The Lies We Tell

Rate this book
When your brother is the best quarterback in the NFL, people treat you one of two ways: they use you to get close to him, or they hand you whatever you want…. to get close to him.

There is no in-between.

So when I finally got a chance to prove myself as an athletic trainer to my hometown’s baseball team, I jumped at the chance. I packed up and headed to spring training.

No one had to know who my brother was. No one needed to know my last name. No one would ask, and I wouldn’t tell. I would keep to myself, work hard, and kick ass.

If only it was that easy.

One little white lie turned into two.

Then three.

Then four.

And damnit I couldn’t even keep the lies straight anymore.

Things got even more complicated when Chase Turner pulled me into his web of lies as well. Now I was just trying to make it through spring training without my head exploding.

Who knew I would find peace in the biggest lie of all—my feelings for Chase. Because no matter how much this all shattered in the end, he had become worth the secrets.

But could we survive the lies we told?

2.5/5

This book started off so good. I loved the characters, the banter, and the flirting. Oh my god the flirting was so cute. Please and when Chase took Becca to Disney World and then arranged for all the princess to meet her cause he calls her princess and thought it would be a cute funny lil thing, I was so excited to keep reading. But it all went downhill the moment they had unprotected sex and Becca lied about being on the pill. Oh my god and then instead of coming clean or idk taking a plan b or whatever, they just have more unprotected sex ??? And then she doesn't even end up pregnant ?? The author barely touches on how wrong she was for lying about it. There were no consequences for what she did. Also I get the plot of this was mostly about the lying and the secrets, which I was fine with it but when Becca would lie about things for no reason other than it was just the first thing that popped into her head (like lying about being on birth control) I would get so pissed. And there were so many opportunities for her to come clean bUt nO. Anyways this could've been a 3.5 or a 4 but the last 20% or so was just awful.

“Chase?”“Yeah, Princess?” “What is this?” I don’t know where the question came from. I didn’t even really know what I was asking. I was even scared of the answer. “I don’t know,” he replied, still looking toward the TV. I guess that was fair enough since I didn’t even know what I was asking. Then he added, “But I like it. I smiled into his chest, “Me too."

This was my second book of Katie, and as the first one I'm in awe she's a new author. Her writing is so good and nothing better than that combined with a sports romance story.
I was so excited to find out that the hero in the story was Chase, I've met him in the previous book in the series (The Games We Play) and I loved him!

This book is about Chase and Becca, two persons with too much at stake in their careers, she wants to succeed on her own by staying away from the shadow of her brother while Chase is the best catcher ever in the history of MLB and still wants to be..but something happens and suddenly he needs her to not lose what he lives for, while she needs him to keep a secret from everyone..I mean..a little lie can't heart anyone..right? But what happens when the ball of lies keeps growing? The truth will be out sooner or later and nothing will ever be the same.

This book had me swooning since the very first page, I mean..hot baseball players!? and a sassy, brave, ambitious, determined, and intelligent heroine? Count me in! I love a good sports romance and this one did not disappoint, go grab your copy, you'll devour it and still need more!

I was lucky to receive an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Katie Rae is a new to me author. Over the past few days I have read both of her books. This one was wonderful! We know I'm a baseball fanatic - and when I found out it was about a catcher? Heck yeah, sign me up! LOL This book can totally be read as a standalone, but I am glad that I went ahead and read the previous book so I knew a little more about the supporting characters. I don't want to say too much about that to avoid spoilers, for both books. :) I loved Becca and Chase's story a lot. There were definitely some swoonworthy moments, and definitely some hot AF moments too. ;) If you're miss baseball, like me, then give this girl read! <3

Perfect Catch

Chase & Becca have a love that ensures all things and was meant to be! They have such devotion and appreciation for each other that it’s impossible not to fall in love with them as characters and as a couple. The world of baseball jumps off the pages and makes it feel like your right there experiencing their love through Spring Training! Becca is strong & independent and she loves her job and her man. The commitment and perseverance demonstrated through their tangled love story is worth every page! Becca being Cam’s sister also adds to the fun of seeing Cam, Kace, & Ali again! This was another amazing story by Katie Rae and you will fall in love with Chase & Becca! Happy Reading!

From start to finish, this book had me hooked! If you thought you loved Kace and Cam...well Chase takes the cake! How can you not love a super sexy catcher?? Also, Becca is a strong, empowered woman. She knows what she wants and won’t take anyone’s crap! Loved every second of this book!

When you really liked book 1 but LOVED book 2! I ate this one up. Loved both MCs, the plot, the spice, everything.

Becca has just been given an internship at spring training, but she doesn’t want anyone to know her brother is a famous athlete himself. Chase is the team’s star catcher who spent the summer dealing with his alcoholic father and is keeping that from his teammates. The two shouldn’t want each other. They don’t want to want each other. But they just can’t help it.

The banter between Chase and Becca was so good. I loved the way he cared for her and was protective of her. He made multiple grand gestures that had me tearing up. I also enjoyed how Becca maintained her cool working in a male dominated field and strove to make it on her own, not on her brother’s name.

Book 3 was an immediate download and I can’t wait to continue the series.

Can I swoon? I don’t watch baseball, but I love a good baseball romance. Love.

“Oh no he didn’t. Where did he get off calling me Princess? Not in this context and not in that tone.” - The Lies We Tell, Katie Rae

In Katie Rae’s debut novel, we were introduced to Chase and I was so hoping he’d get a book. Katie Rae did not disappoint.
I flove Chase. So much.
I loved Becca and Chase together. The chemistry was so good. The back and forth. The will they, won’t they. So. Good.
I enjoyed this story very much and can’t wait to see what comes next.

Plot 5✨
Spice 3🌶️

Becca wants to make a name for herself and not ride her brother's shirt tail. Her dream job, a Physical Therapist for her hometown MLB team, is becoming a reality. All she needs to do is make sure her lies never become public knowledge, or so she thinks.

Chase is headed into Spring training with a couple of secrets. He is having to battle knee pain that comes with the job of being the first catcher. He is also trying to deal with his father who is spiraling more out of control. He just has to keep up his lies and get through this season, then he can deal with everything, or so he thinks.

When Chase see's the most beautiful woman across the lobby of the hotel, he wanted her instantly in his bed. Now that can never happen because here, she is in his locker room as his therapist. She can blow his plans up with one word. But he doesn't know how close he is to blowing her plans up as well.

Will Becca be able to help Chase with his pain without anyone noticing?
Will they both be able to stay on the professional side of their emotions?
With so many lies being told will the truth set them free or drown them instead?

I end every book of Katie's that I have read thinking that I can't love another one more and she keeps proving me wrong. The one thing that I love about this book is the trust that Chase has when it comes to Becca. With all the lies that each other has told Chase believes the best of her. This was a very sweet and funny read with just enough possessive alpha male thrown in. At the end of the book Katie talked about how she almost didn't finish this book and let me finish this review by saying THANK YOU for coming back to it.

#Sports #Workplace #Forbidden #SecretIdentity

This is book two in a series but it can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. In fact, this is my first book I have read in this series. Did it make me want to go back and read book one? Yes. Is it necessary in order to read this book? No. This is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.

Becca is trying to find her way on her own without the assistance of who she is related to. I understood that. Thus begins her lies. Chase is hiding parts of his life from everyone because he is embarrassed and practicing avoidance. That is where his lies begin. I love the sizzling chemistry between the two characters. I adored how they attempt to avoid physicality, yet cannot stay away from each other. I love that they get to know each other despite the lies that prevent them from knowing everything about each other. Their relationship is like a flower unfurling layer by layer.

This was a beautifully written read as the lies build and then unravel all at once. There is lots of heat, which I appreciated. I also loved the friendship they form and the way they support each other throughout the book. Their HEA is satisfying and happy. The author's style is engaging and now I am dying to read more in this series. It is only a matter of fitting them in with all the other books I have already committed to read. I picked up this read when it was recommended to meet a reading challenge in another author's group and I have zero regrets.

Katie Rae is a new to me author, so I jumped at the chance to ARC read this book for her and I’m so glad I did! This is a sports romance book, baseball being the sport of choice.
.
I’m sure there are people out there who could relate to Becca. She’s just trying to prove she’s her own person and worthy of being recognised instead of forever being in her brothers shadow. I’ve certainly experienced being in someone shadow and so I understood and empathised with Becca so much in this book.
.
The plot is clear and has a great flow to it. Relatable, some realism and a whole heap of swoon. This is a great fun read for those looking for something not heavy with the angst. Despite the lies the chemistry and connection sizzles with the two characters, Becca and Chase. Not gonna lie, NZ aren’t big on the baseball front so reading this was a whole new experience for me. I loved learning about this world and the sport. Chase is definitely a worthy book boyfriend if I do say so myself *wink wink*.
.
There were no faults for me with this book I enjoyed it so much. This is book 2 in the series but CAN be read as a standalone. I did not read the first like I planned but after reading this I’m definitely going back and reading the first one. I look forward to seeing what Katie has in store for us next!

Absolutely loved the storyline of this book! I’m a complete sucker for the athletic trainer/athlete match up and this book brought it’s A game when it comes to that romance pairing! Becca is Cam’s sister from the previous book and she gets a job working during baseball spring training with Kace’s team who is her brother’s best friend. She wants this position on her own merit so she swears everyone to secrecy. The rest begins when she meets the catcher for the team, Chase and gets assigned to be his trainer.

This book had all the aspects I love of a forbidden romance as well as the twist of her brother’s best friend making sure the romance didn’t happen between her and Chase as well. It was a relationship that was completely forbidden from the start on so many levels but the attraction and chemistry between these two was so palpable that I could feel it coming off the page! You will fall completely in love with these characters as you watch their storylines develop!

This is my 2nd book by Katie Rae and I always love the twists and turns she brings with each book as it makes it so captivating that you are unable to put it down! Low spice but it’s such a well written romance that you’ll be captivated by the actual love story!

These two... ugh... I should have known that I was going to want to strangle them based on the title. Nothing good comes from lying... except this beautiful relationship. Becca wants to get her dream job on her own merit without the clout of her NFL brother (Cam) and his pro baseball playing friend (Kace). When she starts an internship with the Kings, the team Kace plays for, she swears him to secrecy about her ties to him and that’s when the lies begin. Chase is the star catcher for the Kings with his own secrets... bad knees and an alcoholic father kept him in the shadows in the off season. When Becca is assigned to the catchers she finds out one of Chase’s secrets and agrees to help him get through the season. As their workouts progress so does their attraction as well as the lies.

This book... I loved it but I was mad at Becca. I know she wanted to do her own thing but the lies came more than the truth. She’s lucky that Chase truly loved her. The meddling from Ali drove me crazy. I’m so glad they got their HEA but man... now I need a drink.

You never realize how one little lie leads to another and then another until it’s just too much. Becca just wants a chance to prove her worth and not get by on her brother’s name. Meanwhile Chase is coming toward the end of his career and his knees aren’t doing him any favors. What starts as tiny white lies leads to sneaking around, falling in love and jeopardizing their careers. But really, what is more important than finding the person you are meant to be with?
I love baseball and more importantly I love catchers so this is definitely my type of book. Chase Turner is one of the swooniest baseball players I have ever read...he can call me “Princess” anytime he wants.
I love the connection these two had despite not being completely honest with each other. And, hello, they lived out one of my ultimate fantasies in the field (wink, wink).
If you are looking for a great sports romances with not a lot of angst this is definitely one for you.

⚾️ SHORT AND SWEET REVIEW ⚾️

#thelieswetell is book two in this series by @katie_rae_author

Forbidden and workplace love are always a challenge. When it’s so wrong to do it, it always feels so right. Becca has something to prove being the only female in a male dominated sport. So when a player wants to give her a hard time while doing her job, she’s going to stand her ground. Chase is considered old in baseball. As a catcher it’s a lot more wear and tear on the body. He knows he needs therapy, but won’t admit it. Until the new intern stands in his way. The more time they spend together the more you see their relationship grow. But as it grows so do the lies. Until everything comes tumbling down.

I loved this couple. Not because of the sneaking around they did. But because of their feelings to each other. What Chase did to make Becca feel special would warm any heart. Their banter was great and as always, I loved seeing previous characters. Totally worth the read!

Fantastic sports romance!!

Oh what a tangled web….

I have been so into this author lately. I loved the first book in this series and I loved this one just as much. Becca and Chase are both strong characters with vulnerabilities. Chase has lived for baseball, its been his only dream and goal but at 33 and a long career in the sport his body is feeling it and with any sign of weakness he knows that a fresh set of knees on a rookie player could replace him no matter how good he is. Becca is damn good at her job but as the sister of a superstar athlete and a woman in a man’s world she is determine to prove to herself and everyone else that she gets where she is on her own merit and not because of who she is connected to. Their attraction to each other complicates things but at the same time it’s so strong they can’t resist it.

I loved that Chase really took Becca’s goals and dreams seriously. He wanted her he loved her but He didn’t want her to sacrifice for him. He knew how strong she was yet wanted to protect her from anything. He was encouraging and genuinely happy to see her thriving. They built a friendship that just grew to love and altered the paths they set out on.

This was a steamy read with a lot of secrets, lies and drama. Reading each page was like watching a house of cards being built. Waiting on bated breath for the lies to come crashing down and hoping two will be left standing. I was wonderfully writte, sweet, funny and swoony. An overall awesome sports/forbidden romance. 5/5⭐

Who knew catcher's gear could be so sexy?
This is such a strong second book for Katie Rae, and I thought she hit it outta the park with the first one.
I really enjoyed that this book is different from the first.
Yes, it is contemporary sports based romance, but it is lighter (not fluff) than the first and is not a MMF book.
I liked that she did make it a companion story to the first book, and yet both stand completely on their own.
I would love to see more from her in the future and I think she should continue to write stories that challenge her as a writer.
I will definitely continue to read any new things she puts out in the future.

Let me just say it again, I love Katie Rae’s writing style! I love that her books are able to pull you in from the first page and usually it’s with laugh out loud humor. Becca and Chase’s story was so much fun to read with Chase’s cocky self always pushing for a reaction from Becca and Becca being the strong and sassy character that she was she certainly was not going to back down. With all the lies piling up I was sure things were going to get crazy and I wasn’t disappointed. I flew through the pages as both lies and truths were revealed up until the very end.

baseball + lies + hea

This was my first by this author. It was definitely a page turner as we watched Chase and Becca work to succeed in their careers, keep their secrets buried deep, and not get caught breaking the rules by the baseball organization. Love finds it’s way even when you’re not looking.

"My friends?" I started panicking a little. Did he know? Ali and Cam were supposed to come and see Kace next week. What if they were there at Disney? "You know,” Chase finally elaborated. “Snow White, Aurora, Belle, Ariel, all those other princesses."

Caught Between Love and Secrets
I couldn’t put this one down! Becca and Chase had me laughing, swooning, and holding my breath all at once. Their chemistry sizzles, but the lies they’ve woven make every moment tense and unpredictable. Watching them navigate secrets, trust, and the high-pressure world of sports felt real and thrilling. A twisty, heartfelt romance that proves honesty, and love—always wins in the end.

The Lies We Tell is Book 2 in Katie Rae’s Game series and it’s great. I enjoyed the story, the characters and the flow. It reads well with lots of accurate in-tells of baseball life. Good action, sweet romance and it was good to catch up with Ali, Cam and Kace again.

princess & butter boy

Naive and Sweet. Becca & Chase both are hiding things, somehow their feelings for each other come off as innocent. In truth the ending felt rushed, and not sure even a fantasy perfect boyfriend can get over than many surprises quite so easily. Healthy doses of Kace, Ali, & Cam were great continuing story.
