I am Chris Ferrie, father of four and happy husband. My day job is academic research where I follow my curiosity through the word of quantum physics. My passion for communicating science has led from the most esoteric topics of mathematical physics to more recently writing children’s books.
This book impressed me! I was expecting words like grass, bug, ant, cat, cloud, tree. Instead we have brackish, biodiversity, anemone, deforestation, nocturnal, and atoll. Wow! Now there were simpler words in there, but I do appreciate a rare book that allows me to teach bigger words to my young daughter.
I’ve never seen a board book with tons of words I’ve never heard “laughing”. Germinate, terrestrial, arthropod, deciduous… I bet your 2yo has already knew all these words, that’s just me, ESL student forever “giggling”.
Thanks to Sourcebooks Early Reads, I read this little book. I was drawn to order it for the pictures and the fact that I am a nature lover. Let me start by saying, I expected something different due to the title and pictures and the book has won me over.
The pictures are colorful and bright to appeal to babies and toddlers. At first blush I thought this book would have narrow/niche appeal but I've opened it now a few times and it is growing on me. Still in all, I had to look up the word 'epiphyte'. If the more senior or adult reader is inclined to like words and the child is patient and inclined to like words and words that can be made fun like sloth, fungi and cactus, then this book is a winner. Many of the pictures host a smile which I didn't notice immediately. This book gives on a number of levels.
The author believes it is never too soon to introduce small children to big ideas and I agree with the concept.
Recently I read a title in this series about oceanography and I thought it was a bit much for the toddler set for which board books are aimed. This one is much more accessible and covers numerous aspects of nature in a broad way. Double page boards on everything from animals, deserts, wetlands to rivers and lakes. There was one example in rivers and lakes that was a bit “deep” for the young learner. With the illustration stratified which is a cross section of a river are the three labels in parentheses epilimnion, metaliminion, and hypolimnion which refer to three zones of a river. This river lover was definitely intrigued by the terms, but still a bit much for the board book set. I am looking forward to reading the author’s title on art.
Chunky, padded board book with beautiful illustrations and not-your-typical nature words to introduce to your baby or toddler. Each two page spread introduces your child to a different climate and the types of plants and animals found in each environment. I received a free copy from Sourcebooks Early Reads program.
