In this new addition to the award-winning BECNT series, respected New Testament scholar and biblical interpretation expert Gene Green offers a substantive yet highly accessible commentary on the books of Jude and 2 Peter. With extensive research and thoughtful chapter-by-chapter exegesis, Green leads readers through the sociological, historical, and theological aspects of these New Testament books. As with all BECNT volumes, "Jude and 2 Peter "features the author's detailed interaction with the Greek text. This commentary admirably achieves the dual aims of the series--academic sophistication and pastoral sensitivity and accessibility--making it a useful tool for pastors, church leaders, students, and teachers. The user-friendly design includes shaded chapter introductions summarizing the key themes of each thought unit.
Gene L. Green (Ph.D., University of Aberdeen) is professor of New Testament at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. He has written commentaries on 2 Peter and Jude (Baker Exegetical series) and the Letters to the Thessalonians (Pillar series).
Magnificent. Green has a special skill in being thorough yet economic with his words. He also excels at bringing in cultural context to define terms Jude uses. Good discussion in the introduction about Jude's use of non-canonical sources. Highest recommendation.
Used this commentary to supplement our weekly College Ministry Bible Study. It’s a balanced and informative commentary that I’ll consult for years to come.
This is a very solid commentary on Jude and 2 Peter. Green deals a lot with the grammar of the two books and at least and introductory knowledge of Greek is needed in order to read this commentary. Green also does a great job discussing the relationship between Jude and 2 Peter (especially in his introduction to 2 Peter). He also clearly and soundly defends the fact that 2 Peter was indeed a first century book written by Peter and not a second or third century Gnostic epistle.
Of all of the commentaries on Jude that I reviewed, I found Green's outline of the book to be the most helpful. In addition this, Green has a way of capturing a text in a very catchy and concise way. Though not without flaws, I strongly recommend this commentary for those who wish to work through the book of Jude.
