I'm someone who doesn't care for stories about characters that doesn't involve a romance. So the first half of this novella was extremely boring to me. I get that this was to set up the series, but the last 40% could have been a prologue to the book and I would have been happy. I'm definitely intrigued by the couple, but this book wasn't engaging for me and I just wanted the couple's romance already. So while I didn't love the plot of this book, I'm definitely looking forward to picking up the first book in this series.
TROPES: ~motorcycle club ~age gap ~guardian/ward ~found family
To start off with, this is a novella prequel to the series Ruthless Kings by K.L. Savage! I got book 1 as a freebie recently and I discovered today that there is a prequel. I almost read book 1 before reading the prequel, don't make the same mistake I did! <3
In this story, Reaper is the president of the Ruthless Kings MC. He just lost his VP and best friend, Hawk. He finds out that Hawk had written a letter to him prior to his death, deeming him the guardian of his 10 year old son, Jenkins. Reaper has no clue what to do with kids and this novella was all about them learning and growing together. It's a touching story of how the MC treats Jenkins and how they all learn to grieve Hawk. Also, during the time length of this book, all of the MC are chasing after a serial killer, which was interesting!
There are timeskips! Lots of them, from the time Jenkins was 10 until he was 18. The day before his 18th, a young, beaten girl was found in the MC parking lot. Sarah is her name, she's 16 and she latches onto Reaper immediately. She doesn't want him to leave any room that she's in because she sees him as her protector. They soon learn a secret gathered from Sarah's eyes... and she, too, becomes a ward of Reaper. At the end, Reaper's feelings were all confused because Sarah was starting to get under his skin. He doesn't want to want her, so he rejects her. Cliffhanger.
LIKES: -H calls h "little one" -We get to watch him grow into the thought of raising Jenkins. He hated it at first, but eventually his feelings changed and he felt like a true "parent" to Jenkins towards the end. -The club is a found family. It's so sweet! -H is a damn good leader of the MC. I loved his character traits and personality! His actions? Not so much lmao
DISLIKES: -Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy must some books contain sex with OW? That's not hot to me at all. I skipped over all the spicy scenes because they churned my stomach. -The D@MN CLUB BUNNIES/WHORES/SLUTS. I get it, I get it- I'm reading a MC romance. I should expect it. I love EVERYTHING about MC romances... except for the girls that get used around. -Maia, Mollie, Myra? Whatever the club bunnies name was, I just KNOW she's gonna be a problem in the next book. There was no mention of any other OW during the entire 8 years... every single time he has sex is with her. -The heroine Sarah is very clear in what she wants- and that's Reaper. Her take-charge attitude took me by surprise. It wasn't what I expected from an abused girl.
Will I read book 1 of the series? I doubt it. I'm not a fan of OW drama in books. But I did overall like this novella!
SAFETY: Ages: 17h, 30sH Virgin/celibate: unknown about heroine because she's 17. hero doesn't seem to be a manwhore, the only woman he apparently has sex with during the 8 year duration of the book is his favorite club bunny. OM/OW drama: none... yet Cheating/sharing: none Triggers: death Kinks: don't know, I skipped over the icky spicytimes. HEA?: cliffhanger
Reaper's Rise is the prequel to the Ruthless Kings MC series. Unfortunately I don't plan to continue because there was just something missing for me. I wasn't a fan of the writing and there were so many editing issues that they became frustrating. This story is about Reaper who is the President raising the son of his best friend who is killed. It quickly goes through the years from 10-18 for the boy. At the end another kid of his best friend shows up, 16 year old Sarah who is immediately drawn to Reaper. It basically ends with 17 year old Sarah fondling and kissing Reaper who is in bed sleeping. Sorry, although age gaps are totally my thing it feels to me that Sarah is going to be an annoying, aggressive, desperate young woman and I have not interest in her.
So here's the thing, Rating a novella is always been tricky because it was short and not enough storyline to deliver or no sort of characterization happen. You solely based your stars depending on how much did you enjoyed reading it...
Reaper raises his best friend son Jenkins after his father died. This was the best of the story for me and a good amount. Seeing Reaper who has no kids and has no idea what he is doing was good. This spans over many years. My heart broke for Jenkins, had a good giggle moment. Enjoyed the secondary characters.
Sarah the heroine who will be in book one annoyed me and seemed kind of bratty. I had a hard time connecting with her. Maybe cause of the insta love she had with Reaper. Love age gap and hopefully when I get to see more of their story I will feel the connection.
Free prequel Awful. This is just a mass info-dump of telling. The dialogue is dicey. The writing and story execution is stilted. Reapers POV is more try-hard badass than actual badass. Not for me.
This was a good intro to a new series. I'm excited to delve more into these characters, and the women they fall for. I really liked the cover, too. The author made me connect with the characters, gave them personality. I liked the fishing scene and the surprise of Sarah, the shock of how Jenkins handles a guy they have to deal with. I like the little tease of her and Reaper at the end. I could totally get into a series like this.
First book in the series and it was good. Will continue with the next book after this short review.
Reaper is the president and it begins with the club having just buried his VP and best friend Hawk. Hawk has a n eight year old son and Reaper is now responsible for him. He doesn't know how to be a parent and the kid doesn't make it easier for him. He does the best he can
The book jumps in years until the kid is turning eighteen. During the past few years there has been a few deaths of kids being beaten up and dumped on the side of the road. No matter what they can't catch whoever is doing it until they finally catch a break but this young girl might just have more than answers they are looking for.
Ok I’m into it. This little amuse-bouche got me curious and we know I live a nice dangerous dirty age gap daddy style so I’m down like a clown Charlie Brown.
Tone for book 1-reaper. Let’s see how she wiggles get way into his shirts for the long run
This one was a little difficult for me because there is a scene where Reaper is with another woman. No Sarah is not there and isn’t for a while but my romantic heart didn’t like that. Also Sarah is going to be a little annoying in the future but she’s a girl soon to be woman who knows what she wants!! Other than that it kinda works for me. I loved some of the side characters so will defo be reading book 1. Just nope that there isn’t any other man or woman dram! This is my honest and unbiased review.
I read this because I wanted to read Reaper and didn't want to be confused. Reaper's Rise introduces the motorcycle club, the Ruthless Kings. The book starts after the funeral of the vice president, Hawk. The president, Reaper, was Hawk's best friend and is having a hard time dealing with his death. He still has to be strong for the sake of the club especially when he finds out that Hawk made him the guardian of his ten-year-old son, Jenkins. We watch Jenkins - who has an unnatural fascination with fire - grow until he's eighteen. On his 18th birthday a teenage girl shows up at the club. Beaten and bruised, the girl immediately takes to Reaper. The reader knows right off that the girl is Hawk's daughter and Jenkins' sister - a daughter Hawk obviously knew nothing about before his death. The girl, Sarah, is only 16.
The story was okay, I suppose. Actually, it was quite good until Sarah made an appearance. I know she's Reaper's love interest in Reaper, but I wasn't a fan of hers at all, especially at the end. I can't say why without giving a spoiler.
I adored Jenkins right off. I loved him even more later. He was a sweet kid who felt lost after his father died. At one point I admit to getting a little misty-eyed. I liked Reaper. He was really good with Jenkins and made sure he wasn't subjected to things in the club that he shouldn't be. Well, not when he was too young anyway. I liked all the other members, especially Tool who cracked me up a few times.
There's a bit of graphic violence but it doesn't drag out for long.
What I didn't love...
- Sarah. What a little brat. I get that she's only 16 but come on. And what she does to try to get Reaper's attention, even knowing she's playing with fire? That made me dislike her that much more. Reaper doesn't do anything with her until she's 18 (and nothing at all in this particular book), but it's not from lack of trying on Sarah's part. I'm the last person to complain about an age difference between main characters - and there are 21 years between these two - but something tells me that her lack of maturity will have me wanting to throw a perfectly good Kindle across the room if she acts as silly in Reaper as she did in this one.
- The editing. Paragraphs are repeated, wrong words are used, and the punctuation (in some places) is nonexistent. I get this is a freebie but still. This was my intro to the authors' work. I ended it hoping the others in the series aren't as bad as this was with the poor editing.
I guess I'll start Reaper and hope for the best with Sarah. I'm curious about reading Jenkins' story (Boomer). That will depend on how I feel about Reaper. Hopefully I'll be surprised.
I got about 20% into Reaper before I felt like I was missing something, checked the description of the book, and realized that I’d missed a prequel. Reaper’s Rise is only a novella at about 100 pages, but it provides much-needed insight into how Sarah and Jenkins came to be living with the Ruthless Kings MC. That said, this could have easily been incorporated into Reaper in the form of flashbacks, but given that this novella is free to read, it’s not that big of a deal.
I read this one after reading Reaper, because i needed to know all the back story for next book which is Boomer.
I'm glad i read it, i loved reading about Jerkings and Reaper's past, i really liked what Reaper did, and how he toke care of his best friend kid, that was awesome.
5 stars for the other MC members, i had a good laugh! and all the Jekings stuff. 2 stars for how Sarah joined them, again, like i said in their book , i hated how she threw her self at him, like no underage should do. I wouldn't mind a stupid crush and her trying to do a innocent kiss, but i can't stand her acting like a cut-slut. I couldn't take her seriously and it was all insta, like the second she saw him. Also i wished i never read Reaper and Mindy's intimacy scenes 🤮 (thx God they weren't in his book also)
Now i'm ready to read Boomer's and the rest of the MC books.
3.75 staras-- REAPER’S RISE by KL Savage is the introductory novella in the author’s contemporary, adult RUTHLESS KINGS erotic, MC romance series.
WARNING: Due to the graphic nature of the story line premise, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Reaper and Sarah) REAPER’S RISE follows in the aftermath of the murder of MC vice president Hawk, and the club’s newest acquisition in the form of Hawk’s ten year old son Jenkins. Jenkins struggles in the years following his father’s death but on the eve of his eighteenth birthday, a bruised and battered young woman, comes looking for help from the Ruthless Kings MC. A shocking revelation, and a brutal need for revenge push Jenkins over the edge, as the Ruthless Kings, and Reaper stand by his side.
REAPER’S RISE reveals some of the background and relationship history between Reaper and Jenkins, and the arrival of Jenkins’ sister Sarah, a seventeen year old girl who has set her sights on the ultimate prize. The premise is dark and raw; the characters are colorful and bold.
Ohhh!! What a great way to start the Ruthless Kings MC series. So much suspense, danger, and sexy vibes. I'm definitely here for it!!!
Sooo I'm not a huge fan of Novellas, however, given the premise of Reaper's story and how he ended up raising his best friend's kids really needed to be told before diving into the whole shebang. I really enjoyed this start and I loved seeing this gruff biker try to raise his best friend's son the best way possible. I was over the moon.... and then Sarah came along and this world became a hell of a lot more intriguing! I can't wait to continue on with this series and see what shenanigans Reaper and Sarah get into with Reaper's full length novel coming up next. I'm a tad bit worried, given it's an age-gap and this trope runs either hot or cold for me.
Good introductory novella to this mc series, setting up the relationships and personalities within the club and between Prez Reaper and his best friends son, Jenkins. I liked Reaper, trying to do his best for the club whilst having no clue to start with how to handle a 10 year old boy!
The ending with Sarah also sets up the first full book, an age gap romance and also shows the darker, protective and vengeful side of the club. I'll reserve judgement about Sarah herself until I read more as she's so young, but clearly she has her fathers fire!
This is the first book I've read by this author but it has whetted my appetite for more.
Getting to know Reaper and how he went from no responsibilities (except for his club boys) to being a dad to a little boy who is destined to follow in his deceased dad's footsteps was filled with bits of humor, embarrassed moments and then it all changed when Sarah shows up.
Sarah has a crush on Reaper but he knows she's young but she is tempting. This is a prequel and makes your curiosity piqued to how the MC life and a young temptation is going to cause Reaper to feel things he's definitely not ready for.
I received an ARC for an honest and voluntary review.
This book is all world building, character introductions for the coming RKMC series. There is no romance in this book but it sets up the first book, which will be a May/December taboo type romance. I'll read that one to decide if I want to continue. I liked the writing style and I liked Reaper but I'm just not sure about Sarah and Reaper together. It'll take a strong story to make this palatable after 2 years of "raising her" in the club to 18.
Amo la lectura de clubes de moteros, y está no fue le excepción. No son largos lo que te permite leerlo de una sentada, amé los personajes. La pluma del autor es ligera, te envuelve la trama y te deja con ganas de más. Y tengo ganas de leer a los demás
I really enjoyed seeing the Ruthless Kings when Boomer first came to live with them, and the relationship between Reaper and him. I loved seeing how Sarah came to be with the club as well. I read this after reading the rest of the series first and it was cool to go back and meet all these men again.
An intro to the series. I liked it, but definitely didn't love it. There were editing errors, not enough to take me out of the story, but enough that they were noticed. I may read more as there were a couple of characters I'd like to know more about.
