Isn’t it strange how some people can be so good with animals, but not with people? That is what Riley is like with horses. She acts all standoffish with people and tries to keep a distance. But maybe she has a good reason. When I found out about her family and then what happened to her in the military I had a much better understanding. When she meets Garrett, she gives off her don’t mess with me vibes. Then she is left with a dog that was found on the side of the road to take care of. As good as she is with horses, it was hard to believe she didn’t want anything to do with the dog. Unfortunately when she goes after the dog that ran into an abandoned mine she gets antsy. I was glad Garrett found her and the dog because the front of the mine caved in trapping the three. I so loved seeing the three of them, especially Riley and Garrett, have to learn to work together. I couldn’t imagine being trapped in a mine and no one around to miss me. This is where other secrets come out that helped me understand both of them better. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
What a great story this was, I enjoyed every minute. They both have baggage. She's too scared to get attached to anyone because they all die! He's been burned and feels ugly and unworthy. Circumstances have them trapped with no way out, talk or go insane. Including the little stray dog what a permanent bond that trauma had created. I enjoyed the snippets of her past history, as the story progressed, so did our knowledge of what made her tick. A very entertaining read, I highly recommend it.
"Riley's Rescue" (Last Chance Book 6) by Lexi Post is a wonderful read. I enjoyed Riley and Garrett's story. This is a great addition to this series, packed with romance, hot cowboys, firefighters, military, animal rescue, entertaining characters, and more. I loved catching up with everyone from Last Chance again. I'm sad this is the last book in this series. I hope we'll see these characters again soon. Highly recommend to all fans of romance, cowboys, rescue, and series.
This was an awesome read! When Riley was introduced in Dillon’s Dare, I was instantly curious about her. She gave me the impression of a by-the-book, no nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is kind of woman and that impression was definitely spot on. I enjoyed getting to know her and Garret.
Riley O’Hare is an Army veteran who drifted from place to place not wanting to put down roots or get involved on a personal level with anyone; she enjoys being alone and is passionate about horses. She also suffers from PTSD and has some pretty vivid nightmares. After turning in her boss for animal cruelty she found herself on the doorsteps of the Last Chance Ranch with her duffle bag and horse accepting a ranch hand position.
The more time she spends at the ranch, the more comfortable she becomes with her employer and all his family and it was starting to make her feel uneasy because she did not settle or get comfortable anywhere. It also did not help that her boss had too much on his plate and things, as well as communication, were failing. These kinds of things just upped Riley’s irritation even more. Then expecting the usual rescue horse hauler, her world is tilted again when the confident, overpowering presence of Garrett Walker steps out of the cab of the truck with his devilish good looks and piercing eyes and hauls her to safety then looks at her like she’s daft from her interactions with Cyclone (Dr. Jenna’s horse) with a bristly retort on his tongue...things were about to get interesting.
Garret Walker also has a tortured past and he is definitely familiar with pain and self-recrimination. As a former Hot Shot firefighter he is trying to start over after a wildfire injury left him physically scarred and mentally and emotionally damaged. When his old buddy Cole offers him a job as a rescue horse hauler for Last Chance he takes it with the hope it will help him move forward. After an interesting encounter from picking up his first horse and arriving at the ranch to find an annoyed, fiery red-head wrestling a horse and ATV his curiosity was definitely piqued. She definitely throws off the independent, stay away vibes and though he cannot quite figure her out he knows there is a deep sorrow and pain that keeps her apart from others. Either way, he is determined to learn more.
When a freak accident throws them together and closes them off from the world, they both have to come to terms with themselves and each other. Can their shared past of pain and self-torment be the catalyst that bonds them and ultimately helps them heal? Or do the wounds run too deep for repair?
There was plenty of family, light-hearted banter, laughs, emotional struggles, an adorable little dog (and cute interaction between him and Riley), pasts histories revealed, grief shared, romance, and a great HEA.
Under your scars I pray You're like a shooting star in the rain You're everything that feels like home to me Under your scars, I could live inside you time after time If you'd only let me live inside of mine -Under Your Scars, Godsmack
Army vet Riley O’Hare has made a pact with herself to not make any long-lasting connections…if you don’t stay any place too long, people can’t hurt you and you can’t hurt them. This has worked well for her up until her stint at Last Chance Ranch. Riley has stayed way beyond usual and has concluded that this ranch is not only a haven for rescue animals, but perhaps for broken humans too…
Garrett Walker, former wildfire fighting Hot Shot, is working towards beginning a new life, and when his fellow firefighting friend offers him employment at Last Chance Ranch, he decides to give it a go. But he never planned on running into a beautiful feisty redhead nor dream of bearing his heart to another…
Riley and Garrett find themselves in a situation most would never overcome…but together, they make each other stronger…now if only Riley can look beyond what broke her and see that “she’d been so caught up in trying to keep her inner scars from showing, she hadn’t recognized he might have his own…”
Dear Reader, I am 100% in love with this story! Not going to spoil the adventure that brings Riley and Garrett together, so you will just have to snag your own copy! But let me say that these two broken souls discover so much about each other in a short time, and even when we are blinded by what is in front of us, our soul can still feel it’s mate. Loved and highly recommend!

Riley O'Hare is the only full time hand at the Last Chance Ranch. She really likes working alone, prefers it actually. Now while she likes working for Cole he's been so busy as Chief of the fire department that he's been forgetting to pass on messages regarding the ranch. One of the things he didn't pass on to Riley was the arrival of a rescue, another that it would be a new driver.
Garrett is a former firefighter, and needing something to do, accepted Cole's offer to transport rescues to the Ranch. When he pulls up with the horse trailer, Riley is trying to get Cyclone to calm down. The Clydesdale is hyperactive if he doesn't get work to do every couple of days. Of course seeing Riley in a position that with any other horse would be a major problem, he jumped in to save her. That was his first mistake and had me giggling.
Now along with a horse, a new driver and the trip to the mine with Cyclone, there are other things Cole is forgetting to do. His responsibilities as Fire Chief takes priority and so much time.
As is it turns out everyone is leaving the area for the weekend leaving Riley alone to run everything. The last thing she expects is for Whisper to drop off a dog. She and Trent are heading for Las Vegas and found him abandoned on the side of the road. Dr. Jenna is also away for the weekend and she didn't want the dog caged after being left like that.
It's this dog that starts a series of events that will not only trigger memories for her but also bring her and Garrett closer than she ever thought possible.
Plenty of hold your breath moments along with tears, laughter and sizzle.
Last Chance Ranch is a horse rescue ranch that also seems to rescue people as well. In this story the main ranch hand is Riley O'Hare, an Army Vet who has sealed herself off from people and pretty much has the personality of a prickly pear cactus - keep your distance. In the story we come to find she was pretty emotionally damaged in Afghanistan when she was the sole survivor of her team and buried in a tunnel for 11 days to escape by herself.
Garrett Walker is the ranch's new horse transporter. He's an old friend of Cole's who owns the ranch and also is the Fire Chief for Canterbury. Cole's got too many responsibilities and is short of help at the ranch so he reaches out to Garrett with a job to consider. Garrett is himself a wounded warrior after being badly burned in a wildfire he was fighting as a Hot Shot. When Riley goes missing when he's delivering expected horses to the ranch he goes looking for her. They end up getting trapped in the old mine on the property when it collapses after going in to rescue a dog that's new to the ranch.
I found this story interesting watching each person's give and take on how to get out of the mine. It's complicated by their emotional scars, Riley's flashbacks and Garrett's expectation to being rejected when a woman sees his scarred body. Garrett is so patient with Riley and Riley is so fierce in her support of Garrett. I really enjoyed this journey to healing and love.

First off, I loved it! I felt sorry for these two heros, both with scars from very different battles and service, and neither is looking to expand their own current status of one. When a fur baby, she finally named Copper, goes running after a rabbit, no one dreamed the consequences of that rescue going wonky for both her, and Garrett when he sees she's in trouble and follows. There's so much comes out between these two when they don't know if they'll get their tomorrow, but they are both fighters! And Riley can't let Copper down, or Domino, her own devoted and brilliant rescue horse. I read a quote in here so very true, especially for 2020, I think. "Human connection is the reason for living, and loving others is being alive.” The journey was a lot emotions, bits of snark and laughter, one emotionally hot night assuming it was night, and my happy sigh HEA. I was all in with this journey in the Last Chance series. Did not want to put it down, until the last page, then I wanted more.
The ingredients are exceptional, the delivery is divine and the characters will melt your heart.
She is a veteran and works at a horse rescue. He is a cowboy / firefighter – even better a Hot Shot. Both have trauma in their past. Both are not looking for entanglements.
Riley still has nightmares from her time in the military when she escapes the “bad guys” by hiding in a cave, and rather than continue to search for her they blow the opening. When she and Garrett are trapped in a nearby copper mine, she has flashback to that harrowing event. The difference is, she has company and knows within a few days someone should miss them and come looking.
A simply fabulous story – touching, emotional, and entertaining. Having worked at a horse rescue myself I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the horses and their personalities.
**I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book**
When I started this book, I really didn't know what to expect. I knew Riley wasn't my favorite person because seemed to blow lukewarm and cold. I could not see how Riley and Garrett were ever going to connect.
That all changed when Riley went missing. Garrett and Riley's secrets started to slowly unfold. I got a chance to see how damaged they both were, Riley even more so than Garrett.
I could imagine being in that position. I found the whole sit to be riveting. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down until I was done. There was some romance, a bit of steaminess, and a ton of emotion. A definite 4.5 star read for me.
I voluntarily and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
What a wonderful story of two people who show courage and resilience in their need of each other to overcoming their fears. And, it takes place in the perfect location, the Last Chance Ranch where horses with difficult pasts come to triumph over difficult them! Riley is an Army veteran with an awful experience during her time overseas. Garrett was a Hot Shot with his own bad experience. Together with a little dog in Riley’s care, they get stuck in an old copper mine after a cave in. They find that they have to work together and in doing so ‘rescue’ each other. Great characters, interesting back stories, a totally enjoyable read!
I loved Riley, her love for animals and her ability to "read" them. Garrett was a grounding force for Riley, and she was for him. When danger struck, the attraction between them helped get through the situation, but at the same time terrified Riley. I enjoyed their getting to know each other. I loved how Riley found the strength to admit what was really important to her. I recommend this story, and now I have to catch up on the series.
I received an ARC for this story and I purchased this book. This is my unsolicited review.
Riley's Rescue: WOW! Fantastic story! It was a wonderful addition to the series. I really enjoyed Riley and Garrett, they were the match for each other. They made each other realize that they can st people in their lives. Riley was different to the other women at Last Chance and that's what made her special and what she had been through in life. Garrett had been reject by women because of how he looked and that's a shame and Riley saw as someone that respect women as people. Great story!
OH WOW..... Riley this women warm my heart from the first time I meet here. She was so sad so much hurt. Garrett Oh my you sneaky Lexi Post bring in a character with his scars and hus pain....... THEN... yelp cant believe you done it Cause Riley that pain twice but you pulled it off by writting a amazing journey for them both. Wow what a healing emotional wonderful story you have written. You always pulls us into each page giving us such a spectacular read.
I thought this story was so lifelike and about the struggles two different people have to face Riley being in the service and Garrett being a firefighter called a hot shot. They both have issues to deal with in there life. Riley was always afraid to get close to anyone because they have died. Garrett had his own scars to deal with and they made him feel no one would want him. Read to find out what two people plus a stray doggie have in common.
Loved the story. A little unexpected that most of it happens in a cave where the two are trapped. Both dealing with personal demons, Riley and Garret feel they each are alone in the world and vow to stay solitary. But an unexpected situation, forces them to depend on and trust each other in spite of their misgivings. Learning to trust and open up to each other is harder than anything else they have done. Great story and great story line.
When you are damaged, alone, scarred and running is there a way to be able to stop? Can you continue running forever? Are you trapped with now way out? Can you dig yourself out or will Garrett be able to help you find the way out? What if they can't find a way in? I would recommend this book.
Scars inside and out are hard to overcome. Riley and Garret have their share between them will they get past them to give their unit a chance? In this last book of the Last Chance series I had a hard time connecting with the characters, I found the tension to be flat and the attraction lackluster. A bit of let down for an otherwise enjoyable series.
