A Stream of Darkness

Rate this book
A reformed killer, a dragon agent, and a lone shifter must work together to investigate four abductions…

I’ve always had a close relationship with death.

Six years ago, I was the Renegade, the Wolf of Eden, terrorizing the streets of a small town in Mississippi. Now, after a plea deal that saved my life, I work for the police as a consultant and unofficial cop.

Obsidian Moon, the Underworlder police agency, isn't doing anything about the disappearances of four college women. It falls to my shoulders while I'm stressing over my college assignments and the new transfer who thinks testing my control is a great pasttime.

Then there’s him. The mystery shifter who danced with me at a club and reminds me of home. And he seems to be more than just a random stranger who walked up to an ex-murderer and danced rather than fight.

But I have bigger concerns than two sexy men on my tail as a stream of darkness hangs over Paradise Grove.

The opening of a new series, A Stream of Darkness, will have you guessing at every turn and turning the pages to learn more.

Avery Kilpatrick was born in Flowood, Mississippi, in April 1996. Raised in a small town in the Mississippi Delta, she has a fondness for nature and the cotton fields that create Southern snow pastures in the fall. After writing her first novel when she was thirteen, Avery decided to pursue her dream as an author at a young age.

An alumnus of Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, Avery graduated with a Bachelor’s in English. She also worked on the student-run newspaper, The Delta Statement, during her four-year career at Delta State as a copy-editor and Editor-in-Chief.

Avery currently lives in a ranch-style home in her hometown in Mississippi. The mother of three fur babies, Cinnamon the spoiled cat, Ginger the rambunctious old lady, and Remington a.k. a. Remi the service dog, Avery has enough fur from shedding animals to make a fourth pet. When Avery isn’t busy writing her next novel, she goes on walks with her mother and dogs, watches Outlander or Criminal Minds on Netflix, or can be found curled up on the couch with Cinnamon reading a good book.

A Stream of Darkness is Avery Kilpatrick’s debut novel.

We are treated to verity of supernaturals, old norse mythology and lore, missing girls, and a rogue organization that’s looking to bring about the second Ragnarök.

From the moment I started this story I was intrigued. The author grabbed me. Her opening prologue grabs and continues into the first chapter. I was intrigued by this evil that was hunting and wanted to find out more.

We get a world where the supernaturals have been out to the public since the 1950’s and they have their own police force to police the supernaturals. We are also treated to different realms or layers that you can only see with a different sight and not all can see these layers.

We are treated to a verity of characters and our lead Luce who is a reformed killer.

Luce’s got some interesting and unique abilities that we learn about. Now, I would have liked a novella featuring her killing and trial; just to get more of a backstory and who knows maybe one day the author will give us that tho we do get enough information along the way to piece things together and see where she's at now. It's quite captivating. She’s still young for a supernatural and hasn’t come into her full powers, but when she does; CA-BOOM. During this adventure there are a few areas that I thought Luce would have stoped and thought; that this isn’t right or doesn’t feel right and in the end not have had the wool pulled over her, but then I remember she’s young and it could happen. The author made me feel for Luce and her situation. I cried in several places; because I felt her pain and helplessness.

There are a lot of secondary characters and these are just a few of them: We have Izzy the best friend to Luce. I loved her. She’s so positive and outgoing. Luce needed that. Then Casimir the dragon and Underworld Police Agent. I’m not sure on him. He lies to Luce several times. Then we have Ari a mysteries shifter who pops up out of the blue. Plus all the other’s. There is no shortage of characters to meet.

Now for the romance. At times it’s in the background and other times it's a focus. I wasn’t sure what direction the author was going weather we where going to get a possible love triangle, which I dis-like, or a blooming M/F/M, or a M/F. We have two possible suitors Casimir and Ari. There are tender moments with both and some hints as too things, but I’m still unclear on some things though Luce does pick one. I could have done with out the romance just because I’m confused and it was a bit quick in the making.

The mystery on the missing girls and this hidden organization are gripping. We are told one thing, but it looks like their goal may lie in a different direction than what we think. It’s just the beginning.

A Stream of Darkness is riveting and I devoured the book in one day. It’s got some great distinctive and unusual things to it that transfixed and kept me engrossed. I’m curious to see where the overall arc will lead. Urban Fantasy fans will enjoy.

With such an incredible start to an urban fantasy series, I have high hopes for Crymsen Crescent.
From the first page, we're sucked into the fantasy world through the eyes of Luce, a reformed killer with pretty phenomenal powers.

In her journey of helping the local police investigate the string of murders, we dip into her past, which helps us connect with the main character and begin to understand her plight. The hardships she's faced and facing, go a long way in helping the reader connect with her character, so much so it's impossible not to feel compassion for the injustice of it all.

With a strong voice and a personality easy to like, Luce's journey continues to get a little trickier and most definitely interesting. The romance subplot is well weaved through the pages, and I'm so happy it developed the way it did. There were some definite swoon-worthy moments there.

I can't wait to read book two and follow the action as she follows a new path and navigates life with her new love too.

A highly entertaining and original read, that's well crafted and creative.

I absolutely loved this book! The worldbuilding was particularly admirable and interesting with lots of mythical creatures that do not appear in fantasy that often. I was especially interested in the grimwulves, which the author did an excellent job at developing. I think the characters were all really interesting and had fresh and intriguing voices that kept me entertained the entire way through. I also liked the romantic subplot, which was an important part of the story but did not overshadow the main issue, which was the young women going missing by way of the Ragnar Circle. I was also particularly interested in the Inanis. Avery Kilpatrick has wonderful ideas and tells an engaging story that keeps the reader invested in the story and wanting more. Her descriptions are beautiful, and the action keeps the story lively and fast-paced. I really can't wait for the next book!

Not quite 5 stars but (very) ckose

Sometimes I wish you could give a half star rating rather than have to 'round up' from what I feel is more accurate. Not that this was a bad book by any means - it just has a slight NQR factor for me, personally. Not that will dissuade me from spending the rest of my Saturday from going to read book 2 in the series.

Where do I start with this review?! How about with A Stream of Darkness was amazing! I had very high hopes for the book and I was not disappointed. In fact, it exceeded my expectations. I started this book and could not put it down. Drawn into the mystery, I was as perplexed as Luce was as she dug deep into the case of missing women. When an evil presents itself, Luce finds herself going up against a rogue organization thought to be using ancient rituals to cause havoc.

Amid the danger and mystery the author weaves in a dragon pulling Luce's pigtails and a mysterious stranger Luce is uncharacteristically drawn to at a club where her friend Izzy works. The potential love triangle was subtle and perfectly crafted through the book. The chemistry between Luce and her men is evident and much stronger with one than the other. The relationships the author created are quick yet realistic. Like Luce, I also fell hard for one of the book boyfriends and am happy with how everything turns out.

The author created wonderful characters, well-developed, and likable. Her world building was descriptive and vivid, allowing me to visualize the story. I enjoyed getting to know these new characters, the new supernatural realm the author created, and follow the adventures of Luce, Izzy, Ari, Casimir, and the rest of the cast of characters. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

I was provided a copy of this book to read.
