TV news reporter Samantha Steele is one panic attack away from losing her job. Future on the line and cameraman in tow, she follows her mentor on an exhilarating adventure vacation. When he dies while skydiving, her investigative instincts scream “murdered”, and lead her to gorgeous thrill-seeker Zack Hunter.

Zack is an undercover police officer investigating his uncle’s death through the same adventure vacation company. Samantha is a thorn in his side the moment they meet. Not only is she investigating the same case, but the emotionally wounded loner doesn’t want another partner, especially one whose goal is to splash evidence all over the evening news. But Samantha’s persistence is quite a turn-on, and Zack’s overpowering desire makes it harder for him to push her away.

When the killer turns his attention to Zack, Samantha might be the only one who can save him, forcing the anxiety-riddled correspondent to finally face her greatest fear.

Wow! Talk about fast paced action and adventure, this book is it! You hit the ground running with this one and never stop until you've reached the end. When the story opens, Samantha, a reporter, is about to be plowed down by Zach, as he's landing after jumping out of a plane. He does his best to avoid her but the inevitable happens. While neither one of them is hurt, Sam can't waste any time talking to him because the friend she's there to film is about to skydive. Unfortunately, he plummets to the ground and is killed. While ruled an accident, Zach thinks otherwise. His beloved uncle was also killed taking part in an adventure vacation which is why he's there. A cop, Zach was ordered off the investigation because of it being a family member but he's determined to find out the truth no matter what. He and Sam team up to find a killer and bring him to justice. Along the way they encounter all kinds of obstacles and of course they are in danger, but the action just keeps coming and you don't know who the guilty party is or learn the motive behind their actions until the very end. There is also a great romance between Sam and Zach as well. The two are evenly matched, determined to finish the job, and can't deny they were meant to be together. Loved them both from the start. Highly recommend!

Alive at 5 is the romance suspense debut from Linda Bond who was a television reporter and just so happens that’s what the heroine Samantha Steele is. No time is wasted in throwing you right in the middle of the action. How these two first meet was defiantly a new one. Zack Hunter is a police officer and has gone undercover to try and find out how his uncle died. It’s tied into a company that provides adventure vacations. Zack is currently on a skydiving excursion and when it comes time for him to land there is a woman directly in his way with no way to avoid her. Samantha Steele is their along with her camera man to film all the adventures her mentor will be doing with the adventure company. Problem is when its his turn to jump there is a problem on the way down and he dies before hitting the ground. It doesn’t take Samantha long to figure out that Zack isn’t there for just the thrill seeking, that he lost someone too on one of the trips. So these two forge a alliance to basically go undercover together to figure out who is murdering the clients of the adventure group.

If you like your romantic suspense fast paced with plenty of action scenes this is defiantly one you wont want to miss.

Review originally posted at Ramblings from this Chick

One of my favourite things about reading is discovering new-to-me authors in my favourite genres, so I’m always game to check out something new that comes across my desk if the blurb sounds interesting. Such was the case with journalist-turned-author Linda Bond’s debut novel, ALIVE AT 5: panic attack-prone TV news reporter, lone-wolf undercover police officer, high-adrenaline adventure vacation, and a shirtless-with-a-leather-jacket bloke on the cover? Sold. But while ALIVE AT 5 is an enjoyable enough action-packed romantic thriller, it suffers from the common debut author pitfall of packing so much in that it feels unrealistic, and a heroine that—whilst likable enough—treads dangerously close to TSTL territory.

TV news reporter Samantha (Sam) Steele is on the verge of getting the pink slip from the station due to panic attacks that cause her to freeze up during her live broadcasts. In a last-ditch effort to save her job—and the paycheque she desperately needs to pay for her comatose mother’s care—she pitches a fluff feature piece to her producer: following her beloved mentor and local philanthropist on a two-week, high-adrenaline, extreme-adventure vacation. Skydiving, cave diving, shark diving, and flying in an F-16? She can document that—as long as she doesn’t have to actually do any of those things. When her mentor dies on the skydiving part of the trip and sexy thrill-seeker Zack Hunter voices doubts about it being accidental, Sam vows to find the truth about what happened. But Zack is not really the rich playboy adrenaline junkie he seems to be but a police officer on an unsanctioned undercover mission to investigate his uncle’s suspicious death—along with several others—on the same adventure vacation, and the last thing he needs is a nosy reporter blowing his cover and splashing his evidence (and identity) all over the evening news. Even if that nosy reporter tempts him like no other and makes him want to forget his vow to never become emotionally attached again. Murder and mayhem with a heaping dose of over-the-top action and interspersed sexytimes ensue… and therein lies my main problem with the plot. The action moves quickly from skydiving (where no one seems to bat an eye about the death) to cave diving (which, as a scuba diver myself, I had major issues with—no one, especially cavern/cave divers, would behave the way the characters do!) to flying with the Air Force Thunderbirds (where, apparently, passing out during a 9 G-force turn is enough to induce a personality transplant) to shark diving in the Bahamas, with a near-death experience at every turn and an oddly warped timeline. I get that it’s meant to be pulse-pounding, nonstop action, but this was too much to be anywhere near realistic in my opinion, and I couldn’t buy into the villain(s)’ motivation. However, if you can suspend your disbelief—and I may be unable to do so because I have first-hand experience with the reality of some of these activities—it’s one hell of a white-knuckle thrill ride.

Zack is a typical RS/thriller hero: a little scarred from a tough upbringing, guilt-ridden from having been unable to save a colleague, convinced he’s better off alone because anyone close to him gets hurt, and insanely good at everything. Again, it’s a bit over the top, but he’s a good guy and his characterization works well when considering this a fun, campy romp. I certainly wouldn’t mind having him as my dive buddy, and I liked how he pushes Sam to break out of her controlled, uptight mould and helps her overcome her issues without being a jerk. And despite being nearly perfect, he’s not infallible and the bad guys best him on occasion, which makes him more appealing. Sam, however, I had a harder time with. The TSTL heroine is one of my biggest pet peeves, and Sam wavers right on the edge, countering some kickass moments with some genuinely stupid ones in pursuit of a story camouflaged as a quest for the truth. Sure, it opens the door to more exciting, pulse-pounding scenarios, but it also makes me want to strangle someone… preferably her. I liked how she went from anxiety-riddled and timid to confident and intrepid, but the short length of the book made it feel like she’d gotten a personality transplant partway through. She and Zack, however, make a good couple, and I was rooting for them and their HEA.

Overall, ALIVE AT 5 felt like a print version of a summer blockbuster popcorn film: lots of action and little substance, but a fun, fast-paced way to kill a couple of hours. Linda Bond has a good voice for high-octane action-adventure, so it’ll be interesting to see how it becomes more polished as she grows as an author.

Samantha and Zack... what can I say about these two...?

What starts out as two people judging the other on what they see, turns into a pretty phenomenal relationship.

When Zack parachutes from a plane and goes in for his landing, he wants to throttle the woman standing in the middle of the landing zone. Instead? He lands pretty much on top of her. After a quick scolding, the reason for her being there for the landing starts a pretty suspenseful journey.

And considering Zack's demons have him considering dire consequences? The journey he sets out on is a (welcome) distraction. Over the past few years, he's lost a few family members to an adventure company and while he'd prefer to end it all and join his loved ones, he doesn't trust anyone else to do the investigation. In a twist of irony, he has these thoughts just before another one of those mysterious adventure company deaths happen.

Right away you get a sense of who Zack is. He considers allowing his shadows to suck him in, but he has the need to see things done right. He hollers at Samantha, and just moments later is protecting her from a not-so-pretty scene.

He only continues to be the protecting alpha male from there, keeping her safe, worrying for her, and standing up for her to people like her boss. I can honestly say I liked Zack right away.

Samantha is a fairly reserved female. She's a reporter who will do anything for a story, and knows how to turn her emotions on and off -- something that irritates Zack to no end. On top of that, she's incredibly shielded. In an attempt to get her to open up, Zack barters with her: one hour of her not being in control, one hour of her trusting him, and he'll share the secrets she's begging for. While she does have hesitations, I liked watching her unfold for him. When she loosened up, Samantha was a very likable character.

The romance was a bit on quick side. Not quite insta-romance, but still quick -- 48-hours quick.

I love a good suspense -- one that I don't quite know what's coming around the corner. I think Samantha figures it out before I do, to be honest. All together, I did enjoy this book.

Can I tell you a secret? I really want to read CUBA UNDERCOVER simply for Zack and Samantha. I'm sure I'll fall for Rebecca and Antonio, but I really want to watch this relationship continue to bloom.

Oh My Gosh! I just finished Alive At Five and I am blown away. I can't remember the last time I held my breath in fear while reading a book! THIS book is great! Love, love, loved it! I proof read a lot of books and I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book more. Linda Bond has written a great romantic suspense thriller! If you like your stories to contain intelligent, strong women and hot, alpha men on a mission, then this is the next book you need to read! This is the first time I've written a review on anything I've read but I just had to sing this book's praises as soon as I finished reading it! It's that good!

I received this book last fall, and I enjoyed it so much that I almost finished it that day. I loved the characters, and how the story drew me in with all the action and suspense. I thought the book was well-researched, and that it felt very authentic.

Zack and Samantha's characters had a great chemistry together...although I felt things progressed a bit quickly between the two of them. Still, I liked their interaction and banter and was glad things worked out for them.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from the author!

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. Thank you!

I really enjoyed Alive at 5. Not only is there non-stop action, but the chemistry between Zach(a hunky adrenaline junkie adventure seeker), and the uptight Sam was wonderful. The writing was good. You can’t go wrong with this book. Can’t wait for the next one!

Wow – this one was such an action-packed adventure! With lots of heat and steam between Samantha and Zack, and lots of mystery and intrigue around their investigation, this story moved quickly and had me entertained right from the start.

From their first meeting you could just feel the tension and energy rolling off both Samantha and Zack, and when she convinces Zack to help her investigate the adventure vacation company with her, you just know things are going to heat up between these two.

His jaw dropped. “Blackmail? Really? Do you know the penalty for that if I really am a cop?”

She snorted. “Extortion, actually. Well?”

He snapped his jaw shut. He knew very well what would happen if the adventure vacation knew his real identity, and what his bosses would do if they found out he was still investigating this case after they’d specifically pulled him off it.

Wow. She had him. He was impressed, and a little turned on.

As their investigation continues, Zack has to learn to trust and rely on someone other than himself. Still reeling from losing his partner and his uncle, Zack has decided that it’s easier to not let anyone in – that way you can’t be responsible for anyone but yourself. Carrying around the demons of his past has also left their scars, and constantly worrying about becoming the man his father was weighs heavy on Zack’s conscience.

Samantha has her own issues she is carrying around. Abandoned by her father when she was young and now responsible for her sick mother and younger sister, all while trying to keep her job at the television station, has really taken its toll on her ability to give up control and let herself live a little. And when Zack Hunter enters her life, he pushes her boundaries like no one else has… but learning to trust doesn't come easy for Samantha.

As Zack and Samantha finally give in to the attraction between them, their investigation starts to heat up and threatens to keep them apart – maybe even permanently if the killer has his way!

This was a great read and I highly recommend this one to any romantic suspense fans. There was a great balance of romance, including some great heat and steam, with the suspense of the story. The writing was bit edgy and enhanced the feel of the story – you could actually feel yourself in the news story that was being investigated. All in all a great read!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review.

Police officer Zack Hunter is undercover investigating the death of his beloved uncle. His uncle died while scuba diving on an adventure vacation. Reporter Samantha is doing a news story her mentor's trip on the same adventure vacation - first up, a skydive. When a faulty parachute opening results in the mentor's death, she convinces Zack to become the topic of the story so she can continue the trip to investigate the now string of suspiciously-unsuspicious deaths killing vacationers.
Initially, Samantha suffers from panic attacks from the idea of any sort of risky activities. Zack helps her overcome her fears and by the end, she engages in stupidly-risky behavior.
The secondary characters were not well-developed. I also found the timeline to be odd. The vacationers went from one activity to the next with no break in the action, but a vague indication that some days had passed (maybe in travel time?) and things had happened off stage. I would have liked to know more about Samantha's visit with her mother and the discovery I also had a hard time keeping track of the victims. The ending was completely unrealistic.

Samantha is following her mentor on his adventure vacation for a story when he is killed. His parachute opened too early as he jumped from a plane. Samantha was on the ground waiting for him after being flattened by another thrill seeker, Zach. He is actually a cop unofficially looking into his uncle's death that also happened during an adventure vacation. After they speak to the detective in charge of the investigating her mentor's death, they find out that there have been several deaths. Samantha blackmails Zach into working with her to find out who is behind these murders. They are in for the adventure of their lives including falling for each other.

Samantha and Zach have an incredible chemistry. He is bent on challenging her to get outside of her comfort zone asking her to trust him. From a little blindfolded dirty dancing to facing her biggest fear by flying in a fighter jet, Zach pushes past her limits and right into her heart.

Now the mystery part of the story was fantastic. Truth was I had absolutely no idea who it was until the big reveal. None. And I am usually pretty good about figuring it out before that moment.

I give Alive at 5 4 hearts!

Zack is a former ranger, investigating his rich uncle's death. He is in no way looking for romance and he sure as hell doesn't want some reporter tagging along messing up his investigation.

Samantha (Sam) is a reporter in need of a big scoop. When her friend and mentor dies in a mysterious "accident", her reporter instincts tell her there is something more going on and she is going to find out. Dragging her camera man George along, she decides to twist Zack's arm into letting them follow him on his "adventure".

Sparks fly left and right with Sam and Zack and so do a few very near death encounters.

The story is fun and engaging, the suspense will keep you flipping the pages, just to get to the big revelation. Because, come on it’s a mystery, there is always a big revelation. The ending is the only thing I would have changed a bit, perhaps add an epilogue where Sam and Zack go off into a non-death laced vacation; maybe have them sitting on the beach of Cabo sipping margaritas.

Alive at 5 by Linda Bond may be her debut book but I couldn't tell it. I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down.

Samantha Steele is a news reporter following a friend on an "adventure vacation". She is strong, independent and flawed. Zach Hunter is a cop taking time off from work to track down is uncle's murderer. He is all Alpha male, he is very good at his job and flawed.

Linda's characters are well developed, the plot had so many twists that I never guessed who was behind all of the evil deeds. The secondary characters did well in supporting the H/h and the story. I kinda liked Sam's cameraman, George, because he added so much flavor to the adventures as he filmed Zack.

The dialogue between Sam and Zack was believable and sometimes humorous as they both wanted to control everything. They actually made a great team when they began to open up to each other.

I am looking forward to more books from Linda Bond.

High octane, packed full of adventure, bodies falling from the sky and rising from the deep—who wouldn’t be gripped?

The action is non-stop, (maybe too non-stop for those looking for a relaxing read) and the romantic dynamic between Zack and Samantha sizzles as they try to track down the killer responsible for the death of his uncle, and her mentor. Set against a back-drop of adrenalin pumping sports, which was perfect for the pacing, this is a story in which the hero and heroine have to punch their way to ensure their own survival.

Only dropped a star because, at times, the speed with which everything happened tended to overshadow the growth of the relationship between Sam (not a risk taker) and Zack (huge risk taker)—something I would have liked to have been brought centre stage more often, but that’s a personal preference.

Overall a great book for beach.

This was a fantastic book! You don't often find romance novels that have everything like this one does. You have some humor, lots of action, some steamy moments which let's face it we almost all read these for. This one doesn't't allow the typical romance novel formula which I think is definitely one of its strengths. I have no fingernails left due to some pretty intense moments! I don't like to give any spoilers in my reviews just the high points of the book in my opinion and a general recommendation. So if you want a book that will leave you on the edge of your seat and cheering on the characters and wanting to follow them on their next adventure then this will be the book for you! Personally anything Linda Bond writes will always be on my must pre order as soon as the option is available.

I'm always on the look out for a great beach read and this one certainly fits the bill. It was a fast paced, easy read; the perfect amounts of suspense, romance and action. For the most part the suspense and romance aspects were balanced, and made sense in the storyline. The characters were engaging and interesting, both primary and secondary were well developed. The story is well plotted, and the twists and turns are many but not telegraphed.
I really enjoyed my afternoon with Linda Bond. I would definitely read more of her work.

A fun, fun, fun read or a murder mystery involving an unlikely trio of an undercover cop, a reporter and her cameraman, set against a breathlessly exciting backdrop of (extreme) sports. Throw in a parachute failure, sabotage of scuba equipment, tiger sharks and sultry sexual tension and voila...an explosive mix of action, plot twists and romance that really surprised me in a good way.

Romantic suspense, thrilling, and breathtaking...

This book is a definite 5 stars. Linda Bond does a really exceptional job with describing the feelings these characters are experiencing. I was really amazed with the F16 flying experience - it shows that the author really did her research. It's refreshing to read about strong women and not just male heros although this male hero keeps the blood pumping too! Great job Linda!

Zack, a cop, is still reeling from the loss of his partner and uncle, and the guilt he feels over both deaths. He's currently undercover, though it's personal and not sanctioned, at a company specializing in high-risk adventure vacations, the same place three men, one of them Zack's beloved uncle, Jackson, died. Now, if he could just nail this parachute landing, it'll solidify his persona of an adrenaline junkie. Wait, why is that woman not only in his landing path, but also pointing a video camera at him?

Oh, this was going to...yep, she was right, it hurt. Sam, a television news reporter, didn't see the man jump, but she did see him headed directly for her, albeit a little too late. In between the pain and nausea, Sam and the kamikaze parachuter, debate who is at fault. Yes, Sam was in the landing zone, but wouldn't an experienced jumper have been able to avoid her? *That's her defense and she's sticking to it.* Besides, she hurts, a lot. But she needs to refocus, her vision isn't blurry, right?, and ensure she catches Maxwell's jump. Maxwell is the hometown hero as well as the closest she's ever had to a father. If she misses it, she knows she'll be jobless, something she can't risk.

Zack and Sam share apologies, concerns, and a little flirting. Okay, the last part is pretty much all Zack, something Sam makes herself ignore, figuring he's like all the other skydivers...confident in their appeal because it has a high approval rating and follow through. *wink wink* When Zack learns she doesn't fly, he gently teases her about the obvious fear, and then immediately feels bad, yet again, after learning she has a legitimate reason.

Zack is doing some ignoring of his own though, avoiding Sam's questions regarding his background, specifically whether or not it contains time in the military. Instead, he'd rather focus on something else.

“If you’re not still active military, then what do you do these days, Zack Hunter, ex-military man?” - Sam
“Right now, I’m fully engaged in my next mission.” - Zack
“Which is?” - Sam
“Getting to know you.” - Zack

It backfires though when Zack continues his persona of a man able to spend money frivously, enjoying the benefits of a wealthy family. He unknowingly hit Sam's hot button, appearing to be like her absentee father, a man uncaring of who he hurt or left in his wake, including her, her sister, and their Mom. As Zack and Sam prepare to go separate ways, tragedy strikes, and unfortunately, not only do they witness it, but Sam may have just lost the father of her heart.

When Sam learns of the other deaths, her reporter brain knows there's a story, not to mention that Zack is hiding a few secrets of his own, and she has no problem blackmailing, err persuading him to help her uncover what's going on. Seeing as Zack wasn't really left with a choice, he and Sam begin working together. This new outcome causes Zack to question the wisdom of their alliance, and just how long he can resist Sam.

How far are Zack and Sam willing to go to identify those responsible? Will Zack and Sam succumb to the chemistry they share? Will Zack reveal his true identity to Sam? Will Sam be able to save her job? Will justice prevail for those murdered? Who is behind the deaths and why? Will Zack and Sam get their HEA? Or was their time together just a temporary adventure?

One-click now as two people meet under unique circumstances and discover a love that offers the ultimate rush.

This was my first book by Ms. Bond and it won’t be my last! It was action packed, fast paced, fun banter, small amount of sexy times, and keeps you guessing.
Samantha Steele is a news reporter on the brink of losing her job. She is filming Maxwell Wentworth (a father like figure) on an adventure vacation of skydiving, cave diving, and swimming with sharks. The story starts off with her looking up into the sky trying to see Maxwell jump from the plane. She happens to be standing in the landing zone when Zack is trying to land. Of coarse he plows into her. Zack is an undercover cop taking the same vacation his uncle died on to try and find out what really happened. As Zack and Samantha are talking, they witness Maxwell die during his jump. Suspicion is raised because this isn’t the first person to die while taking this adventure vacation.
Samantha is supposed to go live at 5 and report what just happened but she freezes up. Her and Zack decide to team up to find out the truth and hopefully she’ll get the story of her life. She and her cameraman George are now going to follow Zack. During this story there are lots of mishaps that bring Zack and Sam closer as they try to figure out who the killer is. You can’t help but root for Zack and Samantha. George is quite funny at times. In the end, Zack saves their lives and Sam catches the confessions on tape. There is an HEA. This story is a standalone.

Samantha is afraid. A recent family tragedy has left her fearful and hesitant and simply overwhelmed by her responsibilities. If she doesn't pull herself together, her job as a television reporter is at risk. Her current task of following her mentor around on his risky adventure vacation is her last chance to redeem herself. Zack is also on the adventure trip but for a completely different purpose. He believes someone on the adventure circuit is a killer, and he intends to prove it. Samantha is a distraction he doesn't need, but he can't help wanting her. When the worst happens and her mentor dies, Samantha convinces Zack that they should work together even though Zack is hesitant. As the danger heats up around them, so does their chemistry, but can Samantha face her fears in order to save Zack?

Zack was a great character. He was funny and kind and an adrenaline junkie at heart. Samantha had more responsibilities than she could handle, but she was determined to make it all work and help Zack in the process. The story had a great pace with plenty of action and chemistry.

This was a really good, solid read, and a nice addition to the romantic suspense genre. It didn't capture me the way other series I've read have, but I could find few faults with it. It was a pretty straight-forward mystery, with interesting characters, well-written dialogue, and a fun romantic side plot to go with it. I like that we weren't overwhelmed with a dozen sex scenes, but rather we were rewarded with a slow simmering romance that led to a great, passionate explosion. The characters were likable and easy to identify with.

I think what keeps me from giving it 5 stars is the fact that the mystery didn't suck me in the way I would've liked. There was a surprise at the end, but it wasn't really much of a twist and though I wasn't necessarily expecting it, I wasn't really shocked by it either.

All in all, I thought this was well thought out and well written and I look forward to reading more by this author!

This one is an non-stop thrill ride. The author has researched various adventure experiences and how someone might be killed accidentally or deliberately while doing them; then thrown them at us in front of an investigative reporter and her camera crew. Only a few scenes are not set during an extreme activity or discussing the potential for crimes.
I didn't need the romantic entanglement to make this a great read, but with lively young people and all that adrenalin, I guess it would be bound to happen.
There is some strong language and adult activity.
