The adventure continues! Hawke Lightseeker, Twilight Templar, prepares to confront the Necromancer who feeds on the souls of his fellow Eternals. Before he can lead his band of adventurers into the dread mountain fastness, however, Hawke must conquer a Lair, help organize the town of Orom, and raise his strength in a series of increasingly more difficult Quests.
C.J. discovered his obsession with making up crap and writing it down at the age of 6, when he wrote his first short story, back in the days when the Cold War was still on and the only mobile devices were the wrist watch and the walkie-talkie. He's been making up crap and writing it down for fun and profit ever since.
For a relatively short book, this one dragged on and on. The whole XP reset system is designed to make the characters not level up too fast so that the writer could cobble together some kind of story, but it sucks so much. It just kills the desire to read further once all the progress is lost because of some idiotic mistake the MC does. It would have been better if they just lost the progress from the current level and the memory hit.
The number of times people need to die if they're 'eternals' just adds to this issue as the number of times and ways the main necromancer villain had to be put down shows. That bastard was worse that a cockroach.
I guess that the author tries to replace this lack of progress in levels with the number of different skills and spells everyone gets. but then he just overloads them so much that by the end I just didn't care. Any time the MC would use a spell I didn't know about I would just guess he got it somewhere and went on. This is no way to build up your characters.
Also, why do people from Earth have to be either morons or some kind of evil bastards? Most people are pretty normal. Would have been cool if so many of them weren't just over-exaggerated character traits.
I wouldn't recommend reading this if you're not a hardcore LitRPG fan.
First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
Over the past year it has become apparent that my reviews are somewhat antagonistic and I apologize to those of you that have taken offense. I think I had hoped to change peoples’ minds about reviewing works of art and that seems to have backfired spectacularly. However, I am still going to be true to myself and write what I believe.
To the author: Thank you for this chance to escape reality and enjoy the world you created! Keep up the good work.
To my fellow reviewers: Messaging me and reviewing my reviews is as productive as trying to shovel water out of the ocean. Stop. I get it. Let’s just all live peacefully.
To potential readers: Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
I am not enjoying this 2nd book of the series as much as the first.
The author is writing the protagonist as being overconfident, cocksure, macho and making a lot more mistakes. Apparently, the author believes in the school of writing that says: "You have to make the protagonist fail and look stupid to increase suspense and reach a later crescendo in the story." The main character's attitude of "Don't worry, we can overcome anything" or "We'll figure it out later" is killing the story for me. That is c-suite affirmation style, gung-ho management B.S. that I loath in life.
This book is feeling like misery-porn. I may just quit the series. Finishing this book is beginning to feel like a trial of Sisyphus just to endure the "Dungeon" portions of the narration.
Also: The harem is getting on my nerves even more in this book. I'm a guy, and I have no respect for other guys who let their little head lead them around in life. It gives all guys a bad look. *sigh*
Mistakes: Lots of missing words throughout this book. Good story that just needs a good editing.
Plot: Hunting down a necromancer can be tough work, but the hero is probably up to the task. While the Mc has a harem I’m glad that it hasn’t hurt the story by devolving into pages of pointless sex. It’s always fade to black.
Characters: Can you say O.P.? However it is done in an interesting way with a likable character.
The first one was much better. MC has like 600 abilities, even with game mechanics and boosted intelligence even he can't remember them all much less the lowly un upgraded human reader. Guy robs him and is threatening to kill him and he's like bff's, kinda sorta haremy without the explicit scenes. Probably read the next one, the first one was very good, this was much less so.
The second installment has done an amazing job of continuing the story and keeping me up to ridiculous hours of the morning because I cant put it down.
C.J has done an amazing job of powering hawke up but still providing adequate adversaries so he does not appear too OP. I highly recommend this series to all readers to this genre, new and old.
This has been another amazing installment and all I can say is thank you.
I find C. J. Carella generally to write a good book with a nice balance between action and exanation. In this one he went a little too far on the explanation side. Often I felt as though I was in the final pages of the Aenid with Hawke chopping one monster after another. Of course the series is based upon an RPG so maybe there's no way around that.
The only knock I have is the MC is Lawful Stupid. But given that, the MC doesn't change from who he is and it ha a real feel for how people new to a world like this would act.
Enjoy this author and his work. He is able to craft an interesting world and characters. The MC is just dumb enough to irritate you but luckily has smart women around him. Looking forward to the next book
Fast paced page turner with interesting characters that you can instantly root for. Only complaint to many stats and long skills descriptions. I will be getting book three when it comes out
So far so good. I liked this book as much as the first one, and I look forward to book 3. Two related bits of advice to the MC though: listen to the women in your life (especially your sword), and never do an enemy (even if they are new enemies) a small injury.
This is the second book to come out in this series and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. If you haven't read any of the other books in this series you are really missing out.
What else could u ask for I. A litrpg book. Leveling up. Dungeons and labyrinths violence sexy drugs and rock n roll. Lol. Cannot wait for book 3 later on in the month.
Really enjoy readjng this series and book. The ook is well written and the world has some interesting "twists" that I have not seen in any other litrpg. Highly recommend this series
Not a bad read, but nothing special either. Simple and short, though the MC is written a bit insane, not in a good way. Better than most littpg mechanics in other books. If food, it’d be fast food.
Fantastic read! I absolutely love the development of the main character, and the humor the main character projected! I cant wait for the next book to come out!!
I really enjoyed this book, the plot was interesting and the characters are interesting. The main character is OP but I like that sometimes in my stories.
