An excellent second volume in the series. Full review below.

Theresa Linden is one of my contemporary Catholic and Christian authors. Everything I have read from her has been impressive. I have reread a few of her books myself, and reread others with one or more of my children. My children are all through their first communion, but even so we love this book and this series. I am a fan of all of Linden’s writings, but this series geared for a younger audience than her other works is excellent and a great addition to the canon of her work.

As is obvious by the series title this series is based on the Armour of God:

“Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So, stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
~ Ephesians 6:13-17

The chapters in the story are:
1. Falling
2. The Virtue
3. Oh Henry
4. A Plea For Help
5. Permission
6. The Right Thing
7. Angry
8. Falling Again
9. A Dragon-Sized Hole
10. A Plan
11. Threats
12. The Fight
13. About Honor
14. The Breastplate of Righteousness

And between many of the chapters are Brother Coll’s Catechism Lesson, there are 7 of these lessons. This is the continuing story of George Pennington. He is a young lad who is attending knight’s school. To graduate they must obtain the 6 pieces of the armor of God. Six levels of training to become a squire. In the first volume, Belt of Truth, only some of the classmates do not get their belt. And it was very close for George. George learned the value of truth, even if you need to admit to lies, and mistakes you have made. Robyn Haylan and Erik, Georges younger brother continue to be good influences. But Henry and Otho continue to provide temptations. But George must learn a new lesson if he is going to gain the next piece of armor.

George struggles with wanting to help, to do the right thing, and to be obedient to his father. As he works his way through the problems, he gains insight. And comes to realize that as Sir Lucian states:

“When a knight sees another going in the wrong direction, the knight will do all he can to help the other do the right thing.”

But can George figure out how to do so. Can he gain the Breastplate of Righteousness or will he flunk out of Knight’s school? Or will he lose his friend forever? But to find out you will need to read this wonderful little volume.

Another great read in what is shaping up to be an excellent series. Great for the youngsters in your life, or for some of us that are just young at heart.

This series (of which this is book two) could just about be titled "How to Teach Your Kids True Virtue Without Them Noticing." This story, although a short and easy read, is not only super fun to read and sprinkled with Linden's usual humor, but loaded with beautiful examples of Christian virtue: how to stand firm for what you know is right, what true friendship is really about, how to react to injustice, how to help others in a way that is Christlike . . . the list goes on and on. And the wonderful thing is that these lessons are brought to a level that children can understand, relate to, and put into practice in their own lives.

It's been several months since I read the first book, "Belt of Truth," so I really enjoyed re-meeting George and his friends (or in this case, sort-of-friends), and seeing how their adventures continue from the last installment. I'm so excited to see how the upcoming books will turn out as Linden goes through all the parts of Armor in St. Paul's famous epistle. Books like this are so needed today for our children and I can't recommend this series highly enough!

Do you remember reading chapter books, eagerly flipping pages, sometimes peeking ahead for the pictures? I do! And Theresa Linden's Armor of God series takes me right back to those early elementary days when I zipped through chapter books.

Best of all, these stories are engaging for children. Realistic scenarios for characters of their age yet with a bit of adventure and intrigue (can you say one-armed, dragon-slaying knight?) that add a fantastical element.

I'll be reading these books aloud to my youngest children, and I think they'll be wanting to re-read on their own, especially as they are both just around the age or reason when they are considering right from wrong, especially in context of receiving Catholic sacraments.

Full disclosure, I edited this book, but that doesn't negate my experience as a child and a mom. These are great little books.

Update: Gave this to my 7 year old nephew and he devoured it. Even his older siblings loved reading it!

George Pennington struggles with doing the right thing. His friend Henry tempts him to cover up his disobedience. But George wants the Breastplate of Righteousness as much as he wants Henry's friendship. What is a 9 year old boy to do?

Great series to teach right and wrong and facing the consequences of what we do.

I love the idea of writing a book for each piece of the armor of God. George must earn his Breastplate of Righteousness by navigating the tricky waters of helping a friend, without lying or disobeying. His friend, Henry put a hole in his roof and wants George to help him secretly fix it. But George has already earned his Belt of Truth, and knows that lying is never a good thing. Will Henry be discovered by his father? In their tiny medieval village, news travels fast and good people come forward to help the boys realize the benefits of virtue. Definitely get this series for your First Communicants. I know I will!
