Second Chances

There was just no getting around the fact that Holly Johnson was fat. Not cute or round or pleasantly plump, but fat. But she was also smart and funny and impish.
Chance Thompson, on the other hand, is gorgeous. He's also helpful and supportive. And dominant.
Chance is always willing to guide Holly with a well-needed spanking. But is it too much to hope their relationship can lead to more?

Carolyn was one of you as a kid, with the intriguing seeds planted in her head of the shivering thrill-thoughts that came with words like spanking, or discipline. As with you, those kinds of words and thoughts connected the heated blush of her cheeks with feelings elsewhere, which got more and more interesting the older she got.

I bet you know just what I'm talking about.

Like some, she started writing down these thoughts, escaping into short stories of reluctant heroes willing to take someone they love in hand when it's for her own good... and more shadowy thoughts as her imagination matured.

And like some, she started sharing her writings in newsgroups once she gained some confidence.

There's nothing like the perfectly-turned phrase, the handful of words that can make a feeling wash over you. And if you're reading this, then you have within you some intense feelings that most of the world doesn't understand -- but Carolyn does, and she writes those passions with wondrous abandon. Her specialties are Spanking Romance and Adult Ageplay, so we've grouped the many examples of her work that way.

Spanking Romance Classics are sweeping love stories which dare (in a very un-PC way) to allow their heroine to feel the special love of a strong man who will take her in hand when it's best for her. Carolyn writes very real, rich characters and stories that aren't just excuses to jump from spanking scene to spanking scene. If the timeless tango of pursuing ardor touches you, and the head-rush of Adoring Discipline intrigues you, then you'll love Carolyn's stories!

Review of Second Chances by Carolyn Faulkner

Some things are meant to go together...

Peanut butter and chocolate.

Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Butch and Sundance.

Spanking and pregnancy...uh, not so much. Seriously. Not a good idea.

Second Chances (a contemporary, spanking erotica) has a laundry list of problems, not the least of which is ending a spanky erotica with a pregnancy. The funny thing is....despite all of these problems, I still really enjoyed the book.

First, let's start with the duds....

--copious grammatical errors--usually the kiss of death for me
--unlikable heroine...she's whiny and bratty, has a horrible self-image because of her size
--jarring POV changes; in general, not well-written
--after a fairly concise storyline, the author decides to throw in a dead baby, emotional meltdown (by hero), marriage proposal, marriage and pregnancy at the end of the book...all that was missing was the dead body in the library
--the spanking theme crossed the boundary (for me) from acceptable to uncomfortable

In spite of all of this, it also has a wonderful and romantic premise that I adore in romance novels. The heroine is a big girl, and the hero loves her, worships her, protects her, takes care of her, and lusts for her (and spanks the holy crap out of her, too...but let's not go there just yet). After reading Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon, I became a fan of "curvy girl" heroines....not all women are a size 2, and I like to see big girls get the guy for a change.

It's not really about the size. It's about the love. Regardless of the hero (or heroine's) flaws (too big, too small, war-injured, illegitimate, unfortunate tendency to turn into a werewolf when the moon is full, etc etc), I want the heroine (or hero) to fall madly, deeply in love, to see beyond the physical imperfections and find the true beauty of her (or his) soul-mate's being. This is a very, very romantic theme, and I personally love it.

Chance, the hero in this story, is a fabulous guy. He is patient and protective; he doesn't let Holly get away with belittling herself, he is sexy and domineering, and....did I mention patient? The freakin' guy waits ONE WHOLE FREAKIN' YEAR to be reunited with Holly after making a stupid mistake. He loves her just the way she is. He is a gem, and the perfect romance hero. (Well, except for the spanking thing....hee hee!).

Now....onto the spanking thing. I love a good fictional spanking as much as the next guy. In my mind, spanking is an extension of the alpha male exerting dominance over his woman...caveman-ish, but also sexy. One good swat on the fanny, then a lusty bout of love-making is always welcome. However, when the spanking crosses over into inflicting real pain....I have a problem with it.

This is my own personal opinion. I realize many folks are digging the whole BDSM thing right now, but in my mind, a true hero doesn't hurt his mate. I'm not really interested in diving into the whole psychological platform for this sort of behavior.

I just don't find hurting someone sexy. That's it. And I definitely think if an author is going to go that route in a book, then there shouldn't be any kids, pregnancies, etc etc. Call me crazy, but BDSM and carpools in the minivan seem like a strange partnership to me. I was about 75% okay with the spanking sitch in this book, but there was one scene that focused a lot on welts, pain, etc that made me cringe.

So, I have a lot of conflicted feelings about this book, but the bottom line (pun totally intended) is that I liked it. I'm giving it a B/B- grade (3.5 stars on goodreads). In spite of all of the problems, I loved the hero, and I loved how much he adores his big, beautiful soul-mate.

Grade: B/B-

Well, I did love the insecure, chubby heroine and the angst. But, the spanking. They did not properly negotiate a BDSM relationship. Not nearly enough communication, no safe word... And sex seemed to be the cure-all for betrayal. The timeline was confusing at first, it jumped around a bit, but once it settled, I liked it. Then slowly lost interest, to be honest. I'd check out other books by this author if they featured my preferred heroine, though. (2.5 stars)

Personally I am not into the whole BDSM thing and all that it entails. But I have read a few books... enough to know that you don’t start “spanking “ someone to leave welts and heated red marks. After a while I just so lost interest in this book cause honestly the hero sounded like a a stalker/ bully to me. Heroine tells him no, he pushes his way in and tells she will do it and like it, if not she will be punished? Seriously? I foresee in 10 years time when the heroin has had 4 kids and he is beating the crap out her cause he is “ punishing her” for not making the bed and she is walking around with a sore bum and a black eye we will then realize that in fact the hero was just a big fat bully who like to beat on the heroine.

None of the punishments I read felt like BDSM to me but more like a boyfriend who likes to slap his girl around. The heroine had absolutely no back bone. Oh she had lots of thoughts but never did any of them transpire beyond a thought. The heroine was so weak both in mind and body. She refused to see the better in herself and the Hero simply just walked all over her. This is what abusers do.. they take away your thought and your ability to do simple things for yourself. I realize that the author was trying to make the hero sound possessive and helpful but in this case he did not read that way for me. For me the hero came off pretty much a jerk, bully, and so like a would be abuser. This book did not work for me.

Sorry had to give this a 3.5, due to the fact, that HollyBee was getting on my last nerve. Hey I understand she is a big girl, but come one, How in the hell will you have a cat and a hairy dog, and you have asthma, WTF! look I know she was depress for seeing her man kissing another woman; I truly understand. Chance was there taking care of her, he felt guilty the way things happened. He loved her so.

Re read 6/18

Don't know why I enjoy this little novella so much, but I do. I've read a few times, so I figured a positive review was warranted. Honestly, I don't remember the first time I read it, but I've always enjoyed it.🙂

“Dominant Spanking Never Fails!”

OMG! This book is really good! It was funny and steamy…’Ohhh it soo hot in here.’

It’s about Holly a full-figured woman who works as a teacher in a small town, she has this long time feelings with Chance a hunky paramedic guy. She has issues about her figure about being undesirable and ugly, but Chance had fallen in love with her. Then it turns out a thrilling steamy romance and more dominant spanking. You may encounter a REAL HEART BREAK that makes you ache. The twist and turns keeps you reading and reading until you finished the book.

I love it and I can’t spoil the fun, but YOU’VE GOTTA READ THIS!

This one has the potential to be 4 stars, but just missed that mark for me.
I found both the hero and heroine (Chance and Holly) to be very likeable; each with their own faults that gave the story a "real" feel.
There were some distracting editing errors that made me read a sentence more than once before I figured out what was wrong.
On the positive side, the story did an good job of putting you into the minds of the H/h. The H's point of view was well represented. It did go astray a couple of times with filler type information, but all in all a very enjoyable story.
Glad I have a few more Carolyn Faulkners in my tbr.

It started off way too slow for my liking and the flashback parts drove me a wee bit mad. I like things in order, not flashing back but the story starts where the drama starts basically. It was a sweet book but it felt really rushed. Also the heroine seemed pretty immature and petty at times. I didn't really have any issue with the hero but at the same time I can't help but feel the hero cheated on her physically, the other woman attacked him. Yes, I feel mentally he cheated on her because he was turned on by it. Meh, it's such a fine line between cheating and not. I guess that's between the hero and heroine and other peoples opinions about their relationship.

2 1/2 stars.

Here is the thing with this book.... did he cheat in my eyes... yeah he did. Why? Because he kissed her back and got aroused. That right there normally stops be from finishing a book, but I had pad $15.99 for it.

But, there were more things in this books that annoyed me. The D/s relationship that wasn't really a D/s relationship. Or the weird writing and jarring text. The "present day" heading when she really meant "past" or how about the repeated chapters. Yes related chapters in the book.

I'm really not feeling this book. There were just too many "weird" whinny things about it for me to like it.

Why do the females talk like 4th graders. Why do dd writers think their female leads have to talk, act and think like a 10 year old child. STOP writing dd stories and making the female lead sound like a child. Write about a man in a dd relationship with a WOMAN. Write a grown female lead that talks like a grown female and acts like a grown female. I’m not interested in men with children, and the way these female leads are written, they sound like children. Write better stories!

I enjoyed the fact that the heroine in this novel was full-figured, but her issues with her body image got a bit grating near the end. Overall, worth the read. Book contained some light bdsm in the form of spanking. The relationship between the two characters was well developed, but I didn't like this couple as much as some of the couples in her other books.

This is another great story with plenty of spankings to go along with the actual plot. The story is about a woman who is heavy and insecure and ho finds it hard to believe her hot fire fighting boyfriend really wants her. There are definitly some conflicts along the way but in the end they both get their HEA.
