Good read for children

Danny, a little dinosaur, does not like waiting. He gets frustrated when he has to wait for something to happen.

What happens when his parents try to teach him the importance of being patient? Nice illustrations and lovely read for children.

Little Danny throws a tantrum whenever things don’t go in his favor. He gets angry when he doesn’t get his own way. His parents are very patient with him, they always know how to calm him down. A fun and educative book for young readers

Oh dear the difficulties we have being patient and learning to wait our turn or for a special event.
As we get older we learn the social norms and rules for turn taking or driving - The Highway Code.
For children time is compressed and now is the reality for them.

As Veruca Salt said: “I want it now.”

Sarah Read has produced a series of books addressing such issues and hard to pin down emotions. In The Impatient Dinosaur, Danny the little Dino finds situations were frustration gets the better of him as he has to side in line or the queue to do down.

I again liked the simple words and bright engaging illustrations which enhance these stories. It is a good lesson to share and in highlighting special times like birthday surprises our pre-school children can see the benefit of waiting at times.

The railways learned that passengers were most angered by late trains in the not knowing aspect. When the announcer says the train is running late due to a points failure the wait is no less frustrating but can be processed and understood better.

This is a skill children can only learn if we explain events better and show that waiting time can still be worthwhile and filled with positive activities.

These books are not the answer in themselves but can be the means for sharing difficult concepts and turning our conversations with our kids into fun.

I picked up this book for my son, who is a little too young for the book at this time as he is only 11 months old but I know it will come in handy later when he is older. Just like Sarah Read's other book that I read, this book is also filled with colorful illustrations.

The Dinosaur in this book is very impatient an does not understand why he has to wait to checkout at the grocery store in a line or for a store to open or for a surprise gift. His Mom tries to explain to him why he has to wait but I feel like the explanations are very short and do not really explain the "why".

I also did not find that their were a lot of techniques that were given to help the Dinosaur cope with being impatient. The one technique that was given was to tell him something that would make him smile, which ultimately contributed to him being more impatient because he wanted to know what his surprise was.

Rating: 3 out 5 because I did not find all of the explanations that the Dinosaur's parents gave him as to why he had to wait very relatable and didn't find that their were any techniques to use to help with being impatient.

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this review copy. This is my honest opinion.

The Impatient Dinosaur is a tale about a young child dino who does not like to wait for anything.

Raising a now 4 yr old boy, patience is virtue we are learning daily at home. It's hard to wait, it's hard to entertain yourself, it's hard to be patient. So obviously, this book appealed to me.

Firstly, I do not care for the illustrations. It's too cartoony rather than artistic, whimsical, realistic, or pretty. Secondly, the moral of the story fell short. The dino-child is ultimately taught that he will get a reward every time he is patient, rather than simply being taught to obey because it's the right and respectful thing to do. If a book is going to have such a heavy-handed moral message, it needs to actually be a good one. I much prefer a moral that is taught through a parable rather than spelled out so obviously and unimaginatively.

Furthermore, it's written in forced, jumbling rhyme. It was not a pleasant read aloud.

My rating: ★★☆☆☆
My child's rating: ( ̄。 ̄)~zzz
Overall: ★★☆☆☆

The Impatient Dinosaur stumbles through, what is supposed to be, a lesson in patience. We have read several other books in Sarah Read's series of book on feelings but this one is definitely the least favorite for both my child and I.

As the parent of a 4 1/2 year old, impatience and the difficulty of learning to be patient is one that we spend a lot of time culminating in our house. I did not feel like this story was helpful in teaching children anything at all about patience. Instead the moral of the story appears to be, "scream enough and you will get what you want". Which, for obvious reasons, is not exactly a life lesson I wish to encourage. Danny the dinosaur doesn't really seem to learn anything and his parents don't impart any wisdom or tips on how to help him relax. There is not much substance in this particular book. It was quite clunky to read out loud also. The rhyming scheme was strange and off. I don't generally get twisted up while reading and found myself pausing awkwardly try to get the flow to sound natural. There's also a page where Danny is described as "whining" but is depicted has having an aggressive angry scream. I feel that the publisher may have rushed too fast trying to get these books out, as its the third one from this author published this year. Perhaps a bit more time being rounded out and proofread would've helped making this hit home more. Unfortunately, The Impatient Dinosaur just missed the mark all around for me.

My Impatient 4 1/2 year old sidekick's opinion: "Ohh, Mama, he is naughty. He should be kinder. What I like about the book? I don't know Mama, I don't feel anything about this book. I like the pictures. Maybe his mama should talk to him about his feelings more"

Danny the dino is one impatient dude. His mom and dad help him navigate his feelings and emotions on impatience and help teach him how being patient can pay off in the end.

On my website, I feature Mommy & Me reviews where I read books to my 4 year old daughter and then we chat about them afterwards. In these reviews, I give my take on the book as a parent and I write down everything that my daughter had to say about it.

Mommy Review: I like how this story helped call attention the feelings associated with impatience. For example, when Danny is in line at the grocery store and says, “But my tummy feels knotted” and “my face feels red” and his mother consoles him by explaining he’s upset and to breathe and it will pass. Another great example is when the dino family is in the car and Danny is getting anxious about being in the car for a long time and says, “I’m fed up and feel really mad” and the dad explains that he has to have patience and that traffic won’t last long. His mom distracts him by giving him something to look forward to (his birthday present). These are all great ways to teach young ones to recognize feelings associated with impatience and how to manage it. I only wish we could have found out what Danny’s birthday present was, talk about a cliffhanger! :)

Kiddo Review:
Kid - “I like that book!”
Me - “Oh yeah? Me too. What did you like about it?”
Kid - *Flips to sitting in the car page* “I liked this part because Danny looks funny.
Me - “Yeah he kind of does. He looks really frustrated, right?”
Kid - “Yeah”
Me - “What do you think this story is trying to teach?”
Kid - “Umm...I think it’s talking about how to be patient.”
Me - “That’s right! Do you think Danny learned his lesson?”
Kid - “Probably not.”

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to read "The Impatient Dinosaur" in exchange for my honest review.

Ms. Read has crafted an excellent resource for parents, teachers, caregivers - really anyone that is involved with educating children. I also found that there were veins in this story that can resonate with adults as well!

This book is aimed at children in the ages 3 to 5 category or preschoolers. However I feel that even older children can benefit from the message that is in this book. The main topic of the book is our emotions and feelings.

This book shows children a lesson - that we all children and adults alike - have to wait for things. Be that in line at a shop or in traffic - we spend our lives waiting and it's not always fun. How when we are looking forward to something sometimes we are unhappy because waiting is hard for all of us.

Parents and educators through a tool like this book can encourage children to explain and express how they are feeling, why they feel upset and then we can help them channel those feelings into positive actions.

I would also like to point out that the illustrator of this book did a fantastic job creating the characters. The pictures are all colourful, engaging and the Dinosaur is simply adorable. I think children will sit and take notice because children love bright colours and characters that appeal to them like dinosaurs.

I think Ms. Read did an exceptional job writing this book and I absolutely encourage anyone that is involved with children and educating them to use this book as the wonderful tool that it can be to start a conversation with children.

The virtue of Patience

Sarah Read enters the world of children’s books authors with a fine selection of entertaining as well as educational illustrated stories, populated with fun characters who act out the various emotions children (of all ages!) must face. In this book the topic is Patience – a particularly pertinent one in this time of home isolation!

The excellent illustrations, apparently by the author, visualize Danny the dinosaur – a favorite character among imaginative youngsters – and the rhyming content begins as follows: ‘Danny the dinosaur is a great little guy. Although usually patient, he can’t understand why He should have to wait for anything. Waiting makes his mad. It’s the main thing he complains about to his mom and dad.’ In the grocery store he urges his mom to move to the head of the line so he can go home and play: his mother calms him with breathing ideas. At the mall the toy store is closed for lunch break– another whine, but with patience, the store opens. In a traffic jam Danny complains to his parents about the wait, and his mother nudges his thinking by mentioning a surprise birthday present: “I’m sure you will love it. If you’re patient enough, you’ll see.” “You know I hate waiting,” said Danny. “It makes me unhappy.” But Danny waits – and the result is a birthday surprise that is the best ever!

Cute story with a fine message, this is just the kind of early reader books children need – and love. The pleasure is extended at book’s end with coloring pages to augment a child’s joy. Hats off to a new savvy author!

Danny (dinosaur) was out with his mom & didn’t want to stand in the checkout line.
Danny wanted a new ball to play with.
His patience was running out.
Danny was getting mad because dad had to wait in a traffic jam.

How will his mom & dad surprise him?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary; MS/HS age) storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (overcoming frustration), Dinosaur movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

This is a lovely book, we read it with two young children and they loved it too! What we loved most about this book that's it was teaching our children to be patient through one of their fave animal characters. The layout of this book is a mix and it's very easy, they were able to flick through, there was lots of discussion between pictures and writing and and it's made it easy for the children ask questions.

There are some parts in this book, I really liked, especially how Danny the dinosaur calls on his thoughts and feelings as far as impatience makes him feel, I really loved that he was able to connect with that. There are lots of parts like this in the book and I love that as they're great ways of teaching children how to recognise their feelings and also deal with them.

I really love the writing, how it explains so easily the importance of being patient and the consequences of impatience, a good lesson for all kids think. I am really loving this author and will be looking for more of her work in the future.

This book did not do what it was trying to. The impatient dino stays impatient, he even gets a surprise birthday for it. Yeah we're supposed to think that he acted patient for a while and was rewarded with the party, but it doesn't come across like this.
There could have been more emphasis on waiting and being patient and him realising that waiting isn't so bad after all.
The design of the book is okayish. It could do better with a different typeface and cover. The font isn't very attractive or pleasing. The art is decent, sometimes good. But the writing sounds off. Even though the book is in rhyme, it loses its flow again and again, lacking the sing song quality that should accompany such a style.

The Impatient Dinosaur by Sarah Read, This book is so sweet I just had to purchase this for my nephew who just loves Dinosaurs.........and it was magical to see his face whilst opening his box of dinosaur goodies for his birthday. All he wanted to do is have me read this sweet book to him and his friends. Perfect birthday for him.......

"So, Why is waiting so hard for dinosaurs?

This book was very colourful and sweet and it kept a birthday dinosaur party very entertained. All the children loved it and we ended up having so much fun with this book. It maybe little but it made 4 small children and my nephew very happy!

I thought that this book was really well written and like that it rhymed where possible too which gave it a lovely flow as I was reading it to my daughter.

As a mum I thought that the book was great, at times little kids do get bored and impatient and this one shows that there can be good stuff if you are patient and wait but it is not so easy when you are little and every minute feels like an hour – definitely one I will be reading with my daughter again – she is still at the age where she tends to want things right away so the book will be great if it can help break that habit.

It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!

Thanks to whichever author/publisher allowed a read through NetGalley. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book. There are many flaws to its execution, including:
1. Didactic, does not really tell a story, just preaches
2. Attempts at rhyme did not work. The lines didn't scan smoothly/properly, and it was abandoned 2/3 of the way through.
3. Misspellings and punctuation errors everywhere.
4. The digital dinos were reminiscent of the Land Before Time, but not as well drawn.

The way to teach a kid about patience is not to preach to them. It is to SHOW them how it works within an engaging tale or activity.

Danny the dinosaur is like a lot of young children. They don’t want to wait for anything. They want everything now. They get upset and frustrated when they are told they have to wait. Danny is the same way. He has a birthday coming up and his parents tell him he will have to wait for a big surprise. He tells them that they know he hates waiting. Will he learn to be patient and wait for his surprise? I love the book and its message. The illustrations are wonderful. I have a grandson who loves dinosaurs and is a lot like Danny. This is a book I know he will love.

So I will say first that illustrations never loaded with this book. The writing style was fun and rhymed, I appreciated that. I liked that they showed that the boy dinosaur was getting impatient and that was what was making him feel angry. However I felt that the parents only pacified that behavior. They didn't address the feeling and try to help him work through it. I would like to see them give examples of how he could have dealt with his feelings instead of throwing toys or surprises at the impatience. Just my feelings.

This children's book is about a dinosaur who has no patience and he doesn't understand why he can't have what he wants right away. His parents try to teach him to be more patient and to think about other people's feelings too. My daughter and I enjoyed this book and I think it helped her to understand patience a bit more. The graphics in the book were very realistic and my daughter could understand how the dinosaur felt by looking at the graphics.

I loved this book! I have my only little impatient dinosaur at home, and as we read through the book it brought up new "names" for emotions he feels and helped him discover ways to explain them himself.
The different scenarios throughout show varied ways to distract, or reward patience, which is great for children to learn.
The illustrations were very well done, I love this artists style and have read another book by this author & illustrator.
I can't fault it, we enjoyed it and it would be great for teaching children at home to understand patience.

This was a great little story to read to my youngest son as his birthday is coming up in the next week and he has been getting very overexcited and inpatient waiting for it. He is also autistic and dinosaurs are his special interest so I couldn’t pick a better character to try and teach him the lesson of patience. Fun rhyming couplets and bright simple pictures. Nice little book.

This book is about an impatient dinosaur learning patience. The story started out really good but the ending fell flat to me. I do think this is a book my young daughters would enjoy but more could have been added to the end to help teach the lesson better.

This book is written in a way that is very relatable for young children as they all face frustrating situations that require them to develop patience. The author captures the voice of the child character and the parents well. I would have appreciated seeing something noted that encouraged also intrinsic motivation of children to be patient and not always expecting to receive rewards for being patient.

Danny the dinosaur hates waiting. He has to wait in the checkout line, wait for his favorite toystore to open, and even wait in the car. His birthday comes around, but he has to wait for that too! If Danny can't manage his anger and impatience, he risks being unhappy all the time.

A few of the rhymes could have used a little more work, but overall, this is a fun story with an engaging plot. The ending is a bit open, leaving room for parents and teachers to discuss the key concepts more.

My son absolutely loves dinosaurs and this book was a perfect read for when he was being just a bit impatient. It lets him see himself but as a dinosaur and how his reactions may not be the best. While he enjoyed the book the message may have gotten a little lost in translation. But if we keep reading and discussing this it may help with giving him a bit more patience.

Danny the Dinosaur is learning another important social skill in this book. He has to learn that he can't have everything right when he wants it. Again, mom and dad are able to give him tools to help him learn to control his emotions.
