Flames of Mars

Rate this book
Shifting by the light of Mars. . .

Shape-shifters exist and Violet now knows it. But her journey into the shifter world has only just begun. Violet thought she’d finally found her solace when her college friends took her into their remote community. . . yet Nathan’s betrayal is still soul-deep. She’s taking her new normal one day at a time. Until a group of shifters, who change by the light of Mars, brutally attack her home. The results are devastating. The loss is shattering. Yet Violet is now fuelled for revenge and raging with an eternal fire.

Since the last time Nathan saw Violet, he’s been held captive by hunters in Tempecrest, an island prison for shape-shifter gladiators. Many of the inmates have been slaughtered. . . and most of their blood is on Nathan’s hands. Once he’s free, the first thing on his agenda is to find Violet. He needs to explain. To apologize. To protect her.
But it soon becomes clear that shifting into his Veniri form may be bringing him closer to his death.

Unimaginable danger is closing in for both Violet and Nathan. How many people will Violet put on the line to reclaim what she’s lost? How far will Nathan go to claim Violet’s forgiveness?

Hey Hey!

I’m Tjalara Draper, a small town Aussie who's started turning my whimsical daydreams into the written and bookish format.
My dream of becoming an author has been a fascinating journey of making friends with other authors and meeting readers who enthusiastically enable my book buying addiction.

I’m inspired to craft stories that resonate with readers of all ages. My writing is a testament to the power of imagination and the boundless possibilities of the human spirit. I'm a sucker for complex and wild characters who tend to have a mind of their own and take my stories where I never expect.

I love exploring the ability to forge worlds and magic systems for all my favourite genres—paranormal, fantasy, and sci-fi—all dappled with action, adventure, and amorous entanglements.

Along with side questing as an indie author, I'm also a wife and mother, residing in our quaint little town on the edge of the Australian Outback. When not logged into the left hemisphere of my world building escapades, I’m fearlessly navigating the Aussie landscape, dodging drop bears, and avoiding man eating crocs.
Nah! Just kidding! There are no crocs where I live.

I got a free copy to review from the author, all opinions are my own.

I'm starting by saying that 3 stars isn't bad, at least not from me. I'm just a really picky reader, but I did enjoy this book, and as you can see from all the other reviewers, Flames of Mars is good. It could have been a 4 star, but I rated "Nika" 4 stars, and FoM did not live up to "Nika", it was good, but not as good. The same with Shards of Venus.

The action in FoM is amazing and I loved every second of those action scenes!

The shifters are so cool and the fact that Draper has come up with them just blows my mind.

My Nika is back and I'm so happy to read about her again, she's really my favourite character in this series.
Which pained me, because we mostly see her from others pov and they don't like her.. and she wasn't in this book as much as I would have liked, but the parts she were in were great!

Nathans pov was again my favourite. I just really prefer to get more of the shifters side and their workings.

Still not a fan of Thane, and I don't particularly like Violet either, she just really annoyed me, and I found her so stupid at times. I understand that she is going through a hard time and that she had a miserable life, but her actions just weren't likeable to me, eventhough I do understand them from her pov.
It also really grated my gears that Violet had a daughter because of course.. and that of course she also becomes a shifter, and a special one at that. I can get with Violet having a daughter eventhough it's really hard for veniri girls to be born. And I can even get with her becoming a shifter, but for her to become a shifter hybrid was just too much for me.

Anyways some things I did like was the chapter names, I forgot to mention it when reading Drapers other books. But I really like the chapter names, and I wish more authors would do that, I'm tired of the chapter 1, chapter 2 etc.
I again enjoyed the short chapters since I read on my phone.
Overall I did like this book, and I definitely recommend reading it. I'm also really looking forward to the third book!

Once again, I loved this book! It's the second book in this series. Book one was so amazing, and now that I've read book two, I'm even more amazed. The characters, world building, and storyline were on point like usual! I loved all the new characters that were introduced. They gave the story more depth and gained my interest even more and very quickly. I adored how these two books really let my imagination run wild into a realm beyond my most wildest dreams. I'm so stoked for a third book! I can't wait eeekkk!!! Again, I'd like to say Fantastic Writing Tjalara !! This series is a masterpiece!!!

Disclaimer: I Was Sent This Copy From The Author For An Honest Review. 📖

#flamesofmars By #tjalaradraperauthor Is The Second Book In The Celestial Shifters Series. I Read #shardsofvenus Very Recently And Was Fascinated With The Shifters From Different Planets, The Characters & A Plot That Continually Had Me Guessing. So I Knew That I Had To Waste No Time Diving Into Flames Of Mars To See What Was Gonna Happen Next ☄️

Sequels That Pick Up Immediately After The Events Of A First Book Are Definitely My Preference. I Think It Is Because Otherwise I Am Constantly Thinking About What Happened In That Time Gap. I Was So Glad That Flames Of Mars Picked Up Right After The Events That Took Place In Shards Of Venus. 😍

As This Is A Sequel Book I Can’t Go Into To Many Details As That Would Be Spoilers For Book One But I Can Describe Everything But The Plot 😝

I Have To Immediately Talk About Violet As A Character And One Of My Main POVS. Violet Had Already Gone Through More Then Most People Will In Their Lifetime In Just The Span Of Book One So I Thought She Would Be Okay In Book Two, How Wrong I Was! Violet Is Forced To Overcome So Many More Obstacles Truly To The Point Of Breaking Her Physically, Emotionally & Psychologically. It Is Nothing Less Than Inspiring To See The Resilience That Violet Displays As Such A Young Adult & The Lengths She Will Go To For The Ones She Loves. 😢

Nathan Our Other POV Again Has Taken The Reins Over My Emotions & My Heart. Nathan Was Definitely A Very Emotionally Guarded Character In Book One. I Won’t Say That He Let Down Those Walls But It Was Moving To Get To Understand Of The Layers Of His Humanity & Essence. The Man Has Suffered So Much Pain But Still Finds The Strength To Carry On. What A Man 💪🏻

We Also Had The Opportunity To Be Introduced To Some New Individuals. Tio Was Truly A Much Needed Sense Of Light & Comedic Value To Break The Tension. Although As New Characters Go Definitely Stealing The Spotlight Is Nika. Nika Is A Strong & Non-Apologetic Woman Shrouded In Mystique. I Was Equally Fascinated & Loathed Her Which Only Made Me More Drawn To Her!

I did say that the first book in this series, Shards of Venus, was exciting – this one goes into excitement, tension, on the edge of your seat overload!

Venus left off with a bang and Mars keeps the surprises and adventure coming. In this book we get to met Nika who is a bad assed hunter along with a few other new characters. These new characters help to provide more information about the various shifter races and their abilities, history and motivations. This is a very complex fantasy world and the information is once again slowly revealed allowing the reader to process each new piece before adding more.

Tio is a fun, seemingly not too serious character and he lightens the atmosphere and tension in many a stressful situation. Nika is totally the opposite, she is tense, distrustful and just plain angry. I loved her in the spin-off book and am interested in her journey through the series.

Pace – like a sprint race that just keeps going! I just want to read faster to find out what happens.

Characters – developing well. The characters from book one have been fleshed out more as we find out different aspects of their pasts. New characters have been introduced that contrast and support those we already love (or don't) and give the story more depth and interest. Our MC Violet has developed from an insecure girl into a fierce woman, determined and motivated to achieve her goals.

World Building – multilayered and each new character adds to the complexity and vividness of this world. But it is done in way that the reader doesn't get confused or overwhelmed.

Just to finish – that ending!!!!!! I immediately turned the page to find that the next book will be coming soon – I hope it is really soon, I need to know what happens now.

This is exciting and imaginative, vivid and emotional. I just want more.

This book was such a fresh shift of gears from the first. I thoroughly loved Shards of Venus and so thought I knew what I was in for with Flames of Mars, yet it managed to surprise me at every turn. I didn't enjoy this sequel as much, but hear me out - this is one of the book's strengths. Things get dark. It's the downturn of the tides of fortune for our protagonists, and everything is going wrong, and it's so DAMN COMPELLING to see how deep they dig themselves and how much worse their situation can get.

Picking up almost a year after the first left off, all of the characters are in vastly different circumstances than where we left them. Violet's priorities have changed irrevocably; Nathan's and Thane's have not, but their immediate daily goal, to merely survive to see the next one, has hardened them both in the time since we last saw them. The story world has expanded past our introduction to a war between Veniri and their hunters to include lycans, and shifters associated with Mars and Jupiter. The divisions between the hunters become clearer too, as their differing motives come slowly to light. Pride, betrayal, secrets, loyalties and unexpected changes factor in, and the result is an emotional political tangle of chess pieces all playing by their own private rules, a game where even winning might mean losing everything. This story got me frustrated, invested, worried, intrigued, even stroppily telling the book off as midnight approached and villainous characters popped up on the page when all I wanted was for them to GO AWAY and give my babies a break. Now I must await the third book and hope I get my wish.

Flames of Mars, the second book in the Celestial Shifters series by Tjalara Draper, is actually even better than the first (Shards of Venus)! In fact, I raced through this intense paranormal urban fantasy in just two days. But who wouldn’t, when lives are on the line & our favourite characters are in turmoil?!

Violet’s just become a mother &, although still reeling from the revelations that came in the first book, she must look to the future for her family. Meanwhile both Thane & Nathan are trapped on an island in a gladiator arena, constantly forced to fight for their lives while they try to find a way to escape…

There are grey characters within these pages, & although it’s tricky to know whether I love or hate them, I really do enjoy that Tjalara doesn’t give us just the traditional good vs. evil! People aren’t usually completely good or bad, & characters like Nika make me pay attention to what I’m reading.

I also love that I wasn’t given just Violet’s story, that we continue to know Nathan’s as well. He’s still just as interesting as ever & I desperately want to know how his story ends! I know he feels regret for how he handled things with Violet, but I really believe Nathan did the best he could at the time.

I truly loved diving back into the lives of these characters, & my heart was racing as I turned each page. Even without the shifter side of things, this beautiful second book in the Celestial Shifters series has packed so much emotion & excitement in it!

After reading Shards of Venus and spending several days HANGING OFF THE CLIFF AT THE END OF IT, I was so, so excited to get Flames of Mars! I was keen to know how things had gone for Nathan and Violet. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. Shards of Venus gave me everything I hoped for and more. What I love about this series is that Draper does not go all info-dumpy in the first, for the sake of fleshing out the world. Instead, she introduces readers to the information when they need to know it. This means that it is always relevant, and always a joy to read. It is easy to follow along with the story, knowing that the connections will be made at the precise right time. The character development in this was a joy, and I admire Draper's action scenes. The only negative thing I can think of is that the book ended but... I suppose that is inevitable. This book had intrigue, action, tension, betrayals, and some fascinating twists.

This sequel was next Level. I loved the extensive cast and I was pleased to be introduced to a few of the other shifter races from other planets. I could really feel the emotions of the characters and enjoyed the relationships they shared with each other, whether they be love or hate. My favorite character is Nathan. I loved the way he banters with all of the other characters. I have a soft spot for Violet too though, and as far as arcs go, she showed significant growth.
The ending of this book had me biting my nails. So good. I can’t wait for book 3.

I picked this up after reading the first book, and was desperate to know what would happen next. Once again you’re pulled along on the journey with Violet, Nathan and the other side, losing all sense of time because you just need to know what happens next. It was beautifully written, and every twist and turn along the way had me on the edge of my seat. I adored the story, the characters and the dynamic between them all. I need book three and to know what happens next! Very much recommend to all those who love urban fantasy!

The world Violet lives in expands once again and there is so much more to the shifter world now. Definitely an original take, which I can appreciate. But this 100% feels more sci-fi than anything else. I don’t mind sci-fi tho. My biggest problem with this book is Violet. She is everything I hate in a FMC, even if I get that she’s going through a hard time. Most, if not all, of her decisions are stupid and inexcusable. Nathan and Thane are the most interesting characters. But Sagan’s decisions make almost zero sense to me.

Book 2 was just as cleverly written as book 1. I loved all the twists and turns they kept me on my toes, and there were a few times during the action scenes where I had to remind myself to keep breathing.
I enjoyed learning about the new shifters and their powers, and found it very interesting learning what happened when these powers were combined. I’m really looking forward to seeing where book 3 takes us.

Tjalara has done it again - this book kept glued to my kindle with the unexpected turns. I'm usually good with predicting what might happen next but I couldn't predict at all in this one. Flames of Mars has raised so many emotions in me and I need to know where the story goes.

This book took me on such a journey, I cannot wait for the next one to come out!

I loved the way different elements started coming into play and kept my mind ticking over and thinking about what might come next - I could never pick it which I loved being surprised, a few moments I had to pick my jaw up off the floor!

The lore that was coming into this book was so intriguing that I had to keep reading to discover more of the backstory, as I’ve said before, I’m a sucker for lore and this book had all the great details that I love!

I found the character development really well done in this book, the growth compared to the first book was really well done and I loved seeing the MC overcoming her difficulties, I could see where she was coming from and her thought processes which just made me feel more connected to her.

Highly recommend this book and I’m very keen for the next one which I don’t know how I’ll survive waiting!

Gotta find me a tall shifter prince who has electricity powers and a penchant for wipped cream. (Could do without the strangulation kink). But that whole interaction, was just, hilarious 😂. All the characters are amazing. And we got Tio for this book which like. He's the best.

This series just keeps getting better and BETTER! The world building was gradual in the first and really set the book up for a good start to the series. But WOW the second really grabs you and pulls you in with the details of the characters and surroundings. What really got me hooked was the plot twists and action scenes. I got so hung up in the story before I realized I had read half of it in just a few hours!

What I enjoyed the most in this book was the introduction of more shifter races. It opens the readers world even more to information about what hunters experience as well as shifter races. All around amazing book, 100% definitely recommend!

I loved book one, so I was pretty sure I’d love the second one…..and I was right! 😄 Book one ended on a cliff hanger and this book really teased me with the reunion I was hoping for, creating tension and making me read super quick!

The characters continued to develop beautifully, and I especially enjoyed meeting a new species (with Tito being a particular favourite of mine). The building of the different species has really impressed me so far; they’re all so unique, with well thought through attributes. I hope to meet more in the next book! We’ve also been given a character to hate (I think)- Nika! She’s so complicated and I really can’t decide whether I’m meant to love or hate her (or a bit of both). I cannot wait to read the book based on her character.

There are some fantastic settings in this book and the dual POV follows different story lines at once, keeping me hooked throughout. Tjalara really upped the ante in this book and the research lab vibe creeped me out so much (in a good way). This added a great dystopian-type feel! I also loved the fighting pit idea, adding such a gritty and emotional side to the story. I felt the characters hardships, especially Nathan!

Another five star read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
