A May Code for Love by Jacki Delecki was another short adventure in her Code Breakers historical series.

Ella and Sebastian are perfect to represent the "opposites attract" couple as society views Ella as a bluestocking spinster and Sebastian as a rake. However, looks can be deceiving as both Emma and Sebastian are more than up for the challenge. The plot moves swiftly in this novella with several suspects who may be the traitorous spy and romantic sparks that fly from the first meeting. My only complaint regarding the book is that it was too short because I wanted to spend more time with Ella and Sebastian.

The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is book 9 in the Code Breakers Series. They are all about spies in regency England. They are all a great change from the usual Ton Society balls etc and this one is no different. Although they are all related, they can all be read as a stand-alone. This was a very quick, romantic read with a little adventure thrown in. I have always enjoyed this series but felt that this one was a little too rushed. It was still well written with very likable characters but I would have liked to see a little more espionage and suspense. I would have happily spent more time with this story. I am still glad to have read it and will be looking forward to any future books. There was no sex in this book. I received this as free from the author and freely give my review.

A May Day Code for Love is the ninth novella in the Code Breakers series. It was a short story so was a fast read with charming characters. Just like all the books in this series, there was some intrigue, suspense, and romance in the story.
Miss Ella Evans was known as a bluestocking so when she was asked to allow the rakish Lord Sebastian Grosvenor to accompany her home and to the local May Day celebrations, she didn’t think anyone would believe he was interested in her. Sebastian needed a cover while he was investigating the area for a French spy. He had used his rakish reputation to hide behind while working on missions for the Crown. He never expected to have feelings for Ella. Can he find the traitor and keep Ella safe?
This was a great addition to the series, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was longer. I loved the characters and would love to have seen more of their courtship.
I received an ARC and am willingly leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An instant attraction

Sebastian has a reputation as a seasoned rake! Ella is a dedicated spinster who is intelligent and resourceful and determined to confront the rascal who stole her innocence! I love the interaction and instant attraction! Ella has been overlooked by her father and most of the men in her life! She has little or no idea of her own worth! Sebastian secretly longs for his own wife and family I think he has become tired of his life before meeting Ella! When Ella puts herself in danger to confront a traitor Sebastian will risk everything to rescue this woman he has come to love!!!

My favorite type of story is one where the heroine can save herself in a tight squeeze, and this is one of those heroines! Loved the fact that she was capable of handling herself, and still used common sense! Ella was a great cover for Sebastian. She never saw herself except as a plain spinster. Sebastian saw her as perfect. I really enjoyed reading their story of falling in love!

A novella taking place over the mayday celebrations.
Ella is asked to help find a French spy by allowing a gentleman to accompany her as her fiance. To Ella's dismay the gentleman in question is a known rake, however she agrees to the plan in the hope that they find the Traitor.
The two are immediately attracted to each other and the story flows along quickly.
I feel this could easily have been a full length novel, but it is still an enjoyable read.

Excerpt from A May Day Code for Love

Lord Rathbourne, seated across from Ella, crossed his leg and leaned forward. His piercing gaze was unsettling, and Ella had to suppress the urge to squirm or fidget with the ribbon on her gown. Trained as a lady to control herself, she stiffened her spine and met Lord Rathbourne’s eyes.

“I’d like Lord Grosvenor to accompany you to the Earl of Essex’s May Day celebrations. My Aunt Euphemia will act as your chaperone.”

Ella was transfixed by Lord Rathbourne’s announcement. She heard the words, but she couldn’t comprehend their meaning. Was Lord Rathbourne going batty from the pressures of his work? Why in heaven’s name would Lord Rathbourne make such a request?

Lord Grosvenor would never accompany her anywhere. He was the most eligible bachelor and the biggest rake throughout the kingdom. She did not conform to his taste in women at all. He wasn’t interested in country women on the shelf but rather dashing and daring widows.

“Lord Grosvenor? The man with the worst reputation in all society?” Ella squeaked out, her eyes trapped in Lord Rathbourne’s stare.

“Such high recommendations from the lady.” A deep bass voice jolted Ella out of her shock. Unbeknownst to her, Lord Grosvenor had entered the library and now leaned against the doorjamb. The gigantic man with his loose cravat, tousled hair, and insouciant posture appeared as if he had just emerged from someone’s bed. Most likely he had. The arrogant man had the nerve to grin at her, dimples and all. His green eyes sparkled in amusement. No man should have such beautiful eyes, long thick eyelashes, and dimples. “I think Vane might have a worse reputation. But I’m happy to share the honors.“It seems you’ve started without me?” Sebastian

*****

Grosvenor crossed the room in the awkward silence, very aware of the delicate flush spreading across Miss Evans’s slender pale neck to her high cheekbones.

“Lady Gwyneth.” He bowed to the vivacious woman who was grinning at him. “Ashworth.” And nodded to her husband.

“Your timing is impeccable, Grosvenor. Cord was about to explain how having my dear friend under your care isn’t a dim-witted, half-brained idea.”

“Gwyneth, if you’d allow me to explain before jumping to conclusions.” Rathbourne raked his hand through his hair, a habit he probably repeated often in dealing with his younger sister.

Sebastian took the chair next to Rathbourne, forcing Miss Evans to face him. Her pert chin was thrust forward and her forehead was wrinkled in displeasure as she stared at him. Her embarrassed blush had faded.

“As I was explaining to Miss Evans”—Rathbourne shot a piercing gaze toward his sister–“I need Grosvenor to attend the May Day celebration. And, until Ash told me of your attendance, Miss Evans, I wasn’t sure how I could accomplish the objective without raising suspicions. Since you’re a close friend of Malden and your father’s estate borders close to the earl’s estate, it is the perfect opportunity.”

Miss Evans’s top teeth worried her lower lip as she listened. Her complete attention focused on Rathbourne.

“Since my Aunt Euphemia chaperoned you during your seasons, her acting as your chaperone in Southend-on-Sea wouldn’t raise any questions, especially since Gwyneth can’t travel.”

“Why must Grosvenor attend a country affair? You can’t expect Ella to agree without knowing the full rationale for this charade,” Gwyneth protested.

Ella nodded in agreement. “Lord Rathbourne, it is a country celebration of the old traditions—maypole dancing, flower baskets, revelry around the maypole, and this year there is to be a ball on the last night. I can’t imagine that this is the sort of entertainment Lord Grosvenor would ever seek. And there is nothing at this weekend’s events of importance to England’s war with France except its physical proximity to the coast.”

Sebastian leaned back in his chair to enjoy watching Rathbourne, England’s head of intelligence, handle the two spirited, clever women. During their debuts, neither woman had pursued marriage. Both embraced friendships with the other ladies and gentlemen. Neither flaunted her incredible beauty and wit but were friendly to all. After his morning talk with Ashworth, Sebastian now knew why—both had been in love with their childhood neighbors. This wouldn’t be an easy visit for Miss Evans if the rumors of Malden’s forthcoming engagement were true.

Ashworth had married Lady Gwyneth, but Malden had never come up to scratch. Instead, like many of his peers, Malden had spent his time waiting to ascend to his title pursuing women, wine, and gambling. Did Miss Evans still yearn for Malden? And would her heart be crushed if her beau was found guilty of treason? And why should he be considering her feelings? His assignment didn’t include taking care of Miss Evans’s romantic life.

This is a novella and a fast read. I don't usually like short books but this one was great.
Miss Ella Evans is a young lady who was taken advantage by the man who was supposed to marry her
then dumped by him three years ago. She has decided she does not need a man in her life. She writes Gothic novels under a pen name. When she is summoned by her best friend, Lady Gwyneth brother
the powerful Lord Cordell Rathbourne. He wants her to accompany one of the Crown's best undercover agent to a May Day Celebration. Lord Sebastian Grosvenor is a rake with the worst reputation in society. Her ex-fiancé is Malden is hosting the event with his father and new fiancé.
Poor Ella doesn't want to meet any of them every again. But to help the Crown catch a French smuggling ring. He will act as her escort with Aunt Euphemia as chaperone. In no time both Gwyneth and Sebastian learn there is much about the other they did not know. The attraction is fast and deeply
moving. With suspense, intrigue and lots of twist and turns this is a great read.
Other wonderful addiction to the series. All the books are great and can be read in any order, but I think more enjoyable if read in order.
I received and ARC from the author and want to thank her, and am giving my honest opinion voluntarily. Hope you get a copy and enjoy it too.

Ella is recruited by her best friend's bother and husband to provide cover for one of the King's undercover agents at the upcoming May Day event at the home of her former childhood friend and first love. Ella is to provide cover for Lord Grosvenor while he searches for evidence of who all is involved in a French spy ring. Sebastian vows to not do anything to ruin Ella's reputation especially the way that her first love did. He soon learns that Ella is not some simpering wallflower, but is in fact a very capable young lady. She intrigues him in many ways and he just may not be able to resist her charms. Ella soon learns that Sebastian is not at like she thought he was and that perhaps he might be the man for her. The May Day celebration includes a spirited chaperone, a French spy, a spiteful fiancee and an abduction. I love Ms. Delecki's Code books and I think that you will too.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A May Day Code for Love (Code Breakers #9), my sixteenth read from author Jacki Delecki. Another outstanding read. No matter what era she writes in you can always count on wonderful character development. Delecki has created another must-read series of books that you cannot wait to get to the next one. As always I look forward to the next book, they're that good. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

A short adventure involving two opposites who become attracted to one another. Miss Ella Evans is asked to help Lord Sebastian Grosvenor with a cover story to uncover French spies. They attend a May Day Celebration at her neighbor's estate. The ruse of a besotten Sebastian turns into the real thing. A lot of action in a short read. I enjoyed the story and the Code Breaker Series.

And a great series continues

This is another amazing story in a great series. The plot is full of suspense and emotional interludes. The characters are beautifully portrayed, with the strength to overcome their foes, and achieve their happiness. This is a brilliant book for anybody who loves steamy historical romances, that have a bit of suspense.

A lot of moving parts in this fast paced novella.

Ella is tasked with some May Day spying. Hey, anything for the crown, right?
Sebastian better snap to it.

Spying. Yep.
Some fake cover. Check.
A ‘napping of course.

Recommend.
