Until she was 10, Flynn didn’t even know her real name. Her adoptive parents have always kept her past a secret, but one mysterious note transforms her world and sets her on a path to discover who she really is. How did she get the burn that covers most of her face? And could she really have a twin?

Packed off to a boarding school for misfits, Flynn tries to adjust to the unfair rules and stomach-churning soup while making friends with her unusual classmates. All the while, she receives more cryptic messages that slowly bring her closer to her true identity.

Bursting with magic, intrigue and humour, School for Nobodies is a delightful debut about the beauty of not fitting in.

This was such a fun, magical, fast read! I found the whole story so intriguing!-From Flynn & her past, the events that happen in the beginning of the book, & the 2 schools beside each other. I also found the circus backstory just as intriguing, & all of our characters-each so different, yet easily identifiable.

One thing I didn’t like that comes up a couple times is about a circus itself. This is my personal belief/opinion. But it says there are good circuses & bad-the bad treat the animals horribly, & the good know the animals will perform when they are happy & well cared for. That’s all well & good, but I would never take a circus at their word they are treating them well 1st of all. 2nd of all-it’s besides the point anyway..these are WILD animals, they are not here to happily perform for us. No matter how well you may treat them, they are not happy like that. It’s mentioned again later in a different way- that training a lion is different than taming....I have the same argument lol Kids won’t yet have these strong beliefs for the most part though lol & they will absolutely love this regardless of all of that, I’m sure.

I loved all of the kids-even Rule Boy grew on me, & I couldn’t stand him to start with lol. Flynn did get on my nerves some about 3/4 into the book, but I couldn’t be annoyed, because she had every reason & every right to want what she wanted bad enough to be that way. Mr. Gold has my entire heart though. What an amazing character. Feral was next in line for my heart though. Great message about enjoying what’s in front of you, & what you have. Live in the moment, enjoy the present. It made me smile so big when Flynn asks if that’s why they call it the present? Because it’s like a special gift. So good. Amazing cover by the talented Thy Bui too!💜

Claudia is the adopted child of Sonia and Claude—whom she doesn't like very much. She loves circuses and craves to watch a show but her parents would never let her. One day she finds that her actual name is Flynn. She probes her parents for more info about her biological parents and understands that they died in a fire and that's how she got her scar on her face. That's when magic comes to help her and it promises to guide her to her twin—who did not die in the fire. Flynn is thrilled beyond words. When she is sent to a boarding school by her adoptive parents—thanks to her being super naughty—she realizes to her misery that she is sent to the school of nobodies, not exactly the school her twin goes to. She wants to find a way to communicate with her twin in the next door school—the nice school with junk food and swimming pools. Will she find her family?

What I loved:
The way it is told! It reads exactly like how a middle grade book should read. I enjoyed the pacing, Flynn's anxiety, her dream to be reunited with her twin, her confusion about magic mirrors and talking birds and also her dilemma on whom to trust and what is the truth. Even though this is a school for nobodies, it doesn't hit off as the 'perfect, we are all friends' kind of place. I loved that. The other children in the school are referred to by the name Flynn gives them-Custard, Rule Boy, Saddo and Feral and there's Miss. Cruet and Mr. Gold too. Flynn loves Mr. Gold's stories but soon has her doubts on how much of his stories are fabricated and what is the truth.

What I would've liked to be better:
Flynn is sad (understandable) about the huge burn scar on her face. She feels it is ugly and that she is ugly. While these sentiments are understandable, esp in a child, I wish there was a more pronounced statement at the end of the book that such marks do not matter. It would have made a powerful message.

Lovely read and would recommend it for your little ones.

Much thanks to Pushkin for an e- copy of the book. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to Pushkin Press for the review copy of this book, it has not affected my honest review.

I loved the cover of this one from the first glance and I was so curious about the plot from the description. The idea that her whole life is shadowed in secrets was fascinating to me and I liked the way that it was played out during the book. The plot isn’t so complex as to be dense, but is definitely interesting enough to keep a reader guessing. I enjoyed piecing together the clues (and coming to some conclusions faster than Flynn was very very stressful) and I think that middle-grade aged readers will adore unravelling the mysteries of the School for Nobodies and Flynn’s past. There were some facets of the plot that I didn’t put together until the last minute, and while I found the ending to be a little bit suddenly concluded, I think that’s my adult brain talking and children would like the way it’s neatly wrapped up.

The characters were the real treat in this book. There are five children at the School for Nobodies, each having their name taken from them on their first day at the school. Instead, Flynn refers to them by the name she’s given them: Custard, Rule Boy, Saddo and Feral. Throughout the book they slowly become friends despite their differences, and I found the book’s messages about friendship really sweet and heart-warming. Their circus gives them something to work on together, and they focus on finding each other’s strengths so that everyone can be involved in the performance – a satisfying change from Flynn’s early desires to be the only one in the show. I won’t spoil anything with details, but I also loved the way the book challenged the idea of ‘nobodies’ and uplifted individuality.

The only thing I’d like to have seen challenged a bit more was the idea of Flynn’s facial burn as ‘ugly’. She called it ugly all the way through the book and another child commented on it at one point – all of which I could live with if the idea was robustly challenged. Instead, as far as I can tell, Flynn was still believing the same thing at the end of the book, which I didn’t love. I hate to think of young readers who could relate to Flynn (whether from burns or birthmarks) thinking that they’re ugly without challenge. However I do concede that I don’t relate to Flynn in that way so the representation isn’t mine to comment on.

Overall this is a gorgeous children’s book and a must read for anyone looking for a little circus magic and a story about finding family where you are, with mystery aspects and a little danger thrown in to keep things interesting!

3 acrobatic stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm giving this book 3 stars because whilst it was fun and entertaining, it just didn't wow me enough. The story is interesting but very predictable and the characters are fun and lovable but not necessarily explored in depth.

School for nobodies follows Flynn as she tries to uncover her past and the mystery surrounding her real family. She loves the circus and she would love to find out who her real parents were and what happened to them. After purposefully misbehaving, Flynn ends up sent to a boarding school where she believes her twin sister lives. Upon arrival, Flynn realises she was in fact sent to the School for Nobodies instead of being sent to the wonderfully rich boarding school her twin sister is meant to be at.

With the help of her three friends at the School for Nobodies and her teacher Mr Gold, Flynn works toward putting up a circus show at the school and also toward finding the truth about her past.

This is fast paced story, really easy read and highly entertaining.

Claudia is obsessed with the circus but her strict, adopted parents would never let her go somewhere so common! While they outwardly giver her everything a child could want, all she really wants is a loving family and affection.
I read this book in a day. I was caught up in Claudia's yearning to find out the truth about herself, her real name, and her family. It had such a lovely ending.

A wonderful and well written book for children at 8 plus. I don't remember the last time I read something as good as School for nobodies.
Susie shows she is the best children story writer currently out there, she is simply unique. I couldn't put the book down, it certainly make my day. Thank you Ms Bower

The cover attracted me to this novel. My niece will love it but I got first dibs as I started reading and found I couldn't stop. It's such a lovely and colourful story. If I was still a child, I'd want to go to the School for Nobodies. It beats boring old Mallory Towers any day, although I'm not sure about the food. It really is a fantastic story which is beautifully written too.

Excellent, pertinent book for the 9-11 year group. Nice sense of jeopardy and the main character is very engaging. I especially liked the background of what it is like to be part of an acting troupe and the world the author creates is imaginative and easy to access.

School for Nobodies is an unusual adventure story, about a girl who doesn’t even know her real name, and how she finds it, and true family. It was a little too odd for my taste, but nonetheless it is well written, and enjoyable. The characters all have their own motivations, and I thought that the interactions of the children, in particular, seemed realistic.

I wouldn’t recommend this book for younger children, as there’s talk of people dying in fires, which may be a little too frightening. However, for older children, it would be an exciting adventure, with magic and a happy ending.

I was given a free copy of this book. My opinions are my own.

I don’t typically write reviews but today I’m making an exception. I bought this to pre read before reading to my daughters, I will now be recommending to by my other bookish friends, parents or not because it’s completely brilliant! I was absolutely hooked from the start. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone but it is magical, uplifting, deeply immersive and I’m going to go out and get the paperback because it deserves a prime spot on my bookcase. I wish I hadn’t read it so I could go and read it again. And yes I’m going to relish reading this brilliant book to my daughters, individually, so I get to read it twice over.

I adored School for Nobodies. Flynn is a wonderful multifaceted protagonist, and I was rooting for her to unravel the mystery of her past from the first sentence. The light sprinkle of magic over the story, made it both intriguing and unique.

School for Nobodies was an interesting mix of magic, mystery which I really enjoyed. Flynn was okay as a main character but found her to be a little bit gullible but the side characters really brought the story to life. The most outstanding part of this book was that Susie went deliciously dark when she needed to and that helped with the atmosphere. Susie also put so many twists and turns and the short chapters really upped the anti and I loved that.

For all the above reasons School for Nobodies receives 4 stars

I adored everything about Susie Bower’s enchanting debut! Bursting with magic and mystery, The School of Nobodies has all the makings of a classic - a fearless heroine in search of her past, a peculiar school and its class of ‘nobodies’, a mysterious and magical circus that harbours some buried family secrets, and an evil, fire-breathing villain seeking a sinister revenge.

Beautifully written and richly atmospheric, Bower’s story of family, friendship and courage gracefully twirls and twists between the pages, captivating your imagination and attention completely.
