Tyler is a sexy young newbie to the New York City leather scene. When he eyes a muscled, masked stranger, his hunky best friend Andrés warns him to be careful due to the string of recent murders in the leather community.
The masked stranger hides more than his face, and that is revealed when you go back far enough. True evil is made, not born.
Bestselling author of horror, thrillers, sci-fi and m/m romance, including The Whistler, I'm the Last Face You'll Ever See, The Four Corners of Horror and upcoming release They Kill.
Like his idol Alfred Hitchcock, he strives to bring suspense to his books.
Four gay guys from the leather community were brutally murdered It's important to keep your eyes open. At the leather bar, a young attractive guy has only eyes for the bulk of a man with a leather head on whose eyes are laser-focused at him.
Ehm.. confession... I was scared as shit, honest I was, my heart and head hurt AF. My heart raced maniacally from fear. Warning, don't get attached, just don't, don't read alone in bed with the lights out, just don't.
"Payback is a bitch and now so are you"
There is an incredible good suspenseful plot to find here. Jeeez Alternating between past, present, and weeks earlier we are witness of how Leather Head works. All intriguingly, captivating and convincingly written with a deadly pace, awesomeness! The genius part here is you get in the head of someone and see through their eyes till the very end. It's terrifying. So masterly done!
Wow. I literally just finished this read and I know I'll never forget it.
Just to preface this, I have not read Leather Head, so this was my first glimpse into this character, but it was a wild ride. I'm so intrigued to continue on!
This prequel begins on a regular club night in the city, rumors going around about a crazed leather killer on the loose. As far as Tyler is concerned, there's no way that he'd be at this bar on this night, looking to hook up. So, when Tyler is entranced by the super hot, super built, tall piece of muscle in leather, he throws all worry out the window.
The story continues on with glimpses into Leather Head's past evenings out, past pick ups, and past deviant activities. All stories combined, Leather Head is born and his past is revealed, shedding light on the evil that manifested inside of him. I was so caught up in the descriptive language and spellbinding story, I couldn't put it down. Be wary of goosebumps!
As a fan of Matt Converse's writing already, I was eager to try this out, even if blood, gore and leather aren't typically my thing. The story is told so well and from such a unique perspective, I couldn't help but fall into it and hang on until it was over. It was definitely worth the time!
Where The Evil Begins is a good book to start the series. It will pique your interest into continuing the series. I know it has for me.
This story will give you chills. In the best way a horror book can. This book will give you insight into Leather Head, the main thriller and killer. I felt some empathy for Leather Head. Did I just say that? Yes. I am a weirdo.
As a whole, this book was everything I was expecting and a bit more with the background story. I was creeped out and it had my pulse racing. YES! I enjoyed the author’s writing style and look forward to reading the next book! I give this 4 stars.

So, I have to be careful, because I don’t want to give anything away, but if you’ve read Leather Head, then you already know a lot of what is going on. If you haven’t, you need to. I will tell you right now though, Matt’s books are not for the faint of heart. They are horror stories. Truly. But if you love a good horror, then these are the books for you.
This is the only book where I can think I actually felt sorry for the serial killer. At one point, at least. Because it’s true, evil is made. And Leather’s evil was definitely made. The only thing is, he could have changed his ways, but he let the evil and hate consume him and make him who he is. And Tyler is his next mark. In spite of his friend warning him not to go.
There’s not a whole lot more I can say without giving away so much. But I do have to say, Matt’s done it again. He knows his horror and he does it well. I love his books. So much. There’s just something about the writing, even though a lot of it is depraved, because…hello, horror. But it’s just so good. So yeah, it’s another hit for me. And I can’t wait to see where he’s going to go next.
ohh this was amazing and creepy.. wonderful and terrifying.. this was an amazing horror story.. nothing hea involved.. and it helped me understand leather head better.. amazing!
This book had my heart pounding. Leather Head is a really scary man. I did cry for him after reading about his childhood. Thank you Matt Converse for all your hard work getting these great books out to us. Loved this book.
Matt Converse's Where Evil Begins is a well written thriller set within the M/M leather community. The protagonist is a young man in conflict with his true identity. He goes to war with himself over being gay without the substructure of his family, especially his barbaric and bigoted father.
All these components mold this young man into the "monster" he is. This book demonstrates that we all carry our childhood traumas with us perpetually forever.
Leather Head seems to be of the opinion that he must loathe gay males because it is intergrated into his psyche.
Where Evil Begins is a well thought out thriller filled with angst and shows the psychotic break of a serial killer.
Matt Converse gives us a villain to hate but also shows us that even pitch black sometimes needs brightness.
There's a serial killer on the loose and meeting strangers is getting dangerous! Five stars! Highly enjoyed this! Leather Face has made an amazing introduction.
In NYC there are clubs that cater to the “leather kink”, The Hammer, The Guillotine and The Eagle. Some young men go out to experiment and some have already experienced the “leather kink” to some degree.
Three young men have met their fate in the dark world: Karl, two weeks earlier; Asian twins: Ken and Kyle, ten days later and TJ one week after. There’s room for one more!
Even after brutal murders of several young men, Tyler has decided to go out. He’s meeting his friend Andres, whose older, as Tyler has turned twenty-one. Tyler and Andres are strictly friends. Andres worries about Tyler’s interest in the leather scene and warns him to be careful.
In the past….. At the age of fifteen, a young man, begins to explore his feelings. But one day his private exploration is discovered. The trauma and abuses he faces will lead to shame, betrayal and take him to the darkside.
“Where Evil Begins” is a dark theme with S&M/leather scene, it’s gruesome and a psychological thriller. Matt Converse briefly profiles the victims first, then Tyler and the warnings he receives from his friend Andres. It seems that the curiosity of these young gay men is so strong that they never stop to think that their lives could be in danger.
Then Converse will introduce a young teenager whose life of exploration is just beginning and with the devastating outcome, it leads the young man to a choice of destruction on many levels.
There’s several ways to read this story: just for fun, horror, thrills, or delving into the psychological side of it. It’s all up to the reader. I think the moral of the story is; be sure you have a good, solid friend that will care enough to warn you when you’re out experimenting!
I wanted a horror book with gay characters, but I wasn't looking for a book where the villain is killing people never hey are gay guys. I was skimming this because it made me cringe. Someone might like it but I did not.
I was relieved that Tyler and Andre (might spelled that wrong) escaped. That was whole reason gave this two stars. This guy leather head went around killing gay guys because what his dad did to him when was 15 while is also horrible.
Triggers for rape and abuse. I doubt I continue this series either. If this is what the books are about I don't want see gay guys murdered just cause.
So, this really wasn't my cup of tea. It's well written for what it is but there's not much story beyond recounting current events and then looking back at what started it all. Spoiler: the really didn't understand why Leather Head went after gays if he himself identified as gay. It's like he literally rewired himself to become his father - which doesn't make sense since he hated his father. Just not something I'd read as a general rule and didn't even qualify as erotic horror.
DNF Read as a first book from this series. A great start as Tyler's in a club but the air is fulled with tentions due to a serial murders lately. Okay so this is not for the faint at heart readers. Multiple death scenes are included. I gave this one ago, but I'm gonna pass at 46%. I've loved the authors other books..
This is about as dark as it gets. While looking into it you do get a warning and someone said they understood him. Nope I don’t but it’s and excellent well written extremely dark story . Loved this prequel well worth 5* and now I’m going to read the main event . Highly recommended for lovers of dark stories
Can't wait to read more. Characters are totally believeable. Was exciting and thrilling. Like watching a t.v cop show. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes crime books.
