In Lasser's world when you make a promise you keep it no matter what the cost, but the promise he made to Suzanne Bannister has come back to haunt him and after the horrific events of the last few weeks his life is in a turmoil of ruin. Guilt is slowly crushing him and the shame of knowing about his hated fathers' involvement in the crimes that took place at Dunston Manor is only adding to the dark stain on his soul. So when people start to die Lasser is ill equipped to focus on the task ahead, he can't shake the feeling of despair, the felling that he has betrayed everyone close to him. But the killer has no interest in Lasser's feelings, he wants to know what it's like to end a life, after all paying others to do his biding has become tedious and besides why should they be the ones who have all the fun? Now he is on a mission to make his fantasy a reality but can Lasser shake off the horror of what he has done in time to stop the killer before he strikes again.
Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England (God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string) He is the author of eight crime/thriller novels featuring DS Lasser. The novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors. If you love your crime fiction crammed with square jawed heroes driving flash cars and glorious women who shimmer with inner light, then the DS Lasser novels are not for you. However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try. 1 The Needle House 2 The Way that it Falls 3 Tethered to the Dead. 4 Twisted Coming soon: 5 More Equal than Others 6 Vanished Beneath 7 Riven 8 Bad Self
I think Robin Roughley, had a great imaginative gem of a plot. Alas ,he allowed the plot to grow arms ,legs talks and wings until it became an utter fantasy. Just too incredible for me. Great to meet the team again especially good old ever the sarge. Lasser The demise of Suzanne was worse than a Greek Tragedy ,it really was overplayed to the extent of tedium. Number 23 was not for me, however having really enjoyed 21 out of 23, is not too bad. Looking forward to 24.
Constructing a Killing was great! I had to stay up to finish it. I tried to stretch it out but I just couldn’t do it! The story was intense. Lasser and company have become valued friends. I won’t give anything away but they were put through the ringer this time. Robin Roughley gets better with every book. Now I have the long wait for the next book! I highly recommend this book.
Another first class Lasser novel from Robin Roughley . This one combines not only Lasser & Odette chasing down the baddies but Bannister coping with a dying Suzanne. Full of excitement and to be honest quite emotional at times as Roughley genuinely makes you feel with his characters Look forward to the next installment
As per usual Lasser does not disappoint. This book is not only thrilling but heart breaking as well. Anyone who has read the series will understand that the loss of a character is poignant at the best of times.
Honestly if you have not read this series, why not?
Once again Rob takes us into Lassers world, with our favourite characters, and the into the underbelly of a dark, mostly wet, Wigan. Loads of people to meet (and lose) along the way, some expected, some not so much. I laughed out loud at times, was blurry eyes at others. Highly recommend the whole series, try them, you won't be sorry.
The abused becomes the abuser. Vengeance and ill gotten money leads to an all powerful psychopath. The comparison of a life well lived and lives that have been wasted leaves the reader with some sadness. But in all the turmoil and sadness, Lasser prevails. Hope the next in the series is more upbeat.
Robin words fail me you never have me read a book and wonder an i going to enjoy it ? I have never ever read a book of yours and felt that it needed more Carney wait for the next
Best classier book yet. These books just get better. Happy sad full of auction . What a read but why do you always leave a Calif hanger please hurry up with the next book
I can only say, start at the beginning. I cared about each hero and disliked the villains. Excellent character creations. Writing is superior. Rains too much in Wigan. Ha ha.
5* to Rob for another excellent Lasser. I'm an avid fan...need I say more. Background storyline regarding Suzanne handled so sensitively. Plot Intriguing as usual. A real can't put downer. Thanks Rob
Another absolutely amazing book by Robin. I am an avid crime reader and have read the likes of Jeffery Deaver but I can honestly say nothing comes close in brilliance to the Lasser books.
What another good read from mr Roughley. Lasser a brilliant character and have loved everyone of this series. This book was a very emotional read but followers of this series knew it would be as the storyline continues. Keep writing Robin I need more Lasser and Plymouth fixes
Another well crafted story in this excellent series. The characterisations are so good that you actually care what happens to them. Looking forward, as ever, to the next instalment.
Another absolutely amazing book featuring Lasser. Robin Roughley consistently delivers excellent stories with the most imaginatively named characters ever. I am glad there is a reasonable gap between books to give me a rest from sitting on the edge of my seat.
What a emotional book as Susanne tells Lasser of her Illness and promise not to tell her family plus a secret meeting with Plymouth and finds more terrible things about his Father,
This is the latest in the Lasser series and...just wow! Super plot some tears in there for the readers to mourn over but I’m not going to spoil. Fantastic book!
Robin roughley at his best .This one starts off with a disabled boy Benedict Fripp being bullied and then tipped out of his mobility scooter , then we have a brutal murder when a young man's head is blown off in the doorway of a MC Donald's in full view of all .Laser is suffering with what is father did in the past and keeping a secret for a friend .But that's enough of the storyline what did I think .It's certainly different from the normal lasser storyline's .With plenty of emotional and thought provoking interludes but a brilliant read as normal .I think the moral of the story is you reap what you sow so let's all try and be nice to everyone as best we can .( That's what I think anyway) By the way I really liked the word Doppelganger
