In this stand-alone companion story to The Cowboy and the Dom Series, Sam’s only remaining brother, Army Ranger and EOD Specialist, Jim Bowie O’Reilly, suffers an injury in the line of duty, and is sent home to the family ranch in Texas to recuperate.
But sometimes you can’t go home again.
Thomas and Sam welcome Bowie for a visit in New York, but their D/s lifestyle doesn’t easily lend itself to long-term house guests. Enter Thomas’s trusted friend, EMT and former combat medic Gabriel “Angel” Rogers. The two men met once before when Bowie visited Sam for his birthday, and it doesn’t take the men long to admit they had an instant attraction. They soon discover their desires overlap as well and they set each other on fire.
But two big men need space and, as neither is in love with the city, Bowie invites Angel back to Texas to vacation in one of the run-down beach houses he’s flipped. On the eve of their departure though, Angel’s coworker and friend is gravely injured in an accident leaving his ambulance crew shorthanded, and Angel stays behind to help his team get back on their feet.
The distance might be more than either man can handle. With a whole country between them, they manage to derail something that had been going so well and it takes a risky intervention to stop them from ruining the best thing they’ve ever had.
JODI spent too many years in New York and San Francisco stage managing classical plays, edgy fringe work, and the occasional musical. She, therefore, is overdramatic, takes herself way too seriously, and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after.
For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila however you pour it. She’s also obsessed with Shakespeare and Broadway musicals. She can be found wearing sock monkey gloves while typing when it’s cold, and on the beach enjoying the sun and the ocean when it’s hot. When she’s not writing and/or vacuuming sand out of her laptop, Jodi mentors queer youth and will drop everything for live music. Jodi lives near New York City with her beautiful wife, and together they are mothers of dragons (cleverly disguised as children) and slaves to an enormous polydactyl cat.
How I loved this series and was so happy when finding out that there was going to be a companion book to the three that make up the main series... and that it was going to be Gabe's (Angel) and Bowie's story. I knew after No Ghosts, book #3, that Jodi was too kind and would never leave us wondering about Bowie and Gabe. I felt so sorry for Bowie in the beginning. An accident had occurred to this long-time soldier and his troop that sent him disconnected from the life he had known for years, and he suddenly finds himself dragging his injured leg and his broken spirit to New York where his remaining brother and his partner live. He remembers that it was also where Gaberial (Angel), also works and lives. He knew that there as something between him and Gabe that couldn't be denied the last time that he was home. You have to love Gabe! The man deserves the name because he is truly an angel, the ultimate loving helper to everyone. Bowie feels broken, and not just in body but also in spirit. The one thing that has been his entire life is gone and he is adrift in a way he has little to no understanding about. Bowie calls Angel his Bear and has quiet and complete trust in his man. Gabriel is good and caring, although he sometimes gets overwhelmed with the feelings, he and Bowie have come to share. Did it all happen too quickly? As I said, I loved the first three books, and I loved this story just as much. Bowie and Gabe's road to happiness isn't always smooth, but they put a great deal of effort into making things work. Sam, Bowies remaining brother, and his partner Thomas are supportive, encouraging and ever so sweet. They are showing Bowie what true "family" means. While this one was less stressful than the other 3 books, since there was no murderer running around... it was just as good from the very first page. This one can be treated as a standalone, but you will get so much more from the characters and the events by first reading the three books before it.
After being injured in the military, Bowie is out and coping rather badly with living back at home with his parents. So his baby brother, Sammy from The Cowboy & the Dom, and Sammy's partner Thomas, come to his rescue and offer a place for him to stay for awhile. That awhile could end up being permanent if their friend Gabe "Angel" has his way.
I was so glad to read Bowie's story after meeting him in Sammy's story. While I may not have liked it quite as much as The Cowboy & the Dom series, it's still entertaining, with light BDSM and lots of steam. Both men had baggage and I like how much they developed, especially Bowie. Neither was big on communicating with their words, but they figured things out eventually. So two likable leads with communication issues, light BDSM, lots of passion, and a great secondary cast, what's not to like? Nothing, so 4 stars seems fair.
This definitely isn't one of my favourites from either Payne or Tortuga - I tend to prefer them both at the angst end of the spectrum rather than at the erotica end of it! And this one is definitely on the erotica side of things.
The positives: it is well written escapism, with enough angst to let you invest in the characters and believe in their connection and relationship.
The negatives: it is erotic escapism, and lands just a tiny bit shy of being a fully formed and executed story.
It is absolutely brilliant for what it is, and I think unfortunately I just wasn't particularly in the mood - once you start skipping the sex scenes, it becomes a much shorter but still enjoyable read.
The Solider and the Angel by authors Jodi Payne and B.A. Tortuga is a stand-alone in the Cowboy and Dom series universe. While this is a standalone novel, I felt it better read in order. Sometimes when you get the dynamics of side characters and their personalities, it is nice to know the back story to that. Sam does feature in this book so I would read the series in order. Gabriel or Angel (his nickname is either Gabe or Angel in this book) is a kind-hearted person who has been through a ton. To make him happy you do not have to do much. He likes a cold beer at the end of a day, good food, and a man to love. Simple kinda guy. He does have his demons to fight but for the most part, he is just a sweet guy. Bowie is Sam’s big brother. He has been through hell and back with this health. He is strongly independent. Little stubborn. But he loves hard and just needs someone to understand him. These two characters were made for each other. They are alike in a lot of ways. This deep understanding is what each of them needs in their lives. I loved getting to know these two men. They are truly a love match.
The distance may be more than either man can handle. This story will take you on a journey of finding home and what it means to Bowie and Angel and can they find it in each other without falling apart. I loved how both men are trying to find what they want and need in a different reality than the use to know and lived for several years. I do recommend this books to anyone loving the genre.
This is the story of paramedic and Dom Gabriel and former Army Ranger Bowie.
My is my first book in the series and I'll admit sometimes in the beginning I felt a little lost.. because of this it took me a while to get into the story but then I was hooked.
I liked the way their relationship grew and evolved. You could feel they were building something special. They were great support for each other. Together they had a strong connection that took me on their journey to a great hea.
This story was an alright read. The kink was very mild, but handled well enough. There was explicit consent and aftercare which I enjoyed immensely.there was sweetness and spiciness that was enjoyable.
I didn’t really feel the connection between the characters that makes for a believably spicy story. I found it a bit rushed and not as realistic and like the chemistry between them lacked the sexual tension or desire that really made two people feel right on paper.
The writing was good, and the plot was good, I just think it could have used more oomph to really connect the characters.
ENG- So well well well... well I really liked the series from which this novel is taken and I must say that I was anxious to see what the authors had in store for Bowie and Angel.
As I have often said, I am new to BDSM romance and what I like about this series is that the characters invent their own rules and confuse the codes of traditional BDSM romance (if so that it exists)
I really liked the dynamics of the Thomas-Sam couple and Bowie and Angel intrigued me enormously. Their story begins quickly and once again, we will focus on the characters, on their story, on their reconstruction, on the construction of their relationship more than on an introduction to BDSM.
Angel is a former Dom but I found that this aspect of his personality did not go back very much in his maturities with Bowie even if, at the end it is a little more present. The sex scenes are hot and I discovered new things that surprised me a lot but the BDSM side is still very soft.
I loved the characters. They are largely up to my expectations, the authors perfectly mastering their universe and their characters.
Apart from Sam and Thomas, the other characters that we could see in the main series are almost absent even if Gabe was already part of this universe. Sam is still so cute and in love with his Thomas and the scenes where the couple appear are really nice.
Bowie and Gabe are really perfect for each other and despite the trials they will go through prove to be very strong together.
Once again, a very interesting and very well written volume. A more than friendly series, which offers some soft but very well brought BDSM elements. Engaging characters, whole and very well mastered, in short, a flawless for the authors.
Steamy, sweet, M/M romance with a touch of Dom/sub Envision this: two buff, huge guys (6’4”) and former military who once had a one-night-stand finding each other again. And, boy did they find each other! This is the story of Gabe and Bowie who have mutual friends and family in common, single and mid-thirties. Gabe (aka Angel, Gabriel or Bear) is an EMT in New York and counts his days on a scale of 1 to 10, always hoping for a number nearer 10 than 1. Bomb specialist, Bowie was injured by a bomb blast and was forced to retire from the Army Rangers. His recuperation at home in Texas with his mother hovering has taken its toll and he’s begging his little brother Sammy to let him come visit. What he doesn’t expect is to run into his one-night-stand again. Here’s the most interesting part…Gabe is into BDSM but hasn’t had a sub for a long time. Can you truly see a guy as big as Bowie is described as a submissive? Hard. Right? So many great characters. This book was written so well, I began to feel like these two guys could be my next-door neighbors. Everything seems perfect until chapter 32. Great ending though. This was a poignant, steamy M/M story between two sweet but tough and sensitive men. They make the D/s work in their own way. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and it comes highly recommended.
**4.5** It's so good to get Gabe and Bowie's story from The Cowboy and The Dom series. I really enjoyed how the relationship grew and developed for Gabe and Bowie. It's not a "standard" dom/sub dynamic but something that they allow to grow as they learn each others desires and how they fit together. They are two very strong men, mentally and physically who have lived a tough life, especially in their jobs. Bowie is recovering from leaving the army with an big injury and Gabe in a position to understand that. They had a great connection when they first met in the Cowboy & Dom series and it carries on throughout this book. Words are not either man's strong suit, this even causes a couple of bumps in their journey but actions and the meaning behind those speak so much louder. Gabe and Bowie's relationship makes for an entertaining read. They have highs and lows together and individually but all of it makes for an enjoyable read. I loved that we got to hear from Thomas and Sammy, it's clear reading from Gabe and Bowie's POV how much they mean to them. Definitely a recommended read and it can be read as a stand alone but I recommend add the series to your TBR as well. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
There are no more two deserving guys meant to be together than these two. I so enjoyed their story. The old saying about "a way to a man's heart is through his stomach" couldn't apply any better than here. Both have a mutual love of cooking and getting together in the kitchen just comes natural for them. These two had a fleeting hookup but it left both men unfulfilled. Travel down the road a few years and he and Gabriel aka/Angel reconnect again when Bowie visits his brother Sam and Sam's partner Tommy in NY. You see he just had to leave his protective and concerned parents in TX after he had been injured in an IED explosion in Afghanistan. Their smothering love was driving him crazy. Bowie reconnects with Angel and the rest is history. Both are looking for that someone special and realize their special one was always in front of each of them. It would be a good idea to read the first three books of this series, The Cowboy and The Dom, but one could say it isn't required as this is a standalone story about two great guys. For the ARC I received I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
3.5 stars.. A great start as with all this series so far. Tommy and Sammy are funny and Bowie and Gabe are hot together once they reignite the sheets. A story with Bowie making his life after service and fitting in somewhere. Gabe was a Dom without his Boy and had feelings for Bowie. Could he have Sammy's brother in a relationship without mucking up and hurting his freinds. The story was a ""slow romance"" for the first half with sex scenes thrown in.. I didnt feel the connection between these two and especially them being Dom and Sub. The book was not as good as the others in the series, by the halfway point i wanted something to happen to keep reading and dare i say not get bored with it. About the 70% mark things start happening.. An okay book but not the best one for the series. If you are looking for a light BDSM slow romance book this is it for a read.
Gabriel aka Angel was an ex-military field medic and loved good days especially if it had a beer at the end at Mike's bar. When Sammy gets bad news that his bro was injured in the war. Bowie 34 was now home and wanting to escape his parent's farm and see Sammy.
This is the romance between two characters I love from The Cowboy and the Dom, a terrific 3-book series. Gabriel aka Angel is a close friend to Sam and Thomas, the couple from that series. Bowie is Sam's older brother. Both Angel and Bowie are military veterans, and they share a sweet and intense connection and understanding of each other. I have to sigh when Bowie calls Angel his Bear. I love Bowie's quiet and complete trust of the other man. Gabriel makes me worry occasionally, but he is good and caring. He sometimes gets overwhelmed with the feelings he and Bowie share so quickly. I love this story, and I care about this couple. Their road to a settled happiness isn't always smooth, but there is satisfaction in my heart for the effort both Bowie and Angel put into making things work. Little brother Sam and his man Thomas are supportive and sweet. I am glad these men are family. While this one was less stressful than Sam and Thomas' books, with no murderer on the loose, it still helpd my interenst from page one. I recommend all four connected books, and I look forward to these authors working together again. They write engrossing stories, and this is a great example.
I was really looking forward to Bowie's and Angel's story and on most levels this book didn't disappoint. Angel is a pretty straight forward guy - what you see is what you get - but Bowie is more of an enigma. The injured soldier doesn't give much about himself except basics. They met shortly a year and a half ago and the attraction is still there, but they barely know each other. Angel is a dom who gave up on searching for a sub who would meet his needs a long time ago. But is Bowie submissive at all? Not on a first or even a second glance. As the tentative and fragile relationship develops Angel is more and more determined to bring real Bowie out to the surface. I actually loved the slow emotional built, but I couldn't escape the feeling that there was a few bed scenes there that could be easily left out. Not much angst here either, despite many opportunities to work in that direction. It would definitely add a lot of depth to the story. Despite these reservations I enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to read more from these authors.
"The Soldier and the Angel" is a perfect companion book after reading "The Cowboy and the Dom" series. Bowie and Angel, who appear semi-regularly in the first three books, now have their own romance. These two alpha males are short on communication skills at times and the book is written in what feels like an authentic style for these two. Angel is a Dom who hasn't had a submissive in quite some time, while Bowie has submissive tendencies, but is unlikely to follow down the traditional D/s path. It feels like the two men had never expected to find a life-long love and it took them some time to figure it all out. My only issue is with the current book synopsis on Amazon. Part of the description mentions plot lines that occur 70% into the book, which just feels like a spoiler at that point. It took a little enjoyment out of discovering the book. However, the feel of this book is much lighter than the very tough situations in "The Cowboy and the Dom" series. Highly enjoyable read!
I love this book! I have been intrigued by Angel since the first book in The Cowboy and the Dom series and I am so happy that he and Bowie finally have their chance at a HEA. I also love that Sammy and Tommy play a fairly large role in this book and that we get to see how well they are doing. Bowie and Angel are both amazing men who deserve a beautiful life together but they have a few obstacles to deal with including a lack of confidence when it comes to their relationship and forgetting how important it is for them to communicate effectively. They have smoking hot chemistry, a strong bond and they just enjoy being together. They both have a lot to learn about each other and I love how their relationship develops. This is a well written, sweet, super sexy, fun, emotional and engaging story.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I'm so glad that Bowie and Angel got their story!! They're perfect for each other. To really appreciate this book you need to read The Cowboy and the Dom series, which is absolutely no hardship because they're such good books. You can read it without them, but it won't be as satisfying an experience. So much of who Bowie and Angel are is wrapped up in those three books, which tell Tommy and Sammy's story. The BDSM in this book takes a while to make an appearance, but when it does, it's stellar. I love this world, these characters, and the rhythm of Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga's writing. As a Texan, it feels like home even in NYC. Also, I'm hoping that there's either one more or a spinoff with a couple of the secondary characters.
So many things I'd love to say about this book but don't want to ruin it for anyone. Just know this, the authors did a fantastic job telling Bowie and Gabe's story. I could envision as I read. A lot of good, hot times were had by these two but also they had a connection that stood out. Their hot times kept getting hotter as their connection and relationship grew. Sure they had to work through a few things but who doesn't? Loved visiting with Tommy and Sammy too! So sit back, relax and enjoy this book, I promise you , you will! Great story and a must read in my book. I received an Advanced Readers Copy and I am giving my honest review. 💋💋💋💋💋
I loved the original series and was so excited to see that a story for Gabe and Bowie was written. We got to meet the two in the prior story and had a hint that something a little more was going on between the two. Some time has passed and an accident brings these to veterans back together. There relationship picks up pretty quickly but for two rough and tumble guys, communication is definitely not a strong suit. There is a very small amount of D/s in their relationship but enough to add some structure to their relationship. I enjoyed their journey to get to a HEA. Although this is a side story, you don't need to have read the other series for this story to be enjoyed.
I wasn't sure how well these two characters would go together. Yeah, we had hints that they would in the main series, but I still wasn't sure how it would happen.
The authors made these two characters believable. They are fully developed and I love how they play off each other. I also actually enjoyed how they feed off each other, when things go bad, they really go bad.
I recommend reading the main series first, just to have a sense of who people and places are, but this could be read as standalone.
Sweet, sexy, romance between two hot alpha males. Bowie was medically discharged after being hurt on a tour of duty and couldn't handled being at home with his parents, so he moved to New York live with his brother Sammy and Tommy. Angel is Sammy's best friend, a paramedic, a doesn't believe in relationships until he met Bowie. There's misunderstanding, not communicating, some funny moments, BDM, and sexy times are hot. The book is told from both points of views and I hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Soldier and an Angel is the 4th Pom in the series and I suggest you read the first three first even though this one is Gabriel and. Roadies story. I like that there are two bears as a couple, both strong . I liked the progression of the relationship as well and all of the characters. You get more Sammy and Tommy too which is good but if you haven’t read the first three you might get lost a little. There is a lot of hot sex too. If you like veterans, motorcycle riders, graphic sex, paramedics, friends to lovers, and hot man-sex this is for you.
I’ve been impatiently waiting for Bowie’s story and this didn’t disappoint, Jodi knows how to captivate her readers, words flowed and great to see Sam and Thomas again. So many emotions throughout the plot I laughed and cried and the intimate, hot, sensual scenes between Bowie and Gabe made my screen sizzle. All I will say is WOW.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I absolutely recommend this book.
The Soldier and the Angel Bowie was wounded in Afghanistan and has come home to recover. He comes for a visit to see his brother Sam where he meets Gabriel again. Bow and Gabriel had had a one-night stand. They have an instant attraction to one another. This was a good story full of emotion. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
This is a second chance story with some long-distance loving in it. It’s sweet and has plenty of heat, characters from the previous series The cowboy and the Dom make cameo appearances.
This standalone, stands out it is a very well written D/s story, Bowie and Angel are complex characters who have the chance to shine in their story, finding that they need each other to find peace and home. I highly enjoyed it and would recommend it.
What a beautiful, grab-you-by-the-feels, fantastic, poignant, amazing, tug-at-your-heartstrings, heartbreaking yet hopeful, bittersweet, smoking hot, emotionally charged, incredible, intriguing, and totally awesome tale. Gabe and Bowie were so perfect for each other, but the journey to their HEA ending was ANYTHING but smooth. This marvelous gem had me hooked from beginning to end, and I would recommend getting it for yourself.
OMG!! This book was steamy and wonderful!! I really enjoyed Angel in the other books and was happy to get to read his story. Bowie was a mystery. When they first meet, I was hoping they would end up together. Their journey to be together wasn’t easy. They just needed to learn to tell each other how they feel. For these two, that’s easier said than done. I hope there will be another book about these too. Highly Recommend!!
I loved The Soldier and the Angel. I liked that it’s a sequel to The Cowboy and the Dom series and we get to revisit Sammy & Tommy too. I love Bowie and Gabe, they are such interesting, great men. I like that their Dom and sub relationship is subtle and slow and caring. The whole book was great, hot, sexy, fun and full of interesting characters. I definitely recommend this book.
Bowie, the older brother, is injured while serving in the military and comes to visit his brother while recuperating. He meets Angel again and their attraction has not waned. The story of Bowie and Angel is emotional and sweet. Once they learn to communicate their story comes full circle. Love this series A dom, a Cowboy, a Soldier and an Angel oh my!
