This represents the first time that Pirandello's Berecche and the War has been translated into the English Language. Pirandello's historical novella, set in the months preceding Italy's entry into the First World War, is amongst much else a highly individual contribution to war literature and historical fiction.

Luigi Pirandello; Agrigento (28 June 1867 – Rome 10 December 1936) was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet, and short story writer whose greatest contributions were his plays.

He was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his bold and ingenious revival of dramatic and scenic art"

Pirandello's works include novels, hundreds of short stories, and about 40 plays, some of which are written in Sicilian. Pirandello's tragic farces are often seen as forerunners of the Theatre of the Absurd.

Binnen de Novellen voor een jaar is Berecche en de oorlog het kortste deel, maar bevat het tegelijkertijd juist het langste verhaal, namelijk het titelverhaal. Een fantastisch, treurig maar zo menselijk, in de zin van humanistisch, deel in de reeks. Hoogtepunten zijn Cinci, over hoe grootse gebeurtenissen in het leven ons nogal eens als een spontane samenloop van omstandigheden overvallen, en over hoe de waarheid subjectief is, losjes gelieerd aan een objectieve werkelijkheid. Ook Berecche zelf is prachtig, een novelle over de oorlog, maar niet over grote gebeurtenissen, maar meer zijdelings; meer gaat het over de individuele ervaring, en hoe een oorlog het leven en de gesprekken binnen een dorp ver van de strijd beïnvloedt, door toenemende rancune en polarisatie. Als altijd in een schitterende schrijfstijl (mede door een uitstekende vertaling)

Attraverso l’umorismo e il progressivo slittamento dal tono satirico al tragico, Pirandello offre una riflessione amara sulla relatività della storia, sull’assurdità della guerra e sulla fragilità delle certezze umane. La lettura mi ha fatto immedesimare profondamente nel clima dell’epoca, tra illusioni ideologiche, tensioni familiari e smarrimento collettivo.

Questo libro mi ha di nuovo mostrato perché mi piace così tanto Pirandello. Lui ci riesce sempre a farti perdersi tra le pagine e lo fa addirittura con storie abbastanza corte come queste. Non mi sono piaciute tutte le storie al 100%, però quelle che sì, le amavo veramente.

Mi è piaciuto molto, mi sono innamorata dello stile di scrittura di Pirandello 🌸

E presentare l'inizio della Grande Guerra attraverso i problemi d'identità nazionale della generazione dei genitori di quest'epoca era veramente interessante
