There is no fear in love ... so why is Jessica still running from it?Jessica Chamberlain and her search-and-rescue dog, Luke, hunt for lost people in the Tidewater area of Virginia. But that’s a side Jess’s work as a private investigator pays the bills. Right now, she’s looking for a girl missing for twenty years and the truth about a man’s suicide. When someone runs her off the road and her house burns down, she could take the hint and leave—but she won’t.
Regrouping in a fleabag motel far from her friends, Jess battles loneliness and anxiety. When a rich man in Norfolk asks her to find his runaway wife, Jess happily accepts his hefty advance. Soon she’s on the Eastern Shore, between sea and sky, bay and ocean, the present and the past. Will Jess find the woman before fear finds them both?
Linda writes "white-knuckle fiction"--FBI thrillers with a twist of faith--from her home in rural Virginia. She's had careers as a government worker, a stay-at-home mom, and a journalist. Her husband, Larry, worked at the FBI Academy for over 25 years. Together they have three grown children. These days, Linda stays entertained by two cats and a Sheltie who tries to herd them. When she's not writing, you can find her walking in the woods, at the beach or doing something (anything) with dogs.
This is the second book I've read by Linda White. I enjoyed it very much. She has a wonderful way of bringing what happens to a testimony of God's faithfulness. Her story is tight and keeps you wondering how it's going to end. I'm going to look for the next book now!
Another page turner from Linda J. White! 'Fear' took me to a new world of equine therapy, a deeper understanding of K9 Search and Rescue, thrilling Private Investigator work, a little romance, and a meaningful, spiritual life lesson. This book has it all! I cannot wait for K9 Search and Rescue book 3 to come out! I want more Jess and want to follow her to the next 'chapter' of her life.
Jess moves away from her friend Nate and pushes away from her support base. She believes she is learning to be on her own. She picks up a few new cases, one involving a death that is classified as an accidental death and then one of a missing girl that is over 19 years old.
Excellent book, couldn't put it down. Finished at 1am and ready to start the next one!
In The Fear That Chases Me, Jessica Chamberlain and her search-and-rescue dog, Luke, are moving about two hours away from her good friends to live and work in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Her dear friend Nate is not happy and feels she is running. "Cain't tell a body what to do, though." Despite his thoughts on the matter, Nate is her biggest supporter.
Jess’s work as a private investigator pays the bills. She takes on some interesting cases. From a brother convinced his sibling did not commit suicide, to sweet Miss Lottie and her desperate need to find her long lost daughter, to the rich and charming realtor searching for his runaway wife and finding the equine therapy ranch for healing mostly children from their trauma. I couldn't stop turning pages!
I highly recommend The Fear That Chases Me by Linda J. White. I thoroughly enjoyed the interesting and suspenseful private investigator work, a touch of romance, true friendship, and meaningful spiritual life lessons.
This is an amazing book. Linda J White is a master of suspense, character development and creating vivid physical settings for her books. This book captured me on page one. I could not let go until I found out how the complex main character, Jessica, unravelled the complex cases she was working on, including resolving her own unwillingness to trust and let others into her life. White tells a great story that is fast-paced, interesting and sensitive. I loved it and look up to her as one of my role model authors.
shes a pi with a search and rescue dog. all her friends are married so she moved to another city and got a little house in the woods
she was investigating a case where she thinks the wife killed the husband and the cop who handled it and said the husband killed himself. she finds him coming out of the widows house at night, with her in a bathrobe and took a photo. she was run off the road, totaled her car, her and the dog were hurt. her camera was stolen
she didnt want the case of a mom who is going to die in 6 mths from cancer, but her daughter has been missing for 20 yrs and she wants to know what happened. the mom prayed for her to find a new car and she found a perfect one.
someone burned down her house and she cant get a reference to get another rental. no one believes her
the wife she was looking for turned out to be the abused daughter of the lady that died at the end, leaving her all of her money. the daughter died after stabbing the pi who can quit her job and do something else and move closer to the fbi guy shes seeing now

Linda White is a new to me author and I will for sure be looking for more. This was an exciting plot line. And it helps that the main character has my name. Ha! White brings a good mix of action, suspense, faith, and dialogue, with a little romance as well. Her characters were well developed, and I enjoyed following Jessica's adventures. If I'm honest, at times Luke kind of stole the scene - I really like having animals in books as long as it fits the plot, which this certainly did.
Overall this was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more from White. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
An intriguing series that is best read in order due to Jess's personal life and complicated relationships as well as her faith journey. In this second book she juggles several cases while still trying to come to grips with her past. Her knee jerk reaction is to run when she gets close to people. Luckily she has tenacious friends who are infinitely patient and able to overlook her occasional lashing out. Their stubborn love is what draws her closer to God and I really appreciate the strength and depth of that inspirational thread. Always enjoy the search and rescue insights and K-9 superstar Luke. I would definitely want to be rescued by him! Excited to continue on this journey with Jess and company in future books in the series.
Was a good story on K-9 search but soon became a book more on being open to faith. Several stories in one as Jess (a P.I.) and Luke her K-9 try to solve cases. Loved Miss Lottie and her desperate need to find her long lost daughter. Then there was the Realtor/notable man about town’s search for his runaway wife. The ranch for healing emotional and abused children. The way these stories intertwined while Jess kept running into personal bad luck was good. For me, too many pages were taken up trying to convince the reader to believe.
I enjoyed the story, especially the dogs and horses. I rarely have a problem with someone's spiritual beliefs but this author's treatment of the subject was ham fisted. I understood what she was trying to say, I come from a similar conservative background, but it sounded stiff and churchy; not in the same tone as the rest of the book. Describing spiritual experiences is more effective if you use them like glitter -- if used sparingly it can be magical but too much glitter is messy and spoils the effect.
Jess Chamberlain is a former police officer turned P.I. She also volunteers with a Search and Rescue group with her GSD Luke. In this book, she relocated away from her friends after feeling a bit of a fifth wheel. Then she struggles with gaining new clients and loss, after antagonising a suspect she’s investigating. There is a lot to like about the story particularly if you’re into dogs and horses, but I found the religious references a bit over the top, myself.
White gives another look at zip Jessica's life as a PI and the voluntary work she and her German Shepherd, Luke did for the Search and Rescue squad in the Virginia area she moved to. Her beloved friend Nate, helps her to solve her personal problems of fear and running away. It is quite a suspense story. Looking forward to White's book 3 in the K-9 Search and Rescue series. Do Enjoy!
Give me a dog that solves serious problems and I’m hooked
This is the second book I have read by Linda White. She tells a good story and keeps you on your toes. Since I have a goofy, friendly German Shepherd I always like to read about them and their accomplishments. This book has mystery, redemption and a bit of romance. It also credits much of the ability to learn to love with God’s love. Although this is somewhat unusual I like this take on love and redemption.
Good book with some excellent characters. Jess struggled with her life and her faith. It almost costed her everything until she recognized what she was running away from. Scott's new lease on life made him into a man who could take a chance on learning to live again. Very good book.
This book is wonderful in so many ways. The characters have depth and their journey towards faith that is woven into the story is so well told. The twisty suspense is great. I really enjoyed the interesting horse and pony segments and always the dogs, too. This book is both very entertaining and a blessing.
Jess ran from Nate, Scott and her life, after finding a connection with Scott. But as the book continues, she learns how to trust and love. Takes 2 cases that end up connected in a bazaar way. I couldn't read fast enough to see how this one would end!
This is the second in the K-9 Searcg & Rescue series. I enjoyed this one more than the first and am looking forward to the next. I was sad about Tamera/Elisa/Ann, hoping for a good ending for her. In this one Kessica finally stops running and realizes who has been directing her all along. I recommend this book to young adults and older.
Jess has been through a lot and is running from relationships. She moved tho southern Virginia. She was injured pursuing a case and met with God and is moving back to Northern Virginia and trying to have a relationship with Scott. Great storytelling, fluid writing, easily read.
This second book in the series was a good one. Jessica was really not a very likable person as the story opens. I’m glad that changed by the end of the book. Thankfully, these books don’t end in cliffhangers, BUT you will want to read them in order for everything to make sense. Vanessa Daniels again narrates—and again I cringed at the words she mispronounced.
Oh my goodness! I chose this book because it had an SAR dog in it but few books can pull me in like this one. I actually lived in it and cannot wait to read all her books. This book can be listed as mysteries, thriller, SAR'S, romance, mental health, and Christian. This book will grab your heart in so many ways!
This is the second K9 SAR book I have read and I have found them so compelling! Adore the character development of Jess, how she is led to faith in God, and her relationships with Nate, Laura, and Scott. The commitment she has to Luke, her K9, is perfect. I can’t wait to read more in this series. I only write reviews if a book really speaks to me.
The story was really interesting and amazing. I was captivated from the beginning. Luke was a huge hero and amazing help for Jess. I loved how Christianity was brought in the story line and how much it enhanced the whole attitude of the people involved. Would love to read more of this type of article. Great story!!!!
Really appreciated all the SAR activity and information. Those who do this are truly outstanding. Jess, Nate and Scott - their stories - were filled with trauma and strength and vulnerability and grace. Thank you for sharing them.
This was the 4th book I've read that Linda wrote, and just like the others, I wasn't disappointed. It kept me on the edge of my seat and my heart rate high. I've learned so much in her books. I will be reading the rest of her books!
Thank you for this style of writing. It helps me seeing it. Though I have no dog I have had them as a kid. Now that I'm retired I also volunteer at Renew Theraputic Riding Center helping challenged students enjoy riding. Its a great ministry.
They say God is dog spelled backwards. There is a reason for this. Together a dog, Luke, and God through his owner , Jess, are able to find people by SAR and see lives transformed.
An intriguing second novel following the main character from #1. Worth the read and keeps you wanting more. Hope to read more about Jess and where she choses to go from here.
Gal had lots of trauma in her life and she ran from her friends who were too close. Her dog is her salvation. She and Luke did SAR together. She also did PI stuff for a living. Her friend is helping her pray. This becomes a bigger and bigger part of the story.
This is another really good story by this really good writer.
The heroine of the story is a Search and Rescue K-9 handler who is running from relationships with people and God because her father died saving others during the 9/11 attack on the World trade center towers.
