Big John and the Fortune Teller

Rate this book
Los Angeles.Fifteen-year-old Big John Hoover has strange tingly hands and an unstoppable appetite. But when he learns his dream girl could never love a 258-pound teenager, he wanders into a psychic shop in Venice searching for the secret to her heart. And though he’s skeptical when the mystical madam has him draw the fit body he desires, he’s stunned to wake the next day ripped and handsome.

Despite his hunky new form snagging him high-paying modeling gigs and the most popular chick in school, he’s certain there must be more to life than being impossibly buff. And when the fortune teller returns to reveal why he feels so weird inside, he discovers he possesses a unique healing destiny that paints a deadly target on his back.

Can this remade guy survive unwanted lethal attention?

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

Big John is a 15 year old kid struggling with his weight. He's got a crush on his neighbor. When he goes to a fortune teller, she casts a spell that allows him to become fit in a day. From there, he has some adventures, gains some powers, and meets a woman.

Pretty good, in a mystical sort of way.

what did I just read?

That was... something. It read like the kind of thing I would have written in the 9th grade, only with way better grammar and a weirdly spiritual bent. That's the best way I can think to describe it.
It was a ride, that's for sure! It was maybe a half hour read, but in that time, the protagonist went from fat zero to svelte and spiritually enlightened hero. I won't spoil the details. There was just so much with fulfillment fantasy going on, and it all just.... happened. Instantly. No lead up, no plot development, just....bam, bam, bam!
Look, I just need you to read it for yourself. Objectively, it was not great, but it is such a small time investment, and the price is so low, that it's worth reading just to see for yourself. And maybe wax nostalgic about the stuff you wrote as a young teen and stashed in a shoebox under the bed.

Readable

Strange book !! Maybe it's for California teenager but no one else? I'm any case got to about a third of the way they but could not keep going!! If the writer has made the character likable then maybe it would have been so I but as it is the main character was a spoiled rich kid!!

Be careful what you wish for

A story that shows that sometimes what you wish for is not the best thing for you and may have unintended consequences. An interesting, short read.
I won this book thru a goodreads.com giveaway.

Hilarious new YA voice

Thank you Goodreads for the free giveaway e-book.

This is a great YA/adult crossover that covers a lot of ground in terms of humor and theme. Lost one star because many of the minor characters and plot points felt rushed as a result.

I’m not sure exactly what I just read but I’m here for the sequel.

Jumped around, no plot, I’m not sure what his target group is but just made no sense no matter age group.
