters have me looking forward to their stories.
With the start of the 'Kill Devil Hills' series, Kaylea Cross has given us a new location and fabulous characters to love.
Both Bowie and Aspen have struggled to move on following significant tradegies in their lives. Aspen's move to the Outer Banks changes that and a fortunate meeting sparks a mutual attraction.
Bowie is completely bowled over by the beautiful Aspen and an immediate need to protect her is fortuitous.
I love Bowie, his brother and sister and their unorthodox upbringing. I love 'grumpy' Jack and his beloved dog but most of all, I love the beauty that seems to catapult off the page when Aspen features.
Undercurrent is quite simply a great start to a new series. A series that has already gripped me and pulled me under!
Kaylea Cross is always a one-clicked pre-order book for me. I was a little disappointed in her last series, but have been looking forward to this new one. It was worth the wait. Cross gives us Bowie and Apsen both have been through events that systematically changed their lives, but they process them in completely different ways. Bowie is hiding and Aspen is challenging herself to do more. These two are electric together, and when trouble comes to town and threatens their newfound happiness Bowie brings out all the possessive alpha tendencies. There are snippets into the next book which I am anxiously awaiting.
Another exceptional read from this author. This was a fantastic way to start a new series. I instantly fell in love with the characters and the town's inhabitants. Whenever you pick up a book by this talented author, you can almost guarantee to be in for a gripping read, this book certainly was no different. The two main characters went through a lot both in the past and present, coming out stronger together no matter the dangerous obstacles to get them there. The secondary characters were just as amazing, so I'm really looking forward to the next book.
Is Bowie willing to give love a second chance? Still grieving over the lost of his girlfriend, the backlash of her family he finally finds a place he can live with. Catching up with his siblings he has his eyes open. When a new arrival Aspen comes looking for a car service and something clicks for Bowie. Aspen is here for a new start but her past comes back and threatens everything.. A great read, great story that has you turning the pages as a small town, history, families come alive and draws you into them.
