Rate this book
Tony De Luca is a simple guy. He works for his uncle’s Brooklyn-based construction firm. And he knows from experience that keeping his head down and doing his job is the best way to deal with the meddlesome family members he sees daily. They think he’s quiet and, maybe, a little awkward, but the truth is more complicated. Tony has a secret he isn’t ready or willing to share. He’s an expert at avoiding familial scrutiny. At least, he was until the sexy guitar player showed up.

Remy Nelson is a small-town, free-spirited guy looking for a new life in the big city. He stays busy by playing his instrument on a busy Manhattan street corner during the day and bartending at night. Remy is more interested in finding steady employment than a mate, but he can’t deny his attraction to the dreamy construction worker with soulful eyes, a kind heart, and a unique way with words.

Falling for Remy wasn’t what Tony expected, but he knows keeping him will require courage. And truth.

Two sweet novellas about the Nelson brothers who come from upstate NY to the City to find themselves and love finds them.

A Way with Words is about Tony & Remy. Tony is a member a large extended Italian family, which forms the nucleus of his work and social circle. One day he spots Remy busking in the park across from his current construction site and that's all she wrote. The love between Tony & Remy is palpable and believable. I love that this wasn't a GFY story. Remy is definitely out and Tony has known his whole life he's gay he just hasn't had the courage or incentive to come out to his family. Falling in love with Remy fixes that.

A Way With You After a failed relationship in his hometown Reeve Nelson, Remy's brother, come to NYC to make it in the cutthroat world of high end real estate. But sometimes what you think you want turns out not to be what you really want or what you need. And having Leo Rodrigues as your boss is also a wrench in well laid plans. I loved that Reeve was no pushover and that once he and Leo got together their communication was pretty open save one or two missteps which were corrected pretty quickly. I would've liked a little more about Leo but these stories are about the Nelson brothers and they're both adorable & good people.

3.5 stars rounded down because still no 1/2 stars here on GR and apparently today there's no search function here either...GR said I should go read a book...I think they underestimate me. I can find what I want without their search function...maybe they should go do their job and fix things...just sayin'

One book...two reviews...

A Way with Words and A Way with You by Lane Hayes consist of two separate stories both of with make reference to characters and/or element from Felice Stevens series ‘The Breakfast Club’ and truthfully the only reason that I was aware of this was the disclosure at the beginning of the audio book and while I can safely say I didn’t feel that I was missing out on anything in these stories for not having read that series. I am left wondering how if I’d read or listened to the Breakfast Club series…would I maybe have enjoyed ‘A Way with Words and A Way with You’ a bit more than I did, but it is what it is and I guess I’ll never know.

While I’ve given the audiobook an overall rating of 3.5 for the most part I found that I enjoyed ‘A Way with Words’ a bit more than ‘A Way with You’ and in fairness to both stories rather than do one big mashed up review of the audio book I’ve chosen to give each book their own mini review here so first of all lets start with what both stories have in common besides the author…

The narrator…Alexander Cendese. This audio book is only my third time listening to this particular narrator (or more accurately my 3rd & 4th) so he’s a relatively new to me narrator and as with my previous experiences overall I found this to be a good listening experience. The character voices were distinct and unique giving uniqueness and emotion to the characters and their situations. Mr. Cendese is a narrator that I would not hesitate to listen to in future and look forward to enjoying more audio books narrated by him.

Now about the books…

Garnering a solid 4 stars from me ‘A Way with Words’ was the first story in this duology and it in fact turned out to be my favorite. Tony De Luca is a down to earth guy, with a big Italian family to meddle in his life he flies under the radar as often as he can especially when it comes to his sexuality or at least that’s how he rolled until he met a sexy guitar player on a street corner when he was going for lunch one day.

Remy came from a small town looking for a new life in the big city. He plays guitar on a Manhattan street corner during the day and tends bar at night. He’s out and right now more concerned with a steady job than a steady man until he meets a certain sexy Italian construction worker whose kind heart, soulful eyes and uniquely interesting way with words starts him thinking about other things.

For me, Tony and Remy worked as a couple. They were both down to earth and I could so easily imagine them as real people. Their relationship developed as a friendship before becoming something more. Things between them felt genuine.

I especially liked that in his heart Tony knew his family…especially his mother would still be loving and supportive when he came out to them and that Remy’s family was also a loving and supportive family. So often stories have family members that are the total opposite of this and while more often than it should be this is a sad part of the real world. It is sometimes nice to read a story that reminds us that there are also good, loving and supportive families out there.

I think I maybe would have liked a tiny bit more story for Tony and Remy but all in all it was a sweet romance with a nice happy ending and made for an enjoyable summer vacation listen.

‘A Way with You’ is the second book in this audio excursion and I have to admit if I was rating just this story, then my rating would probably be 3 stars at best. Thankfully, Mr. Cendese was present to bolster the characters with his expressive and solid narration.

Reeve Nelson is struggling to be successful in the Manhattan real estate market. He’s willing to give it his all. After leaving his small town and an ex-who-doesn’t-want-to-be-his-ex, he’s determined not to go back. He’s also Remy’s brother (yes, this was one of the best things about him for me). Reeve’s boss is making this all particularly challenging for him. Reeve’s not afraid of a challenge but he’s also not afraid of walking away from things when they’re not right for him.

Leo Rodriguez has a reputation as a ruthless businessman and he’s proud of it. He’s worked hard to get where he is, and he’s done it on his own terms.

These two men should have worked for me but for some reason they fell a little short of the mark and the highlight of this story for the most part were the moments when Reeve interacted with his family… especially Remy and Tony.

At the end of it all though I was left with one story that I quite enjoyed and another that was ok both narrated by a narrated with the ability to enhance a story with is vocal skills.

Audio review:
Performance – 5
Story – 5 (A Way with Words)
Story – 4 (A Way with You)
Overall – 5

I really enjoyed these two relatively short novellas. I didn't read them when they were released as ebooks so I listened to the audiobook very intently. While I have several audiobooks in my library that Alexander Cendese has narrated, this is the first one I've listened to at this point. I enjoyed his performance. I think he did a great job with the accents and his pacing of the story was very good.

I've become an avid fan of Lane Hayes' writing over the last couple of years. Since I'm kind of a latecomer to her works I still have some catching up to do to read the books in her backlist. The two stories in this audiobook are about two brothers but each story really stands alone just fine.

I really loved A Way with Words, the first book in this bundle. Tony is really deep in the closet. He works in construction and he feels that it won't go well if he comes out; he's also afraid of what his family will think. He meets Remy who plays his guitar on a street corner near where Tony works. They strike up a friendship that soon turns into much more. Unfortunately, Tony's family keeps trying to fix him up with a very nice woman, who Tony actually likes – just not in that way.

This story really touched my heart. Remy is such a sweet and understanding man. When things happen that force Tony out of the closet, he's pretty upset about what happened.

A Way with You was good, too but it wasn't quite as much of a tender love story as A Way with Words. The story starts out as an office attraction but takes a pretty dramatic turn. Two strong personalities eventually find a way to their HEA.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I listened to the audiobooks so if I misspell names I'm doing my best, y'all!

First off, the audiobooks total out at about 5.5 hours, for both stories. I thought this might be too short, not enough time for the stories to develop, but I think they were both sufficient, if succinct.

The stories begin with A WAY WITH WORDS, where construction worker Tony De Luca finally admits that he's gay, because he falls hard for Remy Nelson, a bartender, busker and music teacher by trade. Tony narrates his story which is filled with a lot of angst over his closeted state. Tony is nearly 30 and his big and intrusive Italian family want his settled down and married ASAP. Tony's dad died a year ago, and his sudden loss has amped up the pressure Tony feels. And the guilt, because Tony knows he's gay, and is terrified his family will not accept him if he comes out. He works for and with family, and if they shun him, he'd be out of a job and a family in one go. He's nice to the ladies his family trots out to woo him, but he's never going to fall for any of them--and he's frustrated to be in this high-pressure situation. This only gets worse when Tony meets Remy playing in the park.

Remy is so light and airy compared to the dark De Luca's, and he's engaging both Tony's interest and emotions. The music really speaks to Tony, who often feels tongue-tied. He's a good Italian boy, though, and he knows that feeding a man well will pique his interest, so he starts bringing extra lunch to entice Remy to spend some time chatting when he's on his lunch break in the park. The more time they spend, the more Tony feels inadequate for not being honest with his family. When they keep pushing "Canoli Karen" on him, though he finally makes the stand hes feared for so long--and life gets only better from there.

Lots of sexytimes, and sweet and earnest conversation lead these two into making their way with and without words.

Remy's older brother Reeve has recently moved to Manhattan to build a new realty business. He'd been living with a woman for the past two years, a fellow realtor back in their small hometown in upstate New York, however she cheated on him, and he left for a new life, new enterprise. Reeve has been hired by a prestigious realty firm, but he's not really getting his bearings. His direct boss, Leo Rodriguez, is a heavyweight in NYC realty, having his own house shoe on local cable. He's also demanding, and wanting to expand the TV presence, which is something he wants Reeve to work on. And, it doesn't quite work out--their big office blow up ends in some NSFW sexytimes in Leo's office.

And Reeve looking for a new position.

Leo doess't want him to go, and he surely doesn't want him to get away. Leo's been attempting to hide his sexuality from his bigoted family for years--with some limited success, but now he's on his own and he's ready to live his truth. Would Reeve be the man who makes life a partnership?

This one moves a LITTLE faster than Remy and Tony's story, but we have a lot of Remy and Tony in it to grease the skids. Also, the boss-employee dynamic lends itself for physical before emotional entanglement. That said, it's clear the Reeve is crazy for Leo, and the feelings are mutual. Also, both men have to get over their misconceptions about romance and partnerships--because they've been burned a bit in the past. It's a sweet and sexy story and I really enjoyed the interplay between them.

The narrator does a great job of carrying the Brooklyn accents of Tony's family, the upstate inflections of Remy and Reeve, as well as Leo's subtlely accented Spanish/Philly voice. The pacing was great, with lots of description that all played into the characters' growth. I loved the angst of Tony, the wholeheartedness of Remy and the jaded parts of Reeve and Leo. They all work well, and their voices were easily discerned in my head. It's a great duology, and I would be happy to listen to both stories repeatedly.

A Way With Words
3.75 stars. M/M ofy romance novella.
A low angst sweet romance.
Told from Tony’s point of view, a closeted construction worker with a big Italian family who meets Remy the out & proud music teacher who recently moved to NYC and has been supplementing his income by playing in the park near the construction site.
Tony is nice and salt of the earth who is at his breaking point and Remy is non demanding and sweet. Their attraction is immediate and they are sweet together. The steam level is moderate.
It is an easy and sweet read.

A Way With You
3.5 stars M/M gfy romance novella.
A standalone sequel to A Way with Words.
Also a low angst sweet romance.

I didn’t like it as much as A Way with Words. I didn’t get the initial connection between Reeve and Leo. It felt manufactured.
But it improved once Reeve stopped working for Leo and they started being together.
It was steamier than the other book.

Told from Reeve’s point of view, a real estate agent who recently moved to NYC after a bad breakup with his fiancée. He is bi and is magnetically attracted to Leo, his high powered boss.
Reeve is generally sweet but he tends to blow up unexpectedly. Leo has it all in life except for any meaningful relationships, he is intense but self awareness/vulnerable.
I liked Leo more but it took a bit to see their connection.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.5 stars
🔥🔥🔥🔥 Heat Level: 4
🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 Narration: 5

I loved the Nelson brothers and each story is unique, hot, and passionate.

Tony and Remy are so sweet and a little fumbling as they move through the attraction with each other in secret as Tony is not out. As they “court” their feelings grow and the fear of being found out becomes more of a problem. When their secret gets out Tony is forced to face his true feelings and his family. There love story is sweet and endearing and a little bit adorable.

Now Reeve’s story is full of fire, heat, and passion and once that spark is ignited so much more lies underneath. Leo and Reeve start of firey but there is so much more to Leo and while Reeve fights his feelings a bit Leo knows what he wants and goes for it.

Both these brothers stories are passionate and sweet and Alexander did a fantastic job narrating both these stories, with different tones, nuances, and dialects, it was a fantastic listen!

Two sweet quick reads

The two stories contained in this set are sweet, quick reads about brothers finding their hearts and their futures in NYC. The first one is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story of coming out and finding acceptance and happiness. The second one is a more push-pull story about figuring out who you are and what you want. More power, anger, and lust driven than angst and heartbreak.

I felt like I got to know Remy and Tony from book one better than Reeve and Leo from book two. Maybe because there was more soul searching and reflection and hurt from Tony and understanding from Remy that allowed us to feel like they let us in. I felt invested and wanted to root for them to get their HEA. I never felt like I really got to know Reeve or Leo and the story felt a bit more rushed and not as deep. But it was still an engaging read.

Probably closer to 3.5

These were two enjoyable stories. I’m not always enamored of the settings/characters the author uses, nothing wrong, just personal preference. I liked book one more than book two because I could easily empathize with huge Italian-Catholic families and the fear of coming out. The second book was just okay for my tastes.

Hmm.... I think my mood (with what is happening right now) is bleeding out to every thing so yeah.... 2 stories I know, liked and loved respectfully just didn't reach me and it's not the narrator's fault, 'cos I love Alexander Cendese and I think he did a great job with both stories (his Tony and Leo ohlala!!!).

So yeah it's totally me and not the stories or narration.
