I have been looking for a book like this!! Detailed written instructions, but also step-by-step, clear photos. I think my daughter will enjoy this both with a parent and independently. She’s a knot-lover and a budding history buff, so I can’t wait to share the fun facts too.

Grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Knots for Kids by Buck Tilton and Christine Conners is currently scheduled for release on June 1 2022. This nonfiction book delivers relevant, curated content perfect for kids. Information on choosing the best knot for the situation, tying different types of common knots and hitches, selecting the best kinds of rope, and much more are covered. With step-by-step instructions (for both righties and lefties!) on tying the most used and useful knots, this is the perfect book to teach children how to tie knots like the experts.

Knots for Kids is a great resource for kids and adults alike. I learned a great deal from this book. It has been more years than I care to admit since my Girl Scout days, and this was both a refresher course for the basics and some new information on terminology and skills that I had either long forgotten or never learned. I thought the photographs and illustrations were extremely helpful, and clarified things more than words alone would have. I thought the instructions were easy to understand, the book well organized, and the information interesting and valuable. I liked that why and how to use each not was included, and the fun facts were a nice bit of extra information. This would be a good addition to a personal library and public and school libraries as well.

I earned my Eagle Scout award when I was a young teenager. Stereotypically you're supposed be good at knots to be a Boy Scout; realistically in my cohort we learned enough at camp to demonstrate knot tying to the counselor and get passed off and then promptly forgot said knots. (Side note, we did have some fun races to tie bowlines fastest and see if we could outtie the counselor.)

Probably my biggest regret from Boy Scouts (other than accidentally tossing a sealed can of peas into hot ashes) is not retaining knowledge about knots. I've seen my dad tie useful knots when we're camping or moving or just any old time, and I want to have that knowledge.

I grabbed this book at the library and it's a great resource--it has information on about 70 knots including how to tie them (with good pictures and instructions), when to use or not use them, and some interesting historical notes. Strongly recommended for anyone teaching knots to kids in any setting, and for any adult who is looking for an only mildly daunting introduction into the world of knots.

Next step: try to determine a top 5 or so set of knots to memorize and practice...
