La idea francesa de la historia. Joseph de Maistre y sus herederos

Rate this book

Pretty good book, especially the first half, about the role of history and the theory of history brought forth by Maistre's thought (particularly chapters 4 and 5 about Enlightenment on Sacrifices and Les soirées in particular), but the last three chapters (part 2) tracing Maistre's influence on early 19th century French historical thought wasn't useful to me, so I kinda skimmed it.

A delightful demonstration of the immense debt counter-revolutionary/reactionary ideas in France had to the Enlightenment, and in turn, the rich influence they proved to have on 19th century utopianism.

“The future is yet never completely knowable in the present” 😳
“But to return to reason.”
