Fourteen years ago, the Beise family just disappeared. Rumors filled the small town of Masterson--everything from mass slaughter to alien abductions.
PAVAD: FBI Agent Miranda Talley had always wondered what happened to her best friend's family.
When human remains are found buried in the Beise family barn, Miranda returns to her Wyoming hometown to find the answers.
With potential PAVAD agent--and sheer pain-in-the-ass--Allan Knight tagging along, Miranda leads her own team of PAVAD agents and the sheriff of Masterson County deep into the secrets of the town she's always loved.
Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.
Disappointed...no hea this time...love story barely begun before they separated...but he mystery and the investigation story were great...Last read June, 2020. Reread July 2021. Worth the time indeed.
Buried Secrets is PAVAD FBI case file number five and concentrates on an entire family in Masterson County that goes missing fourteen years earlier. The case gets reopened when a woman buried in the barn is discovered😳
Miranda gets called in to help investigate a case of a family that went missing years earlier. She was close friends with one of them and has always wondered what happened and why they suddenly disappeared😢 Agent Knight is brought in to observe but they soon realise they are a distraction to the other - due to their attraction❣️
Jac and Max and Clint and Maggie’s stories are hinted at in this one and I can’t wait to dig in to them and find out more soon….😉
Multi-faceted story that this author puts out always amazes me as it feels like there are sooooo many moving parts and she always seems to manage to tie everything together but tell more than one story at the same time - I’m super impressed and awed by her talent🤩
It is the worst FBI case story. Only 1/3 of book is about the murder case. The rest are all about girls and boys. The county cops are in a relationship, the FBI agents are in relationships, even the criminals are in relationships. In the police’s interview room, FBI male agent’s first thought is the female agent who is doing the interview. Disgusting!
What's done in the dark always comes to light. Everyone isn't your friend believe what they reveal of their selves.
Family full of hatred and envy not knowing what is going on with the family they are so envious with. Be careful of who you allow in your circle the end my be nearer than you think.
I have read all of the PAVAD books and this one was a bit different in that there was no resolution between the hero and heroine of the story. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and I had to think back the agent in this one. Well potential agent anyway. Dr. Allan Knight was was assigned this case by the director to see if he would be a fit for a new division in the PAVAD.
This story had everything I come to except from Ms. Brookes except the ending. I gather that this story will spawn a new series, one in which many characters we know from Masterson county will play a part.
I enjoyed the story but I just wish that the ended had tied things up between the two main characters.
This was a bit different than the author's usual "romantic suspense". There were multiple hints at romance, but they seemed like the high school "who do you like?", "who doing what?"...
The suspense was there in the handling of the cold case. Some twists and turns, particularly at the end but otherwise the setting was laid out pretty early. You could get a feel for how much research was needed to bring an old case to conclusion.
As as often true it was a small town event. The agent noted "Needed a score card around here. Small towns." So as usual there were a lot of familial relations to track to make sense of what was happening in the story.
But as usual it provides a bit of a break from some of the other genres a person might read.
It was okay. Way to many names involved to keep track of who was who since they all changed their names when they moved away. It was regarding a murder of a grandmother who they used to live with. Some of of the grandkids she liked some she didn't. She would beat them. This was in a small town. The lady who was working on the case was somehow related to them. The grandmother was found buried in the back yard years ago. The FBI had trouble finding them as they all had changed their names when grandma told them all to leave NOW.
I really enjoy this author's work. Love the storylines, characters and everything about this book and series. You have the ending of one book, but a beginning of another. Download this book last night couldn't put it down to early morning. I would start at the beginning of the series, so you have idea of the characters and the families. Recommended this author.
This was a very good book! As with the other Case File books, the story was more about the case. Early stages of romance for several couples was set up for later books. One interesting note: this book connected PAVAD to Finley Creek, TX and Masterson, Wyoming. I can’t wait to see whose story is next!
Loved this book. The characters were interesting, the plot multifaceted and the ways and means of law enforcement be it in the local arena or the big guns in Washington, was breathtaking! I will enjoy the rest of this series!!
Miranda handled the PAVAD case with a number of issues in the investigation. A surprise ends near the end. The story ends with Miranda in the hospital and serious injuries. The suspected romance didn’t develop, but the story will continue.
Such a confusing book. Repeating details, misspelled words, and you need a family tree to keep it all straight. Most of the names thrown out are unnecessary and are never characters prudent to the story.
This book is a great read by Calle J. Brookes that brings together her Masterson and PAVID series with some elements of the Finley Creek series as well. She does an excellent job of blending these into a suspenseful storyline.
I enjoyed the mystery but was disappointed that Talley and Knight’s romance was over before it began. Life is not one big romance but they just seemed to suit one another well.

Miranda proves to be one tough cookie when she comes to her hometown to help investigate a murder. Excitement, mystery and danger at the turn of every page!
