Funny, Awkward, Sweet...sooo good.
Awkward's character is so relatable, funny and cute. There were chapters where I was literally rolling on the floor laughing, I haven't laughed like that since so long. (Specially the frog's chapter.) There were chapters where my heart just went aww and it could feel for Awkward. Extrovert's and Awkward's chemistry is cute, hot. I want more of them!! The drawings added so much more to her character. This book just made me so happy.
Looking forward to more of author's work.
(pls can we get a sequel to this book pls?)

Awkward is not the type of book that would be on my radar, but the author reached out to me requesting a review. The book description is spot on for this book.

This book is a collection of stories in the life of Awkward, a socially anxious seventeen-year-old with low self-esteem. Most of the stories revolve around these aspects of her personality, as told in the third-person. The grammar errors are mostly covered by this storytelling method as well, but a few still stood out.

If the description intrigues you, it is worth the quick read. It only took me an hour to finish.

Short. Sweet.

To borrow another *reviewer's very accurate reference, Awkward is like a Junie B. Jones if she were a 17 year-old. All short sentences and a simple, earnest narrator who meets the world head-on but discovers it rather obliquely. Which is to say, the book is charming, but unexpected--which is part of the charm?

The collection of chapters from the life of Awkward, some present-day, a few memories, include appropriately awkward illustrations. Kaur produces some other good punchlines as she builds her awkward character named Awkward. The chapters are easy and relatable with humor and the palatable kind of cringe here and there.

While the book is culturally India, the scenes and relationships translate. I have several friends I know would enjoy the swooning appearance of Extravert, while also nodding along to the awkwardness of the first boyfriend. The book is its most eloquent during the more intimate Awkward-Extravert interactions. Of the amusing interactions and character developments, I find the mother to be the most hilarious aspect of the story; it didn't hurt that my mind went to the way Lily Singh talks (and performs) her mother.

That conversational tone of the 'book description-er-disclaimer' is a good sampling of the whole book. And Awkward may actually be perfect for these days when our scattered attention spans and depressed spirits could use an effortless distraction.

Kaur is clever, and (the) Awkward works. A proper kind of cute-meet. I'd love to see this author paired up with a web-comic artist and weekly episode featuring Awkward and friends.

A short, easy, relatable book as we glimpse Awkward navigating her way through high school, boyfriends, and just everyday awkwardness that we all experience. Awkward has a way to reach out, grab your heartstrings, and relate with you no matter what

I strongly disagree with some of the reviews here (the reviews that state it is better suited for younger audiences). I'm 35 and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were moments where I laughed like crazy and I found Awkward's character to be super relatable and funny. It is a light hearted read which makes you laugh no matter your age.
Is it simple? -- Yes.
Is the language used easy?-- Yes.
But does that make it suitable for ONLY young audience? -- Heck NO!
This book will make you smile no matter your age. It's a light hearted, happy read.
It's super cute and funny and becomes even better when Extrovert's character is introduced.
Awkward and Extrovert together are just adorable, cute.
I just have one complain from this book, I just wish it was a bit longer.
I loved this book and it is definitely one of the best book for such times.
Having a bad day? -- Just check this book out, it will surely put a smile on your faces.

This book made me so happy!!! Geniunely Happy.
This book is funny and makes you laugh but there’s much more to it. It has a way of pulling your heartstrings and somehow make you happy.
Awkward’s character is awkward, cute, funny and relatable. The book is already so good but it gets even better once Extrovert’s character is introduced. I loved Awkward and Extrovert together. I just wish there was more of them.
I definitely recommend this book and this is one of the best books to read in such hard times.

Cute.

This was cute. However, when the author reached out, I was expecting a legitimate book. Not a half picture book half regular book. It is basically a Junie B Jones book but instead of a 6/7 year old the character is 17.

“... an awkward silence followed...”

Ok, so when I started this book I was very confused. The format on my Kindle was weird, the writing was very quirky and there were stick doodles on some pages. But as I read on, I found myself smiling and looking forward to the next story.

This book is a compilation of short stories about Awkward’s experiences in high school... and when I say short, I mean SHORT!!! It’s literally 100 pages or fewer and I read it in one sitting while eating my breakfast and it brightened up my whole morning! Everything about this book is quirky, from the stories, style of narration, the doodles on the chapters and the ebook’s formatting 😂 It was cute and lighthearted and most of all ... adorably AWKWARD!!!!

What I like most about this book is that it doesn’t promise anything more than what it is when you read the blurb!
I think sometimes book descriptions tend to oversell or embellish what the actual book is about. This one definitely doesn’t.

RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
RECOMMEND: To anyone looking for a cute, heartwarming, reaaallly light read.

Awkward
by Gurpreet Kaur
3/5⭐️

Each one of us is awkward. Some of us just know how to hide it better.

Meet seventeen years old Awkward; a sweet, a bit clumsy, hilarious at times girl with dreams of becoming a doctor but that spend more of her days hanging with her friends and worrying about boys and her love for chocolate.

I’m a big fan of indie authors and enjoy reading different genres far from my favourite ones, it’s really the best way to broaden your imagination.
While reading the story of Awkward the thought of it being a show on Netflix or a comic series hit me, I do think it would work as a graphic novel maybe as a series; following Awkward’s way into adulthood.

Awkward is a 17 year old girl trying to adapt to the world around her. Awkward has discussions with her friends, a crush, and her mother - all which end, well, awkwardly. This is a cute book of experiences most young girls go through that offers ways to feel good about yourself despite the awkwardness of growing up.

The author, Gurpreet Kaur, reached out to me on Instagram and asked me to review her book. I am very glad she did. This is a book I would offer to a young girl as a way to make her smile and see that things get better.

Gurpreet Kaur requested me to review her novel. This is a short, sweet novel written by a surprisingly perceptive 17 year old girl. Short and concise sentences with narration straight from Gurpreet’s thoughts. It brought me back to being in high school and just how *awkward* everything could be, how much more aware you were of your awkwardness. This is easily read in a short sitting. Very cute, keep writing!

I received a request to read and give an honest review by Gurpreet Kaur the author of “Awkward.” This is not a typical book I would read but it is a sweet book that will take you less than an hour to read.

Awkward is a 17 year old girl who goes through various situations in her life that are “awkward.” This book had me laughing throughout the book and feeling for Awkward when things went awry.

Awkward sets out throughout the book as anyone would to accomplish things with a positive outcome. For instance Awkward sets out to finally kiss her boyfriend and long story short he ends up going to the hospital and breaking up with her. In another situation Awkward ends up going to school in a frog custom made by her brother and sister that looks a bit crazy and poor Awkward had the wrong day and well it ends up quite hilarious.

We see Awkward navigating being 17 with friends, a breakup and meeting Extrovert. She is such a funny, smart and lovable character that you cheer for good things to come her way.

Verdict:

Ms Kaur really gets you to feel for her character “Awkward.” I did enjoy this book. It was a lighthearted read that gave me smile. I give this book 4/5 stars.

Awkward is... well, awkward. The book takes us through her daily awkward encounters from her disastrous first kiss to mistakenly showing up at school in fancy dress a month early. Awkward is so relatable in that we (or at least I) have all experienced some of these same awkward situations (hello, yes, awkward waving back at a stranger NOT waving at you). It is a short, fast read and I would love to read more of Awkward’s adventures. I think this would also make a great comic/web series. Thank you to the author for reaching out and getting this book on my radar!

A lighthearted and entertaining read, with amusing drawings throughout. Some of the stories were genuinely cringe-worthy but I think I would have found it much more relatable if I was younger and back at school.
I did like reading this book but personally I think it is suited for a younger audience than myself. This is definitely a book that my younger self would have enjoyed.

The main character, Awkward, is 17 years old and each chapter describes one of her awkward experiences. Some of them were too relatable! This book was super cute and cringey in a good way. The drawings also added a nice little touch. If you’re looking for a short, pick me up read between books, I recommend Awkward!

A Very Cute and Sincere Tale

I have read Gurpreet’s work before and she is a very talented writer. I particularly enjoyed Awkward because it beautifully communicates the feelings all of us have had during our teenage years and, if Truth be known, don’t really ever go away for the rest of our lives. We all have a little Awkward in us. It’s called Insecurity and it keeps us Humble. Much better than being an Arrogant A**hole!

Thank you, Gurpreet. That was fun! And to the rest of you, read her other books, I’m Done and Warriors. They’re very good too.

I must say it: Awkward is different from what I use to read, but it surprised me in many ways.
Awkward is a 17-year-old girl that struggles with self-confidence. This makes her clumsy and gets into many relatable situations (we've all been awkward at some point).

Awkward melted my heart and made laugh. She also made me feel her struggle and reminded me of some of my awkwardest moments.
I still have doubts about the book becoming one of my favourites, but that might be because I'm not used to this kind of book.
Sometimes I couldn´t help thinking "No, Awkward!", but it also made the book funnier.

Awkward is a short read that will make you have a good time while reminding you of your awkwardness.

Awkward is just a normal teen in India. Except she’s really awkward. And makes every situation she’s in awkward.

I’m not really a YA reader, but, when the author contacted me for a review and mentioned it was a comedy with plenty of awkwardness, I was intrigued. After looking into it, it looked really cute and I could already see awkward pieces of myself in Awkward, so I was more than happy to read this quick book!

The Characters: Cute and Awkward
The main character is Awkward, a seventeen-year-old student in India. She has the uncanny ability to make everything awkward, but still has so much heart and is always trying. She’s adorable and lovable, and truly epitomizes the awkwardness we all have in us.

Then there’s Extrovert. He’s kind of everything Awkward is not. He’s cool and good looking and everyone swoons over him. He felt like the stereotypical cool guy, but, underneath, is a heart of gold.

The Setting: India, But Really Anywhere
Since the storytelling in this book is quite different from a typical novel, there isn’t a real introduction to the setting or much about where it takes place other than mentions of school, Awkward’s home, a cemetery, a grocery store. Instead, the setting, India, came to life within the storytelling. It was there in how the characters behaved, in how events were celebrated. The story starts with Valentine’s Day, which turns out to be a week-long event in India. There’s also a wedding that somehow made me feel like I was there despite the incredible lack of in-depth details one would expect in books.

At the same time, even though I know it takes place in India, especially since it mentions India a few times, it also felt like it could be anywhere. That awkwardness is so normal in adolescence, the things that happen to high school students so universal, that it could have been any teen at any school in the world.

The Plot: Adorably Awkward
This is a cute, quick story that captures adolescence so well, especially for an awkward teenager. It’s quite a different sort of book as it’s all tell and practically no show and is told in brief chapters that focus on a single awkward moment in Awkward’s life. Still, it managed to tell a complete story. This is both Awkward’s awkward story and a beautiful, awkward love story.

I was surprised by how much I liked this story. It was short and sweet and incredibly concise. It struck right to the core, and absolutely softened my heart towards Awkward. As I mentioned YA is far from my preferred genre, but this was a really cute story that had only a bit of drama and a lot of heart. It was fun and I think many people can probably see at least a little bit of themselves in Awkward.

Overall: Sweet and Universal
For all the awkward and formerly awkward, there’s a good chance this book will speak to your heart. I don’t think I can say how cute it is enough. The love story was incredibly sweet, and I loved how funnily awkward Awkward was able to make just about every situation in her life. I loved that it didn’t focus too much on all the negatives of adolescence with things like peer pressure and ostracism, but instead focused on something universal and made it both relatable and funny. Overall, an excellent really quick read that managed to steal my heart.

A story about Awkward’s most awkward moments in her life. From her first kiss, dressing up as a frog at school, break-ups to her mother finding a packet of ‘strawberry candies’ in her bag, this book has something for everyone.

Before I began reading Awkward’s story I was already smiling at the disclaimer. It sets an amusing and lighthearted tone that is gently carried through the rest of the narrative.

This book is a light, short read and is perfect to dive into when you want to escape the reality of your own awkward life. Accompanied with stick figure drawings you can’t help but see the funny side to Awkward’s most embarrassingly awkward tales.

Awkward is an extremely likeable character because she’s real, she’s human. She’s not perfect and she makes mistakes. You can strongly relate because there are times when we ourselves end up in an awkward situation. It’s natural. She doesn’t understand why these things happen to her and feels like everyone is laughing at her. Her mother tells her “Making other people laugh is a gift. Not everybody is capable of making other people laugh. You made them laugh. You are special, you should be proud of yourself” At the time she sees it as everyone seeing her as a joker, something to be ashamed of. It takes her a while but she soon realises that making people smile and laugh is a happy, beautiful thing. It’s a positive, uplifting message that encourages us to all embrace our own awkwardness. We should never be ashamed of it. Never.

The reader is also treated to the start of a little romance in this book when Awkward meets Extrovert. At first she assumes he doesn’t like her and convinces herself she doesn’t like him. But he continues to playfully tease her and they soon become friends. As you watch the relationship blossom you are kept on tenterhooks whether they will or won’t end up together. You wait with baited breath as you watch the pair skirt around the obvious awkwardness. It reminded me of watching a rom-com with the misunderstandings, awkward situations and denial of clear feelings for each other. Most enjoyble.

I give Awkward By Gurpreet Kaur a Three out of Five paw rating.

Witty and full of relatable anecdotes this book will make you giggle and not feel completely alone in your own awkwardness. I laughed, and cringed at Awkward’s misfortunes. The Uber car ride story is definitely one I could see myself doing.

This was a lovely, light, quick read that you can jump into over a cup of tea and enjoy many a giggle at Awkward’s tales.

You know what's awkward? This book. But not only the book, the number of times readers will find themselves reading the word – or name – "awkward", as it is used as every part of speech in this text.

The author, Gurpreet Kaur, reached out to me and asked me to review her book. And as many others have written, it is a cute and sweet text, one riddled with moments of embarrassing humor and coming-of-age experiences. For this reason, it is incredibly relatable at nearly all times for nearly all readers. It doesn't matter if you're younger or older, everyone can likely find numerous chapters in this book to relate to where they can picture themself doing something awkward in high school – or at other times in their lives, for that matter.

A few small and nit-picky things about this book. While it is cute and a fun, quick read, it does feel as though it could have benefitted from an additional round or two of editing. This is a fault of mine, in that I am a teacher and often notice even the smallest of mistakes, but there were numerous ones throughout this text and it often took me out of what should have been a humorous moment, unfortunately. Additionally, I was unable to get this Kindle-edition on my actual Kindle, as it was only available on specific Kindle platforms, for some reason. Because of this, I ended up reading it off of my phone, which isn't the most pleasant of experiences, but it still worked. Just something to keep in mind before purchasing.

Overall, this was a cute, light-hearted read. It's not one that I would typically pick up, and is not a genre I would even gravitate toward, but I'd recommend it to those who are looking for a quick book to make you smile – especially since it's one of the few affordable ones!

Awkward is the story of a girl named Awkward. She’s a teenager who is also very awkward and her personality is shy. Due to misunderstandings, she gets herself into sticky situations quite often. Because Awkward is so insecure she is very self-conscious of herself all the time. Throughout the book she struggles on her journey to become a more confident person. She wishes that people would stop treating her like her namesake.

This book is set at very fast paced rate and is easy to read in one sitting. The chapters are very short and a little bit choppy. My only complaint was that the writing was a bit jumbled at times because it read like a personal diary. Some of the sentences had a tendency to run on at times and I felt the flow was not smooth. While reading the novel, the reader was more so in Awkward’s head hearing her thoughts at a constant speed rather than an overall narrative .Sometimes I wasn’t sure if things were happening in story or if in Awkward’s head and it was a bit confusing.

All in all, this was a cute little short story. It it felt like it was intended for a much younger audience because of the writing style, while the content was suited for YA audiences. I think if Awkward’s character was a little more fleshed out and we got to learn more about the background of the stories and other featured characters it would add to the story as a whole.

Awkwardly good!

This book was definitely awkward!
When I first opened it I didn’t have high expectations. It thought it’s going to be just some boring kid’s book with awkward drawings. I wasn’t sure if I want to spend my 2 hours reading it (the author said it’s only this short). But because I’m not the person that gives up easily I decided to continue reading.
I mentioned at the beginning that I didn’t have high expectations, I couldn’t be more wrong. 5 minutes into the book and I was totally hooked.
I wanted more and more of awkward situations and awkward silence in the life of a main character. She”s a 17 years old Indian girl who seems to be born with the “awkwardness gene”. Everything about her is just awkward. And guess what? Her name is Awkward too!
The story was really funny. I managed to spit my tea couple of times. I loved the bit of crazy romance going on in Awkward’s life.
I think the chapter about shopping for a chocolate was my favourite. It was so emotional for me. Probably because chocolate is my best thing in life. I just felt the girl’s pain.
It took me about an hour to read the whole story and I was disappointed it ended. It was really light and easy read but so relatable!
I wouldn’t normally reach for this type of book bit this time I’m glad I did.

Disclaimer: The author contacted me to request I read and review this book. This in no way influences my opinion or review!

Overall, 3.5*

Awkward is a collection of anecdotes where ‘awkwardness’ and social anxiety is personified as the character ‘Awkward’. She is immensely funny to read, and horrifyingly relatable.
Each chapter shows a different scenario in which Awkward is inevitably doomed by her awkwardness. These range from fancy dress on the wrong day, accidentally almost killing her boyfriend in a kiss gone wrong, and simply the inability to converse with people without significant panic.

Not only is the book true and entertaining, it also normalises social anxiety and ‘awkwardness’ in a way that makes you feel less awkward about being so awkward.

While I did enjoy reading this, it felt a little repetitive at times and the writing was slightly annoying. However, this is likely just my impatience with YA, teenage-centric voices.

Illustrations: Again, it’s super weird for me to read anything with pictures. But my god these pictures were hilariously awful. I think that was the point? In a way it took away the professionalism of the book and made it a little school-projecty, but I suppose that is down to personal taste.

A sweet little read. Thank you for sending it my way!

This is a book about A 17 year old who is very awkward, and her name is Awkward.

I was approached by Gurpreet Kaur on Instagram with request to read and review her book. She informed me that it was available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. As I already have Kindle Unlimited I agreed to read and review. However, if not for that I would have declined.

I am happy to take requests on books to read and review, but if you are an author soliciting reviews (which is fine), you need to have a free copy in the form of a pdf or doc.

Now, the story is a little bit cute in places and it would probably make a nice read for 12 year old girls, if the language was tidied up and made a little more appropriate. In fact, a book about an awkward person who is also named Awkward feels like something that should be aimed at a much younger readership. This affected my score because the book is not mature enough for readers the same age as the character or older, and it's not suitable for a younger audience.

My next issue is that the writing is bad in a way that makes me believe that the book was originally not written in English and it's been badly translated without making sure that it still makes sense in English. I bet it reads clearer in it's original language. However, this does take points away from my score.

My biggest issue with the book was that I had to read it on the Kindle app on my phone. I have a Kindle Paperwhite and when I tried to download this book onto it, I got a pop up informing me that the book is not compatible with my device. An e-book not compatible with a Kindle? Not acceptable! This also affected my score.

The book is not all bad. I finished it and gave it a 2-star rating. My advise to the author would be to have this edited, or re-edited by someone who speaks English fluently. To make it so that the English makes sense all the way through, and to tidy it up so that it is suitable for a younger audience. Finally, do what ever you need to, in order for this book to be compatible with Kindle devices.

3.5 out of five stars

This was such a cute book. It was a great pick me up to read first thing this morning! Multiple times I caught myself smiling while reading. Each chapter is a different awkward story from Awkward's life, and multiple pages have doodles that made the story fly by. The chapters are short, so if you are busy or in a rush this is a great book to read!

The book definitely needs some editing, but that didn't really take away from the story. I liked that a lot of the awkward situations are situations we have all been in (in some form or another). I liked the overall message of embracing the awkwardness. The Indian representation was exactly what I like to see in a book, as we got to see different aspects of the culture such as weddings, and love week. There was a negative connotation of food and weight. There is one specific incident where the author talks about how cheese and chocolate don't help Awkward's weight. This is extremely detrimental, and as a society we need to adapt to the food is energy stigma vs the food is weight gain stigma.

Overall the book was cute, and I will probably read more from the author in the future.

I was contacted by the author to read and review her book, Awkward.
The book is, well, awkward, but relatable and even amusing in a few instances. We’ve all had moments in our lives that have made us cringe, and here, the author provides an account of a 17 year old’s insecurities and embarrassing moments in this quick read.

Written in a third person point of view, it reads as if the character, Awkward, is actually narrating the story, but in the third person. The point of view immediately struck a wrong chord and I wonder if perhaps switching between first and 3rd throughout the vignettes of stories may have served the purpose, candor and attempt at comedy with greater success. I struggled getting past the first few pages with the the repetitive use of the word, “awkward.” I get it, it’s the character’s name and what the book centers around, but it was overboard for my liking, to the extent that my mind began shouting, “We get it! It’s awkward!”

Overall, it has some cute and quirky anecdotes. I think the delivery of these stories and real-life musings may be better suited in a series of podcasts or Vlogs rather than the printed page.
