While fishing with the farmer one day, a hen plops down on an egg, and ends up hatching a baby alligator. At first, he fits in pretty well down on the farm, but before long, he's growing like a weed, and eating nearly everything in sight. A very cute, wordless story with delightful artwork by the author.
Cute wordless book I found in a box of old books from my childhood. The chicken follows the farmer who is going to fish, but she only wants to eat the worms. He sends her away to sit on an egg, however when it hatches it turns out to be a crocodile! The crocodile grows up eating everything in sight, and the farmer eventually sends the crocodile away, but his mother the chicken leaves with him. When disaster strikes, the crocodile is there to save the day, and everyone is welcomed back on the farm.
My much loved copy of The Chicken's Child is falling to pieces. This week I read it with a small writing group I run. So much to enjoy and learn from it: character development, story arc, suspense, and the trope of pancakes bringing everything to a happy resolution. A joy for children young and old.
