This and That by Julie Sykes and Tanya Linch is a really fun story which was a good read. This and That follows a cat who is going around the farm borrowing items from the animals. When questioned as to what cat needs these items for, she always responds 'this and that'. The animals on the farm grow curious of cat and decide to follow her to the stable where they discover that cat has been borrowing all of these items to look after her newborn kittens which are called This and That.
I used this story in EYFS when we were learning about the farm as this book had lots of farm animals inside which the children were familiar with. The story was used as a carpet time book which was read to the children either after lunch or at the end of the day.
The children really enjoyed the book because they could start to recognise some of the familiar sentences in it, such as when the cat responds 'this and that' each time she is questioned about the things she has borrowed.
This story would also be good as a circle time story to get the children thinking about newborns and the ways in which we need to look after newborn babies/animals to keep them safe.
Four stars for This and That, which means that I realy liked it! The book is simple, easy to read, with repetitions (which is very important for kids), and gives a lot of topics to talk about. For example, for my son and me the book started a discussion and a week-long exploration of nest-building, the ways it can be done, and why animals need nests. Perfect.
A cute book about a cat who goes collecting scraps. She tells the other farm animals that it is for "this and that" the reader gets a pleasant surprise when they find out that "this and that" are two tiny kittens! A fun book to read aloud. Great use for making predictions!
