While Worth the Candle is broken up into separate books, it follows a continuous storyline. At this point it’s the longest unbroken narrative I’ve ever read in a single work. I’m starting here because this review is going to be more critical than the reviews of the first seven books, and I think the nature of its construction carries part of the blame for this book's issues.
Book eight is the Anglecynn arc, something that’s been teased and hinted at since book one. It starts with the emotional aftermath of living with the ramifications of the violation of one party member at the hands of another. This is well written and believable, but incredibly depressing & impossible to simply move on from. The nature of the story requires that though, and it rubbed me at least the wrong way.
There are multiple enemies at the gates during the Anglecynn arc & it's a bit distracting. It feels a bit like Spideman III, where the number of threats demands that each of the individual villains get shortchanged. One problem in particular had been hinted at several books ago and I dreaded it actually manifesting. It was ridiculous and intentionally unbelievable, and in my opinion greatly subtracted from my enjoyment.
This book also had a lot of fascinating moral dilemmas and commentary. I loved each of those and consider the inclusion of them to be a strength. Unfortunately I disagreed with a large percentage of the authors conclusions and feel that he inserted his own opinions on those of the characters. The final resolution to the book was also lacking for me. The main thrust of the plot had been built around this complicated political battle, it was engaging and I was greatly anticipating it’s resolution. When said resolution came it wasn’t political at all, it felt rushed and clunky in comparison to it’s build up.
The quality of the writing remains impeccable, the scope of the issues within feel authentic and reflective of the actual world. I don’t want this to come off as if I hated this book by any means. I’m hopeful that the author will take the narrative in a new direction with book nine.
