Abomination. The word follows Katyia Dragonovich, bastard daughter of the Regent of Sector Three. After being turned over to the Vampire clan by the only mother she has ever known, Katyia swears vengeance. Although terrified, she boldly faces her new future, even if it’s an uncertain one with a man who is as cold as the mountain’s ice caps. When the Vampire clan discovers one of their new turns has been infected with ravager blood, they rally for her extermination. They cannot allow anything carrying the mark of the monstrous creatures that have overrun their world to live among them. But Roman Stratcovich, rightful king of the Vampire clans, has other plans. This hybrid woman—part witch, part vampire, part ravager—may be the secret to gaining what he’s lost. More than that, however, she’s also the key to unlocking his cold heart. The question is, does he want her to?
So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.
Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.
Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.
I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.
"Her entire being came into sharp focus - the witch, the vampire, and the ravager. They merged, melted into one creature."
In one horrific instant, betrayed and abused Katyia becomes a hybrid, an abomination and a feared creature.
Set in the dystopic future of the Othala witches, who protect isolated sectors against mutated ravagers, winter is approaching in post-apocalyptic Russia, where vampire and humans have an uneasy alliance to combat the ravagers. Katyia is the illegitimate daughter of Sector Three's Regent, and for self-preservation she has found it necessary to downplay her magical talent. Since the magical boundary protection is slowly failing, the Regent has turned to vampire mercenaries for reinforcement. Part of the deal is to provide humans for blood sustenance and potential turning.
Treachery lands Katyia in the vampire camp, where her turning is hampered by a ravager attack. Vampire chieftain Roman, already impressed with the bravery and talent of Katyia, takes her under his wing to protect and mentor. He also has an uncommon attraction to the black-haired beauty.
Compared to the two previous Othala Witch Collection books, Hybrid exhibits more emotion and connection between the lead characters. At the beginning, I feel sympathy for Katyia, but by the end I feel fear. She becomes an utterly ruthless and deadly character, tied by the thinnest of threads to her humanity. Luckily she has Roman to ground her and show her the love that will always bring her back from her beastly sides.
"With Roman, all her inhibitions melted away and she stood toe to toe with him." The vampire Chieftain is an interesting character. At first he sees only the advantages of Katyia's hybrid state, but slowly, as he teaches her about her vampire side, exposes the ravager side and explores the witch side, he only sees her vulnerability. These two find a center in each other, and Roman eventually gives a litany of vows that rival the most romantic passages.
Betrayal and vengeance moves the plot in this novel. Roman and Katyia have both been betrayed by family and their unique savagery make them formidable as they seek revenge. The ravagers play a lesser but violent role as both threat and opportunity. The beast within Katyia is only leashed by love. 4.5 stars.
I loved the concept of the book. It was completely new something i haven't read before. Which is hard to do since I'm an avid reader. This book was written about things that have been done over and over. Vampires, witches, love, forgiveness, pain but i can honestly say it is a one of a kind. I only gave three stars because of its simplicity but that will be good for a younger reader. I would recommend it.
I really enjoyed this book, because it wasn't your typical vampire book. I read this book with in hours of receiving it, because I couldn't put it down I had to know what happened next. If you are into supernatural you will love this book! I loved that the lead female character was a strong independent women even with all she had gone through!! Must read!!
Apryl Baker did a fantastic job with this story. I love stories that offer developed characters and believeable premises. Ok, we are dealing with vampires, ravagers, and witches but the jealousy of Katya's stepmother and ineffectualness of her father are very believeable. This is a pretty fast moving story and well worth the read. I look forward to more books in the story!
I really enjoyed reading this book! It was all the paranormal elements I love reading about, vampires, witches, and monsters galore! I was well written and had a really engaging storyline. I can't wait to read the other books in this collection.
I am not a huge fan of books about shifters and vampires. That said, I live Apryl’s books so I wanted to give it a shot. It did not disappoint. I enjoyed the female lead’s strength and sass as much as I enjoyed the strength and dominance from Roman.
I read this book simply because it was written by Apryl Baker. Once again I'm glad i chose to read it and struggled to put it down. I would definitely recommend this book to read!
Really liked this one. Easy to read and relate to the characters. What I really liked is that the villain actually had a personal vendetta against the heroine and that the oppression that resulted was actually personal. No vague lust for power, this had a definite cause and effect for the main character it also ultimately would have doomed the whole section. I loved the concept of the main character becoming more powerful with her transformation and that she has support to handle the challenges ahead. The only real drawback was a section that involved some serious repetition. We only were told that vampires aren't affected by cold the same way 3 different times in the same chapter. I do wish the story had been longer and more detailed but overall it was a nice, easy read.
At the start of the book we are introduced to Katyia's step mother who to put it bluntly is a vicious horrid human being! we come to understand the unfortunate life of katyia. Without giving to much away she has had a life of abuse, heart ache, loss, trauma and betrayal and I found myself naturally feeling sorry for her. Katyia undergoes a change unlike any other and becomes a hybrid a being that is part of all 3. We are introduced to Roman briefly when katyia is attached and then later when she is given to him. He's alpha male and all you will be mine. To be honest I would of liked more without giving to much away this book had the potential to be amazing rather than just good but at 140 pages the likelihood of that is rather slim its not the type of story that should of been rushed which is how it felt. Its an okay read and I would suggest reading it for a quick read but unfortunately it left me feeling frustrated and with so many question. Did the camp except Katyia? What happened with there mate bind? Did it strengthen! What about the human feeders? Did the vampires and feeders live in harmony? Did they move back to Romans home land? What happened to Katyia's home town? It was hinted at the very end but did they actually go? What about Katyia's powers did they remain as powerful once the change was complete? There are so many more questions! Maybe there will be another book? However if not I wouldn't recommend reading it to be honest there are just to many questions left unanswered that will drive you crazy! The romance between Katyia and Roman was good although if it wasn't so rushed it could of been better. One minute she thinks she likes him and the next minute she's in love with him and has decided to accept him has her mate. It was all very rushed he was avoiding her and then he's in love with her and then back to avoiding her and then he bites her and she's his mate it was rushed this all happened at once. There wasn't any structure! It was just rushed it has potential but it wasn't fabulous
Another excellent addition to the Othala Witches Collection!
Apryl Baker spins an original tale into SECTOR THREE, of Katyia, the illegitimate daughter of its Regent. She's despised and beaten by her stepmother, Olivia. The magic is failing, yet Katyia is the only one of her siblings who can see or feel it. Olivia is so blinded by her hatred, she'll do anything to cast Katyia out in order to ascend her daughter Nicollette into the seat of the next Regent. When the opportunity arises, she does exactly that. Katyia experiences a number of changes, each making her stronger. She meets Roman, who's hell bent on protecting her. What does this new life mean? She learns quickly what her newfound destiny will be. Does she embrace it along with what she's become or will she allow her innermost demons consume her? How will she protect her people if the wards fail? Decisions, decisions. Does she allow herself to love again after so much betrayal? This is one of my favorite books in the Othala Witches Collection. You definitely won't be disappointed! It's a must-read!
Katyia was the regents daughter, but didn't realize how much danger that out her in. Until the awful night her "mother" threw her into the hands of the monsters, they brought her into their clan as one of them, but with a bit more. Will Roman get his revenge through this new addition, or will she be his undoing? Will Katyia get her family back or will revenge cloud her judgements? And what is happening to her that no one saw coming? Such a good book. I have fallen in love with this series, and this just added yet another great book.
A fun short story - part of many by different authors in the same vein (forgive the pun!) with Vampires and humans fighting a battle against 'Ravagers' and sometimes each other! Each story is set in a different 'sector' protected by magic against the Ravagers. Katyia's and Roman's story is a very good one and their 'battles' fun!! Apryl Baker weaves words so well you can just 'see' what is happening - I will be looking for more work by this author as well as the rest of the stories of each 'sector'!
Oh, yes, this is truly the kind of series I am constantly looking for. The first book on Sector One set me on the path to acquiring the rest of the series. Oh my, Sector Three is so exciting! Katyia's story is thrilling, full of magic and mystery, death and destruction and painful betrayal, but also so sweet and sexy and full of love, of family, of friends and fellow countrymen, of a mate found, of acceptance of new powers. Love it! Any hope for a sequel?
I absolutely loved this story by Apryl Baker. I couldn't put it down and did not want it to end. The characters and the world drew me in and left me wanting more. Apryl Bakers writing never ceases to amaze me.
