Be careful what you wish for…

Kate Golden is living the dream in Lake Cloverleaf—a handsome husband, three wonderful kids, and a career she loves. As a motivational speaker, she devotes her time to helping people achieve their goals, to become the best versions of themselves.

Apparently, the best version of Kate now includes being a witch.

Of course, it would be nice if she could actually do magic instead of being a witch in name only. Her best friend Libbie is mixing magical cocktails like she’s Tom Cruise in that bartender movie. So far, the only residual effect of Kate’s cocktail is a hangover.

So Kate is thrilled when a magical cocktail recipe finally appears in her book—until she drinks it. Suddenly her run of good fortune takes a left turn. With her life spinning out of control, Kate is desperate to regain her tight grip on the wheel—without stopping to question whether she should.

As her perfect veneer continues to crack, Kate is forced to confront a reflection she doesn’t recognize, and she soon discovers that losing her golden touch might just be the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

Perfect Kate..

.. but is her really life perfect?

As a motivational speaker and internet sensation Kate has spent her life showing others how to have it all.. husband, home, kids and career that's flourishing, with a book deal and her own radio show lined up.. she's about to tick off her last life goals.. but when Inga's book bursts out a new cocktail everything seems to go wrong.

She develops a wart, has a hair dye disaster, injures herself and more besides.. after a catastrophic Thanksgiving dinner she makes her biggest mistake yet inadvertently posting a new video she's not even aware she recorded.. but is it? Could this mistake that loses her the book deal she's dreamed of since childhood actually make her more successful than she was before?

Kate needs to delve into the past and ask herself does she really need to prove herself to anyone? Would being even more perfect have saved her mother's life? Was it truly her fault her father left? Only when Kate realises the truth about herself and accepts herself warts and all can she truly appreciate the life and family she has.

Chase has a habit of dumping in background information rather than letting it come out naturally.. it takes the edge off the story.. this is a less original idea than Libbie's tale and it needed something more to lift it above the parapet.. it's not a bad read it's just not the best read.. middle of the road.

The ‘matriarch’ of their cocktail club dies and bequeaths her magical assets and a cat to her four friends. Ideal wife, perfect mother and stickler for routine Kate says deviation is poor planning. She’s ready for the magic to happen, if there is such a thing. But it isn’t or Kate would get magical abilities first and not have to ask for help. But she does.

Silently seething with resentment at her inattentive husband while presenting a never ruffled facade to the world that she can handle any and everything with equal ease, no matter the stress, Kate works her media channel and hopes it’ll lead to her dream of a book deal. Things unsettle for Kate but the magic happens when she makes a change.

Unfortunately, I didn’t like this outing as well as it’s predecessor because I didn’t warm to Kate. However, I’m still looking forward to the others in the series.

not quite as good as the first in the series but very enjoyable nonetheless

I did like the first book of the series more, but that didn’t stop this one from being a good and enjoyable second book.

The characters were fleshed out a bit more, and of course the next woman in line to access her new witch abilities was the focus. Kate was an interesting character. I think everyone knows someone like her in their lives, if not is that person themselves.

No person should ever have that much stress put on them, by herself or their family and friends. Her story goes a long way to hopefully helping the reader to acknowledge that things are not always greener in the next pasture, though it may look it.

I like how the author allowed the character to change her life, but still not lose those things that mean the most to her. It would have been easy to allow Kate and her husband, Lucas, to part ways when she offered him the out. I found it a lot more satisfying to have him tell her that wasn’t really a consideration, so long as they both found a way to improve their situation and relationship.

Her prior to being a witch life, wasn’t completely horrible of course. She worked hard to keep that appearance up. Though as her job seemed to be as a life coach, it is surprising that she didn’t already realize that such created imagery wasn’t real. There must have been enough realness though, as her friends and most importantly her own children didn’t seem deprived.

I am glad that Ms Chase didn’t change the dynamic with Kate’s in-laws. Sometimes those horrid stereotypes are a stereotype for a reason. Lucas’s parents definitely fit that stereotype well and I don’t think magic was going to change their outlooks ever. Leaving them as is was a nice touch, it kept a sense of reality that might possibly had been lost otherwise.

I did find it interesting that as competitive as Kate was, and as much reading and research she involved herself with, on magic and herbology, that Kate’s journal didn’t get extra recipes like Libbie’s had in the first novel. I can’t decide if she should have had more, because she had all the ladies in the end to touch on. Many of these women in the RISE movement might have been able to use a unique magical cocktail or mocktail. I would think Libbie would have created more of the do-it-yourself recipes after starting, where Kate would have gotten more of the journal appearing recipes by Inga’s and now Kate’s use of the witch asset. That it seemed it should have been the opposite case, as it surprised me it hadn’t gone that route. Though it didn’t detract from the story either, so either way, was still a feel good story.

It will be interesting to see how the third novel continues to grow these uniquely written characters and their lives and interactions.

Another grand slam. Book to in a new series. Absolutely amazing.

Book number one was a grand slam. Number two is another grand slam. An outstanding cast of characters in an extraordinary storyline. A group of women who meet once a week to enjoy a cocktail at one of their friends houses. Four of the women are in the mid-40s to mid-50s. The other is 85-year-old Inga. This is a bit of a spoiler for book one. Unfortunately in the beginning a book one Inga dies of a heart attack. She was 85 years old lived a long and experience life. She outlived three husbands and enjoyed Life to the fullest. In her well she left her four friends a small inheritance. It wasn’t her house it wasn’t all her money. She left them her which is assets. Her magic one of her four cats and a blank magical journal. In book one our main character has her magic awaken end it changes her life. You’ll have to rebook one to find out everything that goes on. In book to our main character is Kate and yes it is her turn to have her magic awaken. Once again it is a life-changing event. You will have to read on to figure out if it is good or bad. Whether you feel sorry for her or are happy for her. It is another intense and enduring story and will entertain you from beginning to end. I’m guessing book 3 and book for will be the other two women in our group having their magic awaken. Hopefully the Series will continue on after that in stories that will involve a mixture of all of them. This series has a lot of potential. Do not miss out. Get it now and read it now.

Bewitching Bitters by Annabel Chase is Book two in the Midlife Magic Cocktail Club series. I love this Paranormal Women's Fiction series. This is a stand alone book, but definitely check out Magic Uncorked, the first book in the series, you will love it!

Bewitching Bitters focuses on Kate Golden's story. You know the type, the PERFECT LIFE. Amazing husband, three great kids and a career to die for as a motivational speaker.

Now that Kate is a witch, things start to change and not necessarily for the better or so Kate thinks.

I LOVE the characters in this book , they are in their 40's and complex, flawed and well fleshed out.

I laughed so much in this book because I could so relate to what these women are going through in midlife. But what if midlife is just the beginning of life?

The story is magical and perfectly paced. I could not put this book down. I really enjoy this series and cannot wait for the next book !!!

Not gonna lie … this one was scary.

Kate Golden had the bull by the horns and she had the cape to prove it. But, perfection was really her Fortress of Solitude.

When her “magic” showed up, her fortress started to crack. She got a hairy wart on her chin, inadvertently sided her hair pink, and had to get reading glasses. This vortex of despair was sucking Kate down the drain.

Then, she ended up in the hospital. One of her cocktail club members got her there, and stayed with her through the battery of tests.

That meant all the balls Kate was juggling, fell by the wayside. That meant her husband dealt with the kids for more than just a few hours. That meant cracks in her foundation of perfection that let sunlight and real life in.

And it was glorious.

Phew. (Dodged a real downer there.)

So relatable

Kate is a much more controlled version (in the beginning) but she's me. Over 40, still struggling to be perfect, to make all the balls stay in the air all the time... its draining even when you feel accomplished. I adore her journey. I love Lucas, he loves her for her - no matter what.

I hope this book is read by every woman who ever feels like they need to be seen as someone else's version of who they are... even just sometimes. Body images, someone else's opinion of your parenting, of your job, whatever. Woman tend to hide something of themselves to be something else for someone else. The people who love you, love you FOR all the ugly and imperfect, not despite it. Fantastic story

The Golden Egg Cracks

After Libby has her magic on an even keel, it's time for the next one to have a recipe show up in their book. This time it's inspirational speaker and YouTube sensation, Kate Golden. With a book deal in the starting phase, and the appearance of the be all, do all working SuperMom. She's not sure what her cocktail will do, but she's going for the book to go through. Wrong! She makes the cocktail with Libby supervising and after she drinks it everything goes wrong! She mis-colors her hair (read twice), gets a wart... The poor girl is a mess! Why??? Read it and find out.

I really enjoyed this second installment of the Midlife Magic Cocktail Club series, with Bewitching Bitters focused on Kate’s story. Kate has her life completely together and under control, with a perfect husband and kids, and a highly successful job as a motivational speaker on the internet.

When a cocktail recipe finally appears in her empty journal bequeathed from Inga, she makes the recipe immediately. The problem is, Kate’s fortune immediately makes a turn for the worse. There were some really humorous moments that followed, and I enjoyed reading how Kate rose to overcome these new obstacles.

I’m looking forward to the next one!

This book was a great continuation of the series. The author skilfully let us experience Kate's feeling of needing to be perfect, and how right things feel when true importance is evaluated. I really liked how the author worked the cat into the story, Inga's 4 cats each inherited by a member of their cocktail club/coven.
Cats are often overlooked, their steady companionship is invaluable. This story was a wonderful illustration of that.
Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Another fun read from Annabel Chase.

While Kate Golden is living her charmed life under the surface we can see she is struggling to maintain the facade of being the perfect, "everything" until that is her book which was a gift from dear Inga has a cocktail recipe.
That's when Kate's life really gets interesting, starting with her wart... well after all she did inherited a witch's magic.
A story with a subtle message, be true to who you underneath your own wart.
Can't wait to read book 3 in Midlife Magic Cocktail Club.

Love this world

I love the world that the author has created in this series! However, I didn’t like this book nearly as much as the first one. The writing was stellar- it was more that I really just didn’t like Kate. I know that’s not nice, but I just found her absolutely exhausting. That’s probably bc she was exhausted herself- but I’m already an exhausted mom. That fact aside, I love this group of friends- and Kate’s neighbor, small role she may play, was my fav supporting character.

More than I bargained for

I’m going to be honest, I spent the first half of this book disliking Kate. I had to put the book down and walk away for a few days and come back to it. I’m glad I came back to it, and Kate won me over by the end. I love stories like this where instead of finding new love the main character falls back in love w their spouse and fixes their marriage. Kate’s falling apart and coming back together was heartwarming. It’s nice to be reminded we don’t need to be perfect to be happy.

A redeemed character

I will admit: of the four women from the first book, Kate was the one I liked the least. Too perfect. And the beginning of this book did not help changing my mind about her in the least. OCD, completely obsessed with appearances, both hers physically and her life’s, she was getting on my nerves so much!

So I confess: her string of “bad luck” sort of rejoiced me.

In the end, not only that, but it completely redeemed her to me. After all, imperfection is what makes life fun! So here’s to imperfect women who aren’t afraid to own it!

If this was my first Annabel Chase book, I would never read another. The misogyny is off the charts.

A strong organized woman who does everything for everyone AND manages her health and her very successful business. Her husband makes less than her but also leaves all the parenting responsibilities to her.

Guess which one of them is shown to be needing to change. Go ahead.

He says "Gosh I should have been more involved. Sorry." and now everything's fine. Oh and he never wants to have sex with her and more or less calls her an ice queen.

HATEFUL.

The title was interesting and the story even more so. The second woman to be blessed or cursed with her gift of witchcraft is Kate. Kate who must remain on top of any and all situations, who is in control of all that is happening and is totally exhausted emotionally and spirtually.......and then weird stuff starts to happen after she drinks her cocktail. Something with hair dye, a facial growth and a stranded boat which never ever would have happened in her perfect life only it did with some very interesting results. Loved it!!!!

Definitely not as good as the first book but still light and cozy. I like the premise, but the main character’s personality grated on me. I found her perfectionism to be so extreme as to be unrealistic, and while the reasoning for her to be thar way to be justified, the about face she inevitably completes at the end of the novel even more unrealistic. A perfectionist completely reversing a most defining personality trait? I just don’t see it.

Overall, it’s not bad, but definitely not as good as the first. I wouldn’t recommend the book, especially to anyone trying to parent.

Inspirational and satisfying

I loved Libbie's story in the first volume so much that I was afraid I wouldn't appreciate Ms. Perfection, Kate's, story. But we learn so much about why Kate became a control-obsessed perfectionist, and how she struggles with her witch-gift but manages in the end to be a better person to herself and others. An entertaining and inspirational transformation.

Absolutely loved this story!

Kate is married and a mother of 3...not to mention a motivational speaker. She had a YouTube channel where she posts videos helping others
But things go awry when she discovers her first cocktail appears in her witch book
A great story and from start to finish in an afternoon...that is how good it was
Get the first book in the series as well as this one you won't be disappointed

Mrs Perfect?

We all all know someone who's life appears perfect and everything seems to come easily to. You want to hate them but can't because they are just too nice for words. That is Kate Golden's life, until it isn't. When her new witchy powers don't manifest quite the way she thinks they should and her perfectly controlled world spirals out of control. This quirky, funny, sometimes emotional story, will tug at your heart strings. I'm off to get the next book!

Bitter Indeed

Kate Golden is indeed golden. She’s Pennsylvania’s answer to Martha Stewart. That is, until she comes into her witch powers. Unlike Libbie, when Kate drinks her first magical cocktail, the results are disastrous, or are they? Sometimes, you have to go up in flames, before you can rise again like the Phoenix. Another must read from Annabel Chase. You made me cry; I’ll get you for that. Oh yeah: F$ck this: I’m WELL Over 60! 😂

More therapy in a book

Thank you again, Annabel Chase. All week I've been in a low spot. I finished Book 1 and felt better. And after Book 2 I'm ready to get back to my goals. Don't think these books are that sickly sweet kind full of feel good platitudes. They are gritty and realistic. These characters have families, careers, and families...and problems. And the magic is believable. The kind we can all conjure in our own lives.

Real talk

I really like this series, and this book is even better than the first. Magic and handsome husband aside, it’s so relatable and the characters are refreshingly normal and fun. The lesson here is sh*t happens to the best of us. Sometimes you have to embrace the changes that ensue.

Wow!

The stress of trying to be perfect finds Kate. After waiting to receive her witchy gifts and instead getting an attribute of a witch Kate thinks she did something wrong. Then all things go so wrong! Finding herself in predicaments she has to learn to let go a bit. Read away witches!

Wonderful

I can't say enough good things about this book or this series. I am totally hooked. Annabel Chase is a genius with words and a great story line. Her books are pure enjoyment all the way through plus a bit if a lesson to mull on. I am so excited about the next book in the series. I know it will be just as wonderful as the previous two. Not your average book, it is so much more!

Annabel has shown, in written word so it is the truth, that the lives we live may not be the best for us. Throw in those lovely felines and a little bit of magic and this series is going to be exactly what we need. I cannot wait for the next one!

Great book!

Not only was this a great sequel in this series, but it's an insightful reminder that no one is perfect! So you not only get a super read, but it's also a kind of self help.book that's fun and interesting. You don't even realize it until it happens! Loved it. Thank you Annabel!!!

Nobody's perfect!

The theme of the book was my title. Very interesting story about how we can lose sight of what's important in !ife. I really enjoyed it. As someone who is a perfectionist in some areas I understand the anxiety that happens when everything is not the way you want it. Loved the marriage getting on track too.

Where did the magic go?

I found the first book a refreshing spin on magic. While I liked the journey Kate went on, the magic wasn't there compared to the first one compared to the first one. I couldn't figure out what Kate's gift was whereas Libbie's is made obvious. Hoping this changes in book 3 for whoever gets theirs next.

Quirky

This is a quirky and funny story about the old sayin when it rains it pours. And brother does it rain on Kate. It is hearting as well to see how an older woman can still get into a bit a trouble and overcome it. Just because we are older does not mean that we make the best decisions.
