As The Stars Fall

A desperate dog. A scarred girl. A bond nothing can break.

An injured, young dog trudges the city streets, trembling from cold, from fear, from lack of food. Battered by the howling wind, he searches desperately for his lost family, yet day after day, week after week, all he ever finds is heartbreaking loneliness. But then, one magical spring morning…

Across town, a little girl sobs into her pillow in the dead of night. Her life devastated by a family tragedy, she can’t understand how the world can just carry on. Her days once overflowed with childhood joys, yet now, despair, darkness, and emptiness smother her like a shroud. But then, one magical spring morning…

… the dog and the girl meet.

In a tale as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, As The Stars Fall explores how compassion can make us whole again and friendship can heal even the most broken of hearts.

Steve has three passions: anti-heroes, animals, and travel. To date, he's visited 60 countries and has adopted five homeless cats, but he's yet to prowl the streets in the dead of night to beat up bad guys (though he still daydreams about doing so, but who doesn't?).

In pursuit of adventure, he's cage-dived with great white sharks, sparred with a monk at a Shaolin temple, and explored exotic locales such as Machu Picchu, Pompeii, and the Great Wall of China.

Fortunately, his passions fuel his fiction. He loves to pepper his action-packed thrillers with the exotic places he's explored and the unusual encounters he's experienced, while his dog stories glow with the love and companionship that will warm the heart of any animal lover.

More recently, while on his travels, Steve came across two true stories from the Holocaust which moved him so deeply, he has based two novels on them.

He lives in the North of England with his partner, Ania, the great-great-great niece of the 1924 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and two stray black cats who visited their garden one day and liked it so much, they moved into the house. Luckily, they graciously allowed Steve and Ania to carry on living there, even allowing Steve to continue paying the mortgage to give him a sense of purpose.

If you love stories of four-legged heroes, tales from histories darkest hour, or books with pulse-pounding action, you'll love Steve's three series. He wrote them for book lovers just like you!

I thought this was going to be a lighthearted book about a dog similar to Bruce Cameron’s books. I was wrong. This story was horribly sad. I think the author tried to make up for that with the final chapter, but it only slightly made up for it. Don’t read this unless you are in the mood for something to make you very sad.

Other things also bothered me about this book. I know with dog books we are already accepting that they aren’t going to be realistic, but several inaccurate things in this book bothered me. The fact that the dog didn’t pee for three days when he was waiting for Mia to come home. There was another moment it seemed to imply he didn’t pee for days either. I felt it irresponsible to write it that way, because no one should ever imply a dog can hold it’s pee for days. That actually bothered me. Also at the very beginning when the dog was describing all the colors it could see which is inaccurate. I am fine with the fantasy of dogs having human thoughts, but these things bothered me.

Overall, it wasn’t horrible and I still plan on trying the other dog books by this author, but it was just so sad.

The innocence of childhood shattered, one young girl will fill the hole in her heart with the undying love and loyalty of a puppy who has never known kindness at the hands of a human. Steve N. Lee’s AS THE STARS FALL is THAT book that should be read by all in need of the proof of the power of love and the magic in the hearts of an animal who has bonded with their “person.”

Grab the tissues, you’ll need them for both the tears and the laughter as we follow an abandoned and abused puppy as he tells his story of going from barely surviving on the streets to finally having a “pack” to call his own when he is rescued by a young girl and her father, who have known their own heartache. From fear and confusion to learning to adapt to the rules of the pack as he gives and receives love, loyalty and companionship, young Kai shares his story. He goes on to tell of loss, of pain and of longing and determination. Through it all, you will laugh, cry and feel enough rage to do bodily harm!

For both animal lovers and those who do not yet understand that unique and special bond between a human and a dog, this heartwarming tale will leave you emotionally invested in every page. You may even think of a dog you saw wandering the streets, what goes through their heads? How about that person you just passed? What has happened in their lives that has left its mark?

If you read nothing else the rest of the year, do pick up AS THE STARS FALL, it will do your heart good! You may even find yourself needing someone as special as Kai in your life! This hidden gem is blindingly brilliant! A MUST read, the perfect gift!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Steve N. Lee! This is my honest and voluntary review.

If you are looking for a light hearted book about dogs, this is not the one you want to read. But if you are looking for a book that has all of the emotions running through it, then this is the book you will want to read.

The is story is told from the dog's perspective and I found it interesting how the author interpreted what a dog might be thinking when faced with different situations. He also demonstrated the pack mentality and the bond that dogs form with humans. I've seen that bond with the dogs I have had in the past. It is amazing how these furry creatures capture our hearts.

The book starts out with Dog aka Kai as a stray on the streets trying to find food and his family. We find out later in the book what happened to his mother and littermates. My heart was just breaking reading the first few chapters and what he went through until Mia finds him and turns his world, and hers, upside down.

Kai loved a good mystery and solving things like - what is Kai (before he figures out it is his name), the scent of a dog but not a dog, learning about the four seasons, and so much more. It was like an adventure with him each day as he and Mia traversed the world around them. He even thought that humans were just waiting to ascend into becoming a dog and noted that body hair might be a sign of change into a dog. There are some cute scenarios regarding this but I won't spoil it for you.

The story then becomes sad again so I suggest having some tissues handy. Kai doesn't understand what is going on and takes it upon himself to solve the biggest mystery to him.  No spoilers, so pick up the book and read it!

Overall, this book is such a heart wrenching story that will take the reader through happy and sad times.  The ending almost broke my heart but it was the best ending possible for this story.

We give this book 5 paws up and highly recommend it especially if you like books like Marley and Me, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and similar stories.

OMG! What a fantastic love story. Just like the title, there aren't enough stars to rate this one. Great writing and absolutely loveable, loveable, loveable mcs. Seriously, I want Kai.

One of this books greatest plus points is its language. I've not read such a pure book in recent days.... not a single cuss word. Its so pleasant considering thats what most current authors believe in making their book more authentic and relatable to Gen Z. Well, this book is proof enough to the contrary. Great story, great writing and great characters...3 Gs thats whats a great book about!

I should have never read this book...and yet I can't bring myself to regret a moment.
It's a story that is equal parts intense beauty and heart wrenching agony, all tied up with an adorable fur baby to boot. It's a story that has all the feels, and I do mean ALL THE FEELS, big enough to drag you around by the nose, like so many scattered scents on the wind to our beloved canines, and toss you amid the stars to frolic, to play, yet to utterly fall under its spell.

In it's simplest form, it's a story of life, love, and growing up, told through the eyes of Dog...aka Kai. His voice leads us through his volatile beginning, passed the hard moments that won't let go and to new starts, only to have things turn on their heads again and again. I won't go into detail (though I so dearly want to) because it would spoil the experience, but I can tell you, it's not a book you can go into lightly. It's not a story that can soon be forgotten. Though the story may be Fiction, the heart hidden between the pages glows with such intensity, you can feel it from start to finish.

This is a heart warming story that will keep you turning the pages. I can't remember reading a book that touched me with a plethora of emotions like "As The Stars Fall".
I'm a pushover when it comes to a dog so when I saw the picture on the cover I knew I had to check it out. Well, the first chapter did not disappoint. I was captivated and could not put this book down except for the times I had to get a hanky.
The author Steve N Lee has not only written an outstanding book but, has succeeded in provoking the reader to think about how a dog processes our world. I keep looking at my dogs now and wonder about their actions and loyalties toward me.
I was completely captivated to the very end.
I highly recommend this book! I will be spreading the word about this book to all my friends and encouraging them to read it.
I hope you will write a review when you finish reading it so I can see how it affected you, what you think about the book and maybe start a conversation about it.
Excellent story, a must read in my opinion.

Several months ago the author reached out to me to see if I would be interested in reading an upcoming release he had planned. He had clearly visited my blog as he even mentioned some reviews of other dog-centric books I've loved. I said I'd be glad to and about two weeks ago, the digital copy arrived. I knew it was probably going to be a tad difficult to read because face it, if you do a dog book well, there's bound to be some sadness. However, knowing The Farm has totally embraced The Dog Days of Summer Reading Challenge, I dove right in.

I really don't want to talk a lot about the plot, because I feel that giving too much away would totally spoil the beauty of this book. But I will say that the book is told from the dog's point of view. The reader is taken on an adventure that spans Kai's puppyhood and on into adulthood. We get to see Kai's struggles, confusion and joy. And I say confusion because Kai spends quite a bit of time trying to figure human's out. Kai is a wonderful dog and I have to admit, the bond he forms with his girl Mia is very comparable to the one I feel with my Boxer, Cassius. As Kai moves on to learn about life, Mia is right by his side. Lee knows how to capture that special human-canine bond without specific words, relay it to his readers.

Lee has done a great job of being inside a dog's mind. I loved seeing Kai's perspective on things we humans see every day and take for granted. Also, because we are seeing everything from Kai's POV, there are some things the reader isn't told up front. Instead, Lee lets us figure out things much in the same way Kai has to. This allows the reader to completely be wrapped up in Kai's world and feelings.

So I guess you can tell I adored this book. It's truly one I will cherish forever. I rarely cry when reading but when I do, you know there is a dog involved. I definitely need to seek out a physical copy of this book so it can proudly be displayed among all of my other favorite dog books. If you love animals, this is definitely a book you want to add to your collection too!

Okay. I really liked this one. It's from a dog's (Kai's) point of view which makes it pretty funny. I don't know if I'll ever look at dogs the same way. :) this book kinda makes me love them more, but it was tough.
I'm going to give a lot more spoilers than i usually do in my review.
Mia, Kai's owner and favorite person, gets cancer. This part... it just literally crushed me. I was a crying wreck by the time I finished the book. Mia ends up dying and Kai is confused the whole time and keeps looking for her and wondering why she never comes home.
At the end of the book, Kai has learned to help his family without Mia, but he hasn't gotten over her. While visiting her gravesite he starts to feel really tired and lays down next to her grave and dies.
yeah.
I was confused about the last chapter, but I don't know if it was because I was too emotionally distraught to think clearly or because it was actually confusing.
Either way, as a dog lover, this book broke my heart. I don't think I'm ever gonna read it again, just because that would be too hard, but I don't regret reading it.
Some parts were a little weird or confusing through out, lol, but that might have something to do with it being from a dog's pov.
Thanks, Evelyn Boley, for lending this to me!

Spoiler alert. If you read books to feel good when you're through. Do NOT read this book. Its starts out with a lost abandoned young dog. A young girl and her widowed father find him. They take him home and give him love. So far 4 stars. Then while the story progresses, the author feels it necessary to describe the girl's growing body changes. Totally unnecessary. Drops to 2.3 to 3 stars. Now the girl gets sick and ultimately dies. Father has now lost his wife and daughter cancer.Dog is grieving and runs away. 2 stars. Lonely old widow finds dog and gives him care and a home. He starts to care for her even though he's still grieving. Back up to 3 stars. Lonely widow gets attacked by stray dog in cemetary and dog saves her life. Now he's fatally injured but manages to crawl to girl's grave before he dies. He meets up with her in the afterlife, but he's left behind a lonely old widow to grieve his death, as well as the father who has lost his wife and child.
All this, not to mention the author's weird obcession with dog pee
One star and i will never read anything by this author again.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It touched my heart so much. It will give you all emotions. The fact that this hurting little girl met this sad, abandoned little dog is enough to make anyone believe in miracles. This was a story that I was able to get lost in. I think that anyone who reads the story of unconditional love between Kia and Mia will be touched forever.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book. I have to say I loved this book! I've never read a book from this perspective although I have often thought about how it would be. I could feel everything as if I were experiencing it myself. I suggest having tissues handy! It also reminded me why I like animals better than people. I highly recommend this book!

WHATS AS THE STARS FALL ABOUT?
This is told from the perspective of a young homeless dog, struggling to survive on the streets of some town. He scavanges to get by and has learned that dogs who aren't his mother and siblings and people aren't to be trusted. He can't find his pack and isn't doing a great job of feeding himself when he's found by a young girl who convinces her Daddy to bring him home.

Slowly, he learns to trust Mia and her Daddy. Soon, Mia is everything to her dog, Kai, who learns that if he just waits long enough (and it's hard to do), she'll come home from school.

We spend a few quick years with the two, watching Mia grow up and some other things happen. But no matter what happens, Kai waits.

WHAT CAN YOU SAFELY SAY ABOUT THE ENDING?
This is a classic "Dog Book," in the vein of Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, Marley and Me, and so on. Which should tell you everything you need to know about what the ending of the book involves, so you go in fully warned.
That said, this is a different kind of read than those and will approach it in a different way.

WHAT'S THE INTENDED AUDIENCE?
I'm guessing this is aimed at kids—old enough to handle hard things (both those that happen to people and dogs), but it can be enjoyed by teens and adults, too (as long as they can handle the opening chapters coming from the point of view of a very juvenile narrator).

But all the promotional materials invoke A Dog's Purpose, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Marley and Me, and One Good Dog, none of which are fitting for a kid. So I don't know what to make of that. I guess I'd call this an All-Ages book (with the provisos I listed above).

SO, WHAT DID I THINK ABOUT AS THE STARS FALL?
It was a sweet little story about the love of a dog for his girl, and a girl for her dog. Yes, it gets hard to read because this sweet little story involves some loss, too. But that only makes the high points better.

Actually, I should add that the story about the love of a father and daughter for each other was just as sweet and just as heart-wrenching.

I chuckled frequently—not just at Kai's antics, but at the way he thinks about his people. I "awwwwed" more than once at Mia's treatment of her pup.

This is a very nice book (I'm wanting to overuse the word sweet and am having a hard time coming up with an adequate replacement) that I enjoyed, heartily recommend, and can see myself re-reading regularly.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion and this post. I thank him for it.

As the Stars Fall by Steve N Lee is a standalone novel centered around a dog. I did not know what to expect, but upon completion of the book, I thought Lee did a marvelous job writing this wonderful story. The entire book is in the POV of the dog, who is named Kai.

We meet Kai, who is a puppy, roaming the streets starving and afraid, with no one left of his family. Every where he goes, he is frightened by the nasty people, and dangerous animals. One such animal, a hound dog, injures Kai, and a sweet young girl walking with her Dad finds him laying there. She pleads with her Dad to take him for help, and after they take him to the vet, he allows her to bring the dog home. Kai is afraid early on, as people are usually bad, but in a short time he trusts the young girl and slowly begins to love Mia. Mia lost her mother, and Kai was the one who brought back her happiness.

This was a cute funny story, as we follow everything in Kai’s eyes; such as when Mia “hacks” a lot (he is hearing laughter); when he smells heaven (bacon); exhausted from long walks; when he is suddenly alone (she goes to school), etc. In a short time, Mia becomes Kai’s life and love, with him learning the mystery of people and allowing us to enjoy the ride.

The years will pass, as Kai and Mia get older, but the love and happiness get brighter. Kai turns into a big dog, always happily following Mia, and she loving him with all her heart. Then one day on one of their treks, something happens that will tragically change things.

I do not want to give spoilers, as saying too much more would ruin things for you. As the Stars Fall was a fun, heartwarming, engaging story line that did pull on our emotions, with laughter, love, tears and sadness. Very well done by Steve N Lee. If you enjoy books about dogs and family, you need to read As the Stars Fall.

I absolutely love dogs. I love reading about dogs, watching movies about dogs and spending time with dogs. When I was invited to read this book, I jumped at the chance, it sounded perfect for me. Who wouldn't fall in love with a story about a pup who has been living on the streets, being rescued by a young girl and her father. I don't want to give away the plot in this story, so will leave it there, but I want to share some of my thoughts as I was reading this book. At times, I felt like this book was written for older kids, possibly YA, then at others, there was a comment or joke that was definitely geared to adults. I loved that the story was told from the dog's (Kai's) perspective. That is not easy to do and Steve did a pretty good job with that. Some of the descriptions, such as "happy teeth" for smiling were perfect. This is a story that ran the gamut of emotions. There were times I was sad and angry, other times I was laughing, but also times that had me in tears. The story deals with grief and how a dog can help people deal with their emotions and heal. It also deals with the loyalty dogs feel for their owners or pack and what they are feeling as well. I really liked this one and am glad I read it, but be prepared for the tears. The author gifted me a copy of this book upon request. The ideas and opinions shared are my own.

So this book is on Wesley Banks website list for '100 Best dog books of all time.' So I was hoping for something great. Then when I read the first paragraph or two it was very well written, so my hope continue up. Unfortunately the book was only ok for me. Here is the first paragraph that I liked:

"Dog shivered on the edge of the curb, his brown coat sodden, raindrops drip-drip-dripping off his nose. The cruel cold gnawing on his bones, he stood transfixed, clinging to the splinter of hope like a hanged man clings to his final breath. He ached to escape this torment and continue his search, but instead, he waiting. Hoping."

The book is told from the dogs point of view. It is told not too much over the top so believable enough. The story proceeds from when the dog meetings the little girl and onward. All the things a dog would experience for the first time and have to learn are told from the dogs point of view. That was ok. Also told was the girl getting older, including a dogs view and opinion as she went into puberty, which I found awkward. Then sad things happen and I just didn't enjoy those parts of the book. People who like 'artsy' and 'poignant' books might like it more than me.

This is a absolutely beautiful story written from the dog’s perspective. Amazing look into how dogs see humans, Mia is the young lady who finds the injured puppy she names Kai. She is very depressed as her mother has died recently and it is just her and her dad. They have a great relationship and he lets her keep Kai. They are inseparable and this is their story. Make sure you have tissues as you will cry. The amazing bond between the two of them and the love they share is worth the red eyes and stuffy nose.A true love story between a dog and his “alpha”.
This review is totally my opinion.
Much thanks to Steve N. Lee for including me in the advance team for this beautiful book.

As The Stars Fall: A Book for Dog Lovers

I loved this book. The author did a fantastic job writing it. I’ve never thought of dogs having feelings as in this book. It put my son’s dog Gunner and his love for my son in a whole new perspective. A tear jerker but loved the ending. Will definitely read again and again...

Kai is a hungry, lonely, and scared dog. He is living on the streets with an injury. Humans haven’t treated him too kindly either … until he meets her.

Mia is a young girl who suffered an unspeakable tragedy. One day while out with her dad she stumbles upon Kai. As the stars fall is their story — a story of friendship, healing, and love; and one of heartache, sadness, and change.

This story is narrated by Kai and readers will be treated to an unforgettable tale as he learns to adapt to living in a house, with his own ‘pack’, and a soft, warm bed to call his own. He blossoms under Mia’s loving care. And, she, too, learns to smile and laugh again. Any one who has owned or loved a dog will understand how special these creatures really are so reading about the bond that develops between Kai and Mia is probably the best part of the story.

And while there are serious undertones throughout the book, Lee sprinkles in a lot of humour. I mean what dog doesn’t love ‘a piece of heaven’ (aka bacon) or exploring the great outdoors. Reading about Kai’s antics is exactly what is needed at times and Lee does a really great job maintaining the balance between humour and sadness and making the narration believable. This story has a fine supporting cast, but none of them compare to Kai and Mia. I was routing for their happily-ever-after the entire time.

This book had me experiencing all kinds of mixed emotions. I laughed, I cried, I felt angry, and I felt uplifted. I love stories that: (1) take me away; (2) make me feel like I am there too, within the pages; and (3) have happy endings. And the author has done just that, though not in the way I would have expected. With these two lost souls (Kai and Mia), Lee takes readers on a roller coaster ride through their story — proving that friendship and kindness are miracle workers in their own right and that sometimes a simple dog lick can make a big difference in the lives of those who are lucky enough to be chosen by one.

I’d recommend this book to all dog lovers, animal lovers, pet owners, or any book-loving readers who want to be swept away into a heartwarming and heartbreaking tale … but be sure to have a healthy dose of tissues on the side for good measure. AND be warned that after reading this story you may feel compelled to visit a pet shelter or rescue group in hopes of finding your very own sweet ‘Kai’.

I give this two BIG paws up.

Grab some tissues, your beverage of choice, and a quiet corner where you won't be disturbed, because, simply stated, once you start this book it is hard to find a good place to stop. I don't generally go for stories that aren't some kind of thriller or detective base, but I was asked by the author to read this and provide my thoughts. I loved it so much, I purchased it so I could have a completely edited, finished copy. I am so glad I did. This book is just great! Never a spoiler in my reviews here's what you need to know: If you ever loved a dog, this is a book that you can't pass by. This is a well-written story of a young girl and stray dog, how they find each other, and how powerfully they affect each other's lives. The story is told from the dog's point of view, has definite moments of humor, will push you to tears, and just plain grip you; it will elicit every possible emotion...there is just no other way to explain it. If you're on the fence about reading this book, jump off and get it now. You won't be sorry, and you'll definitely want to share with people you love.

This is a funny story where life is seen through the eyes of a dog. He compares different aspects and tries to understand those strange creatures called humans. There are a lot of mysteries he has to find an answer to.

The banter between Mia and Dad is also hilarious and it’s great to see them blossom again after the tragedy they were confronted with.

Once you connect with a dog, there is a bond that will never break. You stick together through thick and thin. No matter what happens, you are friends for life and love each other unconditionally. A man’s best friend? A dog, without a doubt!

This book should come with a warning. Make sure you are ready to get on this roller coaster of emotions and keep a few tissues handy. You will need them for sure.

A fluently written story that is a must read for every dog lover. 5 stars.

Thank you, Steve N. Lee

My full review available on Facing the Story
As the Stars Fall explores the myriad of emotions when dog and human meet and the special bond that is formed through the eyes of Kai, an injured homeless puppy rescued by a kind girl and her dad. Stories like this are always heartfelt and touching however what made this story truly special was witnessing the exciting and strange sounds, smells and feelings from a dog's perspective. Details such as the scents in Mia and Dad's house and finding happiness in the small things at home were original and entertaining. I especially enjoyed seeing Kai progressing from a scared and nervous young puppy to a confident and happy companion to Mia and the friendship that transpired was truly unique.

The characters in As the Stars Fall each have their quirks. I particularly adored the way Mia and Dad's relationship developed through the years and the special role that Kai played in transforming it. Naturally, Mia and Kai became close friends from the start but it was delightful to see how much joy Kai brought to Mia's life during the difficult period she was experiencing and likewise, Mia rescued Kai from a life threatening situation to only bring him up to be a cheerful and lively dog.

The story line traces many of the main milestones in a dog's life but also reveals other less significant moments such as times when he is left home alone which allowed the reader to form an even deeper connection. By the end I almost felt as if Kai was my dog and I was completely immersed in the story. This is largely due to the coherent and emphatic writing and natural flow between chapters. The style was fitting without being too formal or unnatural for a dog's voice.

I adored As the Stars Fall and was completely captivated by Kai and his adventures. I thank the author for providing this book at a very opportune time as I have always wanted a dog and have been considering making it a reality over the past few months and this book offered a different perspective. I highly recommend this book to any dog lovers or readers who love a brilliant story with realistic characters.

Many thanks to the author for providing an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The forever bond that can happen between a dog who has known no love or human contact and the person who needs them just as bad is unbreakable. Unbreakable.

The author either has experienced for themselves, or their research was spot on, as the book had very specific details of how I dog may behave after living in the world alone and hungry, traumatized by horrific events to them alone in the street. The story was written in third person but included what the dog was thinking during their time alone, and then also afterward after being united with someone who cared for them and needed them just as bad. 😭. Being able to know the dog’s thoughts through this and through changing that happens going through life was a great way to approach this storytelling.

Someone please pass me a tissue

This story is told through the eyes of a dog that was rescued by a little girl and her father off the streets. That dog is Kai. Kai's whole world changed the day Mia found him in his moldy box.

If you read this book, you'll most likely need some tissues. You'll find laughter and tears contained in these pages.

This book broke my heart and made me cry many times but would have to be my favourite book! I was so invested from the start and was captivated by Kai’s story. I highly recommend but keep tissues close by and don’t read in public. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’re a dog lover this is a very good story. A bit of a tear jerker towards the end but a happy ending. Told from the perspective of the central character.
