Supervillainy and Other Poor Career Choices #2

Supervillainy and Other Poor Career Choices: Book Two

Rate this book
Portland. A city on the verge of collapse, where the strong rule and the weak suffer. What better place for a budding supervillain to make his mark? To form his empire? Of course, first he'd have to deal with a looming gang war, his former enemies, his former allies, his former friends, his former lover and all the while avoiding being detected by his heroically inclined sister. Should be simple enough, right?

An author who has only written two books. The first one, written in 2019, was an audiobook that I enjoyed more than I expected. I had kept tabs on the sequel, but for some reason, it's not available anywhere. Four years later, I finally tracked down an errant ebook and put it on my reader. It became something I'd remember. What was the mystery? Is this an occult work?

It's a partially web-published ebook of a supervillian (maybe-RPG-lite) adventure, where a mech-suit-wearing weapon engineer in some sci-fi urban world that doesn't make sense, he has a gun shop and works with two hot superhero ladies. But he's an anti-social engineering nerd, albeit one slowly forming an army of robot drones and orphan children. He doesn't have time for women. I actually enjoyed this despite several problems; you can kind of see why it was cancelled. The ending makes no sense. I didn't even remember who these characters were from the first book, and the book badly explains what anyone looks like or does.

But it kinda has heart. The main character is selfish and mean-spirited in a way that makes this fun. Ends with a huge cliffhanger for no reason, which will never be fulfilled. Has exactly one good action scene. When the killer-robot-maker starts reading How to Make Friends and Influence People to deal with his mangled orphan army, it made me laugh.

Серията за "суперзлодея" който е такъв само защото за нищо друго не го бива (в социален аспект, иначе като инженер е гений) продължава доста добре с приключенията му в изгнание.

За съжаление авторът си е дал почивка и в момента не пише продължение на серията.

Narrated by Neil Hellegers
Erich is a near-genius tech-engineer eking out a living in his repair shop, so when he gets a broken-down suit of power armour he intends to sell it quickly to pay off his debts. Unfortunately things don't go the way he planned and he ends up working for a supervillain, his two crazed daughters and their gang of crooks. He gets dragged into the criminal underbelly of his city and discovers that he has a talent for it, though he ends up fighting off a gang of neo-nazis when he knows he should be running away. And how come the bad-guy supervillain - even worse than his current boss - knows his real name and more about his past that Erich wants to reveal? This is a fun listen.

Fun story needs polishing

As a story, this is a fun read. I would advise the author to put their kindle on text to speech and listen. Both books are missing words that the eye can skip over, but the ear will pick up. Next critique is word usage. Don't say disorientated . It is not a word. The word you're looking for is disoriented. Also, in this book you have a machine called the de-thawer which is used to dethaw criminals from cargo storage. Wouldn't de-thawing actually be freezing? Lastly, gun lingo. It's a common mistake, but please don't say clips when you mean magazine. They are not the same things even though many think they are.

It's small potatoes, but the minor irritants do add up and knock some of the fun out of the story. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Much better than the first

While book one might have been a fun if generic Genius Villain in Superpowered Suit, book 2 goes being that, giving Erich something to differentiate him from the likes of Dire, Stringel and Hephaestus.

This one starts not long after the end of book 1, with the group in the West Coast trying to recover from their last battle. Eirich is still a Jerk, but starts mellowing out a bit when he first saves a street urchin because he needed someone to handle customers in his new store.

However, when one of your allies is someone committed to supervillain gang life, things are of course not simple.

So, if you enjoyed book one, this one is better. Does end in a cliffhanger though.

Interesting

This book is a straight continuation of the first book, no times skips, nothing. We find our sorely lacking villain on the west coast all but broke and at wits end. We follow as he begins to build something for himself before it a;l comes to a head in a rather unexpected way.

Overall a good book and series. Needs some more q/c checks but it’s on the up and up and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good story, terrible editing

As much as ive enjoyed the story so far, it is jarring to encounter the many misspellings, missing words and grammatical errors in this book.
I have enjoyed the world that has been built by the author, and the characters are well developed, but please take the time to have someone proofread the next installment.

Better than the first installment, though it suffers from some of the same issues. Pacing and focus, theming, and dialogue at times ebb and flow in quality in a way that makes sense for a first draft. I did read the initial online version, so maybe the print/kindle version is higher quality, but I'm not going to reread it to check.

Despite the criticism, I did like it, enjoyed what the author did and how they did it. Liked the progression of character and 'factory building' scenario- which, again, had tinges of lit RPG- and could appreciate the tech and fight scenes. It feels like the author wanted to do several different things- gang wars, upgrade scenarios, political maneuvering- and while I wouldn't say they excelled at any of them, it was passable.

Would ecommend to people who enjoy heroes/villians/scifi. Would not read again unless the third book came out.

An interesting take on the SuperVillain story.

Let’s start with the bad.
Editing. Way to many extra words or poorly worded sentences. It mostly seemed as if a rewrite was done and words were left instead of removed. It’s nitpicking but still for myself, a distraction.

The good.
I like the main character. His story is intriguing and personality does change a bit. But that growth/evolution is believable. The secondary characters are interesting and add to the story. The tech and super powers are not over done and of course the humanity is shown when even the good guys are corrupted.

Anyway, like the series and look forward to the third book.

This book is an overall decent progress from the first book, however not great.

It is interesting how the main character grew into becoming more individualised and less concerned on how everyone looks at him. However, this character transformation shift drastically into doing something that doesn't resemble how he would approach the problem he faces at the end. Its hard to see him doing that is consider impossible especially consider all the possible variables that he is completely aware of.

It will be interesting on how the author can explain away this point and the subsequent character in future books.

I liked the first one better. Eric seemed to distant in this one. At least to the other characters in the story. The ending was a little disappointing. Overall I liked it. Bronte and Gravity provided good balance to the story. Zig Zag I’m still trying to get a mental image in my mind. The power struggles drove the story. Eric does have a heart after all. He did use those kids but he provided them with a better life than what they had. Again the ending left me a bit perplexed. Maybe if there is a volume 3 it will be explained. Overall I liked it.

Interesting

This was difficult to follow completely. Perhaps it's me but I would read the next paragraph and be suddenly lost. A slow edit for errors would not have been in vain either. There were aspects I enjoyed very much.

Amazing

I did like the cliff anger. It has multiple naming errors. But I like it a lot. Time to wait for the next book. This author has inspire me to write my own books while waiting.

Good, but didnt strike a chord like the first book in the series.

Why the lower score? If you like the first book, then you will like this one. However, the flaws of the first installment are more apparent here.

1)There are spelling mistakes and grammatical errors (enough for me to notice)
2)The story feels rushed. The author tries to cram a large plot into the same page count as the prequel book. Things just happen, and could have done with a lot of expansion
3)Theres a lot less violence. Part of the charm of the series so far, has been its comic book style Garth Ennis fighting sequences. These are mostly gone
4)Its just not as ludicrous. Nazi Strippers with Rocket Launchers? Gone

Overall, I enjoyed reading it, but it didnt keep the momentum going. In places it rehashes the first book, in others, it goes too far in the other direction. Is there a big story trying to be told here? Possibly, but it also does feel like the author is just making it up, as they go along

Supervillain.

I love an effective villain; it’s refreshing to read up on one without the slapstick humor or fumbling ways. In Erich we have a smart villain who doesn’t have to put on airs to be bad. He Is just a D*** who is very knowledgeable about his craft. In this book, we were able to see how long-term planning and attention to detail were able to bring about the fulfillment of his goals. I can’t wait until the next installment.
