Rate this book
Activist, documentary filmmaker, and founder of the nonprofit Lunch on Me, LaRayia Gaston offers inspiring and practical guidance for bringing kindness, generosity, and love to a world in need.

If the world’s problems feel overwhelming and making a difference seems impossible, you’re not alone. So many of us wish we could be doing something good and purposeful, but we get stuck. We think that what we do won’t matter, or that we’ll do it wrong, or that we don’t have enough time or resources to begin with. But caring about each other is a natural instinct all humans have―what is it doing to our minds, bodies, and souls to ignore this part of our humanity?

In Love without The Lost Art of Giving a F*ck , Gaston shares an inspiring and actionable guide to help us connect with our hearts, reawaken our innate desire to make a difference, and then make that difference in a way that not only helps others but also nourishes our own joy. Through Gaston’s inspiring stories and practical guidance, you

• Dismantle the blocks that stop you from reaching out to your fellow humans―both personal fears and societal obstacles
• Learn how to help in a good way―a way that’s needed, matches your gifts, and feels uplifting for you and those you serve
• Create positive energy exchanges―the energy behind how we give is as important as what we give
• Identify the places you can bring more kindness and caring into the world―to your community, your loved ones, and yourself
• Reconnect with your natural instincts for empathy and service―and experience the joy that arises when you do
• Explore a list of dozens of micro-gestures― simple, intentional acts of caring for another person that can be done by anyone, anywhere, at any time

Filled with profound heartwork exercises, journaling prompts, and real-world practices, Love Without Reason helps you discover that showing you care―showing you actually give a f*ck―doesn’t have to be difficult and isn’t about sacrifice. It’s about joy, and it’s about love.

I loved the premise of this book but I just could not get into it. The author is a model who has started a nonprofit that feeds healthy, organic meals to homeless folks. I love everything about that but I went to the Facebook page for the organization and it's mostly empty other than a few old posts from someone really angry who appears to be part of the community constantly called LaRayia out for being a fraud and only caring about her ego. I don't have any idea why his comments are never answered or why there are no recent posts there (IG seems to be current with a totally different vibe). But with the book itself, it just felt like an endless humble brag about what a good person the author is and how great "Lunch On Me" is. I agree that she is and it is, but I didn't really get any concrete ideas or inspiration or anything. I already work to make the world better with my own nonprofit work but I am always looking for more motivation and inspiration. I don't know why this just didn't hit for me but I ended up DNF'ing it because I just couldn't keep on with it.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

Love Without Reason: The Lost Art of Giving a F*ck by LaRayia Gaston
Publisher: Sounds True
Genre: Self-Help
Publication Date: March 16, 2021

Love Without Reason: The Lost Art of Giving a F*ck by LaRayia Gaston is a self-help book set out to inspire people to be kinder and more generous.

I don't know. I was expecting more from this. It was interesting and easy to read, but I struggled to connect with it. I had not heard of the author before or of the non-profit, so maybe that it part of it.

I did think that the tips on making tiny changes was great and very helpful!

I'm so grateful to LaRayia Gaston, Sounds True, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

This book is amazing. Inspiring. I listened on audio and she cried while reading. It was vulnerable and beautiful. It was like a sermon in a speak to my soul kind of way. I am restarting it. I am buying a hard copy and cd (my car still has a player) so I can listen when I want. This is now a recommend to everyone I talk to book.

Couldn't get going with the book especially since the credibility of the author has been in question for years. Babbling in circles about what you've done for the community but not transparent about the numbers, funding and information is irresponsible as a non-profit. They are not tax exempt as they have lost their status because of taxes... very disappointing read and movement.

[Book Recommendation 📖] Love Without Reason: The Lost Art of Giving a F❤️ck by Larayia Gaston

Where do I start in explaining the amount of love dripping off each page in this book? Larayia does an amazing job explaining her experiences and evidence based approach to showing up for people and offering little micro-gestures to express our love for them. A manual for what I like to call “real love.”

I picked up so many great ideas to begin today. This book is a call for us to respond to life with love - and wake up to the intentions to start creating a better world.

Filled with “heartwork” exercises with some including journaling prompts, Love Without Reason helps you discover that showing you care doesn’t have to be difficult and isn’t about sacrifice. It’s about joy, and it’s about love.

Thank you for writing this book. So many cry hard moments.

Pick it up from your favorite bookseller, or purchase here: https://www.soundstrue.com/products/l...

The book is also available in audiobook format.

Also, it can make a great Valentine’s Day gift to friends and family. 😉

Inspiring and Affirming

I came to this book and her work via the Sounds True podcast. Her story is fascinating, and it really helped me unpack my own attitudes towards giving. I have (imperfectly) implemented micro-gestures into my life for years, and have made giving part of my life, but I still struggled with many of the blockages she discusses in this book. It really helped me think about why I react the way I do, and how to interrupt old narratives with mindfulness and love.

This book got me thinking more about what I can do to help others, especially homeless individuals, through everyday interactions. I appreciate its invitation to change your perspective and love for the sake of loving.
