He’s a straight-laced type A with a by-the-book attitude. She’s never followed a rule a day in her life. It’s true opposites attract, but sometimes the consequences can be deadly.
Shawn keeps everyone on Team Rogue in line. Organized. He thrives on order. Lives and breathes rules, expectations, and schedules. But the tornado of a woman he picked up in Ohio threatens all those things. Heidi Rucker does more than turn his life upside down. She spins it on its head, making him fight to keep his bearings. The woman is unruly. Unmanageable. Rowdy. Perfect. But bringing her to Alaska might have been a mistake. One that could cost Shawn something he never realized he needed. **** From the minute she spotted him, Heidi knew she wanted Shawn Greer. The tactical gear. The beard. The scowl he usually wore. He was freaking irresistible. But there was more to Shawn than she expected. Turns out the man wasn’t just a pretty face attached to a ridiculous body. His intensity is addicting. His focus intimidating. Being with someone like him would take commitment. Dedication. And neither of those have ever been her strong suits. Heidi’s never been a long-term girl, let alone the forever type, but there’s a first time for everything. Unless her forever gets cuts short.
What is going on with this series of books…? Each book, as it is released, seems to be slipping. I think it’s because of the unnecessarily complicated plotlines and characters coming and going. You really do need a scorecard to keep up, but unfortunately, the books do not hold enough interest to create one.
It all started with a short story (39 pages) serving as a prequel to Loss Recovery called Collateral Damage and it was a tasty tease marked as #0.5 of a 7-book series called Alaskan Security – Team Rogue. It was the story of Bess (calling herself Carly Smith) and Wade (calling himself Whitt Daniels) when they met in Wayfield, OR for a one night stand that kicked off the series and I’ll bet dollars to donuts that the overly complicated plotlines were not under consideration when this short story was written. I gave it a 4-star rating (actually, I gave it a well-earned 4½ star rating but couldn’t, quite, round up to 5-stars).
Next came Loss Recovery, book #1 of the Alaskan Security – Team Rogue series of 7 books. We meet the real Whitt Daniels who is actually Wade Denison, a member of Team Rogue and the real Carly Smith who is actually Bess Daniels, running away (with her son, Parker) from her deadly ex-boyfriend, Chris Snyder. We also meet other Team members; according to Wade, there are 10 men on his team. We also meet Harlow Mowry who has been flown in from New York to help Dutch (a Team Rogue member) with cyber technology. I gave this book a 4-star rating. The story was well paced, although a bit overwhelming because we were introduced to many secondary characters with little background. Unbelievability factor: High. Bess was with Chris Snyder for five years and in all that time, never saw his evil? Bess is smart, clever, sees through Wade’s walls after knowing him for mere days and she never saw what Chris was like? Doubtful.
The second book in the Team Rogue series is Counterfeit Relations. This is the story of Brock Cassidy (of Rogue Team) and Eva Tatum, CEO of Investigative Resources, with co-owners, Mona and Chandler, from Cincinnati, Ohio. Eva is being threatened by a man, Howard Richards (aka Mike Nestor) a would-be stalker and former employee. Rogue Team members are reintroduced to the reader. In this book it’s finally mentioned that someone is out to take down Alaskan Security; here begins the immensely convoluted plots and storylines. The writer at the end of the book apologizes for leaving so many loose ends untied but insists there was no way around it. Piffle! There most certainly was a way around it. By this 4th book, Guerrilla Tactics, we find out who the guys in black are and we did not need two books ahead of it to put that together. Is this a ploy to sell more books? I don’t know….
Enemy Territory is the third book and it earned a 3-star rating. These books are slipping in content, character steadfastness, and style. This time out, it’s Harlow Mowry, hacker extraordinaire at Alaskan Security, who is being hunted by her ex-husband Tod Talbot (who is also a hacker), and Dutch Mackey, the initial technology guru before Harlow came on board, who fall in love. All the Alaskan Security team books have angst cranked up way too high and this one is the highest, so far and it’s getting worse.
Guerrilla Tactics, then, is the fourth book of the Alaskan Security – Rogue Team series. I found myself wondering why I was reading it. Heidi is a caricature of herself: she is far too over the top in her desire for involving herself only in one-night stands. Shawn has never shown even a hint of his true nature in previous books. He’s been organized, sometimes funny, and an important member of the team. Here, he is an abusive jerk with a sad background to offer justification for his unjustifiable behaviors.
Heidi is far too anxiety-ridden ALL the time, just like the women in previous books (its becoming its own miserable trope). The background of each woman is remarkably similar: unremitting exes that stalk them and must be taken out.
This time, it’s the taciturn Rogue Team member Shawn Greer who’s finding a love interest in Heidi Rucker, a new hire from Eva’s old corporation, Investigative Resources, introduced in the second book in the series, Counterfeit Relations. Heidi breaks the lady-mold as a (beautiful, of course) hacker who’s always loved her computers more than the boys. It’s Shawn with a haunting ex who has the trust issues this time…although Heidi is scarred from past experience and has walls reminiscent of Harlow’s in the previous book.
Heidi is as intimidating as Harlow. Both are strong female leads. They are part of Team Intel, composed of only women (Harlow, Eva, Mona and now Heidi) with ninja cyber skills. Together, they have their hands full and they are constantly being pushed, pulled, and prodded away from one task after another until it’s all a chaotic mess. Dutch’s hacker skills appear to have been ignored, forgotten, lost or strayed. He was good in the first book and his abilities seem to dwindle with each successive book.
Guerrilla Tactics tries too hard. It tries suspense. It tries romance. It tries sex. It tries humor. It succeeds about half the time. The women get together and talk. Then the guys get together and talk. Sometimes the two groups communicate, sometimes they just run around halls, tunnels, the kitchen, each others’ rooms. The teasing, the game playing should be deliciously erotic, but they are not. They are tiresome, tedious, perfunctory. It started out well and couldn’t keep going. I think the story is just too “all over the place.”
The writer has thought-provoking characters; much of the time there’s snappy dialog that is fun and makes sense. But the plotting, the storyline, the deliberate playing out of the plot gets so old. The characters and the plot do not gel. The characters get in the way of the unnecessarily convoluted plot lines and they seem to have been developed just to keep us from realizing how agonizingly slow the story is plodding along. It’s as if the characters are a rich, tasty gravy that overwhelms the meat and makes the meal somehow less substantial.
Poor Pierce is once again subjected to name typos; as in the previous book, he becomes “Piece” again as in “Piece is concerned Harlow might struggle….” Maybe “Pierce” is tough to type?
This.Story.Just.Will.Not.End. I get that the writer is stringing us along. I get that she appears to have a case of the cutes. But enough is enough. I like most of the 20+ characters and I’m bummed that we do not see more of Wade and Bess who have conveniently gone off to Florida, only to return with Wade’s mother, aka the chief babysitter. We see Brock because Eva is part of the Intel Team, but it would be fun to see them interact in a human way…maybe see how they support each other in all the frenzied activity.
The writer is off the mark with Heidi and Shawn. They are “off” as a couple, perhaps because they are “off” as solo individuals as well. Their issues are deep and Shawn is not a sympathetic character. Heidi is at times unfeeling, antagonistic even. At other times she emits a depth of understanding and shows herself to be both likeable and sensitive. Shawn is disconnected, separated perhaps by his abusive conduct. His rough viciousness is inexcusable, regardless of having a horrible ex. Heidi and Shawn have issues far too serious to be handled with such offhanded awkwardness. Their relationship did not have to be this unpleasant and nasty.
Shawn is not the only Rogue Team member to be placed in an unpleasant light. Pierce is no longer forthcoming – he’s always been secretive, but now he seems deceitful, cunning and untrustworthy, even. The way he treats Mona is despicable and certainly appalling.
I rounded up from a 2 ½ star rating and gave this book 3-stars, but came close to rounding down to 2-stars. The writer’s style remains crisp and easy to read and that’s why I rounded up. These two characters, Heidi and Shawn, did not do justice to the series. The plots and storylines remain convoluted and needlessly complicated. We now see who has been behind the scheme to take down Alaskan Security. It’s a neat bundle of folks, some old from previous books, some hinted at previously, and some new. It’s a twisted up hodge podge.
I am going to read the 5th book, but not immediately; I need to take a little break and read other writers and genres. I hope, sincerely, that the 5th book will offer some respite from the drawn-out turmoil of the first four books. There are 7 books in this series: I really hope these disheartening plotlines are tied up soon so we can move on and see this Team evolve into a well-meshed band of talented individuals who learn to rely on and work well with one another to solve some worthwhile problems. We’ll see….
Oooh... the intensity of this storyline kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!
Between the old dangers to the Alaskan Security operations, and now the unraveling of the lies kept about Shadow, Zeke, and GHOST, I could not stop reading.
Heidi is a fantastic character and I enjoy her "live out loud" way of life. She set her sights on Shane, and that was it. They are great together and their sizzling chemistry is fun!
I cannot WAIT for more of this storyline! Very entertaining and addictive, I highly recommend binge reading this series. It's soo good.
Wow Alaskan Security-team books just keep getting better and better! Shawn and Heidi are such opposites but it works, there is danger and passion, deception, and distractions for them both, it gets 5 stars because it has interesting and varied characters and a really good storyline.
This series has got a bit frustrating. This book does give some answers, but they are so slow coming. It definitely keeps you in suspense.
I didn't initially warm to Heidi and not much to Shawn. They grew on me as the book went on, but I am really just waiting for Pierce and Mona.
I know the next book should give a load of answers and I feel like I need it as I have hung in this far!
It is a fun series, and it's definitely held my interest, but something about this book didn't match up to Dutch and Harlow. Also, I thought Harlow was meant to be the best hacker, but this book made Heidi out to be far more essential than Harlow. It doesn't quite feel consistent.
Little did I know when I started reading this book that Shawn and Heidi would tie for my favorite couple with Eva and Brock. There is something about all these characters that I love. Of course, the storyline doesn’t hurt either.
Heidi Rucker has worked for Eva and Mona at Investigative Services for some time. However, with things changing and someone after her friends, she goes and helps Alaskan Security. Little did she know she was going to find a super hunk and have him deny her repeatedly. However, Heidi doesn’t know when to quit and has no plans to back down from getting Shawn.
Shawn Greer was destroyed by the last woman he dated, and while Heidi intrigues him, he also can’t let himself slip. He hopes if he does fall that he may be able to recover.
I love this book and was able to get so many answers to the pile of questions that were stacking up. Heidi is something else, and I completely understand the love for joggers! Though I would make a horrible hacker. Shawn is a hunk of burning love, and he can boss me around anytime he wants. I don’t think I would call him Kitten, but maybe something else. I highly recommend you read this book; however, you will need to read them in order. This book is not standalone, and you will be confused if you haven’t read the others.
Hmmm, for me this was my least favorite. I Prefer the man to pursue the woman and Heidi was a bit too forward and brass. Shawn was being a jerk and she kept throwing herself at him. I unfortunately didn’t like the heroine much. She annoyed me with her OTT comments, she came across childish, loud and obnoxious for most of the books. She did become a bit better toward the end though. The romance was a bit less in this one because of a lack of chemistry for me, but it was definitely spicier than the previous one. So we did get that :-) loved ‘seeing the rest of the gang again and so happy we will finally get Mona and Pierce’s story now!!
Safety: OW: H was in love before h with OW. He says things like: I loved her very much, she was my whole world, I was all in with her, she was all I wanted, she was all that made me happy”. Call me a hypocrite but I just don’t like the men in my books saying that about anybody else but the h. The OW cheated on him and he still has trust issues (that he manifests on the current h) because of it. The OW is only mentioned, not actually present in the book. OM: h has slept with a guy that was just hired by AS. Was before MC’s met though. It does make H jealous. No cheating No separation / no third act break up
I gave this book 1 star because you have to choose a rating, but I can't accurately review this book since I had to stop reading it. I found it to be highly triggering for sexual or domestic abuse survivors. And when I went back to see if I missed a trigger warning in the summary that would've spared me a sleepless night, I decided to leave this review because I didn't find a warning. What I did find were a disturbing number of 4 and 5 star reviews and praise for Shawn specifically. Being controlled by someone is not sexy or fun, and allowing anyone to hit you anywhere, let alone someone who clearly enjoys it, is a huge red flag on both sides. I'm done with the series now because I don't want to read yet another author try to normalize abusive behavior and its acceptance, when it really needs to be examined at length inside a psychologist's office. I also find the placement of this book in the series to be really odd considering the last one had Harlow - and Dutch because he loves her - struggling with the aftereffects of her controlling and abusive ex.
This series is off the charts! The complexity of the ongoing story is something else. I absolutely HATE "to be continued" books, but this author has me loving it! The story is way to much to have put into one book. I'm totally in awe of how she has worked this out across four books.
Shawn's issues ended up being less serious than I imagined, but it was still a serious problem for him. The way Ms. Westbrook wrote it was so thoughtful. He had been through something that wasn't like what Dutch has been through, but he was seriously affected. An excellent point that we can't compare personal tragedies and we are all affected in different ways by the things that happen to us. Shawn and Heidi were a good fit because she was so strong and stubborn, which wouldn't seem like the best fit for someone with his demons.
I am so excited about the resolution in Pierce's book!
4.5 stars. Heidi made clear from jump she's down for no strings attached sex with Shawn. It's just how she rolls. Shawn pretends he's not attracted to her and tries everything from ignoring her to scaring her off. Turns out she's more than a match for him. When he finally gives in to what they both want, he discovers fun Heidi is the partner he never wanted who can go the distance and deal with his emotional baggage. I like that in this series the men have hangups that the strong women in this series support but aren't perfect and don't take shit from these alpha males. Also finally, finally we get some answers about who's hunting Alaska Security and the women of intel. As always, the heat between Shawn and Heidi puts global warming to shame.
This book along with the first 3 have been exciting. Each one makes me glad I am reading them in order. Shawn is a control freak and Heidi scares him to death even though he has the hots for her. He hides his true feelings and insecurities behind his position as leader of Team Rogue, and Heidi hides her own baggage by focusing on her hacking skills and unattached hookups. They both know they what something from the other, but it takes a bit of time to realized its the same thing. No judgement or pressure from the other, just acceptence of who they both are. Together they both end up learning the truth about GHOST and Shadow, as well as Zeke's part in all this when they are taken from Alaskan Securities facility. This outcome now takes them a bit closer to learning who is after them. That last interaction between them and Zeke was interesting. Hope to see Zeke's story emerge from this series.
As the team digs deeper to find out who’s trying to put them out of business, Zeke is more secretive of his Shadow team much to the rest of the office’s annoyance and Heidi finally gets what she didn’t even know she wanted with as Shawn stands long enough to let himself get caught.
Shepherd Security is in disarray as their mystery nemesis seems to draw closer and the team continues to be a step ahead of them. Also a secret group with as many assets as Shepherd has infiltrated the team causing the close knit group to be suspicious of each other.
This outing’s leads weren’t favorites of this reader and seemed more erotica than suspense, giving it a filler feel. Also, the ending was the most cliffhanger-ish than previous outings. Rating: 3stars
Didn’t like Shawn, Hero, didn’t like Heidi, the heroine Pretty sure it’s how he’s an assho with Mona and because she’s too pushy and loudy… I’m not sure if I will continue with the series after Pierce’s and Mona book, the series is good but a little claustrophobic and complicated for my spanish brain!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is Shawn and Heidis story. This is the fourth book in the series and you need to read them in order. In this book, we get to meet Heidi ( the super hacker) and Shawn ( the uptight control freak). There are fireworks between the two, Shawn has been hurt badly and doesn’t believe he’s worthy and Heidi knows what she wants but has never been in a relationship. The story starts with Harlow almost dying and the team are trying to find out what happens. I can’t say too much without giving spoilers but the series is ready for an explosive conclusion with Mona and pierces story next and I can’t wait. The series just gets better and better.
I think Shawn is my new favorite guy. 🔥❤️ Heidi rubbed me wrong from the first time we met her, with her abrasiveness and willingness to “bed hop”, I felt like she didn’t really care WHO she slept with, just that she did. But as the story went on, she seemed to open up and become more approachable, more likable. I’m still not her #1 fan, but she quickly discovered what Shawn needed and willingly gave it to him. I liked that ALOT. As for the story itself, the advancements in the storyline were exciting and a bit unexpected, definitely keeping me entertained and interested. CANT WAIT FOR PIERCE!
As far as couples go, this wasn’t my favorite. I don’t know what type of trope this one would be considered but I didn’t like at first. Maybe it’s because I had a hard time connecting with Heidi. I was going to give this 3 stars but toward the end I started to like Shawn & Heidi together a little more. I mainly kept reading because it’s important to the series and I think there’s a huge turning point in the series in this book. At least I hope so. I’m not saying the book is horrible. It’s far from it. For some reason I just couldn’t connect with Heidi for most of the book. This could very well be a 5 star for others.
Omg! I can’t wait for the next book. This was exciting and I like how much hotter it got. Shawn & Heidi has such great chemistry. Heidi is very cool & “gets” Shawn. I enjoyed seeing how their relationship developed. I’m usually not a fan of drawn out mystery spanning over several books but this author does a great job of keeping me engaged & intrigued & guessing every step of the way. It feels fresh even by the 4th book. I’m a little sad to see the mystery wrapping up in the next book but excited to read about Pierce & see how the mystery gets resolved.
Great heroine - a plus-size, brainy super-hacker who goes after the man she wants, but the man she wants is an inarticulate, bossy guy who doesn't kiss until after he's shoved his hands down her pants several times. And he's always in charge in the bedroom, he announces. This, and pinching and smacking sensitive areas is supposed to turn her on. He becomes less dominant as they become close, but his early behavior would be a giant red flag for most smart, unsubmissive women.
Love this series and the characters. Definitely keeps you on your toes with following the story line and the who did what...like you're helping them sort through the facts. Love the characters and their stories. I enjoy the strong women and the strong, protective men. I'm hoping there are much more stories for each especially Zeke. The way he was portrayed in this book was great, from training Mona and then being part of Ghost. Can't wait to see if he gets his own story.
This series just keeps me wanting more. I’m really enjoying how each character gets their own turn, but the story in the background (which really isn’t all that far into the background) carries really well through each book.
You probably could read one in the middle and get by, but it will be so much more enjoyable to start from the beginning of the series.
Heidi is a whirlwind - and just a tad batty. But lovably so. Shawn is Mr Straight&narrow & doesn’t know how to deal with her. But once they find their mojo, they’re great together.
A girl knows what a girl wants. Another steamy alpha male meets his sassy-snarky match. Heidi and Shawn’s chemistry is off the hook. This series gets hotter and more dangerous with each new story, the mystery twists and just when you think you have it figured out, there is another turn! Jemma Westbrook/Janice Whiteaker continues to strike a perfect balance between bossy alpha males and super smart, sexy, competent women, creating couples who work best when they work together.
I loved this one! Heidi has chased Shawn since she first set eyes on him and Shawn has run as fast as he can to avoid Heidi. We’ll Shawn stumbles and Heidi pounces and is very surprised at the dominant kinky man she is faced with. There is danger everywhere and no one knows who they can trust. We’ll the girl squad knows they are trustworthy and their men but the rest is up for grab. This book is action packed, suspenseful and super steamy and hard to put down. I’m loving this series!
Two characters whose unique talents are integral to Alaskan Security must find a balance between desire and trust. Shane's no nonsense work ethic clashes with Heidi's sassy sexy genius. It takes a threat to all of Alaskan Security to bring these two to a deep understanding of who they are to each other. There are moments where the reader is tantalized with hints of who or what is trying to bring Alaskan Security to its knees. So so good!
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book and it didn’t disappoint. It was non stop drama, suspense and snark! It was amazing. It’s one of these series that once you start you want to keep going. This book was so good. It answered some awkward but very important questions we’ve all had for a while now. It was definitely not quite what I was expecting, it was even better. The plot and over story arc is quite brilliant and compelling. I cannot wait for Pierce’s book now.
What can I say about this book? Every time I think I can’t love one of the characters more than the others I do. I can say without a doubt that Shawn and Heidi are by far my favorite characters. I couldn’t stop laughing at the things she’s say to tick him off but when he took control OMG!!! And I’m pretty pissed I have to wait until December to finally find out what’s going on at Alaskan Security!! But every book gets better; you get all the feels and begging for more!!
I absolutely loved LOVED this book. Not sure if this is a spoiler. The chemistry between Shawn and Heidi is nothing but explosive those two just naturally work together and I have chills of happiness for them both. I would love to see a wedding for all the guys and gals but I’m probably pushing that limit. I’m totally in love with Shawn. Thank you Janice for this book and series. I now want the paper books. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
But I was born in the wrong decade! I am loving this series! I cannot remember how I got hooked on this author but she is a new favorite. I will also be looking at the books she wrote under another name that she mentions at the end of this story. I know Pierce's story is next but not until December - can't wait for that one. I certainly hope Zeke gets a story??? What do you think Jemma?
She's the hacker that finds all the secrets and she's been after Shawn since he picked her up in the Company jet, he's the leader of Rogue Team and isn't make her pursuit easy because his last relationship left him numb because the woman cheated on him then left him. I would recommend this book and series for mature readers only (sexual content)
I’m not a fan of Dom/sub play or push pull relationship stuff, but I am a fan of this book, so many things that normally turn me off in a book has the complete opposite affect in this one. The reason is Heidi, she’s so out there, so completely real and doesn’t let anything or anyone dim her glorious light even a little that I can completely understand Shawn’s dilemma, and I love that Heidi gets him too. I really can’t wait for the next one!
Jemma Westbrook has made women in action/suspense an indispensable commodity and their presence a twister that picks you up and drops you where you least expect to land. To say Heidi resembles this force of nature would seriously understate her impact and Shawn is directly in her path. Action, suspense, danger and sizzling attraction are all front and centre in this fast-paced and enthralling story. Bring on book five!
