This is the first book I've read by this Author and I really enjoyed it.

Cody is 21,has recently moved to Denver and is now working at Hamburger Mary's,a gay friendly restaurant/bar.He's left behind his life living in a trailer park in Kansas with parents he didn't have much of a life with. He's in a pretty good place in his life,a job he loves and working with some great people.....he finally feels part of a family.

Darwin is 24,has nearly everything he wants in life,a good job,a nice home-the only thing missing is someone to share it with. He's tired of dating men from dating sites and wants a relationship.

He's on a date one night with a man he's not interested in when he meets Cody.He feels a connection straight away with the cute server.

Cody can't believe someone like Darwin would be interested in him and puts their first encounter down to a hook up but Darwin has other ideas.
These two men were just so cute together....I mean really adorable. But Cody is very insecure and when his past life collides with his present life things take quite a dark turn.

For a novella the characters are extremely well developed and engaging. From the two main characters to the staff at Mary's,Darwin's girl friends(who are just fabulous). All of this makes this a really enjoyable, sexy read.

A recommended read. This is set to be a great series and I can't wait for the sexy Bartender's story next...

“You sure you don’t want something besides nachos? I know it’s good to be a cheap date and all, but you’re cute enough to earn a real dinner.”

Darwin’s on the latest of a long string of dates from hell and it’s taking all that is in him not to run screaming from the table. He’s got his life in order, college, grad school, a successful career and he’s ready to take that next step. He’s been searching for the man who will help him achieve his dream of the house with a picket fence, the husband and 3.5 kids but after this latest disaster of a date he’s about ready to swear off men for good. Or for at least a little while. Fortunately, his newfound resolve is derailed by the adorable little twink of a waiter at Hamburger Mary’s.

“Do we really have to play Britney every night?”
“Of course we do! She’s like the original diva. Without her, there’d be no Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato.”

There’s just something about Cody that Darwin can’t seem to resist. He’s immediately enamored with the little cutie and though he has some reservations about Cody’s age he decides to stick around and get to know him better.

I have a confession to make. This is my first Brandon Witt book and I have to say… I liked it. Quite a bit in fact. I went into this book not knowing anything about the way Witt writes and I was pleased by what I discovered. By the blurb and the cover I was expecting a light romantic comedy and I got that for the most part, but I also got a whole lot more.

For me, the overall theme of this book is perspective. How one person views something is not necessarily how everyone else will see it. This was clearest to me when Darwin and Cody were discussing their hopes and dreams. How shocked Darwin was when he found out about Cody’s dreams! He couldn’t fathom how Cody could be happy with what he wanted out of life and it made him look at it from Cody’s perspective.

There are some darker moments in this story that I won’t get into (I don’t want to spoil anything) and it touched on some very sensitive subjects that had me waiting for the incredible angst but, thankfully, it wasn’t too angsty.

I know some, once they read this, will say it was too ‘insta-love’ between Cody and Darwin and while, yes, they seemed to get together at breakneck speed and the ‘I love yous’ came soon after they got together, it really worked for this story. It felt organic to me, like it was a natural progression. I believed in their love. And for those who say there’s no such thing as love at first sight? Well, let me just tell you… I met my husband in a bar while he was on a date with another woman. I could literally feel the connection between us from the moment our eyes met. He ended up ditching his date and went home with me that night and never left. Yes, that’s right, we moved in together the day we met. Now, here we are almost 21 years later. There is such a thing as love at first sight. I’ve seen it. Hell, I’m proof of it!

If you’re looking for a feel good romance with a bit, but not too much, angst that delves deeper than what is just on the surface, look no further than this book. I think it’s safe to say that I will be reading a lot more of Witt’s work in the very near future. I see you now, Mr. Witt, and I can’t wait to get my hands on book two!

I finally popped my Brandon Witt cherry!! Woo hoo!! LOL, He's been on my TBR for a while but still hadn't read any of his books. Then I read the blurb for Nachos & Hash, and I knew this would be my first BW book.

Nachos & Hash is the story of two Midwestern boys who meet by chance at the Hamburger Mary’s in Denver, Colorado.. Darwin was on a bad date he was getting ready to ditch, and Cody was his cute server that he had a fun time chatting with after he "lost" his date. They ended up hanging out after Cody's shift, and a lovely story about self-worth and family unfolds.

My highlights:

-The characters. For a novella, the characters were surprisingly fleshed out, and I found myself connecting with them.

-Feelings. I appreciated the array of feelings this short story evoked. It had some lighthearted and humorous moments, but it also had some very real and emotional ones.

-Dual POV

-The chemistry. Although feelings grow rather quickly, I didn't have a problem with it. You could feel their connection due to their similar backgrounds.

-The end. I was left emotionally satisfied with a strong HFN.

I do wish the story had been longer, but that's me being greedy. I would've been happy reading some more pages about Darwin and Cody and their Hamburger Mary's family.

I highly recommend this charming story about finding strength within ourselves, self-worth and the what the real meaning of "family" is.

4 Stars.

P.S. I CAN'T wait for Vahin's book!

I’m used to the Brandon Witt books I read being mostly drama and angst with a side of humor and lightness. Nachos & Hash was a delightful reversal. Yes, the MCs still have tough issues to face, but this is more a straightforward romance with a whole cast of loving and supportive characters to help push these two seemingly opposite men into holding onto what they want and deserve.

Having recently escaped the small town Kansas hell he grew up in Cody never dreamed he’d find a place where he can be himself, in a job he loves, with people he considers family. He is happier than ever, but is in constant fear it’s all a dream about to be taken away. This fear is never more realized than when the gorgeous Darwin shows an interest. The fact that Darwin wants more than a back alley BJ or a quickie in the bathroom boggles Cody’s mind. Why would a gorgeous, smart man so obviously out of his league waste any time with him? Cody’s low self-esteem, mostly a gift from his parents (and I use that word loosely here), isn’t going to allow him to feel completely happy and safe, no less accept what Darwin is offering.

Darwin is on another failure of a date. He’s got a good job and is ready to settle down so he has been dating with that end goal in mind. As this latest date crashes and burns he is drawn to the server in the restaurant, Hamburger Mary’s. Something about the “kid” draws him. Darwin may seem to have it all together, but he can relate to Cody in more ways than one. They both struggled to break away from a small Midwestern town, but there is even more that they share. It scares Darwin how much he wants with the almost fragile Cody, but he can only deny his feelings for so long.

This isn’t an age-gap story, Cody is 21 and Darwin 24, but it sometimes felt that way only because of the gaps in their maturity and outlook on life. Cody is so unsure of himself when it comes to their relationship while Darwin comes off as very mature and together. It could have been a weird dynamic, but having both their points of view throughout the story really endeared me to both men. Their feelings come on suddenly and strong and both have valid reasons to doubt going forward, but they also have such a hope and yearning that they are trying to hide from the other, I couldn’t help but root for them. As the men date it was really heartwarming to see Cody experience so many firsts and following his darkest moment, find an inner strength that allows him to reach out and grab his chance at complete happiness.

As I’ve found in the past, here again Brandon Witt’s writing made everything feel real; from the characters, to the settings to the emotions. My heart hurt for Cody. He has found everything he ever wanted and just wants to live his life, but his past was obviously painful and left him skittish and feeling unworthy. Darwin is a sweetheart, but even he wonders if it’s a good idea to be involved. Luckily the secondary cast provides much needed support to these two. Cody’s co-workers are fiercely protective of him truly are the family he never had, meddling where necessary but not being over the top.

This was a strong start to this series and I really enjoyed this lighter story from my usual Brandon Witt fare. I’m glad that there will be more to come of Mary’s Boys, and am definitely looking forward the next book featuring the sexy, flirty bartender.

Darwin is stuck at Hamburger Mary's with his Match.com date from hell. Sure, Mark's got a smokin' eight-pack but he's shallow and gasp, he hates drag queens. However the night isn't a total bust because Darwin meets waiter Cody, a sweet sincere 21-yr-old. Hamburger Mary's, a real "open-air bar and grille for open-minded people” is lovingly described with fabulous cheeseburgers, Drag Queen Bingo, a wonderfully raunchy Family Feud, karaoke, and an overwhelming sense of family fostered and encouraged by co-owners Steven and his sister Pat.

The characters of Cody and Darwin feel real and they are lovingly fleshed-out. Each man is at a different point in his life - Darwin has a good job and family support system and is searching for a husband, while Cody has been wounded and is grappling with self-worth - but they've walked the same roads and had the same struggles. "Inexplicably Darwin’s eyes burned, like he was on the verge of tears. He knew this kid. Hell, in high school, he’d been this kid."

I like how we get Cody and Darwin's POV throughout Nachos and Hash, and while the sex is very hot, their emotional honesty is the heart of this story.
I’m so sorry I made you feel like you’re not enough. I don’t need you to be anything other than what you are. [...] I love you. I know it’s too soon. I knew it was too soon the other night too, but it’s true. I love you, Cody. I don’t know where you and I will end up in this, but I want to find out.
This beautifully-written story delivers a story that is heartfelt and truly touching.

I'm a relative late-comer to Brandon Witt, having read only a few novellas, including Teddy Bears which was all kinds of wonderful. Nachos and Hash is the first book in Witt's new Mary's Boys series and I am anxiously awaiting the second book Vodka & Handcuffs featuring Vahin, the hot sexy bartender - "Solid muscle. Skintight tank top. Wavy black hair. Glowing brown skin. Model face." All that, plus handcuffs?

4.5 High heel Stars!

I think Brandon Witt may have found his niche!
Nachos and Hash is book one in Witt's new series Mary's Boys. Mary's Boys is a series of romances that blossom after people meet their love while visiting Hamburger Marys. Hamburger Marys is one of my all time favorite places to grab bar food and drinks while hanging out with dear friends. The fact that the chain is a gay bar with themed nights and drag shows is simply icing on the cake! The setting alone lured me in and I couldn't wait to dive and see what Witt had in store for me.

I wasn't disappointed. This first installment centers around Cody and Darwin. Cody had one goal in life. To get the hell out of his small town in Kansas and away from his belligerent of a drunk father. Through out his life, Cody has suffered verbal and emotional abuse heaped upon him by his father. His dad always told him he wouldn't amount to anything and that he will screw up anything good that comes into his life. Cody's self-esteem took a huge hit and as a result he never thought of himself as worthy of anyone. Never did he think he was worthy of a wonderful boyfriend and so in a sense, Cody resigned himself to quick hook ups and working at the one place he found acceptance, love, and family- Hamburger Marys.

Enter Darwin. Darwin is 24 years old, has a career and now he just wants to meet someone, settle down, build a relationship and hopefully, build a family with that person one day. Darwin has been on countless disastrous dates. As a matter of fact, he was on another date from hell when he laid eyes on Cody and felt an attraction he couldn't deny.

I was immediately smitten with these two and more than anything I couldn't wait for them to get together and find a happy ending. I liked Darwin's approach to courting Cody who understandably was skittish considering his experiences. Though 21, some of Cody's actions came across as very immature for his age. His demeanor was on par with that of 18-year-old fresh out his parents clutches. Not a 21 year old who should have developed a thicker skin after the upbringing he suffered through and Witt makes a point of stating that which mollified me a bit though I couldn't realistically reconcile Cody's fragile demeanor with the tough real life experiences that would make most people jaded. Darwin is only 24 years old, three years older than Cody, yet Darwin's maturity level exceeds Cody's by leaps and bounds. As a matter of fact, Darwin, called Cody a boy which completely pulled me out of the story. Some of the things Darwin says in general and the way he speaks to Cody at times came across as "too old".

I had to remind myself that Darwin was 24, not the 40-year-old he sometimes sounded like in my head whenever he tries to express himself. Darwin's first date jitters when he tries to impress Cody, served to remind me of his age. It's one of my favorite, endearing scenes in the book. The only other issue I had is how fast Darwin's mom accepted Cody, meaning I understand Love at first sight but parents taking on financial responsibilities of their child's boyfriend in such a short period of time dating made very little sense to me. I needed an interaction between Cody and Darwin's mom to justify that level of commitment.

The little hiccups mentioned and trust me they really are minor didn't change my level of interest in Cody and Darwin. I enjoyed watching their romance develop and I couldn't help but smile when Cody finally accepted the love that Darwin has been trying to shower him with.

In a nutshell, this was a fun fantastic read and I cannot wait for book two! There's an excerpt included at the end of this story. Make sure you read it then take yourself to the nearest Hamburger Marys you can find and fall in love with the place like I did!

Goodness Gracious.

I started out listening to the audio on this book and had to call time of death at 40%. I literally listened to the first 10% and then had to stop, go back and read it because the voices were driving me crazy which ruined my focus. *smh* Along with the errors of repetition and lack of connection with the overall narration, I couldn't go on. I didn’t feel it would be fair to judge the book based on the audio version so I bought the ebook and sallied forth to give it a fair shot. It was just okay. Maybe I should have gone back and reread the whole thing in print. *shrug* Ain’t nobody got time for that. So here it is, a 40% audio and 47% print review (40 + 47= 87% so color me confused when the book just ends as I turn the page at 87% thinking there has to be more).

Darwin is a 24 year old cancer researcher living in Denver on a grant. He’s a serial dater and ready to call it quits until he sets eyes on Cody, his waiter at Hamburger Mary’s.

Cody, like Darwin is from a small midwest town and came to Denver to be around people like him. He had never knowingly met a gay person until he left home. His father is an abusive alcoholic and his parents would never accept him as he is. Cody struggles with low confidence, self-worth, and is always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Cody has this mentality that good things don’t happen to him and if they do, they won’t last.

Darwin and Cody have a SUPER fast connection. Cody hasn’t been shown tenderness in his life or his hook-ups and doesn’t know how to expect anything different. Darwin is patient, understanding, and calls Cody on his self-hate talk. He shows Cody what it looks like to be treated with respect. They had a balance of patient and affirming Darwin for insecure and skeptical Cody.

This book was sweet. Really freaking sweet and that isn’t typically my cuppa. I’m just not a fan of insta-loveish relationships or cheesy professions of feelings when its been a couple of weeks(unless it’s a mates situation). Another thing that drove me bonkers was how insecure Cody is. Darwin is constantly having to restate his feelings alllllllll the way to the end. I know having a rough upbringing can wear a person down but Cody is an immature 21 year old. Their relationship angst was weaksauce and probably could have been skipped over since there was other drama/serious situations coming along.

Clearly it wasn’t a love match between me and this book. It started off on the wrong foot with the audio and never quite recovered. I’m not sure my opinion would have fully changed had I read it outright from the beginning, but I tried. Oh well, Cody and Darwin got their happily ever after and I’ve learned once again to LISTEN TO THE AUDIO SAMPLE BEFORE REQUESTING. *deep breath*

P.S. There needs to be a trigger warning for attempted suicide.

Darwin has achieved nearly everything he's wanted - a great job, a fabulous career, money, a nice place to live - he's missing out on the romance part. He's been dating, but none of those dates have led to anything more permanent than a one-night-stand, and this latest date is simply another disaster.

However, things might be looking up - his waiter Cody is cute, and Darwin thinks there might be something there.

Cody dropped out of high school and hightailed it out of his hometown to escape the homophobia. His job as a waiter at Hamburger Mary's in Denver is enough to keep a roof over his head, and OMG, there are lots of gay people in Denver, so Cody feels much more at home. When one of his customers at the restaurant expresses interest in Cody, he's a bit reluctant to believe that someone as successful as Darwin could see anything other than a piece of ass in Cody.

But Cody is wrong.

Brandon Witt crafted a really cute novella here, and this being the first in a new series, I can hardly wait to see what more is in store for us. I liked how different Darwin and Cody were, but how their dreams and aspirations, while not the same, were very much alike after all, even if it didn't appear that way. Both wanted someone to love, to build a life with, to hold at night, to wake up with in the morning. While Darwin's overall dreams were perhaps a little bigger, Cody still wanted the same fundamental things as well.

Their relationship develops fast, with ILYs coming relatively soon after meeting, but it didn't feel unrealistic. I guess when you know, you know, and that was part of what made this book a great read. I believed their connection, I believed their romance.

The author explored Cody's issues with self-worth quite well, and it was rather obvious to this reader that what happened had to happen for Cody to move forward.

There is a bit of angst too, and I won't go too much into the cause of it, as it's for the most part outside of their relationship, and thankfully doesn't last long. The supporting cast was lovely and fiercely supportive, and helped Darwin and Cody along quite a bit in realizing their relationship potential.

My previous reads by Brandon Witt tended to be more angsty, and this book is a welcome departure from that. It's much more light-hearted, and fun. Also, drag queens! A great start to what seems to be shaping up to be a great series - can't wait to read more about Mary's Boys!

Darwin is on a cheap date with (the awful) Mark and after two seconds with the boring and nonsense man found on Match.com, he starts planning his escape until ManDonna helps him getting rid of his date. While swearing off online dates, Cody happens in his life. Cody, the waiter who can’t shut up for a moment. Cody who has just moved to Denver where he is living his dream, go away from Kansas and finally be himself in a safe place like Hamburger Mary’s with people who actually care for him. Darwin has everything he wishes from his life except a boyfriend, a real one, someone to find a HEA with and Cody seems to be the right one.

Brandon Witt is one of my favorite authors, I adored everything he wrote so far, this novella, the beginning of a new series called Mary’s Boy was awesome in the writing, in the dialogues, in the setting, in the characters. I loved not just Cody and Darwin, but most of all the second characters, like Pat and Stevens, the owner, who have become Cody’s new family.

In Nachos & Hash I truly adored how I soon and easily was able to feel and see the love between all the characters. It wasn’t necessary the use of “I love you”, it was clear in their thoughts, words, actions. I saw their strength, I sadly saw their weaknesses and their unfounded inadequacy.

As always, Brandon entertained me with an emotional reading full of real persons. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series, I’m so excited for Vahin to have his own HEA.

The cover art by AngstyG is lovely, I like it.

Nachos & Hash is a really good start to a series. Feel like this is one of Witt's more lighter reads, but the tears were still there. He didn't go to far. It was light-hearted I guess because of the MC's being so young. 21 & 24 and trying to navigate what they both want out of one another. Nachos & Hash brings both guys from small Midwestern cities together at place in their life when they need someone.

Darwin & Cody were really adorable together. I really liked them a lot. Cody!!! I just want to re-brain him. Show him what love looks like, feels like, and what it means to be cared for. His parents did him no favors in life. They didn't show him any love, care, or compassion. I really just wanted to hug him, and take him refugee into my home. Well, I didn't really need to. Darwin did a great job with his patience, his teachings, and his love for Cody.

Of course its hardships in this book, it wouldn't be a Witt book without be blubbering crying somewhere. Instead, it was as real as it can be. Darwin wants to settle down, and he's young but he's ready. Cody doesn't have any idea what a relationship is or pertains. His entire sexual experience is one-offs, cars, trucks, rest stops. He has no idea about intimacy, cuddling, and just being around someone for the heck of it.

At the worst of times when his happiness is threaten he does a bad thing. It was heartbreaking to see that that was his only way out. It was hard to see him hurt like that, and instead of reaching out to the family that he has made for himself in Denver he decided to let his inner thoughts and demons get the best of him. It hit me harder then I expected it. I mean throughout the book it was kinda carefree, and sweet that Cody needed all this reassuring on what to expect out of a relationship. His self esteem was basically low, and he put on this facade to other people so they won't notice the pain. Here's where Witt's talent truly comes into play. He knows how to craft a scene and evoke these emotions out of us. I loved the cast of characters in this story, I love the outcome of the story. I would have really liked to see Darwin's family make a visit or some epilogue with them just so Cody can realize what he had wasn't normal.

It was rapid them falling in love, but when you are that age it's easy. Trust me, your inhibitions are lowered, and its easy to fall super hard and super fast. Nothing wrong with wanting forever at this age. Just make sure you put forward your best effort if you expect the same to you. The characters were great, and loved seeing Mandonna again. Ooh wait until Vahin's book is up. I truly Brandon's work and he's a super sweet person. Definitely a recommend!

CASA BONITA RULES!!!

Both Darwin and Cody come from small towns in the mid-west and have come to Denver looking for a life “bigger” than what they’ve known. Darwin feels his life is nearly complete, he just needs someone to share it with. Cody is far from comfortable, he’s happy but expecting danger and disappointment around every corner.

When Cody and Darwin meet, Cody can’t believe Darwin would be interested in someone like him (this theme dominates most of their relationship in the story) and it takes them many dates to move forward from “hookup” to something more serious. I loved that Darwin is persistent – it’d be easy to be put off by Cody’s constant low self-esteem issues, but Darwin not only sees someone in need of help, but a compatriot with similar background issues as well as someone – inside- who he can see has a lot of potential.

There are times in this story that we get some very “real” moments: the two exploring sex together (there are awkward moments and fits and starts), some really tough times when Cody’s family responds to something they’ve seen on FaceBook, awkward dates, and more. What we end up with is a lovely mélange of funny, sweet, tender, heart-warming, emotional, sad and touching. It ends on a very happy upswing, probably more HFN than HEA, but with decided leanings toward forever.

Cody, luckily, upon finding himself in Denver, found a new family in his co-workers at Hamburger Mary’s. They end up being very important to him, now and by the end of the story. I loved that the author shows us how family is more than who you were born with and that, sometimes, the family you choose, is the more important family in your life.

I highly recommend this book to fans of the author, sweet and funny romances, as well as fans of “coming of age” romances.

Review by The Blogger Girls.

What a fun and sweet story this was! Cody and Darwin both come from small towns, but with very different upbringings. They find each other by chance at a bar/restaurant, Hamburger Mary’s, in Denver, where they hit it off and their sweet romance begins.

Cody is such a sweetheart! He works at Hamburger Mary’s, a place that has given him a family and place of belonging that he yearned for after his parents basically disowned him for being gay. He’s a simply shy guy who is happy living his dream of being able to be himself and has found that in Denver and at Hamburger Mary’s. He has very low self-esteem, thanks mostly to his useless alcoholic father, which led Cody to experience meaningless hookups with basically not many really good experiences.

Darwin, on the other hand, is further along in life, has a great family and is ready to settle down. He has basically been speed dating his way through Denver, without any success. It is on one of his latest unsuccessful dates that he meets Cody and is immediately enamored.

These two are super sweet together, without being all fluffy and flowery. There was such a genuineness about them that made them so endearing. It takes a while for Darwin to get through to Cody that he is worthy of more, that a relationship is possible and what that actually means. They hit some rough bumps with this as Cody deals with his past, but he now has Darwin and a wonderful new family of friends at Hamburger Mary’s to help him through.

This was just a wonderful feel-good story that was cute and funny, sexy and sweet. It made me long to visit Denver, and I can’t wait to see what else is in story for this fun little series. I definitely recommend it and look forward to meeting more members of Hamburger Mary’s!

I found Nachos & Hash to be a very sweet love story.

The setting is somewhat unique and FUN. The story has a fresh and cheery vibe to it. Or should I say cheeky?

For me it was an easy, laid-back read. I really appreciated the lighthearted and humorous moments, and dug the emotional and touching ones. Most of all though, I adored the main characters!

Darwin and Cody were lovely together. There was a certain chemistry, a connection. They grew fond of each other rather quickly, connected by their similar backgrounds, but it felt good and real, solid.

I connected with them too, making it a special little story I'll keep in my heart for a long time.

And I don't need to mention how awesome the cover is, right? #covercrush

For a novella this short, only 122 pages, it's surprisingly rich. Instead on focusing on setting up the world for future stories, this one dives right in for the romance and at the same time, the author mange to introduce the setting. Really, kudos to him for that.

Darwin and Cody stole my attention right from the start. They are both complex characters, having faced some pretty horrible things in the past but still managing to be great, lovable guys. I deeply cared for both of them and no one was cheering for their HEA than I was. I can't wait to read the rest of the Mary's Boy's books.

Trigger warning for . So if that triggers you, you should stay away from this book.

A Joyfully Jay review.

It’s not often one finds a novella rich and complete enough to set the scene for further stories. Often one finds that a shorter story either spends so much time developing the setting and introducing characters that the romance angle is weak and more of an unbelievable insta-love trope than anything else. So imagine my delight in reading author Brandon Witt’s latest offering Nachos & Hash and experiencing not only a cleverly written introduction to a myriad of sharp and witty people, but also stepping into a sensitive and tender love story that was paced just right and left me fully satisfied.

So much happens in this little gem of a story. I am always bowled over by the way this author manages to unpack so many emotions, which make his characters fully fleshed out and incredibly real in such short order. The demons that chase Cody are felt so deeply by him—his turmoil, his insecurities, his despair is right there—exposed in Brandon Witt’s intense prose that leaps from the page to wrap around your heart. Darwin tries again and again to show Cody that he is enough—that all he wants for him is happiness and yet even that gets turned round the wrong way and leaves Cody barely hanging on—so certain Darwin expects so much more from him and needs him to be something that he never can be. I can’t go on without revealing some major plot points, but suffice it to say there were moments where I laughed out loud in reading this novella and times where I needed more tissues to wipe away the tears.

When you don't have goals and big dreams except being who you are and accepted in the community as you are, it's kinda hard to see other people expected about you.
Darwin wanted Cody. But Cody can't see any future with Darwin, in assumption that Darwin is out of his league.
For a one night stand, that'll be okay, but the future? A boyfriend? Cody's not going there.
Sad that Cody has a low self confidence with his future and just happy in Mary's....but right now, that's what he sees in him.
Darwin has just complicated everything, but he can't help his attraction to Darwin.
Complicated? Yes.
But Darwin never gave up on Cody, some mistakes has been made, but they're back in track soon.
This is a light read, which I was glad.
Cute and entertaining, especially with ManDonna in the picture. Enjoyable, so give it a try...

I pre-ordered this book solely because of the cover! I thought it was striking and different. Based on that cover alone, though, I was expecting something light and fluffy. I didn't mind if I would've encountered quick love. It is a novella length, after all.

It did start like so. It was cute, I loved Cody's ramblings when he first served Darwin. I loved the family-of-choice theme too, with Mary's boys. But there was a tough issue below the surface, and it reappeared nearing the end.

Yes, is VERY serious. I didn't know what to feel about it, really. I thought that if it came to that, this should at least had few more pages to deal with it

But overall, it was a good read. Looking forward to the next Mary's Boys.

Darum geht’s:

Das einzige was fehlt?

I thought it was good but it took me a minute to warm up to Cody! I was like 'dude he likes you', hehe.I thought Darwin was very patient and sweet with him. Would really be cool to visit Hamburger Mary's. It seems like a fun place to go... ;-)

Denver is the setting for this first novella in a new series around Hamburger Mary’s, a chain of GLBTQ+-friendly restaurants in the US. The main characters are very young – Cody is twenty-one and Darwin only twenty-four, but in a way this is a coming of age story for both of them. They share some aspects of their backgrounds (like being from small towns), and they both want to meet “a special guy”, but neither of them believes it is going to happen for them anytime soon. And while they hope this will change once they meet, it is hard for them to believe that what they feel is real. This is the story of how they learn to listen to their feelings and how they, sometimes painfully and in tiny steps, begin to build the relationship they are both looking for.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because still no 1/2 stars here on GR.

'Nachos & Hash' is the first story in Brandon Witt's series 'Mary's Boys' and while I can't quite say that this is a new to me author...but with only having enjoyed 2 stories previously, it's a close call...but not quite, so let's just say he's a nearly new to me author and leave it at that.

However, 'Mary's Boys' definitely has a more humorous side to it than my previous experiences. I was a little leery going into this series that with the stories being shorter, each audio book is approximately 3.5 hours give or take a few minutes. This left me concerned that maybe the characters would fall a little flat or maybe even the story if things weren't adequately fleshed out. Thankfully this concern turned out to be a non-issue.

'Nacho's & Hash' is about Cody, one of the waitstaff at Hamburger Mary's and Darwin who starts out as one Cody's customers.

Darwin's at Mary's on a blind date. He's got his life on track and things are going good...now he just needs to find someone to share it with. As the evening progresses Darwin quickly figures out that his date is definitely not the one, but he also realizes that the cute little waiter who's been serving them food and drinks all night is far more interesting than the person he's been sharing a meal with and maybe he needs to hang around and see what could happen between them.

Despite the closeness in their age...there's only 3 or 4 years between them. I believe Cody's 21 and Darwin's 24 (or something close to this) these men are at very different places in their lives. Darwin's established and ready to settle down...Cody's finally escaped the small town in Kansas where he grew up and he's just starting to discover a life that's his and a family that loves him because sometimes the family that we're given isn't the one one we need and for Cody it's the family that he's made at Hamburger Mary's that helps him to discover who he truly is.

Darwin and Cody were such a sweet match. I loved that even though they were at very different places in their lives there wasn't a big age gap. It was simply a matter of different life experiences. While the road to love wasn't smooth for these two young men, it also wasn't filled with a lot of unnecessary drama...this one was a sweet, simple romance with just enough going on to keep things interesting and enjoyable.

'Nachos & Hash' was filled with interesting characters that I've discovered have stories that are every bit as interesting and enjoyable as Darwin & Cody's and while I got to meet some of the characters who will appear in future books I also have several new characters to look forward too.

Gerrod Larkyn was the narrator and for the most part things were ok. I had no difficulties with the voices he provided for the character there conveyed emotion and in terms of understanding them and distinguishing one voice from another this was not a problem, however, there were times that I didn't feel like a characters voice sounded the same as it had in a previous conversation and while this caught my attention it wasn't so different that I couldn't tell who was speaking or that I was distracted from the story.

It's possible that I'm assuming wrongly here but I also noticed that 'Mary's Boys' are the only audio books narrated by Gerrod Larkyn...I honestly don't know who Dominic Carlos is, I'm assuming he's also a narrator...just not the one who narrated this audio book. I could be wrong about this but a quick peek on audible.com tells me that Mr.Larkyn has only narrated the four titles in 'Mary's Boys' which leads me to the conclusion that this was his first audio narration and having said that I think it's very possible that future endeavors will produce an even better product...after all practice makes perfect...right?

Ohhhhh, Brandon. What’ve you done?

I’m huuuungry now.

Readers, here’s a tip: When Brandon Witt starts talking about food, it’s wise to stop what you’re doing and pay attention. Mainly because it’s entertaining as all hell. Not to embarrass him or anything, but case in point: back in October at GRL I witnessed Brandon having an entire conversation about food all by himself. It was both impressive and hilarious — though I contained my laughter so as not to discourage him from sorting through a critical food-related dilemma.

Nachos & Hash is the start of a brand spankin’ new series centered on the REAL LIFE Denver restaurant, Hamburger Mary’s, where family-strong friendships are the mainstay, love is simmering, the burgers are juicy, and the drinks served with sass. Also, there are Drag Queens!

For the most part, this book fits the bill as a sweet and relatively light read, commencing with a Bad Date and a Drag Show.

Until now, Darwin has been suffering through a string of bad dating experiences while otherwise enjoying a great job and a great life in his newly-adopted hometown of Denver. He’s got his head screwed on right, got sound priorities, and a vision for his future. He is a solid guy who is decidedly ready to settle down — he’s just having a hard time finding Mr. Right.

We meet love-interest Cody early on as his job at Hamburger Mary’s waiting tables puts him in the direct path of Darwin and the carnage of one of Darwin’s Really Bad Dates. Initially, Cody comes across as very young, very innocent, and possibly a little aimless — and I made an initial assumption that this was an age-gap romance. But, I was wrong — very wrong. There are a negligible three years between Darwin and Cody, but it’s obvious that there are distinct contrasts in maturity, life experience, and goals that are apparent for the duration of the story and feed one of the main story arcs. It was a fascinating critical element as we learn that Darwin and Cody have a few similarities in their Midwestern backgrounds — but also some stark differences that could work against them.

This isn’t all sweetness and light. Cody has a few demons he has to wrest before he and Darwin can get to that HEA. Some of those demons are internal and fed by seeds planted by an unaccepting, bigoted family. And, while he’s in a good place now — far away from their poisonous influence — their evil voices still ring in his mind and nearly tear him apart. It’s the strength of love, the unconditional acceptance of solid friends — the family-not-of-blood — who do not waver from his side that gives him the strength to prevail.

Darwin and Cody together were enjoyable and relatable on a few levels with Darwin acting as a calm voice of reason to Cody’s doubts and inexperience. But Darwin, for all his success, maturity, and togetherness, had a few of his own lessons to learn. Because Cody, while coming across as somewhat naive, sometimes fragile, and super innocent had an inner strength he was learning to tap into. He had his own sort of wisdom that managed to catch me (and Darwin) unaware in its apparent simplicity.

It’s often the feeling I have, before starting a novella, that I may not get an entirely fleshed out story or the full picture of the characters. So it is always a delightful surprise to finish a shorter story with a full belly of emotions, nuanced characters, and a hard-earned HEA. Brandon has done it here. And, as much as I love a good juicy burger — and can’t wait to pull up a chair at THE Hamburger Mary’s — the story of Darwin and Cody was a satisfying entree on its own.

Next up on the menu in this series is cocktails with Vahin, the bartender, in Vodka and Handcuffs. I’d like to reserve my barstool now, please!

But right now I need a burger. And a drink.

3. 8 stars.. A great start yah and Darwin's not liking his date.. Cody is too cute and didn't believe Darwin was trying to flirt with him. A fast sweet love story for these guys. Told in both POV. I liked all the characters in this, although i loved Vahin, he was funny. This includes a suicide attempt with a character with homophobic parents. A good ending to the novella.

Darwin's 24yrs out on a date he really wanted to dash to the door and escape. When he talks to the waiter, Cody 19 they hit it off together..

DNF @ 55%.

The characters are shallow and have no connection. If there is a plot, I'm not sure what it is. The dialogue is cringy and I feel awkward on each of their behalf for how fumbling this whole thing is.
