Return to Motel Universe! After the Skins’ slave rebellion and assassination of tycoon dictator, Barton Flump, a lone bounty hunter, Clara Constellation, searches for Captain Littlehead and the ghost of Caligula. From Planet Pear, where screentime is all the time, to the Adonis Nebula, an empire where the Fashion Police rule with an actual iron fist, the adventure never ends!
Following directly from Motel Universe (the recap pages were such a fantastic idea), the story pits bounty hunter Clara Clairvoyant against the villanous intergalactic slaver known as the Ghost of Caligula who escaped justice from the first volume. Clara sets off to track down Captain Littlehead, an ex-lover who has knowledge of Caligula's whereabouts. Her journey takes her to the most notorious intergalactic sweat shop, the Faschion Empire.
The zaniness in Motel Universe 2 is dialed up tenfold, and Drescher's artwork follows suit. The art is textured with intricate linework and bold colors, but it's the small visual riffs that really makes this book shine. There is loads of satire, political commentary and pop culture references stuffed into the story, but they are subtly implemented via wry, deadpan visual gags. I had an even better time with this sequel, and I can't wait to read the upcoming third volume.
