A mafia family member and a cop. Both after the same case. The sexual tension between Devil and Joe was sky high. They thought one time to get over and done with it. Little did they know how short that would turn out. Both dominant and fighting for the upper hand, rough, dirty mouthed and sexy af. Under the hard exterior there are some hidden layers, after the hard shell was pulled of a bit there was a softer layer but also nightmares. Protective men for the ones they love, deadly for the ones they hate. There are vague lines with justice and the system and illegal activity. A captivatingly written story with steamy encounters, deadly encounters and a softer ones. Great addition to a great series!
This started out being amazing and the first 50% included some of the best BDSM scenes I've ever read. Unfortunately, the rest of the story was badly let down by instalove, the MCs being overly emotional saps, lackluster plotting and a lack of thorough editing leading to errors that were immersion breaking.
This was definitely one of the best enemies-to-lovers setups I've ever come across. Devil and Joe are instantly attracted to each other and quickly realize that they click on every level (not just sexual) but their chosen careers and loyalties in life are at complete odds. Joe is a cop who believes his job and the law are a way to make the world a better place and Devil is a loyal member of his family's mafia organization and firmly believes that the law isn't helpful to anyone. Unlike most enemies-to-lovers setups where the 'enemy' part is lackluster and often ridiculous, this situation was realistic and it had a huge impact on their relationship. It was hilarious that the author even shaded the first two books in this series (which I wasn't interested in reading) by pointing out how basic and childish the previous book couples conflicts had been when compared to what Devil and Joe are facing.
Another thing I loved is that both Joe and Devil are strong, tough alpha males who enjoy rough sex. They like using their strength against each other and because they know they're evenly matched, they don't have to hold back. It was so refreshing to have both characters remain alpha males while having sex, which sadly doesn't happen very often in the romance genre. It was also great that they enjoyed dominating each other but they also enjoyed submitting to each other, with them switching roles in every sex scene. Making things even more interesting (and hotter) is that they liked making the dominant one fight to subdue them and earn their submission through pushing all the right buttons.
The sex between them in the first half of the book was some of the hottest I've ever come across. It was dirty, kinky and rough but no matter how intense things got, whoever was in the dominant role made sure they respected the submissive's boundaries. They weren't the kind of guys who spent time talking about what they liked and didn't like ahead of time so whoever was the dom had to pay attention to identify when they were getting close to a line or if they had crossed it and then make adjustments.
For example, . In another scenario, .
It was also very sweet that they loved taking advantage of their dominance over the other person to take care of them in ways that the submissive might not tolerate outside the bedroom. In particular, Joe was clearly depressed and very lonely at the beginning of the story, which manifested in him being a workaholic, not sleeping well and not having much of an appetite. Devil notices these things but knows talking to Joe about them won't work. Instead, he uses sex to steer Joe towards getting better sleep and eating more (after all, Joe needs to be able to keep up with Devil when they're engaged in the very athletic sex that they like and he needs to be well rested and fed to have that stamina, right? LOL!), which was really sweet and also a great way to show how well Devil understood Joe.
Their sexual compatibility and chemistry was incredible and I had no trouble believing that they easily trusted each other and eagerly jumped on this crazy ride together, indulging in intense roughness that was beautifully balanced with intense affection. But fair warning: the BDSM is quite intense and the boys indulge in many kinks (most of which aren't discussed beforehand). This includes . Not only were the scenes in the first half very hot, very well written and I loved how intense they were, but most importantly, I loved how much both boys clearly enjoyed themselves from beginning to end. If you're looking for some wonderful rough alpha male BDSM scenes that are still playful and full of affection, I highly recommend reading the first half of this book.
Unfortunately, the rest of the story was a disappointment. I don't mean to be rude, but it was clear that the author either didn't know how to fully take advantage of the amazing premise she had or she didn't want to because the actual plot was mediocre and at times even amateur.
The whole point of this story was supposed to be Devil and Joe being stuck in the impossible situation of being perfect for each other but being on opposite sides of a battle that will never be won (the law versus the mafia). I was expecting Joe to be doing lots of investigations that bring him across Devil and his family over and over again and I wanted to see how they would navigate the difficulty of wanting to protect each other but not being willing to compromise their own morals (in Joe's case) or the people they loved (in Devil's case). Unfortunately, this barely happened. Every case they got involved in had the investigating and resolution taking place off-page with the author using telling instead of showing to inform readers how it all went down. It felt like the author didn't know how to write such plotlines or wanted to focus on her only two interests: sex scenes and overly emotional conversations/thoughts.
Instead of getting interesting plotlines that properly took advantage of a relationship between an experienced detective and an experienced mafia enforcer, there was endless internal monologuing from the MCs about how they felt about each other and endless overly emotional, sappy conversations with side characters. Not only that, but these conversations (internal and external) happened OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I also got sick and tired of Devil having to have heart-to-heart conversations separately with every member of his family, which was the author's excuse to showcase how lovey-dovey the couples from the previous books were and also served as sequel-bait for characters who will feature in future books. I hate it when authors do this, especially when the scenes are pointless and repetitive.
My other disappointment was that at 50%, both Joe and Devil decide they're 'in love' after having known each other a few days. From there, their thoughts and conversations took up residence in cheese-ville. The dirty talk from previous sex scenes that I had loved was now full of sappy, overly emotional love declarations and cheesy, cringy lines like 'I need to conquer you', which didn't sound like normal human speech at all. It was especially disappointing because this ridiculous sappiness hadn't been part of Devil and Joe's characterizations at the start. What I had loved about their dynamic was that they DIDN'T talk to each other about every tiny thing and they used their actions to communicate instead. All of this disappeared after 50%.
The point where my patience disappeared completely was when
Another example of amateur storytelling was how the author resolved the moral issues between Joe and Devil. Both of them were always adamant that they didn't want to change their loyalties or principles for the other person but this would make a long term relationship between them impossible, so I was very curious how the author would resolve this. Unfortunately, the path she chose was a huge letdown.
It was obvious that the author had no idea how to properly resolve the complex situation she had introduced so she defaulted to the laziest solution possible. What a joke.
I was also very disappointed by the many sloppy errors that the author hadn't bothered correcting. Dialog missing end quote marks or the end quote marks being put at the end of a paragraph instead of where the dialog ended. Using 'you're' instead of 'your', 'were' instead of 'we're' and 'excepted' instead of 'accepted'. But most annoying was having incredibly intense sex scenes being interrupted by the following:
+ Missing quotation marks from an entire chunk of dialog, which made it seem as if the author had randomly switched to 2nd person POV and was talking to me directly
+ Using Angelo's name instead of Devil's in the middle of the scene
+ Joe and Devil teleporting from the floor to Joe's bed and then back to the floor
But my favorite (please note that I mean this sarcastically) error was when Joe refers to Devil as a 'murder victim' instead of a 'murder suspect'. But to give credit where it's due, that one did make me laugh really hard.
Unfortunately, the instalove, lackluster plotting and the lack of proper editing seem to be staples of this author's work. As a result, I'm not interested in reading anything else. However, I loved the BDSM scenes in the first half so much that this book is still a keeper for me and they're the only reason this is getting 3 stars from me.
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this one, but I really liked Devil and Joe's story.
There was so much more to Devil than you get in prior books. I mean you know he loves his family and would do anything for them, but seeing him in a role with a boyfriend? Yeah, I loved him. Joe I was a little unsure about, but he was pretty amazing too.
These two had a lot to work through considering they were on opposite sides of the law, but I love how it all worked out and they deserved it. I just wish we had more of them.
No one wants to pick a favorite...but Devil may have been my favorite in the Marchesi Family series. Devil and Joe’s story was full of so much emotion. The emotions were always so close to the surface with these two. Both men just challenged each other SO much. The push and pull between these two was palpable. The hate sex was seriously off the charts HOT, and cue the blushing and fanning of oneself. This bit of enemies to lovers just packed such an emotional punch. Each man had his own hurts from their past that defined who they were. I loved when they shared those feelings with each other. Baring their souls, almost daring the other to walk away from the realness that had turned into a relationship when neither was looking. Devil and Joe were just so made for each other. In the scheme of the Marchesi series I loved how their story fit into the overall storyline. Everything felt like it fell into place and completed the story all around. This has been one of my favorite series by this author. I can’t wait to see how the spinoff series, Vigilance, unfolds.
If you are a fan of audiobooks, I couldn’t recommend this more. When the narration can make you both blush AND cover your eyes, you know it’s a good one. Michael Dean just blew me away with his narration of Devil, as well as his reading of the whole series. It’s rare for me to only listen to a series, and not have read first. I saw so many recommendations for this series, especially the narration, and it being Michael Dean made me dive right in. I listened to these books back to back to back, and I’m so glad I waited.
“I never stopped hating you. I just started loving you too.”
This book had me hooked from start to finish, I was in love with Devil and Joe instantly. Their first meeting is hot as hell, full of hate and passion all in one. All of the push and pull between these two is stunning, so much intimacy and love/hate feels I adored every moment.
Steam is off the charts when they're together and I love how swap roles, seeing each pov and how they are able to recognise similar feelings in each other. Both have a love for danger and the tension is gorgeous, the conflict and balance they find together. I enjoyed how neither tried to stop the others lifestyle, they had an understanding despite opposite views.
Development of a relationship and love as they slowly start to learn more about each other, reveal their pasts and truths is beautiful. I was in love with their romance! Its so much fun, full of action, struggle and all of the feels which was incredible to read.
A new favourite, Devil and Joe shall definitely stick with me and a great ending to the series. I liked seeing more of the other couples too, such a sweet and fitting end 💕
Im curious about some of the other characters too so may give the spin off books a try.
Okay, babes, Devil was filth in the best way. Like, sinful, corrupt your soul kinda delicious. You’ve got a morally gray hitman and a cinnamon roll who falls way too fast but damn if that tension didn’t grab me by the throat.
What I loved: That possessive, dangerous energy? 10/10. The dirty talk?? Exceptional. Chemistry was instant but somehow still worked. The sex scenes? Baby, I had to pause and fan myself.
What I didn’t like: Insta-love was a bit too fast even for me. The plot kinda dipped halfway. Some scenes felt rushed. I wanted more danger, Devil was hot but not scary enough for a hitman. Still? I devoured it like a midnight snack 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 for the smut 🖤🖤🖤/5 for the plot
OK this is probably my favorite of the three Marchesi brother stories. Devil and Joe were just FIRE together. I loved how strong they were separately and then together - how they each could be in control and then other times were ok with giving that control up.
I love seeing Lucien with Peter a bit more settled and happy, and I loved learning more about Devil.
Fun, sexy, morally grey, and tons of great chemistry. Loved it!
Life is full of the most gorgeous shades of gray and none more so than Devil and the Marchesi family. Even when people *cough Devil* are stubborn, the family is by their side. “All you need to know is that I’m not going to walk away from you, even if you try to arrest me.” So many parts of this book warmed my heart but none more so than when Devil and his cop opened their hearts to each other. They couldn’t be more opposite if they tried—and believe me they tried a lot of things—however, their contrasts click.
Though, Devil and his cop do have some very fiery things in common, like call-out-the-fire-brigade hot. I loved how they constantly fought for dominance no matter which side of the fight they were on and yet, they always found ways to take care of each other and put each other first. When you are loved by a Marchesi, you inherit an incredible family and when I read these books, I feel like a part of it too. You won’t need to compromise to fall in love with Devil, his cop, or this series.
Anyone who's read the first two books in the Marchesi Family series has probably been looking forward to getting Devil's story. For me, I found Devil to be more of an antagonist then Lucien or Angelo, and it certainly shows with his impulsive ideas. And that's why I found his love interest to be the most interesting and unexpected. Devil and Joe - an honest, hardworking cop - and sooo much sexual tension! The relationship arc flows extremely well, from the denial stage all the way through to trust and finally opening up their hearts. I think my absolute favourite thing is getting to see Devil's sofer side - it about melted my heart! There is nothing not to like in this book, especially if you like slightly darker romances with characters who have questionable morals, and a very protective family who would do anything for their own.
Good series. This and the first book were my favorites. Devil was a most complicated character. He needed a relationship different from his cousin's but with the same depth of love.
I had one problem with this series and it was very evident in this book. PRONOUNS! Please tell me why do many writers have problems with the rules for using pronouns. They refer back to the last noun. It is so confusing when one reads a paragraph or two that keep using "he" and "him" but no noun/ name. Sometimes I had to read a section three times to understand which character was doing or thinking or talking.
I'm a big fan of this series and have been looking forward to Devil's story. Devil and Joe, their relationship.. if you could call it that, was intense from the very beginning. The mafia man and the cop, it was always going to be messy. This story has everything. Family, loyalty, plenty of action, super hot and sometimes sweet. Recommend the whole series.
Going into this book, I expected the plot to follow a certain path and, as the story progressed, I found out I was completely right. The plot is pretty predictable here, especially given the way Violet set things up. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but for me, it felt a little formulaic.
As always with this author, I loved the characterization. I thought both Devil and Joe were well drawn and developed. I liked that we got to see inside Devil’s head, as he could come off a little like he didn’t care and reckless in previous books in the series. And he definitely is reckless, but there’s often a method to his madness that makes a lot more sense when we can see his side of things. I also liked that Joe wasn’t willing to compromise his morals, despite his feelings for Devil. Violet did a good job showing Joe’s changing thought process as he learned more about the other side of things, and saw how the Marchesi family works. In the end, he made his choices based on his changing perception and I appreciated that.
The story is an improvement on the first book Lucien of Marchesi Family series. Its actually pains me to say it but its true. Lucien and Peter makes me cringe with their insta lust/love, meanwhile Devil just bit better because this one had some plot. However, its still cliche and predictable came from enemy to lover or forbidden romance story. Also, this story might be a mixture erotica and romance but the relationship between Devil and Joe felt sort of rushed and i missed out on the true romance of them coming together for reasons other than sex.
Devil developed a thing for someone on the other side of the fence. Joe wasn't sure what he was doing but he wanted Devil. It would be the good, bad and ugly before it was all said and done.
This is my first written review so try not to roast me 😂. For me, their relationship was very inconsistent. The beginning was great! I loved the angsty and sexy relationship they had. What I didn't like was that all of a sudden they loved each other. They did not see each other for months and BOOM . . . LOVE. After that, the kinky smut seemed forced and out of place.
I liked this one much more than the first two in the series. Devil may seem the crazy one in the family but at least his relationship with Joe seems more mature.. is not only about "you're mine and there is no negotiation" like the ones in Lucien and Angelo's books, in this one the MC actually talk and discuss what they want... The only thing that bothered me were the mistakes... Devil being called Angelo, describing the state of the mattress when they were on the carpet floor... If I saw them I'm sure any beta reader would have seen them... They were annoying AF.
This is, by far, my favorite of the series. Lucien and Peter were great and Angelo and Cam were wonderful, but Devil and Joe? Fire. The push and pull between these two and the shear steam factor of their relationship was so juicy. Each one being a completely dominate male and always fighting for supremacy made each submission that much sweeter.
I always knew that Devil was so much more than we could see. Just his relationship with Angelo alone was enough to tell you that he had so many layers. Well, we get to peel our sexy onion in this book. He is such a sweetie underneath it all. The way he cares for those around him and the sweet way he cares for Joe was undeniable. I wish he hadn’t doubted himself so much when it came to his family. The one constant in his life has always been Lucien and Angelo and he could have put more faith in that. The demons that haunt Devil made me so sad for him, carrying the burden he has since he was sixteen. These things shaped Devil into the multifaceted person we meet in Lucien’s book.
I enjoyed the constant mental battle that Joe put himself through with regards to Devil’s family and profession. As a cop, he always tried to view things in a black and white way, until Devil makes him dance in the gray. He truly does struggle with how to balance his growing feelings for Devil and justifying the things Devil does, all while falling helplessly in love with the man Devil truly is. It was nice to see the cop come out of his shell and take a chance. Joe really needed to catch a break in life and it seems he finally did with Devil.
From start to finish, I enjoyed their story. Joe’s tacit personality and Devil’s raging sense of humor were highlights for me. (We also get to learn Devil’s real name, FINALLY!) Watching these two fall in love was truly fascinating to watch. I was sad to see their story end, but totally satisfied with the conclusion we got.
Although I really liked Devils story I was a little disappointed. It felt a little off the way Devil was in the 1st 2 books and then this one. It was like he wasnt the same character as before. It was slohhtly anticlimactic as well. All in all its a good read though
