Someone wants all the vampires dead. They may have found the perfect weapon.
Weirdest crime scene ever? Check. Guy eaten by a sentient wall? Check.
Every shady government agency in existence playing coverup? Check.
But is it murder?
Nick Tanaka, vampire homicide detective for the NYPD, stumbles into a political minefield when their new Midnight, a rookie vampire cop straight out of the police academy, shows up dead inside a high security vault. Morley, Nick’s boss, wants answers, but no one wants the NYPD on the case.
As a favor to Morley, Nick agrees to help, going to his contacts in the military-industrial complex to try and find answers.
Instead, he uncovers a conspiracy led by a murderous fanatic and his band of “blood-purity” crazies, who appear to want nothing less than all-out race war.
Worse, his hybrid girlfriend, Wynter James, is now in their crosshairs, too.
Book #4 of the Vampire Detective Midnight series.
VAMPIRE DETECTIVE MIDNIGHT is a romantic science fiction and fantasy series set in a futuristic, dystopian New York populated by vampires, humans and psychics trying to rebuild their world after a devastating race war nearly obliterates the previous one.
A spinoff of the Quentin Black Mystery series, it features vampire with a past and homicide detective, Naoko “Nick” Tanaka, who gets transferred to the NYPD after a bad incident in Los Angeles forces him to start a new life. Nick works as a “Midnight,” or vampire in the employ of the human police department, but when he arrives in New York, he really just wants to be left alone to work, surf, and deal with his immortality in peace.
Life, and the residents of New York, clearly have other ideas

What a book. It takes you and holds you hostage until you get to the end. The detective is one super guy that is going to do his job well. Loved the book.
Once again, I feel like I’ve run face first into my usual conundrum: the more I loved a book, the fewer words I have about it. This story pulled me in from the very first words. And I could only hang on for dear life as I desperately flipped pages to find out what was around the next corner. It doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger, per se, but it opens things up for so many possibilities to come that I’m kind of left snarling in frustration that I can’t move on to the next book immediately. There are tantalizing revelations that while they make me “squee!” in delight, have also left me questioning if I’m missing vital clues from the books I haven’t yet read in the Bridge & Sword and Quentin Black series. One thing I can say for certain, I can’t wait to find out what comes next. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
This series is just blowing my mind! I love it! There are plots with in plots, fantastical action and boat loads of angst. This is one of the best sci fi series I've read in a good long while! I love Nick ! Highly recommended.
“Fangs & Metal” the fourth book in the ‘Vampire Detective Midnight Series’ by JC Andrijeski is the kind of book that holds you on its grip until the end of the story. What originally began as an spin-off of the “Quentin Black Series” following Naoko “Nick” Tanaka, second chance after being transferred to New York, has become wonderful series on its own, capable to swoon in its bane even the most hardcore fan of “Quentin Black” a very closely second the Quentin throne… don’t tell him… ever.
Nick Tanaka continues to work the night-shift in the NYPD, as a state regulated vampire, a “midnight”, assisting the human police in their “more peculiar” cases. Seemed a totally good idea at the moment, do your job, keep out of trouble and be let alone…. well… best laid plans as you know. Even if Tanaka’s to go unnoticed, did not really work from the very beginning, he is adapting quite well, all things considered, that is after the wall ate the victim…. wait.. what? A “living” wall ate someone? Yes… it cannot get weirder than that… can it?
As the new rookie in Tanaka’s unit is found dead inside a high security vault, all bets are off. Nick Tanaka has seen some really weird stuff firsthand, but this surely beats them all. The story evolves into a complex conspiracy unearthing links to military technological firms and race fanatics which are fully invested in funding a total race war of unexpected consequences….. and right in the middle of it… you guess it… Nick “please just let me alone” Tanaka. This guy really needs a new fairy-godmother…. or rather not… because following Tanaka in his quest to reveal the truth is a pleasure we surely do not want to live without. Even when the action takes over our own capacity to react coherently to it 😉
JC Andrijeski rare ability to create whole new worlds, alien and familiar at the same time and populating them with interesting characters is unattainable. With a fluid, fast paced, vivid and always delightful writing style, she excels in getting across the action elements without disregarding the more subtle romantic aspects of the story, possibly making Tanaka into one of the most human vampires you would ever come across, as well as one of the characters that have undergo the highest growth since we first meet him in the “Quentin Black Series”.
Previous knowledge of the original series is by not means necessary to enjoy the “Vampire Detective Midnight” Series, I will even go so far as to affirm that you could enjoy “’Fangs & Metal” without any previous know-how of Tanaka, will nevertheless recommend the lecture of the “Quentin Black Series”…. Just because… do you really want to miss on this wonderful world? No, you don’t!
Just a little word of caution, these are wonderful series for mature readers that appreciate multidimensional characters and new perspectives.
Not only is Nick Tanaka a bad boyfriend, but he is also a bad NYPD officer. When Wynter, his girlfriend (mate), is in the middle of possible danger and people tell him to stay out of it for his own good, he can't stop himself from doing exactly what he is told not to do and find a way to get to her. Even though she is not in as much danger as he is when he exposes his presence. His presence will trigger all the wrong things. Wynter will be distracted and as a result, not be able to perform and destroy the being that is killing vampires. The killer metal machine thing wants Nick, not Wynter. But Nick doesn't care, he abandons all sense, loses his mind and does everything in his power to find Wynter. And everything feared happens, just like they told him it would. Lots of vampire action here. Some good writing showing his skills as a vampire.
Nick always refers to Wynter as his girlfriend and sometimes as his wife, but I always think of them as mates. Besides they act like mates. When Nicks past relationship with his former mate Dalejem comes up Wynter is deeply hurt. If you have read the Quentin Black series, you are familiar with Nick and his mate Dalejem. In this book we get small spurts of their relationship. I wish we could get more even though this book is not about them. Malek skims over the dynamics of Nicks relationship with Dalejem to calm Wynter and its through Malek that we get a little insight into Dalejem.
Although this book was good, I didn't like it as much as the first 3 books. This book felt more like a murder mystery whodoneit book than a vampire, seer paranormal with a mystery metal vampire killer book. I wanted more romance. I wanted them to get a deeper understanding of being mates. It feels like Nick is always being the asshole when Wynter is involved. There are always more scenes with Nick getting nuclear instead of him being the vampire who loves his seer. Then they make up, the crime is solved, and the book is over.
Overall, Nick was not my favorite person in this book. He is an asshole almost throughout the entire book. In this book, my favorite person is Malek. I hope the next book is better.
The more I sink into this complex world, the more amazed I get. Seers, vampires, humans, hybrids - a variety of supernaturals living among ordinary people, yet facing the same issues the humanity faces in reality (maybe only a bit escalated). Racism, fanatics, individuals with their own agendas convinced their ideas are the best to purge the world of all evil. What Nick Tanaka has to face in his scope of detective work is always a lot of danger and evil, yet the current case exceeds all expectations. Could you imagine a living metal that devours living beings alive? That is one hell of a painful death...And that's not the end of it. Crazy, fast pacing thriller blended with sci-fi and fantasy set into a world that never ceases to surprise. The main characters, even though supernaturals, have a lot of humanity in them, with their flaws and weaknesses and inclinations to overreactions or drama (in some cases). The dynamics between the characters is changing at every turn, keeping the reader engaged and despite many negative emotions driving the character's behavior their interactions can be entertaining or endearing in the end. I devoured the whole book in one afternoon (after finally finding a time to sit down and read it), and it was one hell of a ride. The ending is kind of a cliffhanger, hinting that nothing is over yet, and with a promise the next book will be even more epic than the previous ones.
NYPD homicide vampire detective Nick Tanaka finds himself in another dramatic story which turns into something both weird and personal. Weird as it starts with a crime scene where a sentient wall eats a guy and personal because one part of the ultimate aim of the whole situation is to kill all vampires and especially to kill him too. Add to that shady government agencies trying to cover things up and you have the perfect murder plot for Nick to solve. It all becomes much more urgent when it becomes obvious that race-purity fanatics want to dispose of all hybrids as part of starting another race war and that Nick's girlfriend Wynter James is firmly in the crosshairs.
Wow just wow. There were revelations from the past, promise for stories in the future and a complex situation as Nick struggled with everything that was thrown at him both mentally, emotionally and physically. Some parts were like a rollercoaster, some like an unfinished storyline that will be finalised in later books and so much drama I wondered if all the main characters would survive by the end of this book. Well written and easy to read, I loved this story which kept me captivated from the start to the finish. My only issue is how I am going to wait for the next book to be written!
History repeating! It seems wherever Nick Tanaka ends up he is right in the thick of it. That's a given, but this time extremely personal things make him even more involved. As always Ms Andrijeski sets a breathtaking pace telling this story with her usual attention to detail. But while the world is, again, in race-turmoil, she throws in a shocker! At the first mention I literally missed a heartbeat! Gaos!!! I will not say more, just this much, think of my fragile blood pressure when you write the next installment please! Or, come to think of it, no, don't. I'll survive your shockers as long as you produce them! Please do!
This book was so riveting that I could not put it down. Nick Tanaka is a Midnight for the NYPD. A Midnight is a vampire who is employed by the NYPD. When two murder victims are found in the corridor of a vault and the bodies are infused in the ceiling things only get crazier, more complicated, more stressful and way more dangerous than anyone could possibly imagine. Everyones lives are at risk if a solution is not found. Nick is determined to be part of the solution even if he was told he was a main target and to stay away by friends, associates and his NYPD boss.
Nick Tanaka, vampire homicide detective for the NYPD, is back in the latest installment of JC Andrijeski’s epically wonderful mashup sci-fi vampire detective series, Vampire Detective Midnight. Fans of the series can rejoice, as Fang & Metal (Book 4) lives up to the high standard set by its predecessors, even if it works perfectly fine stand-alone (though newcomers should know that enjoyment will be enhanced by knowing the backstory in books 1 to 3). Great lead and supporting characters and great writing of a superb plot once again equals a fun abs exciting book with great twists and turns that’s totally enjoyable. Also easy to highly recommend.
This started off in a way that really caught me unprepared for what was coming. I was so Frozen, compelled to slow my brain and the reading of the text. Follow the same pace as the characters in the first pages. As you yourselves read the first chapter you will understand what I mean. I was exhausted by the time I finished the book. I read it right through with one break for a nap. At one point in the begining I got a fright and spilled my coffee on myself. That never happens believe me! This really is a brilliant story I absolutely loved it.
I just love this series and the series it came from. It flows, has angst, has action and a torn hero with a tormented past. The one thing this author manages is tension, tension between characters, between warring factions, between lovers, and this tension keeps you glued to the page. And, the sexual tension is hot but not just physically, emotionally as well and that is what keeps me reading and keeps me waiting for the next book.
Good book. It's interesting, that JC plot for this series has a lot of references to race problems of America. The way Vampires are watched/tracked, that they have to have permission to go anywhere, and they are told who they can love. These books make me uncomfortable, especially if JC decides to incorporate a 'race war' in further books. Either way, they are very well written and an amazing plot, just not a comfortable plot.
Fang & Metal is another great book in the series. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. Detective Midnight, Nick, continues to try and make sense of events and people that seem to conspire against him. And in a world where authorities can wipe his memory or discard him in pieces. This is a beautifully written novel with mystery and murder in abundance. I loved it and the bonus epilogue!!!
Still not convinced about this series. I so loved the Bridge & Sword and even Quentin Black. I get tired of Nick being so cranky all the time and the romance with Wynter just isn't there (especially after his hot relationship with mate Dalejem from the other series). Even the action is not up to par. And I don't like the stylistic affectation of constant repetition in the descriptions.
Fang and Metal, book 4 of the Vampire Detective Midnight series, is a book I picked up through Kindle Unlimited. I'll never get used to this author's ability to twist a plot. Andrijeski plays a long game, weaving small (and seemingly insignificant) details into her stories then surprising the reader with a huge reveal. Well done.
Awesome read. The plots keep getting thicker. Action, drama, suspense, and for sure a collective mystery that leads you down a dark alley of death. Race wars, purist, vampires, seers(where they heck did they go?)and why can't Nick remember. Argh! The suspense intrigues me. Thank you JC for keeping it on KU.
As one of her biggest fans, I have to tell you... JC outdid herself this time. This is one helluva scary book! It’s one of those stories where you have to force yourself to close the book because at some point you just have to go to bed. So, I’d say it’s a 6-star book!
Things are getting more & more stressful and worlds, time & characters are beginning to overlap. Great for us, not so much for the characters. More history, more clues and way more involvement.
This book was a bit underwhelming for the action packed books Andrijeski normally writes. Or perhaps my standards have raised over the course of reading Quentin Black LOL. Hope next book delivers, I really liked the book about Nick fighting in the pits, and I'm really dying to know what Brick cooked up in his little cult of the White Death.
As the series progresses you the reader are learning about hidden stories inside the main story. In this story we have unusual murders committed and it is from something created by the owner of Archangel. The plot thickens because someone is out to kill Nick in an interesting way. I cannot go into detail because it would spoil the book! Needless to say you will find that Nick and Wynter are mated and everyone is trying to prevent Nick from being killed as well as lots of vampires. Do we have also another hidden story involving seers and possibly another war. You will love the book and find the bond between Nick snd Wynter different! Enjoy!
