Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn’t think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition.

He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art and then set up home in London. Axel illustrated a number of books for various publishers, and in 1993 Kate suggested him as the illustrator for Julia Donaldson’s first picture book text, A Squash and a Squeeze. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership: their bestselling modern classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over three-and-a-half million copies worldwide, and the TV animation was broadcast on Christmas day 2009.

Axel has illustrated a number of other highly successful books, including Muddle Farm, and his books have been translated into 42 languages.

Axel lives in London with his partner and young daughter.

When I bought this I did not realise that some time ago I had read the books in the series in a boxed set. But the great illustrations by Axel Scheffler made it one to read again.

Freddy has googly eyes and loves catching flies. He leaps and jumps around and has such fun squelching in muddy green slime ugh!). And he encourages his friends to join him and they have great fun.

Freddy then has a sleep but wakes up when night falls and with the stars out and the moon bright, he croaks throughout the night - something he likes best of all!

This books describes all the fun activities that Freddy the Frog likes to do during his day. Also, this book is a way to gently introduce rhyming rhythms. To keep kids entertained, there are also pull tabs that advance the story.

This book uses good alliteration which can be helpful for children that are struggle with pronunciation. On top of that this book is interactive and can be more engaging for children.

Axel Scheffler is the illustrator of the Gruffalo books. We all know what acclaim those are meeting with ;)
This book is well liked by BooBoo. But it may be because it is a bath-time book. It also makes a little squeaky sound when squeezed. So, this book has a lot of advantages for a child. Oddly enough, even with the bells and whistles it is the language of the book our child responds to. The words "flippity flap" (sorry is this a plot spoiler?) are something that our child is fixated with.

We have the squishy bath book version. Most of the rhymes have a great flow. My son seems to like it and enjoys the squeak.
