Undisclosed location, present day. Fearless military pilot Ty Granger has dedicated his life to hunting down those who tamper with time. Edwards Air Force Base, 1954. Alice Merriweather, who is much more than the secretary she pretends to be, is desperate to prove her extraordinary creation can fly. So when a handsome stranger offers to be her test pilot, she overlooks his claim that he’s from the future. Fearing that a rival plans to sabotage her project, Alice risks trusting the mysterious man who treats her like an equal.

A clean, sweet romance and sequel to #1, it is not a stand-alone. But, if having read #1, it is good to follow-up with this one. I totally enjoyed this book, and as usual, Pauline writes about strong independent, think-for-themselves ladies who like to direct their own destinies and the considerate gentlemen who they fall in love with. The historical aspect is an added bonus.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review-- thank you!

If you know the phrase 'Drama, Drama, Drama', I offer a new one from this book: ‘intrigue, intrigue, intrigue’. There is a lot to take in with this book. The author is telling a tale occurring in at least two time phases at the same time. The segments are clearly defined but still require concentration to keep up with them.

This book cannot be recommended as a stand-alone book. Having not read book 1, I was completely lost for a good part of the book. Only if you have read book 1 will this book completely work for you.

The characters are well defined and are three dimensional. Tom and Alice make this book shine. The focus on the 1954 plane made this reader think of the Avro Aero and that is what drew me into this book. That aspect of the book is well done. The role that Alice has in the development of the plane is impressive and well presented.

Just in Time will appeal to a reader who wants to be on the edge of their seat for hours on end. The book simply draws the reader in and will keep you invested to the very end. Fans of great espionage films and books will love this book. Fans of historical plane development will love this book.

Personally, I was taken aback by the lack of a clear definition of who the enemy was. Never once simply stating who the enemy is was an original approach. I was fully prepared to give this professionally written book five stars but without the clarity required, I just couldn't. A pretty excellent book that is this close to being superb.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.

Now available in print and coming to audio in October!

Here's an excerpt:

It was not always a good thing to get what you want. Or to know so much about what could go wrong, Tyson Granger thought a bit wryly. For instance, he wished he didn’t know that the human body fell at one hundred and twenty-two miles an hour, and if the time machine failed to form a vortex, that was how fast he’d be going when he hit the ground. He also knew exactly what it would do to his body—in addition to killing him.

There was also the possibility that the vortex would form, that it would work—and send him to the wrong time or place. He could end up nose-to-nose with a dinosaur, he supposed. Crap happened.

And despite knowing these things, here he sat, the engines rumbling through his body, straps holding him in place, as the plane clawed its way to drop altitude. There was a metallic taste in his mouth that he told himself was the oxygen or the mask. Not fear.
Drop altitude. For the falling part.

You know you have to jump into the center of a vortex without a parachute.

Time is complicated. If you read time travel science fiction, you already understand this. You know, go back in time and affect your own future for good or for bad. Be very careful!

But what if someone else is messing with your timeline? Wouldn’t you want to fix it? Yeah – this is going to get complicated.

Sound interesting? Just in Time is the edge-of-your seat, messing-with-time adventure that appeals to the “Time is Complicated” crowd.

I got to the end of the book and I realized I never really figured out who was messing with time to begin with. But this story is not really about those people. It is about Ty and Alice. A man from the future meets his dream girl in 1954. Alice and Ty appreciate the other-timeline-ness of each other’s personality, even if Alice does not know Ty’s origin. Alice is amazed at Ty’s respect for her as an intelligent thinking woman, while Ty is heartened by Alice’s ability to excel in an environment where women were mostly encouraged to marry and have a family. And from there, they only grow to love each other more. This is a sweet romance with plenty of chemistry between two people that cannot possibly stay together across time. I say the HEA seems impossible, but, it is a romance, so it has to happen… somehow.

John Phillips is the shadowy man in black whose motivation remains a mystery. George Merriweather is the man who takes credit for the work of Alice and of Alice’s mother before her. Because, you know, only a man could come up with such an amazing advanced plane. These two men muddy the mystery of the time meddler and try to come between Ty and Alice.

The story of Ty, Alice, Phillips and Merriweather is wrapped in the ever-changing future that is being monitored by Mel and Jack (from Out of Time). The secondary story of Mel and Jack is both a nod to the readers of Out of Time and a sort of marker in the present to remind us that time is complicated.

Time is more complicated than it I ever thought it could be.

Here are some interesting numbers: 585 is the number of times the word ‘time’ is used in the body of the book. Surprisingly, the word ‘paradox’ is used only twice.

Just in Time, Pauline Baird Jones’ long awaited sequel to Out of Time contains the critical elements of a Jones book that I look for: an action-packed complex plot, engaging, smart characters and that signature sense of humor that I love.

Thanks to the author for providing a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

What a wonderful ride!

I fell in love with the first book in this series OUT OF TIME years ago! I was thrilled to learn this was the follow up. I highly suggest reading it before this book so younger a better understanding of the players and what's going on. Many levels of deception and adventure....a good old fashioned spy like read. We get to catch up with Mel and Jack in the secondary storyline, and they're helping our new main characters from afar. Who are their enemies and trying to mess with the timeline and Alice's test ride of her plane?.A fearless woman born far before her time. Her heart and mind more fitting of current times and not the era she wad born. Can she be saved, and discover who is working against her? A delightful, twisty, turny time travel read!!! I'm hoping we get another in this exciting series!!!!!

This is book two of the Out of Time Story series and sees Mel, Jack and Ty figuring out what to do in the present day, as they try to track a time anomaly in the past which is affecting the future. They are holed up in an old silo, in what they hope is a safe location, unaffected by any ripples in time. Mel and Jack met through a time travel adventure and they have already seen evidence of some other time travellers who have messed with time and the future, during WWII, even going as far as aiding the Nazis, and have been evident in time ripples in the Vietnam and Korean wars. Someone is tampering with time and affecting what is happening, now and in the future. Now they are tracking an incident in 1954, with an experimental new aircraft called the Manta Ray and its developer Dr Merriweather. There is limited information about the scientist and what happened. All they know is that the development of this radically different design somehow disappears from history, as do its designer and his daughter.

Ty volunteers to travel back in time to Edwards Air Force Base, or as it was known then, Meroc, as it would be too dangerous for Mel or Jack to tempt time again. Ty Granger is a military pilot and so is well qualified to find out about this new plane and even volunteer to test pilot it. He has to jump out of the back of a plane with no parachute, aiming for a small temporal vortex, just hanging in the sky. When he falls to the ground, he has to adjust to all the old world habits, scenery and even buildings. Everything takes some time to get used to and he has to be careful not to reveal his true identity, going by the name Tom and his fake identity papers, which will manage to get him on the base. He tries for a lift out towards the base and stops at a diner, where he ends up meeting Alice Merriweather, when she is dumped by the other women she travels into town with, as they meet up with some boyfriends. She ends up sat at the counter next to Ty and he recognises her name, when another man called Phillips tries to give her a lift back.

There is something not to be trusted with this man in black, as Ty calls him, and all the problems Alice and her father seem to have had with their design, has occurred since he arrived on the base. Alice has a bad feeling every time he appears, and he always seems to be following her! Ty offers to accompany Alice back in her friend’s car and after talking to him a bit, offers him the spare room in their bungalow on base. Alice wants to see her plane fly, but none of the test pilots so far, have been willing to even get into the plane. Ty quickly discovers the true dynamic of the father, daughter pairing, and realises that it is Alice not her father, who has designed and built the special engine that is the main part of the new planes design. Ty is desperate to find out more about it, but has to take matters slowly and not spook Alice too soon, nor reveal his true identity and where he comes from!

Ty begins to fall for this smart and beautiful woman, who is stymied by the time she has been born into, having no real qualifications having learnt from her mother before her death, and only somewhat from her father. The 1950’s are still a time where men disregard women having any sort of technical brains, seeing them only as sex objects and in jobs such as secretarial. She hardly speaks to her father at work, as there could be someone listening to them and since his wife’s death, he prefers to work without any music or distraction. Ty treats her as an equal and defers to her intelligence, while still being a gentleman all the time. She begins to show him her new flight suits and the training setup they have, as well as the plane cockpit as well. They end up with a sudden runway taxi date set, but someone is trying to sabotage the plane and doesn’t care if they kill whoever is on it at the time. Phillips turns up with someone he says will be a test pilot for her plane, but both are conveniently missing when the taxi test is carried out!

Alice and Ty must do all they can to get her plane and new engine design tested fully, without it being stolen by Phillips and whoever else is after it or wants it buried forever! Mel and Jack are tracking any news items or reports that are coming out about the plane and the Merriweathers. Looking for signs that Ty is getting his job done. He leaves secret recordings of any information he finds, for them to pick up in the future. He will automatically get pulled back to the present by a device planted under his skin and he even has a spy watch with cyanide, in case he gets caught. Alice finds out that she is not expected to live after the end of that week, and decides to assert herself a bit more and live her last few days, how she wants to! The story culminates as forces are attacking the silo Mel and Jack are based in, as well as Alice and Ty, trying to wipe them from existence, and in particular her design. Alice will be left to die in her time and Ty will be dragged back to the future, even though they love each other, it seems there is little they can do.

A great look at the past and how it could impact the future. The actions of even a few, can have a massive impact on what happens in the future. Whether Ty and Alice can have any future together is uncertain, as others start to close in. A really good read with the questions about time travel and how time can be affected by the actions of past, present and future, and all the quandaries this throws up by sending someone into the past and how any action they take can send ripples into the future. Even those left behind in the present can be affected by the actions in the past. Will they find out who is responsible for all these time anomalies, or not? An interesting read which brings with it even more questions for readers to ponder. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

She is not only a secretary. He’s not just any man

Can their future-past connection help to save them and other times and places from fates so much worse than death?

Clever and action packed

I haven't read a time travel story in a long time...until Ms. Jones' Out of Time (book 1). Then I had to read this story. At first, I thought it was going to be a completely different story with different characters. I was happy to see the main characters from Out of Time played a significant role in Just in Time.

Ty Granger goes back to 1954 to find the person (another time traveler) who wants to stop an advanced airplane. Alice Merriweather has been covering for her scientist father who's lost interest in the development of his airplane design. To the rest of the world, her design is unrecognized. Women have little control of their lives. Then, a new guy arrives who seems to admire and respect her. He immediately recognizes the design is hers, not her father's. Bit by bit, she begins to fall in love with him.

Ty hadn't jumped into a vortex to travel back in time to fall in love with anyone. What a complication! They both suspect a "man in black" (she doesn't get the implication) is the person trying to sabotage her airplane.

The roadblocks won't stop them. Ty and Alice seem so real, true to their decade. The setting (time and place) also seem real. Ms. Jones is a fantastic storyteller. Although both books are standalones, the door is open for another book in this series. Who is really trying to change the timeline? Is it the man-in-black or another?

Having just finished a truly filthy romance (loved it though), I was ready for something “sweet” without the saccharine, so I knew a Pauline Baird Jones would be perfect. Been a while since I read the first book, found this buried in the enormous pile that is my TBR. Glad I did because I remember really enjoying OUT OF TIME. Hope enough of it comes back to me that I’m not lost with this one. I did remember Mel and Jack, and it was great getting to spend time with them again. The story is interesting (as always with this author). I loved that the first thing Alice really noticed about Grayson was that he treated her with respect (and how uncommon that was for the time). Great romance! Excited to read the next one to see how this all turns out (the longer story arc, that is, the short one was tied up nicely--with excitement).

I really enjoyed book 1, so, when I saw there was a book 2 on Hoopla, I was very excited. Especially since Mel and Jack were in this one as well.
Too many holes and unanswered questions that I started searching to see if there was a book 3 that would help fill in some answers. Nope.
Very disappointing.

Time travel plus romance plus suspense! What more could you ask for?

This delightful sequel to Out of Time has the first book's star-crossed lovers in the present anxiously following the action in the past. (Frequently with romance series, you see little of previous couples in the next books. So, I really enjoyed seeing Jack & Melanie again!)

Just In Time protagonist Ty Granger jumps back to Edwards Air Force Base (still more commonly known as Muroc to locals) to try to thwart "time tamperers" who wanted to squelch the development of a plane ahead of its time. His mission is to save this airplane from being lost to history. He finds out after he gets to Muroc that his chief goal has now become saving the radical plane's inventor!

Highly recommended for those who enjoy a good love story, time travel, and the suspense involved in trying to stay one jump ahead of their time tampering-foes (SOMEBODY is trying to stop them but it is unclear exactly who is friend or foe), etc.

Excellent Time Travel Story.

This continues the story from the first book. A pilot is sent to the past to investigate a plane and engine that is futuristic. While in the past, the 1950s, he meets the plane and engine engineer who happens to be a woman. History tells that she dies, but does she? Very good story and as exciting as the first book.
