The Old Navy, The glorious heritage of the U.S. Navy, recounted through the journals of an American patriot who, as a midshipman, served on wooden sailing vessels and, as an Admiral, lived to see
294 pages with one photo section, 1983, 6 1/4 By 9 1/2" Autobiography of Rear Admiral Daniel P. Mannix III . Very intimate look at a boy growing up in a Navy family and going on to fill his father's shoes
Mannix' book is a collection of his father's diaries from his time in the U.S. Navy, covering the late 1890s through the 1930s. These diary excerpts and the commmentary provide a firsthand view of the Spanish-American War, the Great White Fleet, mining of the North Sea during WWI, and the interwar era. What is really interesting is how much responsibility junior officers such as Mannix were given during this time. Well written and insightful, I felt this book made an excellent account of an often forgotten era in naval history.
A fun read! I would have liked to been alive during the time this book was written. A whole different world to say the least! A lot more freedom that's for sure!
