Crime [and Lager]

Rate this book
When London Rose, 33, is proposed to by her long-time boyfriend, she realizes she is facing a stable, predictable, pre-determined (and passionless) life. She freaks out and runs the other way—accepting instead a job across the Atlantic, as a tour-guide on a high-end European cruise line that travels through a country a day. London is searching for a more romantic, unscripted and exciting life that she feels sure exists out there somewhere.

London is elated: the European river towns are small, historic and charming. She gets to see a new port every night, gets to sample an endless array of new cuisine and meet a stream of interesting people. It is a traveler’s dream, and it is anything but predictable.

In Book 3, CRIME (AND LAGER), the cruise takes them into Germany, into its historic towns and fabled beer festivals. But when a festival goer—a loud, arrogant local—turns up dead from drinking too much beer, suspicion falls on the touring passengers. The death is quickly ruled a murder, and London realizes her future—and that of the ship—hinges on her solving the crime.

Laugh-out-loud funny, romantic, endearing, rife with new sights, culture and food, CRIME (AND LAGER) offers a fun and suspenseful trip through the heart of Europe, anchored in an intriguing

Fun and funny with a great authentic touch (and taste) of the places they are visiting--this time Germany and a beerfest--London and Sir Reggie are up to their old tricks, trying to hunt down a murder so the cruise ship can go on its way. A touch of romance and top off with a mystery and you have a good read.

This time we're in Germany for a beer festival. We rejoin London & the guests aboard their adventurous cruise.
And of course London finds the victim and so becomes tossed into the middle of the investigation. There's a suspect but is it too obvious? You'll need to pay attention to clues along the way.

And something is up with her assistant Amy. We know she doesn't like her but is she sabotaging her as well? As with the others, the mystery element of the story takes a while to show up. While it's moving slowly in that aspect, I did enjoy listening to the story as it progressed.
There's also the possibility of romance on the horizon for London which would be nice.

I'm enjoying doing this series on audio as it's more entertaining to me that way. The narrator does a good job.
I've heard that river cruises aren't that great but I must say, after reading this series, it does make you want to go on one of them. (minus the dead bodies of course) The writer does a great job of evoking the experience of a river cruise.

FYI: Each book picks up where the previous one left off so this is a good series to do in a binge read. But if like me, you're taking each one as it comes, you're not lost b/c you don't recall all the exact details of the previous books.

A cozy mystery set on a river cruise in Germany. Uncomplicated, easy to read, and delightful descriptions of a beer fest.

London Rose is the social director aboard the Nachtmusik, a 100-passenger cruise ship on the Danube River. Sir Reggie, a Yorkshire Terrier, is her sidekick. I was drawn into the story right away, and sensed I was in the hands of a master storyteller. However, before the requisite murder occurs in this well-written cozy mystery, I had the feeling of being in the middle of a Rick Steves travelogue. Lots of description spouts from the mouths of London and her “stuffy” cohort, Emil the historian, as they lead a group of passengers on a tour of Regensburg, Bavaria. We get endless detail about statues, ancient Roman archways, cathedrals, bridges, WWII Nazis, Bavarian jazz, plus mouthwatering descriptions of German fare, including lager, of course!

Still, I couldn’t put the book down. Why? Because I wanted to find out what happens next! This author had me hooked from the start. The plot is clever, and I didn’t guess whodunit until near the end. I cared about London and the grumpy cruise guest who gives London such a hard time. I was beguiled by London’s mysterious, missing mother. I also wondered whether London and ship’s chef Bryce would get their budding romance off the ground.

The characters are fascinating, although to a certain extent, all of them have somewhat stilted speech patterns. London doesn’t talk like any 33-year-old I know, but more like someone much older. And the music played onboard is Cole Porter. Since this is a cozy, with no foul language, gore, or explicit sex, the speech patterns and musical tastes of the characters are probably acceptable to the novel’s target audience (that includes me). I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author, and I would definitely be willing to purchase other books in this series. But the digital ARC I read contained errors, such as missing periods at the ends of sentences, and a paragraph broken in the middle of a sentence to start a new paragraph. It hasn’t been carefully edited.

If you enjoy travel and love beer, you’ll like this novel, and you’ll learn a lot about brewing.

Travel Murder Mystery with No Expectations.

Lighthearted murder mystery reminiscent of Agatha Christie's earlier works combined with strong travelogue elements like Rick Steves' tours. This family-friendly tale (third in the series) follows London Rose, the social director of a German river cruise ship, and her misadventures of tourists and their encounters along the Rhine Valley waterways and a series of unrelated murders in each of the books.

Told from London's point of view, the storyline includes a hodgepodge of several subplots amid miscellaneous events of the holiday cruise journey. Although the storytelling is straightforward and a bit trite at times, it is light entertainment for those seeking a less-serious escape read. The closely tied six-book installments must be read in order to appreciate the larger story contexts of the whole series.

Although the German-English language conflicts were amusing at times, they also slowed the story's already snail-like pacing. Problematic too was the author's first-name choice for the protagonist heroine, London, something that became a conflicting distraction in story of travelers visiting many European cities.

The author's superficial writing style of other series continues here with mostly flat characters, trivial story elements, and stereotypical situations. Much of the plotlines seem drawn out intentionally to motivate readers to purchase the whole 6-book collection. His writing depth reminds me of an average murder-mystery TV series from the 1980s: a little ho hum.

Although Audible's narration supplement added some dramatic oomph, the story's fundamental blandness remained.

Possibly a good story for younger readers, this series offers a fast, lightly entertaining yet forgettable reading experience.

Interesting cozy mystery set on a small cruise ship that typically you see on the Rhine/Danube River in Germany. London Rose, leaves a marriage proposal behind with a highly predictable future, and jumps at the chance to travel on a small cruise ship in Europe. This is the 3rd book in the series, but you don't really have to read the first two to enjoy this one. Although, I must say, I will go back and read the first two of the series. In this book London, of course, finds a body in a vat of Beer at a Bavarian festival, with the local police thinking that London may have committed the murder! She needs to think fast and solve the crime so the ship can leave on time.

I enjoyed the characters in the book and the intrigue of hints of her Mother, who left home years ago, leaving her children with her husband, and never to be heard from again. Also the cruise ship owner is a bit of a mystery. I can only imagine that we also get hints about the two of them in the two previous books.

If you are looking for an enjoyable read, with glimpses of Europe, this is definitely the series for you! Thoroughly enjoyed it!

A more than enjoyable story!

What I liked about the book:
1. The author is a master storyteller. It is almost impossible to put the book down once you begin reading it.
2. The characters are wonderful and likeable (even the sour pusses are not offensive and play their part well.).
3. The history and scenery descriptions of the cruise destinations are amazing/interesting.
4. It’s a full stand-alone whodunit that is also part of a series.
5. The mystery surrounding both the owner of the cruise line and London’s mother are both intriguing. Each book in the series gives a little more insight into both of these characters and I find myself wondering where the author is going with their stories after I have finished reading the current story.
6. It is a clean read.
7. You don’t have to wait six months to a year between book releases in the series.

What I did not like about the book:
1. N/A. I found nothing I did not like about the book.

I received a free copy of this book from the author via BookSirens and am voluntarily leaving a review. This gift did not affect my review of the book. This review is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Crime and Lager is book 3 in the series. Blake Pierce has written an outstanding cozy mystery. London Rose is the Activity Director on board the Nachtmusik River boat. The Nachtmusik is docking in Germany and the cruisers will be able to enjoy the Hoffmann Fest. I really enjoy how Blake is able to blend characters from book to book as well as the dynamics if each character. Crime and Lager opens with a disagreeable passenger, Audrey Bolton. Of course once everyone is at the festival, a murder happens and London and Audrey are the prime suspects. London and her faithful dog, Sir Reggie, are busy sleuthing. I really enjoyed the thread throughout the book of London’s missing mother. I am hoping that I will learn more about London’ mother in book 4. This series is a little bit different from Blake Pierce’s other books, which I love. I can’t wait to read book 4 in this wonderful series. This is the 3rd in the European voyage cozy mystery series, but the 1st one I have read. I probably would have preferred to have read the earlier books just to get an idea of the background of the characters. There was enough in the book to give you an idea of what went on before, but I still felt there was something missing. This is no reflection on the story, just my personal choice.

For the story itself, I quite enjoyed it. I love the background of the cruise holiday visiting different European cities. It remindes me of the joy of traveling and visiting new places and experiencing different things. The description and historical references in the book of Bamberg were excellent, and it makes me long for lots of beer and sausages!

Anyway, it seems once again that London Rose is again an unlikely suspect in the murder of a disliked local person, so of course, she sets out to find the real culprit. I'm curious as to what is going on with some of the characters and their various backgrounds, and I am looking forward to the next book to see how things further develop, not to mention the next destination is Amsterdam.

Our fun group of cruise ship characters have managed to mostly enjoy themselves while surviving/helping to solve two murders. And now they are attending a beer festival. What could possibly go wrong? There were so many places that had me laughing, especially a certain passenger wearing a rather unusual getup. I’m enjoying getting to know some of the passengers on a deeper level with each book. As I take the cruise vicariously, I’m amazed how the sights, sounds, food and the local culture are woven into the story so naturally. The mystery has many twists that kept me guessing to the end and I am so curious to find out more about the mysterious, eccentric cruise ship owner and London Rose’s mother. Love this series!

I was a little concerned going into this book because I hadn’t found the second book in this series to be that enjoyable. Fortunately, I was drawn right into this story.
This time, the ship is traveling into Germany. They arrive in the middle of a huge beer festival. By the end of the night, a murder has happened (SURPRISE!!). Of course this delays the ship once again, as London Rose is a suspect. She begins her own investigation and this ruffles more than a few feathers.
I see a lot more character growth in this book. We learns bit more about each of the main characters and it seems to add something to the story that I felt was missing in the second book. Now I’m once again looking forward to next time.
Thank you to BookSirens for providing an e-copy of this book for my voluntary review.

This is the third instalment on London Roses’ cruise around Europe, as the ships tour director, where she stumbles across murder and mystery in every port. This one is at a German Beer Festival and brings with it it’s own problems. This is an easy read but with enough interest to keep you going right to the very satisfying ending. London’s character is developing nicely, as are the other crew members. The guests are also part of the interest, as a little more is revealed about each one. It’s very atmospheric of the usual German beer festivals that have been going on for years, from the Umpah bands to the food. I look forward to reading about their next port of call

Any other fun read of the escapades of London Rose, cruise ship social director, who despite her best efforts manages to get entangled with murders. Her entanglements cause cruise delays and gives her free time to act like a crime solving Nancy Drew. It is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand alone. Characters are fun and quirky. Great setting descriptions, makes you want to take a river cruise in Europe. Wonderful book to escape our current 'semi lockdown- limited travel' status and a great break from heavy reads. Enjoy!

I was provided an advanced reader copy but was under no obligation to provide a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Once again London finds trouble, another dead person. There are so many mysteries in this book. Just who is London's boss? We still haven't seen his, or maybe her, face. Where are London's relationship with Emil Waldmüller and Bryce Yeaton going? What is Amy hiding THIS time? Will Bob be a help or hinderance to London's investigation. It's a wonderful slow clime to discovering who the murder, or murders, might be. Then it's a dash to the finish, with Sir Reggie in hot pursuit. So get ready to learn about part of Germany, it's food, culture and people. But most of all, I hope you really enjoy this book as I did. It was painful to stop part way through the book to deal with real life.

Crime (and Lager) is book 3 in Blake Pierce’s charming series European Voyage. The series is a cozy mystery series about London Rose, a social director on a river cruise who has a knack for finding bodies and solving mysteries. There are so many things to enjoy about these books. They contain historical tidbits and/or travel information about cities along the Danube. The characters continue to develop along the journey. The puzzles are fun. When you want light reading, a cozy by Blake Pierce is perfect entertainment.

The ship cpntinues to have its schedule delayed because in each stop they run into complications with the police and murders. In Germany it was no different, Blake Pierce keeps on giving us history lessons about the places where the ship stops with beautiful descriptions of people, places, sensations, beverages and foods. It´s not difficult to imagine what the beer or the food tastes like. The story is fast-paced and full of action, and now it also focus on London´s personal family problems which may be an interesting development and another mystery to be solved. Really entertaining reading!

A fun series with a unique storyline that stays fresh . Well fleshed out characters and a mystery that is meticulously plotted. I learn something new about the country each book in the series focuses on.

London is looking forward to visiting Bavaria but Emil is acting strangely and there's a cranky cruise guest to deal with. Then London discovers the body of an obnoxious food critic in a vat of beer. She falls under suspicion and is determined to find the murderer before she ends up arrested.

There is nothing quite like a cozy mystery to clear the head of too many romances or no -fuctiins or gritty mysteries. This series, set on a river cruise boat in Europe is a particular treat. Actually, I think I know the cruise line upon which this cruise ship is based, so each book in this series feels comfortable and familiar.

The writing is so crisp, yet lucious. The characters may be quite wacky, but they are just mild characterizations of people we've all met at some point.

Pleasant and entertaining light read just made for those who like the cozy mystery genre. This is a quick read. I agree with other reviewers that some of the conversation seems a bit stilted but I found this book quite enjoyable. There is quite a lot of travelogue talk, more than one might expect even given the cruise ship setting. Interesting mystery, lots of travel talk, and many glimpses of Europe fill this story with a bit more than one generally finds in a cozy mystery. Recommended. The third book of my fav cozy crime series.
Ah, this one has the nice "the worst of us is the dead one" I like.but also, a couple of surprising character developments!

As always the cultural trip was nice, felt like I'm there with them listening to the dynamic tour guides, dancing in costume and eating delicious street and festive food.
This murder case practically happened on the streets, and every tourist/ native got a front seat to the drama and the plot twists! That was hilarious to me.

I enjoyed
this series of books for the things I learned about the places where the murders took place along the Danube and Rhine River cruise. Being a “cozy mystery” the trope gets tiring by the 6th book, but the mysteries are all different and the places are all described in detail that makes me either remember or or want to visit the place.

I also appreciated the clean aspect of the book. Little to no swearing or sex. The main character takes 3 books to even get to a kiss! A refreshing change.

This is the third book in a cozy mystery series and I feel that you need to read the series in order to enjoy this one. I didn't care for the MC name as it can be confusing considering where the tours take place. I did not figure out the murder though and that's a big plus.

Book 1 took me a couple of chapters to get into the story, as each instalment progresses furthers my interest. The story is a little slower than Blake’s other faster paced FBI stories whereas this series lets readers enjoy and soak up the atmosphere and be able to visualise the scenery that is described.
