Rebecca L. Johnson is the award-winning author that offers a series of scientific books to explore, this one being a realistic depiction of the Sonoran Desert, that would be wonderful additions to an elementary classroom. The illustrations, created by Phyllis V. Saroff, are beautiful and unique, a fun addition to photographs, that offer bonus information throughout the book. A Walk in the Desert offers all the basic text features as most informational books in a more subtle and realistic approach that children can learn from and enjoy.
This was a really nice overview of life in a specific desert in North America. It covered all kind of animals and plants, and how they interacted with different parts of the day in dealing with the heat. I liked the wealth of nice-quality photographs. The text was enjoyable to read. There were a few parts that I felt dragged a little, like toward the end, but overall, a very nice book to accompany your studies of the desert.
This book is informative and readily enjoyed by my 4th grade students. It is one of a series of books, each about a different biome. They are a very palatable resource for science reading in a classroom. The look of the book is beautiful, and it includes wonderful photos, a map and stunning sketches.
Nice book with easy words and big text for easy reading. This book talks in a story-line so it isn't just a bunch of random facts thrown on to a page, therefore making it more fun for students to read/listen to.
This book gives facts about the desert in a narrative format. Students enjoy this book because it makes reading nonfiction enjoyable and fun. I have used this in second grade English language arts.
