Fantastic collection of essays that gives a good degree of both breadth and depth to the highly complex area of Canadian Health Law. As our baby boomer population ages and puts an ever heavier demand on our health care system, health care law, and the policy surrounding it, will occupy an important place in our national thinking, making this book an indispensable resource for anyone interested in or practicing in this branch of law.
As would be expected, there are essays about medical negligence, regulation of health care professionals, privacy, and mental health law, but I was also really happy to see essays looking at pharmecudicals, human biomedical research and emergent technologies. The essay on emergent technologies is of particular interest owing to the impact that AI and the internet will have, and in some cases already has had, on privacy and delivery of health care service.
I read the third edition of this book, which was released in 2007, which leads me to the only complaint I would have about a book like this, which looks at a field that is as rapidly changing as health law and medical technology. Both medical technology and the law are moving so quickly, that I could see that some of the information here was outdated. However, the same would be true if it was released last year, since the health care field is changing so fast. Owing to the nature of the health care field, it might be better to have an online version of Canadian Health Law and Policy so that the authors could update periodically to keep it current with the ever changing dynamic of Canadian Health care.
Overall, however, this was a great book and I highly recommend it!
