Great Houses of the Hudson River

Rate this book
The great estates of the Hudson River Valley offer some of the finest examples of grand-scale nineteenth-century American architecture and landscape design. The houses, built by the leading architects of the day, were country retreats for America's most illustrious families. With glorious river views, and grounds that sprawl over hundreds of acres, most of the estates are open to the public and have become popular tourist attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. An introduction by architect and historian Michael Dwyer provides insight into the beauty and importance of the houses.

Wonderful photos of fabulous great houses along the Hudson, mostly rich people, some colonial houses. Each house is covered with its history, its family and lovely photos, some outside, some aerial by Steve Turner, some interiors. Most grand that few could afford, like the Vanderbilt Mansion, some cozy interiors that I could live in. Wonderful preparation for traveling to this area for anybody interested in architecture or interior design, as well as history.
Highly recommended as a good start in reading about this area where the wealthy concentrated their big country houses. It makes me want to go see them in person.
