This was the first book on punk that I had ever seen and was the first of many that I bought. It was 1977 and punk has just started to make it’s way across the USA. In Detroit we already had a small but very creative scene centered around Bookie’s, but all our attention was riveted on the UK. The Damned were the first to have a record out, but I knew very little about all of these other bands like the Adverts, Generation X, 999 other than their name and a picture in the NME.
Julie Davis’s book was my first glimpse in UK punk and it contains dozens of articles, show reviews and interviews with the first wave of the British punk movement as well as American bands like the Ramones and Television. Some of the writing is brilliant – some is amateurish and crude but it captures the essence of punk rock and puts you in the front row at a Pistols gig in 1977. Punk was still fun and new bands were popping up every week – this was “the golden age of rock & roll” and I’m really surprised that this book was never reprinted. Highly recommended!
