This is the second book I have picked up from the author and I found this book to be good with some nice information. The pictures included with the instructions on how to draw certain things were helpful, at least for someone that does not draw and has an issue with figuring out how to do depth in pictures. Some of these things I would need a bit of practice to do but on the whole I understood the steps and how to get to the finished picture.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
Very simple book. Lots of easy steps to follow without words. The drawing actually speaks for itself. Found it best in iPad and phone since a few were in color but the majority are in black and white worked for my Kindle.
Keep going and teaching even more! This is an excellent starter book. I hope Sophia will write another book that extends to even a higher level of drawing illusions. I'm ready to learn more.
Not happy with this. Some very basic info for HS-level student artists. Minimal presentation—looks like it could have been poorly copied from an old library book or something. Bummer.
This book helps those of us who pencil or draw objects to & on watercolor paper or various canvas..Great new drawing techniques plus examples to learn from.
I love the idea of this book, showing and telling the different steps needed to create 3D drawings and optical illusions. Unfortunately, the execution wasn't the best it could be. Perhaps the most problematic is that the photos that go along with each drawing are of pretty bad quality. Most show the flash of the bulb reflecting on the surface that the paper is on. Some photos are very dark, and most are dark to some extent. Others have strange lighting that makes it hard to see what you are supposed to draw. I think the author perhaps could have scanned most of these and gotten better quality. There are also some issues with the few words that are in this book. My guess is that the author is not a native English speaker, which is fine, but some phrases and sentences are a little awkward, particularly in the introduction and here and there in the descriptions of the steps for the drawings. If you can actually follow along drawing these 3D items and optical illusions, they're actually pretty cool and certainly impressive looking. You'll learn how to draw 3D hearts, letters, and other shapes as well as optical illusions. I particularly like the letter M that appears to be peeling off the page and the two hearts (one 3D and one optical illusion). If you want to try your hand at drawing these things, I suggest you check out the Look Inside at Amazon to make sure that the photos will work for you. I found them a little frustrating, but I did like the results.
1 star taken off for the writing & 2 stars taken off for the photographs
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I think the author of this book—and I have reviewed several of hers—has good intentions, wanting to teach how to make 3D drawings and other optical illusions. However, her execution is just poor. One issue is the text. All the writing is unclear or awkward to parse, the introductory material and the step-by-step instructions. Some directions of how to draw each item don't really make sense. In others, she seems to have missed crucial steps of the drawing process, making too big of leaps between stages. But the worst aspect of this book is the pictures of each step. Many were clearly photographed in low-light situations, making the photos hard to make out. Some early sketches of the illusions are actually impossible to see. That, combined with the poor directions, makes the ultimate success of the readers’ drawings dicey at best. In the introduction, the author actually states that people with no drawing skills can do these 3D drawings or optical illusions. Given the poor state of the photos and directions, I think anyone would struggle, but certainly someone with no drawing skills whatsoever—like me—would find the directions too scant and the photos too hard to replicate because of poor quality and the complexity of some. All in all, I think this is a frustrating book whether you are a talented artist or a mediocre one.

This is not a very long book and the instructions are very brief. The first few examples have instructions, but the second half only have line drawings and they don’t seem to be in any particular order, as different lines are drawn in. You have to look at them quite a few times to work out how to draw them and colour some of them in properly. It might have helped if the photographs of the paper were of a better quality, as the supposed white paper I presume was used for the pieces, was very dark and almost grey. Almost as if they were taken with a mobile phone and without any sort of lighting to show the line drawings properly.
I really wanted to like this book, as I wanted to use some optical illusions on a piece of work I was going to make, using paint, but the quality of the Images was disappointing and it really needed some more instructions, especially if it is aimed at children, as well as others. There should really have been a lot more of it as well, if this is meant as a serious endeavour. I give it two stars for the examples, but couldn’t mark it any higher due to the quality issues. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
As someone who cannot really draw, well I sort of can do flowers and I am great with stick people, this was a good book. The pictures that are included with each step are very helpful. I am not really great but with some practice and applying the same techniques I think I can do a few fun things.
I would recommend this book if you want to learn to draw in perspective.
Quite fun but early stage illustrations are very bad and unclear like under exposed photos, even on an iPad. For that reason I’ve marked it down. It does give you step by step instructions for a few illusions
