Show Me a Marriage of Convenience

Rate this book
An ex-player cowboy with a little son, the boy's shy plus-size aunt, and a reluctant modern marriage of convenience only the boy is excited about… A sweet, clean, wholesome romance with a happily-ever-after!

After three near-death experiences in one day-okay, maybe burning dinner and falling from a tree shouldn't count-Kade Clark worries about his son's future if he's not around to protect him. The last thing he wants is for his son to become a bargaining chip between a con artist grandfather and a ruthless ex trying to get their hands on the family fortune. So Kade agrees to a crazy proposal from the woman his child adores. But as a former foster kid, Kade learned to walk away before getting hurt. Can he now learn to stay and love?

Heather Johnson dreams of a real marriage with the man her sister abandoned, not a fake one. But the rumor is Kade might leave their small town again and take her darling nephew with him. She's reluctant to trust a womanizer-husband or not. If she allows love for him to ignite her heart, will her marshmallow-soft heart become roasted and burned?

Cowboy Crossing Romances series set in a small town in the Show Me State is about curvy forty-something women and the swoon-worthy single dad cowboys who love them, though sometimes those rugged handsome men might need a nudge-or a push.

While the premise for this book was a little far fetched, (Kade didn't really need to marry to provide for his son in the event of his death...what he needed was a good attorney to set up an iron clad will and trust for him) there was still a lot to love about it. And, let's be honest, most contemporary romances are a little far fetched anyway...amiright?

The thing I loved most about this book was that, while it was a story of two individuals learning to love each other, it was just as much a story of these same individuals learning to love themselves, despite their flaws. Alexa was able to do this in such a sweet and hilarious way, it enables the reader to fall in love with the characters right along with them.

I also really appreciated the inner dialog of the MC, Heather. As an overweight introvert myself, I have had some of those thoughts myself and can attest to the fact that Alexa was spot on. That scene where Kade carries Heather over the threshold: priceless. I was in tears laughing.

The thing that I appreciated most about this book is that there was no superfluous drama. I absolutely abhor those romances where a misunderstanding occurs and you have to wait through 10 chapters of the two main characters hating each other while pining away for each other at the same time. This is NOT that. Rather than using drama to hilight how shallow and flawed her characters continued to be, Alexa used the issues that cropped up between Kade and Heather to show how much they had grown throughout their relationship. I was especially proud of Heather, who learned to believe she was worthy of love, whether it was Kade who loved her or someone else.

Definitely worth checking out!

This was such a great story from the very first page to the very last. I love the characters, they are just so loving. Kade and Landon had such a great relationship and Landon's aunt Heather was just the sweetest person ever and she had so much love for Landon. I loved the marriage of convience scenerio and throw in all of the other fun and exciting things that happened and you have a best seller which I believe is what Alexa has done. I don't want to say too much because I am so excited about this book that I am afraid I will give it away. This is going to be one of my favorite series, I can't wait for the next book. I also love the fact that the women are not always super skinny, it just makes it more realistic this way. Another amazing job Alexa.

This was a sweet and clean love story. I was instantly drawn in by the curvaceous Heather and her marriage proposal. I loved the romance between Kade and Heather and I thought it was very well written. I thought it was cute (and just like a man!) that once Kade’s eyes were opened to the idea of marriage and how much Heather did for him and his son, he started to think marriage to her was a good idea and he started to see in her a different light.
I liked that Kade was a man of faith and his faith started to rub off on Heather. I would’ve loved to see that expressed a little more by the end of the story. My favorite thing about this story is that Kade loved her despite her extra pounds and he tried to get her to see herself the way he and God saw her. I have read books before with a plus size heroine and by the end of the story I felt like she really wasn’t loved (she had lost weight, or the guy had struggled with his feelings for her due to her size, etc) but this story resounds with the message that people come in all shapes and sizes and we are still worthy of love! Beautiful!
I thought this was a cute and sweet story and will be looking for more by this author.

My review today is on the Christian Romance, Show Me a Marriage of Convenience. This is book one in the Cowboy Crossing Series. I really enjoy Alexa's work and I'm thrilled when she brings out another book. This is an awesome love story. It's well written and heart warming. I know you will love it.

Kade Clark is shocked when his babysitter purposes to him. (He is a single father. His sister-in-law babysits his son Landon. His ex-wife had run off with another man and took everything she could but gave him the boy.) That was the start of a bad day for Kade. He has three near-death experiences all in one day. What would happen to Landon if something happened to him. His ex-wife would come in and take everything he had built up or his birth father would come in and take everything. Kade finally agrees to the marriage. The boy loves his aunt. He could do this but he soon finds that there is more to Heather than he ever dreamed.

Heather Johnson has taken care of Landon most of the boy's life. Her father made her promise to ask Kade to marry her but how would it work. Kade is a player but Heather is plain, forty years old, heavy and tries to hide it with baggy clothes. She is nothing like her beautiful sister that broke Kade's heart. She doesn't want Kade to leave and take his son with him. She loves that boy never mind the crush she has on his father. She's shocked when he agrees.

A fascinating journey of ups and downs to find love and make a family. God has a plan for these three; a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your Heart and watch Him work out your mess even in this time of crisis.

Two people brought together over the love of a child

What is not to love about a marriage of convenience. In a way this one was brought about for selfish reasons. Heather proposes marriage to her ex brother in law as a means of keeping him here, not so much for him but his son, her nephew, Landon. Who she absolutely adores and can not bear the thought of losing him. Kade accepts because no matter what happens to him he doesn’t want his son to fall into the wrong hands and he knows that he will, be safest with Heather.

What neither of them envisioned was relationship developing between them. But life has a way of coming in and changing g things up. Kade gives Heather the confidence to love herself and in turn love him. Heather shows him that your past doesn’t need to define you, and that she loves him regardless of his past.

The characters we wonderfully portrayed. They were flawed and had hangups and that made them all the more endearing and relatable to.

A definite must read. Can’t wait for the rest of the series.

LOVED LOVED LOVED this tender-hearted romance! What do a handsome popular (in the romance department) cowboy and an overweight woman have in common? More than an energetic little boy they both love and care for, apparently! Heather's had a crush on her sister's ex-husband for years, and she's happily given up her life to help care for her nephew after her sister abandoned him. Kade does his best at parenting but begins to see Heather in a new light when she makes him a proposition he can't (or can he?) resist. As the story unravels, both characters strip back their outer shell and insecurities and become more transparent to each other. Heather's unattainable dream is to be loved the way she is (where dress size doesn't matter); Kade, abandoned as a child and shipped from foster home to foster home, has always needed to walk out on people before they walked out on him. I enjoyed "watching" them fall in love. They bring out the best in each other, discovering truths about themselves as they spend more time together. . .And Landon and their dog Dara add cuteness to the adventure--never a dull moment! Ms. Verde tells a great story where crisis, self-doubt and other conflicts can actually bring a couple together rather than tear them apart! I enjoyed this clean romance and highly recommend it. I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.

What a wonderful story. I love that the heroine is not a perfectly formed Barbie imitation, but a real woman with curves and the insecurities many of us have had to deal with.

Kade didn’t take too long to see past her sloppy cloths and insecurity to the beautiful gem hidden inside.

Landon was a little boy in need of a mother, and who better to step in than his favorite auntie? His enthusiasm was endearing and made him a pivotal character in the story.

I loved the progression of the relationship that develops as the three of them become a real family. Full of heart this is a wonderful romance.

How nice to see Alexa Verde write a story in the Show Me Series by Jesse Gussman. This story had wonderful characters in Heather, Kade and Kade's son, Landon. Heather is Landon's babysitter and his aunt. Her sister and Kade are divorced and Kade has full custody of Landon. Heather proposes a marriage of convenience so that Kade will not leave Cowboy Crossing with his son. This was her father's idea. The only problem is Heather is really in love with Kade and that made the story very interesting.
I liked how both characters often turned to God for help and for guidance. Kadfe has unresolved abandonment issues to work through and Heather has her own trust issues after growing up in her sister's shadow. I really enjoyed the story and the ending. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

I began this review with a list of important concepts portrayed in this book, and it is full of them. However, that type of cold assessment does a disservice to this page turning oxymoron. This book was both sweetly slow-blooming and a (clean) scorcher. It’s a unique story that demonstrates a character’s yet unrealized love with caviar sandwiches for breakfast: gross and adorable.
There are so many sweet moments in this story and both the Hero, Cade, and the heroine, Heather, had a beautiful arc of their own personal development. Lovely.
I received an ARC copy of this book, and I am leaving a voluntary review.

A cut wrenching romance with descriptive details, imperfect characters, page turning plot, relatable themes, and a satisfying resolution. . As a Midwesterner, who lived in Michigan and has visited Missouri, I enjoyed the Midwest setting. Delightful name of the town. Also enjoyed how Alexa Verde included the Missouri State Motto. Nice attention to detail. Alexa Verde is a master when it comes to incorporating and describing contemporary issues of abuse, abandonment, self image, forgiving oneself for things one has no control over, alcoholism.

A successful single father who used to be a player and has issues about his DNA, his ex-sister-in-law who has body image issues, but is brilliant with computers, a small lovable boy and a very large puppy make for a happy family in this small town sweet romance. I loved how each of the adults were able to get over themselves, their fears, labels from the past, and just find love together. I also loved how the town and their families were rooting for them the whole time.

What could go wrong with marrying your ex’s sister to keep her as your son’s caretaker? Kade has never realized how wonderful Heather is and what she can bring to his life, not just Landon’s. Factor in his ex, his conman birth father, Heather’s insecurities, Kade’s insecurities and the fact that Heather loves him, then just sit back and enjoy the story. I look forward to Alexa Verde’s next story in this series.

I loved reading Show Me the Marriage of Convenience. Kade and Heather, plus Landan and Dara, won my heart immediately. This marriage of convenience story is filled with great characters, I enjoyed watching Kade and Heather overcome their pasts, accept God's grace and finally fall in love. I cannot wait to read more in this new series. You do not want to miss this great romance.

This is the first book that I have read by Alexa. I really enjoyed it. It was a clean, Christian-based romance book. The way Heather and Kade got together was kind of crazy, but their lives together was amazing.

Sweet Small Town Romance.
Practically everyone in this book has had a failed marriage, so it’s all about second chances, learning to trust and acceptance of self through God. Heather has image and weight insecurities and Kade fears abandonment and so has always been a love them/leave them type of guy. In agreeing to a marriage of convenience to protect a 5 year old boy, they start to see below the surface facade of each other and love and admiration soon follow. Enjoyable read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a cute story by Alexa Verde. I liked that she wrote this book in line with Jessie Gussman’s Show Me State series but that the style was her own. I really liked the story and I liked the characters. I liked how Heather gained confidence in her self as she was loved by Kade. I love how even though they married out of convenience, they grew to love each other quickly. I thought Alexa Verde did a great job and I look forward to reading more books by her.

I LOVED this story! I have encountered so many broken people in my life and my heart went out to Kade and Heather. I could understand their broken hearts and souls. Life had not been kind and they both had baggage because of their pasts. It was heart breaking at times to read the words as the brokenness affected them and Kade’s son, Landon. I can gladly recommend this book to anyone. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a review.

Kade and Heather haven’t had good luck with relationships and each are dealing with insecurities that make it hard for them to believe that they are worthy of love. Kade’s childhood with his neglectful and manipulative father left scars on his soul. Even though he was later adopted by a loving family, he believes he could be just like his father...a guy who uses and discards people in the pursuit of getting more for himself. His player past and his divorce from a woman too much like his father have reinforced his beliefs that he is not suited to a long term relationship. The only good thing that resulted from his marriage is his adorable little boy, Landon. Heather is the sister of Kade’s ex, and a loving aunt to young Landon. She will admit to herself that she has long been attracted to Kade, but she is under no illusions that he is attracted to her or even sees her as being anything other than his son’s babysitter. When it comes to her looks, Heather knows that men see her as being the too chubby, nerdy sister of Kade’s beautiful ex. She proposes marriage to Kade in an effort to keep him from leaving town with her nephew. She is shocked when Kade agrees to it a few days later, after a little soul searching, asking God’s guidance and plenty of nudging from his family. Their marriage of convenience fosters a new awareness of each other, and reexamination of their own feelings, desires and hopes for the future. When they must face the reappearance of past troublemakers, they both allow their insecurities and doubts to overshadow the tender feelings growing in their hearts. Could their marriage of convenience really lead to a love match?

The characters are fascinating and very real to life. They face challenges that are relatable and draw our attention, leaving us hoping for that love match. Their story is beautifully written and offers great insight into the turmoil of emotions that can be part of falling in love. It was also wonderful to discover the close family ties among the Clark clan....the ribbing and teasing, as well as the unconditional love and support. I can’t wait to read more about the other Clark siblings! I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review

Show Me A Marriage of Convenience is a emotional rollercoaster of a story. Kade has a young son that he is trying to take care of while running a growing ranch. Josephine decided being an actress in California was more important than being a wife to Kade and mother to Landon. They divorced and Kade got full custody and he seldom sees his wife. She was a sweet woman until they married and she did a complete change. Kade felt that he was lucky that Heather, Josephine's sister came to help take care of Landon. Landon loves Heather and she completely turned Landon's attitude around from what it was with Josephine and Kade before the divorce. When she took a week off, he went through 2 or 3 nannys due to Landon's tantrums.
Heather grew up having to watch as her mother gave everything to Josephine and never to her. Since she has always been plus size and having to wear thick glasses, she was bullied in school until one day the Clark siblings seen her being knock down to the floor and them standing over her calling her names and Liberty and Mac stopped them and asked her to come eat at their table. That is when Liberty and Heather became best friends. Heather is now a great IT and web designer she can do from home. With Kade needing help she has taken over raising Landon and training their large dog Dara. She feels she is fat and wears loose clothes to cover up her size. But, one morning she asked Kade to marry her so she could raise Landon full time and make a home for Kade. He was surprised and when he talked to his family and they all agreed it was a great idea much to Kade's surprise he agreed to do it. Landon was over the moon because Heather was going to be his Mommy! But, Kade was not so sure if this marriage was going to work.

It's been a few years since I saw myself free to read wherever I wanted when I wanted until today.
It's been a while since I don't have any of my favorite authors with something new to read so I thought...
Why not pick a random book to read and that's what I did.
Something in the blurb talked to me so why not go for it?
Like you can guess after the beginning of this review, Alexa Verde is a new author to me.
A new author that had the ability to capture my attention with just the blurb.
Show Me a Marriage of Convenience is the book that I'm talking about and explores the lives of Kade and Heather.
Kade is a single dad whose only focus is on raising his son the best he can. He's worried that after his death his son ends up with his grandfather or worse his ex. So what can he do to prevent it?
Heather is a dreamer. She dreams of getting married to her sister's ex. Twisted right? Wrong, coming from her it's not a bad thing.
She adores her nephew and will do everything for him such as...
Great book. I loved it so much.
Great plot, well written, engaging, and intense.
It's amazing the way others see us when we don't truly see ourselves.
The characters worked perfectly with each other and you could feel the love between them all.
This book gave us a great lesson. A lesson that proves that family isn't only the one by blood.
Love will be a great part of it.
I loved all the characters and I can't wait to read the next book from this series.
Great book Alexa.

This audiobook is the first in the author’s Cowboy Crossing stories . It’s a touching , sweet, clean , Christian romance about two individuals that throughout the story, grow not only within themselves but also with each other.
Kade Clark , is a divorced single Dad who adores his little boy and will do anything for him. He knows the importance of being a parent, especially after having been in the foster system, before being adopted and has a thief for a biological dad.
Heather Johnson is his shy, overweight former sister-in-law who takes care of his little boy as if he was her own, and has secretly been in love with Kade for years. But her self esteem and self confidence is very low and she sees no future, until she proposes a marriage of convenience.
It was interesting to see how their relationship changes and feelings are revealed.
These two quotes from the audiobook not only summarize it but are also very much applicable to our lives.
“It’s not about what we’ve been given , it’s about what we do with it”
“It’s not about the family we’ve been born into, it’s about the family we choose.”
Though at times it was a little slow paced for me and I felt that the author missed the opportunity of integrating characters from author Jessie Gussman stories in Cowboy Crossing, it was an entertaining story.

I thoroughly enjoyed Reading Show Me a Marriage of Convenience by Alexa Verde. This well-written book has characters that are so well-fleshed out that you feel like you could pick up the phone and call them to have a chat. I found myself rooting for them sometimes and cringing for them at other times. Kade and Heather both carry baggage all the way from their childhood and sometimes that causes them to react in ways that are less than productive for their relationship. The one thing that they know that they have in common is their love for Landon, Kade's son and Heather's nephew. Although there are bumps along the way, there is an extraordinary HEA. There are also several great humorous scenes sprinkled throughout the book.
One of my favorite lines from the book was "If you treat people well, they might become precious gifts to you instead of being a source of anger."
I recommend this book to readers of clean/wholesome romance and Christian romance. I definitely plan to read more of Alexa Verde's works.
I received a complimentary copy. I chose to write a review and share my opinion of this sweet romance.

I've never been crazy about romance novels, but do I enjoy Alexa Verde's clean, Christian love stories? YES, INDEED, I do! Not just your every day love story, but they always include some intrigue and mystery. Though Heather proposed to Kade, while helping him out, and it was definitely a marriage of convenience, will they fall in love? You probably guessed the answer. Now read the book and find out if you were correct! 😄

Kade's brother, Mac, had also been hurt by a former love, and I started to wonder if there would be a later book about him. Now I have learned that, yes, there will be, and I'm excited to read it!

Merged review:

Engrossing story about an insecure overweight older gal who has feeling for her late sister's husband. As she helps care for his precious son, her father encourages her to marry the man. So what does shy Heather do? She proposes to him, of course! Will he accept? Will a marriage of convenience produce any happiness? Read it and find out!

PS Love the clean, Christian atmosphere!

I will begin by saying that I loved the characters and the storyline of this book. Kade and Heather are people that are easy to identify with and their one greatest quality is the deep love that they have for Landon, Kade's son and Heather's nephew. The book starts with a bang that immediately grabs the reader. Put that together with issues they are both facing and you have an awesome beginning to a new series by Alexa Verde that is also built on a series by Jessie Gussman. With these two authors this promises to be a winner for lovers of Christian based romance. God's love, blessings and guidance are shown repeatedly to this couple as they find their HEA. My one complaint was that the story dragged at times with repeated references to Kade's biological father. Other than that - a solid Gold 5 read!

I received an ARC copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest review with my own personal opinions.
