Colt never wanted the job of Alpha. Turned out, he was right.
In fact, he should've run the first chance he got to escape the Providence Kinship, but that's all water under the bridge now. The schism between his human and ghoul lives grows wider each day as his boyfriend gets closer to the truth. Then there's the new and confusing tension between him and Ronnie--the son of his most trusted advisors--who is completely off-limits for obvious reasons.
When several children with strange connections to Colt's past go missing, the primary suspect is a variant ghoul even the Council fears. One who isn't supposed to exist at all.
This is the second book in the Colt Jager series, and shouldn't be read as a standalone as it continues plot points from the original book.
Joel Abernathy, also writing as L.C. Davis, is a trans author of MM romance. He enjoys writing dark and emotional romance about men loving men in all genres.
I read book one when it was under the pen name Kat Bellamy. Waited forever for the sequel and I’m sad to say I’m disappointed. This book completely made the previous story told fall apart. I usually stay away from Abernathy books cos the author tends to write on the darker side of what I like but having read the first I thought hey, why not?
[I received a digital copy from the author for an honest review] The Alpha is the second book in the Colt Jager series by Joel Abernathy. This is an urban paranormal fantasy series that can only be enjoyed by reading them in order. {{Trigger Warning : Violence, discussion of past sexual assault}}
Since the ghoul world and most of its workings are explained to us in book one it was much easier for me to really get into the book right from the start. Unlike in the first book Colt didn't have to grow on me because I was already invested and was excited to see how he would handle being Alpha. There is also way less Jason, which for me was a huge plus, and he was still annoying when he was on page. "No matter how hard he tried to retain his humanity, he was a monster. Just like them."
Now let me gush about my Robbie 😍 I adored him in the first book, and we get so much more of him in this one. We even get his POV as Robbie struggles with his traumatic past and discovering he's not the average ghoul he thought he was. Your heart breaks along with him as you witness his longing for Colt that he thinks he'll never actually have. His character arc was my favorite part of this book. "It had taken almost losing Ronnie to realize just how much Colt's world and heart he occupied."
The Alpha continues to be a gritty violent urban fantasy. This one introduces us to new variants of ghouls and keeps you guessing who Colt can actually trust in his new reality based on lies and half-truths. And that ending!!! ugh I need book 3 now and all the angst, heartache and violence I know it's going to bring with it.
Ugh. It had such promise and then ended up in this crazy mess. Joel, you keep sucking me in on the first great book and then it gets worse with each one after ):
I started out this book hoping that Jason and Colt would be able to find some way to be together - and I think that I ended it hoping that Colt gets to eat Jason. Almost every single choice that Jason made in this book was selfish - he had a job that he couldn’t reveal things about, and yet Colt wasn’t allowed to have any secrets; he was curious about things, but after being warned that there would be horrific consequences, he chose to ignore everything because no one but him could possibly know what’s best. This book showed that he is simply a small, hateful, vindictive little man who has to throw the biggest tantrum to get the attention he feels is his right. I almost hope that he is left alone, but that he has to witness the effect that his stupidity has on everyone else’s life that he’s pretty much guaranteed to have destroyed - and that he is made acutely aware of all of the death his selfish petty choices have caused, all in the name of “revealing the truth”.
Interestingly enough, Jason doesn’t actually figure very prominently in this story. Colt is learning how to be the Alpha of Rhode Island and is learning that it truly is lonely at the top. Ronnie experiences several emotional roller coasters throughout this book, and I hope that he allows both Colt and his parents to support him as he figures things out. He certainly spent enough of this book telling Colt that he wasn’t alone in facing all of the crap involving the rogue ghoul - I will be disappointed in him if he chooses to run away in the next book.
This is an awesomely gruesome continuation of the Colt Jager series. Make no mistake, this book/series is not a romantic suspense/horror story. No, this is a brutal, violence and gore filled, suspenseful thriller with a few romantic tendencies.
The author once again brings us to a world where ghouls walk among humans and have been enjoying their flesh for times long past. However, now that Colt has taken over as the Providence Kinship Alpha, he's changing the rules, and the counsel is not happy. Evelyn is still pulling the strings behind the scenes for the most part, but Colt has more important things on his plate... Like children vanishing from his territory.
Apparently, someone from Colt's bio family has come calling, but the games he plays are terrible and unknown. His kind don't usually get observed, so every move is a twist, and every attack unexpected. He's playing with people who mean something to Colt, which validates the idea that he should stay away.
I was so happy to hear Ronnie's voice in this book! I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the young man, but geez, he goes through he|| in this story. He plays an integral role in the action and danger in The Alpha. Our little vegan introvert is going to be a big part of this series, or at least I hope so. Things were starting to look up for just a moment before the author shattered my hopes and dreams. I'm just hoping he makes it better in the next book.
In the end, we're left with an uncertain future as Jason (I never liked him) shows his true colors. The future of not just our circle of characters, but all ghouls and monsters of Providence Kinship is in danger. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book!
Happy reading!
I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest opinion.
The book was okay. The writing was pretty good but I noticed some errors like sentences and passages being repeated. To me personally I was a little frustrated with a lot of the characters in this books but that’s a me thing
This book left me feeling disappointed, a bit sad and a whole lot uncomfortable. I've read books where the MC is initially in a relationship with someone but slowly falls in love with the other MC but in all those books you just know who is supposed to end up with whom. The entire first book was about Colt's unbreakable, deep love for Jason and somewhere in the middle of the second book the author changed their mind and out of nowhere Jason got kicked out to be replaced by Ronnie. The boy who Colt didn't just call family but also brother. The boy who we kept being reminded was just a kid and suddenly became a 'man' right before sex and the went back to being a boy. That was beyond uncomfortable to read about.
The relationship with Jason was broken in such a horrible way that I'm still feeling the jagged edges. The memory erasing was too convenient and it didn't serve Peter in any way. And the reason for it isn't even worth being called out as convenient - "to fuck with Colt". SMH.
Imo, the story started falling apart right after the kidnapping when Colt was supposed to come clean to Jason but changed his mind. It just went in random directions with no rhyme or reason and suddenly at the end Jason is a villain. What?
JA better put this right in the next one. Ronnie is lovely and all but he deserves his own romance with his own MC in his own book. Not as some usurper who took Jason's book and made Jason a villain to justify it.
This book is the second one in the series. I highly recommend you read the first one before diving in to The Alpha.
Overall, the story was fantastic. It's an unusual story and not for the faint of heart. So if you don't like gore, violence or death, this may not be for you. However, if you like unusual settings, different dynamics and imperfect characters, I highly recommend it.
The second book delves more into Colt's role as the new Alpha of the Ghoul population, his reluctant involvement of the DA's office, secrets and shifting alliances, a great villain and adding complexity to the overall story. Where it leaves me a bit disappointed is the character of Jason, his best friend and love of his life. I do wish that this relationship between Colt and Jason had been more fleshed out. Just like the first book, Jason needed more. More background, more time on the page. His motivations, his dreams, his frustrations. The author hints at the challenges of Colt keeping secrets but never really delves in deeply from Jason's POV. And since this is a vital part of the story, it just needed to be more important.
As for his growing love for Ronnie, it just felt very abrupt. Although I do have to say, Ronnie is quickly becoming one of my favorites because of his snark!
Overall, I love the author (he is an automatic buy for me) and highly recommend the series.

This was another fantastic initiative story that I'm eagerly waiting to find out more. I liked colt better in this one, we got to see him vulnerable and protective and to explore different avenues. Ronnie is perhaps one of my favourite characters, I love his snarkiness and he more than a match for colt and levels him out. This plot kept exposing secrets both Colts and ronnies and one's where I could of happily offed a few of these character that were revealed to be less than stellar. The author kept me on my toes especially with the newish love interest so we shall see how that goes. I liked that we had ronnies point of view and you got more from his character on how his character was built. Once I started this book it was hard to put down once I started and it's near a five but for the fact I would of liked a little bit more of an reaction once a certain character got a first hand look on what a ghoul could be like when your the buffet. But this was a well written interesting story that is keeping me on my toes, roll on the next please😀 I received this book by the author and this is my honest opinion
Still don't like Jason and still think he was just placed as a love to Colt so he could become what he has. After all ,the book lacks the monster hunters all these books seem to have. Was hoping it would go in a different way but it didn't. Glad Ronnie is in this and loves Colt fully and just wish Colt saw Jason for what he was. Jason never changed he was always the guy that tried to mold Colt into what he wanted. Always would have given less and expected more from Colt. Still waiting on Evelyn to get hers in some way. Do hate the way she thinks because she is conniving and always sticking a knife into someone's back, that she is the smartest person in the room. And how she puts down Colt, because she knows he's more powerful than her and needs him to not know it. Can't wait till Colt figures he's the whole ghouls hope and that the Council is a do as I say not as I do. I hope this goes in the line i want it 2 ..we'll see. Has kept me interested .
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Colt is back as the new alpha of the area, only now with new rules for the ghoul cummituny. Colt is fighting battles at every turn, a new threat is in Rhode island between Evelyn and the new creatures from old Colt is missing his old life like never before when Jason and Ronny become the focus point to get to him. My heart breaks for Colt as he does things to protect the man he loves, even when it's the right thing at the time. Jason is in danger of multiple threats while looking in to missing children, can Colt and Andrew curb his motivation of self-destruction. Poor Ronny won't come out unscathed by his families lies after a truth comes out about Colts real family, Ronny is dealing with twisted up emotions and a new but deadly awakening coming.
The plot of The Alpha picks up where Goulish left off, so that must be read first.
This book was awesome in so many ways. There were a lot of twists and turns, so many suspenseful moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. Colt's position as the alpha turned his every move into a tactical maneuver, his every word into a political landmine. Ad to it the people around him with their own agendas, and this story was a tension filled thriller of the best kind. Whenever I was convinced that I had someone or a situation well figured out, I was always surprised by what really happened.
Together with its ability to catch me off guard, I absolutely loved that this book wasn't the usual shifter romance. It was gore, violence and intrigue. But it was also family and sweetness, particularly thanks to Ronnie.
I loved it and I can't wait to see what happens next.
More manipulation, power struggles, revenge greed, jealousy, and ghouls galore. What an amazing magical world this one is set in. It's terrifying and awesome at the same time. The deeper I got into this story the more I felt like I had to have more and couldn't stop reading. It was like a compulsion and I was driven to it. The lies and deception made my heart so sad, but thankfully love won "partially". Even monsters and ghouls deserve love. My blood ran cold for Jason and my soul is dead. This can't be the way it ends-cliffy-huge cliffy!!!! I'm lost in a void and bawling my eyes out until the next book??? Mercy???

I loved reading The Alpha. It's the second book in the Colt Jager series. There are so many twists and turns in this book. At the end of the first book I was hoping that Colt and Jason would find some way to be together, by the end of the book I'm now hoping for Colt and Ronnie to be together and for Jason to be eaten by a ghoul. I like the idea of Colt and Ronnie being together more. Ronnie's a much better fit for the Kinship Alpha. But we will see if it goes anywhere. The book did end in a cliffhanger so I eagerly await the next book to see what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
The Alpha by Joel Abernathy is the second book in the Colt Jagger Novel series. This is a paranormal Urban fantasy story with M/M romantic tones thrown in over the continuing series. The series focuses on the same main character maneuvering a new existence and future. I found the Characters intriguing, and the story entertaining and attention keeping.... filed with action, violence, suspence and a very well written storyline. It ends in a mild cliffhanger type of situation that just built my anticipation for more.
Just wow! Such an excellent second book. If you’re looking for sweet and fluffy this isn’t for you. If you’re looking for gritty and gruesome? You’ve found your read. I’m loving the direction we’re heading and absolutely love Ronnie. A great way to spend the weekend?
The book was great, I love the fact that Colt ended up with Ronnie since in the first book his relationship with Jason seemed so distant, without connection, without love, without anything. There are few authors who change your love interest, I'm desperate to know when the third book will be released, without a doubt you are my favorite romance writer MM

Now this is an amazing continuation of this series. This world that Joel Abernathy has created is just so amazing. This is an action packed story with violence, and suspense. I just couldn't stop reading and I absolutely can't wait for the next book.
I really like this book and things have definitely gotten more intense then the first. I feel so bad for Jason and Ronnie this book. Honestly Colt annoyed me so much this book , dude stop being swishing swashy.
this was a horrifying story.. it was amazing and interesting.. fast paced and curious.. and just.. omg.. this is not a romance story at all so if you think it is.. you might want to leave now haha.. it was wonderful and kept me very interested. i loved it
I didn t read the first book and I m glad bc I m not a fan of slow burn and the main couple just got together here. It was interesting and it made me want to see what s next for Ronnie and Colt.
I love every little thing about this book, I love the character development of Ronnie and Colt and I need more, much more, I'm dying here for the next book.
This is the second book in :The Colt Jager Novel's
This novel was a rollercoaster ride so much happened but there still so much for Colt to uncover . This book was so emotional😥 first we find out that Colt's mother was like a Sister to Susan and that Susan and Stan had a good idea just who Colt was all along . Than we meet Colt's twin Peter is on a revenge spree for all the people that had anything to do with his and Colts mothers murder and that Peter is some kind of variant that has killed hundreds of children . Than there Jason whom Colts has finally broken up with to keep him safe but this goes horribly wrong and now Jason has become Colt and his people's worse enemy threatening to expose them to the world . Even though Colt already told Jason what would happen if he doesn't stop digging Jason is about to find out that he should have let it go . Because Colt will not allow himself and the rest of the ghouls in the state that are under his card to be wiped out of existence by the council of they are exposed to the human world .Than there's Ronnie 😨 who's so conflicted and hurting so badly that even Colt's love can't help him so much has happened too him some pretty terrible things and Ronnie'sove for Colt is such a fragile thing . Ronnie 's predicament really got to me God what that bastard of an uncle did to him and him not able to tell even his parents just about broke my heart 😰 . And he's not the only one who had to deal with sexual abuse we find out whoever found Peter colt's brother after their mother was killed and the boy's got separated had also sexually abused him😢 . Poor Peter 😨had a terrible childhood while Colt had a relatively decent and happy childhood . And of course this is what shaped Peters life turning into a bitter hateful but very powerful ghoul out for blood on those that he felt had wronged him . My heart broke for just about everyone in this book for Jason who just want to know the truth about his brothers death he's also hurting from his and Colts bitter breakup . For Colt who has been put in this position were any false move could be the end of him and every ghoul in the state for Ronnie who has carried such a soul killing secret that it was literally killing him slowly . Also Ronnie's parents who has no idea what their child had to Indore all these years from his own uncle and his father's brother . And we can't forget Peter who from the very beginning was born with a death sentence just because of what he was born as . We are headed for a showdown between Colt and Jason and this is so sad 😢 I can't wait until the next book in this series .
